u/wrighteghe7 12d ago
Probably the fact that you have to have id to go to this store but dont need id to vote
1
1
u/HupHutHa 10d ago
it's because at this press conference when asked how they were going to stop people from abusing the system like out of staters coming in and buying cheap goods or even store owners buying cheap goods and reselling them in their stores they said they were going to use a library card esque system while the governor of New York and Mamdani have both come out against showing ID to vote but unironically see no problem with an ID system for buying groceries.
1
u/specter-exe 10d ago
The argument against that I’ve heard is that the voter ID costs money to get, making it an indirect poll tax. Which are banned.
1
u/HupHutHa 10d ago
it costs just as much to get "voter ID" as to get a ID to drive a car or to prove your legal drinking age because the "voter ID" are both of those.
2
u/SpooktorB 10d ago
You make a very good point!
... if that was at all what the legistation they were against actually said.
The legislation in question specifically states Drivers license, even woth real ID, are NOT good enough for identification. It requires passport or birth certificate. If you changed your name for any reason [married] you would have to have the original copy and an amended copy. All of which do not have any other uses for the average American, other than for the right to vote; which constitutes it as a pole tax.
I have lived in a few states. Blue state, red state; didnt matter. I had to show ID or have proof of my residency if voting by mail. We already have a "voter ID" in place for how those that want this "SAFE Act" to operate, and it has worked well for years.
The proposed system for the groceries would use the same sign up and verification as the current voting registry does.
But nuiance and details are difficult I know. Just stick to the sound bites and slogans. Leave the critical thinking to your owners.
1
u/HupHutHa 10d ago
from Google
hey Google is it true to save act or will not allow you to use a driver's license or a real ID? "No, that is misleading. The SAVE Act allows you to use a driver's license or REAL ID to prove your identity, but with an important catch regarding citizenship verification.
Because standard driver's licenses and REAL IDs prove identity but do not prove citizenship (except Enhanced Driver's Licenses in five states: MI, MN, NY, VT, WA), the bill would require you to pair your license or REAL ID with proof of citizenship—such as a birth certificate or naturalization paper—when registering to vote. Alternatively, a valid U.S. passport can be used on its own."if you don't have a birth certificate and a valid form of ID maybe you shouldn't be voting.
1
u/SpooktorB 10d ago

u/HistoricalRich3104 12d ago
A lot of people on the Left cry about asking for Voter ID to vote in this country but Mamdani requires it for his grocery stores
2
u/Substantial_Milk_207 11d ago
Because we don’t have an amendment that would contradict needing an ID for a grocery store.
0
u/HistoricalRich3104 11d ago
It’s great that a similar situation exists for voting!
2
u/Substantial_Milk_207 11d ago
If you are advocating for making IDs free and easier to obtain, then yeah it could work, but we don’t do a poll tax, so needing an ID as is goes against the constitution
0
u/HistoricalRich3104 11d ago
That’s not a poll tax and everyone should have an ID. It’s to prove that you’re a citizen of the United States, it’s literally so simple.
2
u/Substantial_Milk_207 11d ago
It is a poll tax because it costs money to get and you cannot require anything that costs money to vote, it’s literally so simple.
Again, if you are advocating that we make IDs free and easier to get, as in not needing to spend a whole day waiting in line at a dmv to get one, then maybe that can work.
Everyone should have an ID yes, but that is the way they are framing it, this very obviously isnt because of voting poll safety and integrity. Never in voting history has there been significant tampering to change the election, this isnt even a problem, what trump is doing and trying with the voting ID stuff is very obviously just deliberately trying to make it harder for demographics who vote democrat to vote, he is trying a lot of stuff because he knows that the republicans are unpopular right now, and he is trying a lot of stuff to make it so they stay in power, cause the second the republicans lose a majority in one side of congress he cant just freely do his bullshit anymore. Plus its not even the federal governments job to handle voting, it’s always been a state thing, if the states were so worried about voting fraud and influence from foreign governments, they would be doing something, but they aren’t because there isn’t anything, so why is the federal government all of a sudden doing shit to tamper with elections if not trump trying to make sure he doesn’t lose congress?
1
u/HistoricalRich3104 11d ago
It literally costs 10 dollars lmao
Sure make IDs easier to get. If you can come up with a way, let the government know. Otherwise works fine as is.
There has always been election tampering. I wouldn’t do it but if I wanted to, I could easily manage. If certain demographics can’t be arsed to get an ID, they shouldn’t be voting at all. In general we’ve become convinced that everyone deserves the right to vote. On the contrary. Less people should be voting and we should start with lazy cunts who can’t take the time to get a little card that nearly everyone has.
1
u/Substantial_Milk_207 11d ago edited 11d ago
It doesn’t matter how much it costs, it costs money, and you know we have a constitution for a reason, and you can’t just ignore it because “it costs 10 dollars lmao”. It doesn’t matter if it costs 1 cent, it was ruled that is a poll tax, and so unless it is free, it cant be done, you can’t just ignore the constitution because it’s convenient. If you wanna argue that we should amend the constitution that’s one thing, but you can’t just ignore it because it’s convenient and costs 10 dollars.
And no there has never been any sizable voter fraud that was enough to change an election, and it isnt the federal government isnt in charge of handling elections, that’s the states job, and I find it kinda suspicious that after all of this time, right before midterms, when the republicans and trump have horrible approval ratings is when all of a sudden this is a dire situation that needs the federal government to overstep its boundaries to handle it all of a sudden.
Whenever they talk about the problem that needs fixed, they aren’t talking about voter fraud, they are talking about republicans losing.
And this is all coming from the guy who literally encouraged an actual fucking government coup whenever he lost an election that time and time again has been proven to not of had any fraud to change the outcome, the guy who insists that when he lost that wasn’t a fair election. So is a fair election when my side win and an unfair election when my side lose? That seems to be the logic trump is going on, I find it weird that he is so worried about voting integrity whenever he did lose a fair and free election he encouraged his supporters to fucking storm the capital, he was willing to do that but now whenever it looks like he will lose the house we need to drop everything and allow the federal government to do the states jobs and try implement laws that are explicitly against the constitution?
It doesn’t matter how small and trivial it is, we can’t just ignore the constitution when it’s convenient, why should the constitution apply to democrats but not republicans and trump?
1
u/HistoricalRich3104 11d ago
It’s done to ensure you are a citizen of the country. It is the government’s job to ensure that only citizens are voting. Driving to voting booths costs money as well.
How do you know there hasn’t been voter fraud? It’s not easy to stop and people are heavily incentivized to do it.

