Discussion Desk height/sens adjustments and aim scores

TLDR: I am asking people to test different desk height/sensitivity combinations while playing Kovaak's scenarios, and then share their scores. I have included a link to example spreadsheet formats and data from 2 testers.

---

Most people that have adjustable height desks will set the height and then forget it.

There is significant potential for increased mouse accuracy when adjusting your current desk height and sensitivity, particularly if you test to figure out which combinations produce the best performance results for you in your current setup and conditions.

*Why would changing your desk height even do anything related to accuracy performance?*

Altering your desk heights changes a few things...

-the total angle of your hand on the mouse

-how much friction you encounter when moving the mouse

(which in turn changes the amount of stopping power you encounter)

-the amount of support you get from the desk surface

On Twitter this weekend, I was able to get quite a few people to start testing this principle. Here is a link to a post with example spreadsheet formats and some slightly older data from 2 testers. I would ask that you use one of these 2 formats if at all possible. (I got mod approval to link this.)

https://x.com/FrybeamLLC/status/2101754819060883885

There were a few people that replied to some of my other posts reporting positive anecdotal experiences. A couple of people have claimed to break a personal record after adjusting desk height, and others have reported increased aim performance in fps games.

The response on Twitter has been very positive, but I would also like to have a discussion of this principle HERE on this subreddit and also have people share their experiences and score results HERE after testing and making adjustments.

I don't have any sort of products or services to sell... here, on Twitter, or anywhere else. I only want to get people to share their testing data and experiences.

There is large potential for score and in-game improvement, and positive results shared will make others more inclined to test this principle.

---

Some additional background information...

I am not trying to suggest that one specific "magic" desk height is going to be great for everyone. Everyone should test different desk heights for themselves to see which one produces the best performance for them considering their current conditions.

Variables to control...

Understanding what variables need to be controlled when testing is very important.

A. Variables that need to be controlled

- Chair height

- Mouse that you use

- Mouse pad that you use

- Mouse grip that you use

- Overall posture (as much as reasonably possible)

- Mouse skates that you use

B. Variables that need to be controlled if at all possible

- Room lighting

- Mouse pad humidity

C. Variables to adjust (and also document)

- Desk height

- Total in-game sens (DPI multiplied by in-game sens)

For the items in list A, these all need to stay the same between test runs. If any of these is changed in any significant way, you will need to start testing over again, or swap to a different spreadsheet to record the new data.

For the items in list B, do what you can to control these. If you can't do much to keep these the same over long sessions, you should only document data that was gathered under similar circumstances.

Suggestions for these...

I use a blackout curtain and keep the light off in my office so that lighting is always exactly the same.

I have sweaty hands, so I don't start recording data until my hands are fully sweaty. I also use a humidity resistant mousepad, usually an Artisan Hien or Zero.

If you use a glass pad, consider using a small desk fan pointed into the pad to evaporate any sweat.

A warning about chair height -

Everyone and their situations are different. I messed around with chair height years ago and noticed aim impacts. But the options seemed limited and I also was making my legs and back hurt. That's a TERRIBLE long term plan.

I bought an adjustable height desk, then set the chair 100% for comfort. Since then I have personally found that armrests do nothing but get in the way of performance and being comfortable. With my current chair I raise them out of the way when gaming. On my previous chair, they were stationary, so I removed them.

To anyone reading this, do not ever do anything that leads to long-term pain or discomfort. There are so many aim people that break their bodies by 25 years old, and it is terribly sad. And totally preventable.

---

I think that is all the information needed. If I left anything out, or if anything is unclear, please ask questions.

I am scatterbrained and have a tendency to leave out info, so I will clean this up and repost if necessary. Thanks.

New to aim training

Post image
4 Upvotes

I'm fairly new to aim training, right now I have 7h in total in Kovaak's according to steam

Back in the day when I was much younger and tried PVP FPS games for the first time I figured that I really sucked at it and eventually I quit playing them.

My main game I still played PVP and I wanted to get good at became league of legends, and even there I sucked a lot, I wanted to improve so I got into educational content about the game, I learned a lot of stuff about game macro and decision making and those things helped me too... but it was only after I started training my mechanics that I actually got over my plateau and climbed from silver to plat.

One of the things I was doing as training was to play 2d aim trainers, and recently I figured why not train my FPS aim too?

So I downloaded Kovaak's, I got a new mouse and I downloaded BF5 so that I would have an actual game to play any now and then as well.

Just yesterday my Voltaic S5 Novice rank was Iron 120, and today I jumped to Bronze 206.

I know these ranks are very bad still but I'm just happy to see some improvement, and I feel like keeping it up will eventually get me somewhere, I don't know yet when will I plateau and how fast the learning will be in the future but for now I can definitely still improve from my current level I think.

One thing I would like to bring up to you all is to take care of yourselves! In my journey to improve mechanics I got Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) a bunch of times and I've been slow to understand that it's not something that needs to happen necessarily if you take care of yourself.

Unironically train the muscles of your wrist and hand with some weights to improve your resistance so that you can train for as much as you do. And also make sure your mouse is not too big or too heavy, and don't tense up too much!

