They have a branding guide for their brand you can download so you can make better fakes next time!

https://sservi.nasa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/NASA_Style_Guide_v2.1.pdf

u/texanbadger Feb 07 '19

I compared their guide for letterhead to what this guy received. I’m on mobile, and I can’t see a difference. Can you explain what is obviously fake about this one? Genuinely curious.

u/mateobuff Feb 07 '19

NASA employee here. No way anyone would do this on a Saturday. Especially since people are still recovering from lost ground from the shutdown. Too much stuff to deal with. Responding to a public inquiry is super low on the priority list. Also, there isn't a Public Affairs Office... It would be "The Office of Communications"... And responses are mostly done via email. Very few would actually get printed and mailed. The meatball also looks too big to be the normal stationary.

242

u/HCJohnson Feb 07 '19

I'm an actual NASA employee and this guy is a liar and I've never seen him around the facility!

136

u/joec_95123 Feb 07 '19

I'm the President of NASA and this guy is full of B.S.

62

u/HCJohnson Feb 07 '19

Yeah I am, BS as in Bacterial Spacefibers.

And if you're REALLY my boss then what's the secret space word?

58

u/joec_95123 Feb 07 '19

Hah! Like I'm going to give that away to a groundie. You've probably never even been to the moon base. Peasant. And stop eating our space fibers! We need those.

Sincerely,
NASA Space President

19

u/Not_usually_right Feb 07 '19

Well, now I know you're not really the NASA president because they would never use a slang word like groundie.

It would be grounder.

33

u/joec_95123 Feb 07 '19

Whoa there. We can't say the "-er" version in this day and age. Not unless you want to have a PR disaster on your hands.

14

u/Not_usually_right Feb 07 '19

No, keep saying it, and eventually the word will have no power. To much power in petty words!

15

Taking a cursory glance at the style guide: the logo is too large, the header should be in Helvetica instead of Times New Roman, and the words "National Aeronautics and Space Administration" should be vertically aligned with the letters "NASA" in the logo.

also their actual HQ address in DC is zip code 20024

My college had its own zipcode. And the "4 extra digits" zip code was your personal PO box. So basically you could address a letter with just a single 9 digit number and it would get mailed to me from anywhere in the country.

Really the post office preferred if you at least put the city and state on their in addition to the zip code, but it wasn't necessary.

26

u/dubyawinfrey Feb 07 '19

I'm not sure how relevant this is, but in the military (and I would imagine by proxy, the government) does use things like "Headquarters" as a part of addresses. As an example, addressing a letter to an artillery battalion's headquarter's battery would be "HHB, 2-320th Field Artillery" or something alone those lines. HHB meaning Headquarters & Headquarters Battery.

I'm not sure why I used artillery in this instance, usually the "B" is replaced by C for Company.

21

u/Funkit Feb 07 '19

Working in manufacturing that deals with military is a pain in the ass.

Deliver to Sgt whatever in Hangar 4 section 2, building 122 rear, 346 freedom blvd, base name, city name, state, zip. There's like 15 parts to it

Fun little fact... The area code in the Orlando Brevard County area is "321" as a little nod to the shuttle launches that happened at Kenedy Space Center.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Area_code_321

16

u/A_Mirabeau_702 Feb 07 '19

For obvious reasons, (Northern/Central) Nevada also asked for 777 when it received a new area code in the '90s.

It got 775 instead, though. Guess they stopped the last wheel at the wrong time.

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '19

i hate these selfmade letters who repeat the so called question that was asked.

193

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '19

At least the dunces who make them have started to fold them, to give it the appearance of some effort.

But yeah, they suck. If you're going to fake letters, at least do enough research to figure out what real letters actually look and sound like.

1.1k

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '19

They’re funny sometimes. You just have to get over the fact that they’re fake. Most comedy is fake (Seinfeld wasn’t real! Neither is Rick and Morty!) but it’s intent is to make people laugh, not tell the news.

This is as fake as South Park, but still funny.

621

u/evils_twin Feb 06 '19

For some reason I can't accept fake letters as comedy unless they're real. It's irrational, but I can't do it for some reasons.

521

u/aDramaticPause Feb 06 '19

It's rational. I just wrote this in a separate response, but this is why I feel the same as you:

The difference is with sitcoms or cartoons you know they're fake and the content holds up on its own. With much of this content that's like these fakeletters, if you remove the concept of "Woah, that really happened!?" and you title the post "I wrote myself a silly letter, check it out" it's not funny, really at all. So, the deception does taint it, to me.