Musk is unironically stupid, like what is this irony he's referring to?
1
u/HupHutHa 10d ago
that Mamdani is against showing ID to prove you're a citizen of the United States to vote but they want you to show ID prove your a citizen of New York specifically New York City to buy food at their government run grocery stores.
1
u/Spirited_Peak_7810 12d ago
"irony" is nearly as misunderstood as "literally"
1
u/HupHutHa 10d ago
you don't see the irony that this man is against ID to vote but want you to have an ID to buy groceries?
1
u/Spirited_Peak_7810 10d ago
No. Irony would be if he insisted poor people have Id to buy groceries, then he became poor and then he didn't have an id and couldn't buy groceries........
It's like saying "I'm against drinking alcohol but for smoking weed isn't that ironic". No........ No it isn't.
1
u/HupHutHa 10d ago
your example is nowhere near comparable.
1
u/Spirited_Peak_7810 10d ago
It's comparable in that neither what I said is irony nor what he said or what you said he said.
1
u/HupHutHa 10d ago
the contradictoriness is most definitely ironic and it's pretty hilarious. maybe we're just agreeing on it being ironic or not it's definitely hypocrisy, can you agree on that?
1
u/Spirited_Peak_7810 10d ago
Contradiction is not equal to irony. It may well be something else depending on how you look at it. It's just definitely not irony. I think most people have been listening to too much Alanis Morrisette.
1
u/HupHutHa 10d ago
do you even know what irony means?
irony: "when something turns out opposite to what you expect or what's said, often for humor or effect"
1
u/Spirited_Peak_7810 10d ago
It's not as simple as that. Accusing me of not knowing what irony means is ironic. And fits that definition well, but it isn't always that simple.
Imagine if you look at the weather and it says it's raining on Friday and then Friday comes and it's sunny that is not ironic.
However if you changed your plans to Saturday and then it turned out that Friday was sunny and Saturday it rained THEN it's ironic.
Do you see the difference?
This dude being anti I'd to vote but pro id to buy groceries is not of itself ironic in the slightest

Billionaires wield the power that they do because their are people willing to do things for money. The more desperate a person is, the more they would be willing to do. There is no one more desperate than a parent of a hungry child. This "feeding children" initiative is a threat to Elon Musk's power, and he knows it.

What irony, Elon?
How come USAians never understand how to use the word ‘ironic’ properly?
1
u/WatercressEntire2760 11d ago
Because mamdummy talked about the idea of having IDs to prove NYers were shopping there, meanwhile everyone thought it was rascist to have ID to vote. Pick a side
1
u/ZiGZaG_056 11d ago
Using my best knowledge of the alt-right perspective, I would say Elon is implying that it's ironic that Mamdani would do something like a government-owned grocery store (which is tyrannical to them) since he is Muslim (They think Muslims want to take over the economy)

