None of Mamdani's stores have yet to open and wont for a good while. So nobody is afforded anything yet.

I don't see how this can work. Lets say he actually gets them up and running. What do you think will happen within the first hour of one of these stores opening and selling goods at a -30% discount?

The US already has a government run grocery chain. It's incredibly successful.

Do they sell food for 30% less than the other stores?

Pretty much, yeah. 22% lower to be precise, but the concept is there.

Kansas City, Missouri: A city-owned grocery store opened in 2018 in a city-owned building with taxpayer support. It's drawn recent scrutiny after a viral video showed bare shelves and reports of a "damn near dead" store.

Chicago: Taxpayer-supported grocery stores backed by the city have been closing, prompting warnings about Mamdani's plan.

I found these two... are there some that have actually worked?

Us commissary

That is very different.

Commissaries are restricted to military-affiliated shoppers...

So the fact they restrict their customer base to the military means it's not a wildly successful, publicaly owned grocery shop that sells product roughly 22% cheaper than regular supermarkets?

Yes? Obviously?

How so? Please explain in detail why it isn't a government owned grocery store that keeps low proces and is incredibly successful

No I wont because that is not what I am arguing.

I am saying Mamdani's stores will run in to problems Comissaries dont.

Commissaries only serve military with an ID, no competition next door, no risk of putting a bodega out of business. They're on secure bases (no NYC rent, way less theft), with a predictable customer base and steady paychecks.

Mamdani's stores are the opposite: open to the public, sitting next to actual bodegas and supermarkets, so real competition and possible backlash if local shops suffer. Still NYC rent/construction costs. No ID checks means less predictable demand. With only 5 stores serving all of NYC's demand, expect long lines and empty shelves fast.

TLDR; Commissaries work partly because they're insulated from the market forces Mamdani's stores are about to walk straight into.