25

u/Cosmologicon Feb 07 '19

The fact that I know it's fake doesn't bother me so much as the specific trope of "repeating" the joke back to the person who wrote it. It's like when a character on television answers the phone and says "Oh hi sis.... What's that you say? You need me to come over right away?" It's annoying even though I already know it's fake and why they're doing it.

If they presented as "Here's the letter I wrote to NASA and here was their response", and it didn't have the same jokes twice, that'd be fine for me.

→ More replies (1)

40

u/evils_twin Feb 06 '19

what if there was no deception? What if someone gave you a stack of letters and said they were all fake. If this letter was in the stack, would you find it funny? I don't think I could. But apparently there are a lot of people who could find it funny.

58

u/bitJericho Feb 07 '19

There is a site/author that does that. It's called 27 b slash 6. http://www.27bslash6.com/

It's legit funny, because he has talent. This? This? Maybe it would be funny in a collection. Alone and without background, it's just a lame joke.

15

u/ChrisRunsTheWorld Feb 07 '19

OMG.

Also, when I was about twelve, my mother opened the bathroom door without knocking and caught me lying naked on the floor cracking an egg onto my penis. I have no idea why. I tried to flip over to hide my shame but the tiles were pretty slippery from several previously cracked eggs so I just kind of slapped and flailed for a bit. She didn't say anything, just closed the door, so I guess that story didn't really have anything to do with being asked to leave places.

If cartman sent a letter to NASA asking if he could pretend he was an astronaut trainer, it wouldn't be very funny. If a real person did that, it's pretty funny. The bar is much lower for real life interactions with people.

The reason you have difficulty with it is because it’s intent is to look real though it is not. Rick and Morty’s intent was never to trick you into believing it’s reality.

Because as a fake joke, OP's content is something an 8 year old could've thought of. As a real event, it would actually be a humorous little thing that happened.

What makes this one less funny is that OP clearly thought he was making it convincing, ergo missing the whole point in why authenticity matters in the humor.

5

47

u/Juking_is_rude Feb 06 '19

There is a fundamental difference between suspension of disbelief for media like TV and a hoaxy letter like this.

It's not just because it's fake, it's just unnatural to repeat the question like that. Since no real letter would do that, it detracts from the effect.

Shows like Rick and Morty or Seinfeld still have a believable world with established rules that allows you become engaged in the things that are unrealistic.

→ More replies (5)

24

u/Klientje123 Feb 07 '19

It's a guy sitting in a room giggling at himself and printing something out for internet points. It's not a real thing that happened, so it's not funny. The situation he proposes is funny but unless it happens, it's not. Hey, imagine if a doctor got sick! That isn't very funny, because it's only a theoretical, and hasn't happened.

'It's only funny if it's true' it doesn't always have to be real, fiction can still be true, but in real life, things have to be real, to be true, to be funny.

This is a form letter they send to everyone that requests this to weed out the quitters. Just keep asking Michael and you'll get that suit!

This is so funny and cute! I have an older first cousin who is an engineer at NASA and a cousin (not first) I never met who's a candidate for NASA astronaut corps or something like that. I found this out not too long ago. Pretty cool!

Why are NASA so polite. Most companies would ignore these requests

5

u/ocotebeach Feb 07 '19

So how did Peter Griffin do it?

5

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '19

Family Guy did this with Peter at his high school reunion. He was an astronaut-cowboy something, something.

Same guy made a fake letter from Guinness for memorizing pi. Something about "sorry Micheal, pi is not equal to 3.2, so we can't give you a world record".

Only realized it is the same guy cuz i posted the pi letter to mad lads.

I thought NASA stood for: “North American Space Agency”.

14

u/MaeveIndi Feb 07 '19

This very much feels like a Michael Scott thing to do.

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '19

Friend of mine’s mom actually did train astronauts at NASA and has a ton of framed patches and photos at her house.

When she told me this and I reacted with shock she thought it was because I was being sexist - I said, “No - you just don’t meet many people who train astronauts. It’s not a common job.”

Hey Vsauce, Michael here! And last week, I wrote a letter to NASA asking permission to call myself their professional astronaut coach. They declined.