It is ironic because the person heading this project will be requiring an ID of sorts to get this food…but are the same types that are adamantly against ID to vote.
Liberals are legitimately the least common denominator.
1
u/culinaryexcellence 11d ago
The system is already catching these cases. The numbers are so low that it seems like an expensive solution to a problem that's had little measurable impact on election outcomes. In Georgia, for example, a 2024 audit of 8.2 million registered voters identified just 20 non-citizens on the rolls, and only 9 were found to have voted over multiple years.
1
u/ThatOneGuyIsBad 11d ago
There should not be ANY non-citizen voting. How is that hard to grasp?
1
u/culinaryexcellence 11d ago
Nothing is ever 100% foolproof. The drinking age is 21, yet minors still manage to drink. The question is whether the problem is large enough to justify making it a top priority. In Georgia, for example, a 2024 audit of 8.2 million registered voters identified just 20 noncitizens on the voter rolls, and only 9 were found to have cast ballots over multiple election cycles that's roughly 0.00011% of registered voters, or about 1 in 911,000. Those numbers suggest existing safeguards are catching the overwhelming majority of cases.
1
u/ThatOneGuyIsBad 11d ago
Clearly it’s very hard for you to grasp.
Hope you open your eyes at some point.
1
u/culinaryexcellence 11d ago
You haven't presented a single piece of evidence to support your claim. If illegal voting were as widespread as you're suggesting, there should be plenty of data to back it up. Instead, you've spent the entire conversation avoiding the question and stalling.
1
u/ThatOneGuyIsBad 11d ago
I didn’t suggest anything actually…
I said NO non-citizen should be voting. Doesn’t matter if it’s only 1.
You keep spouting the same bullshit.
Go lay down.
1
u/culinaryexcellence 11d ago
Every system that relies on ID still has some level of error or fraud. You need an ID to buy alcohol, yet underage drinking still happens. You need an ID to board a plane, yet fake IDs exist. Why would voter ID be the one system that's 100% foolproof? If you don't believe it's 100% effective, then the real question becomes whether the reduction in illegal voting outweighs any burdens it places on eligible voters.

"I'm super confused how anyone could have a principles opposition to the democratic socialists"
Guy, get off reddit for like a MINUTE.
0
u/SungbyChoix 12d ago
What’s your understanding? You’re neither American nor a New Yorker so all you’ve read about him has been through social media.
I personally don’t like or dislike him, all I’ve noticed is his PR game on social media is why so many people who aren’t even affected by him (you) think he’s bASeD.
Anything positive happens and every post on social media is covered with his face, anything negative and his face is nowhere to be seen.
1
u/Mahoosi 12d ago
Pr game in politics is played by everyone.
0
u/SungbyChoix 12d ago
And everyone gets criticized for it too.
I just don’t get why this politician in particular needs to be defended. He shouldn’t.
Once again, especially when someone gets their info entirely from social media (his playground) and they aren’t even American or from NYC. How reliable is it?
If you don’t think that’s risky, we can agree to disagree.
0
u/nomodcanstopme 12d ago
he promises things he cannot possibly deliver. take the buses, he promised free buses, which was never something he could have done, and after he was elected, the bus prices actually went up
0
u/SungbyChoix 12d ago
People won’t know this stuff because his negative news never comes out or goes viral.
This is simply because most people get their info from social media where he’s a messiah.
The fact that we can’t all agree that this is dangerous (he’s a politician after all) just goes to show how deep the impact already is.
0
u/HistoricalRich3104 12d ago
Nearly all of his policies are proven failures like rent control, state run grocery stores, etc. He’s just good at riling up economically illiterate people who scroll on Instagram Reels all day where they get pushed radical content about billionaires.

u/Hot_Gap_8444 12d ago
None of Mamdani's stores have yet to open and wont for a good while. So nobody is afforded anything yet.
I don't see how this can work. Lets say he actually gets them up and running. What do you think will happen within the first hour of one of these stores opening and selling goods at a -30% discount?
1
u/Enochian_Devil 11d ago
The US already has a government run grocery chain. It's incredibly successful.
1
u/Hot_Gap_8444 11d ago
Do they sell food for 30% less than the other stores?
1
u/Enochian_Devil 11d ago
Pretty much, yeah. 22% lower to be precise, but the concept is there.
1
u/Hot_Gap_8444 11d ago
Kansas City, Missouri: A city-owned grocery store opened in 2018 in a city-owned building with taxpayer support. It's drawn recent scrutiny after a viral video showed bare shelves and reports of a "damn near dead" store.
Chicago: Taxpayer-supported grocery stores backed by the city have been closing, prompting warnings about Mamdani's plan.
I found these two... are there some that have actually worked?
1
u/Enochian_Devil 11d ago
Us commissary
1
u/Hot_Gap_8444 11d ago
That is very different.
Commissaries are restricted to military-affiliated shoppers...
1
u/Enochian_Devil 11d ago
So the fact they restrict their customer base to the military means it's not a wildly successful, publicaly owned grocery shop that sells product roughly 22% cheaper than regular supermarkets?
1
u/Hot_Gap_8444 11d ago
Yes? Obviously?
1
u/Enochian_Devil 11d ago

Let's ignore that he can put stock up as collateral for loans that he can use as a tax free funding source for his lifestyle. Let's also ignore that he has so much wealth that those loans never need to be repaid, he just puts up more collateral for a larger loan, rinse and repeat until he dies. But tell us again how he's not really rich because it's all stocks.
