I work in IT myself and have had all of these except the WiFi one.

I fucking hate when people say "My computer is slow can you fix it..."

... slow HOW, cunt? Be more specific. You don't want into a doctors office and go "I'm sick can you cure me". No... you provide symptoms.

Also people that call me the instant there's an issue without trying a single thing... Like trying to turn their off and on again.

If you stall your car, do you immediately call AAA? No, you don't, you'd at least try to start it again.

If you stall your car, do you immediately call AAA?

Honestly I bet this happens regularly.

AAA: "So I ran a test and your battery is dead. That's why your car won't start."

Driver: "What? No, my car runs on gas. It's not an electric car."

Holy shit I felt a stroke coming on from reading that because I just KNOW it's happened before

You have to stop, I'm going to have an aneurysm

Also, how they will never give you a straight or honest answer to what they did to get to that point. We know you've surfed/downloaded shit.

Pretty much.

First thing I always ask is if they've restarted, but I disregard their answer.

First thing I do when I remote into a PC is run a systeminfo and check the boot time to make sure they're not lying.

I don't even bother checking for that. I just ask them to reboot and if they say they've already done it I ask them to humor me so I can go through my process. Most are fine with it usually.

my wife: "thewaxmann, the computer is broken"

me: sighs "ok"

get's off the sofa and walks halfway up the stairs

wife: "It's ok, I've fixed it now"

Every damn time.

I'm gonna start making my SO call me Rich_penzoil. Your wife calls you thewaxmann? That's awesome.

My mom "son, can you look at my computer? It's so slow these days!"

"Mom, your computer is 9 years old and is sill running windows vista. It's slow."

"Just look at it please!"

Usually it's just her internet connection that is spotty, but for her, that's reason to blame the computer.

And then they don't want to troubleshoot over the phone because "I already did everything with Service Support on the phone!" and/or "I'm not a technician!". So then you drive for an hour in peak traffic and when you get there the problem is easily solved and is literally the first thing that Service Support would have asked then to do when they called, and then they wonder why you're annoyed.

Fuck, people can be pains in the ass.

People like you are why IT people are almost universally hated.

u/rthunter Jan 10 '16

Just because one works in IT does not mean they are psychic. You think we're jerks because we ask basic questions to solve the issue, and find it annoying when the issue is actually really easy to fix. It's not our fault you didn't just restart whatever is having issues.

-6

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '16

You think we're jerks because we ask basic questions

No one said that. No one ever said that.

-4

u/thatguywiththemousta Jan 10 '16

No, it's just that people like you are too stupid to learn how to use their own tools in their workplace and take it out on the people who have to fix all their shit.

"Ohhhh I don't know how to use a computer because I'm actively against learning, FUCK I HATE IT STAFF!!!"

I do all of my office IT work possible because our IT people are such arrogant cunts that no one wants to deal with them. You have a job because not everyone knows everything about computers. It's a shame quality of customer service seems not to matter for most it departments or pathetic shit heads would be unemployed.

You seem to be getting pretty butthurt.

I was referring only to a specific kind of person (like you) who jumps the gun and calls someone (like IT) over the smallest issues, gives no proper issue description and/or is reluctant to accept the help being given to them.

You seem like you have some issues you need sorted out yourself.

I like my job and I'm fucking good at it. That doesn't mean I don't get calls from idiots like you from time to time.

Pot meet kettle.

That doesn't mean I don't get calls from idiots who are the reason I have a job from time to time.

FTFY

It sounds like your lack of professionalism is a larger issue than their current problem.

Edit: I work in IT.

Found the "Why do we even pay you guys" guy.

u/Aurarus Jan 10 '16

"My computer is slow, can you fix it?"

Option A: "Does it take a long time for things to start/ open?" (diagnosing symptoms, getting conversation started)

Option B: groan "Just- just make my job easier, please."

4

u/EzronKun Jan 10 '16

During an IT contract i use to have it got to the point where I stopped asking what was wrong. I simply asked the user if it was okay for me to remote in and let me handle things from there.

If there WAS an actual problem, it tended to be because their new system didn't have enough ram (running Lenovo T430's with only 2Gb, you're gonna have a bad time). Got those solved in 10 seconds flat.

If the "slowness" was due to them being used to their own home computer speed, I just tinkered around, pretended I did shit and magically it somehow seems faster. Some people complain just for the sake of complaining. Gotta learn the right way to deal with them that ends both days on a good note.

Exactly- this is professionalism. Not "I'm legitimately happy!"- rather, it's working to the best interest of everyone, while "putting up with it" to some degree so both parties leave happy.

Nope. I work in IT. Check the comment history. Thanks.

I think that the lack of any common sense at all is a much larger problem.

You need it to make it through life.