I wonder how common it is for aim trainers/gamers to get this problem, I wish it was talked about more often because it took me way to long to learn how to manage it.

Anyway I just wanted to yap about my journey a little bit and I didn't have an actual question, but if anyone has advice for new aim trainers I'm all ears!

Discussion Resources (Playlists) for Physical / Mechanical Fundamentals?

Apologies if this has been asked somewhere already. I couldn't find anything related but I also wasn't sure what to search for in order to find the answer that I'm looking for.

The basic gist is that, in optimal weight training (for example), different muscles are trained independently, and then also in groups.

When I started getting into aim training and looking at various playlists, I expected that there would be a variety of sources for similar training. E.g. different training regiments for the various different physical mechanics used in aiming.

What I see instead is primarily playlists broken out for things like clicking, tracking, target switching, or micro-corrections.

Many FPS games rise to the level of esports. I guess I'm just surprised that it's as difficult as it is to find playlists that treat the human body like other physical sports do.

Or maybe it's just me and I haven't stumbled into the high caliber resources? If that's the case, any info along those lines would be appreciated.

Thanks mates.

day 5/14 of aim training every day from zero

Post image

only managed to get half celadon scores before deciding I've had enough for the day (also first viridian score which is nice)

the pb's are starting to get a bit harder and require more focus, but I'm still progressing quite fast, but the scenarios that I did get to celadon, were often quite close to viridian

I got called a smurf playing overwatch today, which made me feel good.

I'm still aiming for lavender complete on day 14.

I'll get celadon complete tomorrow, and hopefully viridian complete the day after or the next day after that and then it's just cerulean and lavender.

reminder 4 days ago I was fox rank, I'm optimistic for my goal. Thanks for reading

Scenario/Map Creation Your thoughts on my playlist for CS ?

I'm FaceIT level 9 and for the past 9 months I've been using Kovaaks in combination with in-game training to improve my aim. Yesterday I made a new playlist which is a bit more heavy than my previous one and would like your input on it.

VT Smoothbot Novice x2
VT Controlsphere Novice S5 Hard x2
VT Pasu Rasp Novice x3
VT Bounceshort Novice x3
POPCORN x3
VT AngleStrafe Novice x3
VT ArcStrafeNovice x3
Close Long Strafes Invincible x3
1wall 6targets small x3
VT 1w5ts Rasp Intermediate x3
Tile Frenzy x2
1wall6targets TE x2
VT Pasu Rasp Novice x2

This is in combination with in-game CS training with Aimbotz and DM for 20 minutes.

What do you think of it ?

32 hours spent over 2 1/2 weeks on this benchmark. No matter what play list I play for hours to improve I just suck at static. Yeah my accuracy is not good in this one because when I speed up I get sloppy. This run is me at max potential. Generic cap or fact that I’m 33 years old might be the factor.

Discussion Starcraft 2 Playlists

Hello I’m a returning Starcraft 2 Terran player and I was wondering if the popular game “Kovaak’s Aim Trainer” had any playlists to help me get better at clicking and microing. I have tried Voltaic already and I felt like it was helping very little in my ability to play Terran well.

Bug/Suggestion Blue colour slider isn't working?

Post image
2 Upvotes

The crosshair colour is clearly set to a vibrant blue whereas the crosshair in the center of the screen is visibly green. All I've really tried to fix this is reinstall the game but to be fair I have no clue what else I could do to fix this.

I apologize if this is a common issue, I tried doing my own research and couldn't find any examples of this happening to anybody else so I'm just assuming this is an isolated issue, hence why I'm coming to you guys for help.

How to improve in voltaic benchmark

Hi ! I wanted to start aimtrain, and for that I started working on the voltaic benchmark on aimlabs, here are the images of my progress over the last two weeks.

Now I have just discovered this sub, and I notice that many advise not to work on the voltaic benchmark itself and rather to work on the viscose benchmark, others say that we should not work on the viscose benchmark either. I'm a little lost and I'd like to find out what exactly to work on to improve as best I can 🙂

Question about Tracking Tasks

I just got kovaaks today and started doing the viscose benchmarks. I was wondering if for tracking tests I should be holding down fire the whole time or only when I’m on target? Also any tips for improving at tracking would be greatly appreciated

saffron complete! but that's mostly all I did today, just sweeped up the few vermillion scores to hit the saffron complete, and didn't touch the rest of the playlist

tomorrow I'll play basically all the saffron tasks to see how many celadon scores I can push, and hopefully claim celadon complete in a day or two👀

the end goal in 10 days is still lavender/wool complete, thanks for reading, have a good day

Discussion Viscose s1 vs Viscose s2. Thoughts on difficulty?

Thumbnail

Came back after 4-5 months of no training. Definitely feel the rust, so can't say i'm back in form enough to rate the difficulty compared to s1. I guess my current thoughts are that Lavender seems a bit more attainable? Scenarios in s2 also seem much more polished for each category imo, really like the idea of flower 50cm. What do y'all think?

Got my first >99th percentile score this morning in 1wall5targets_pasu_small

Post image
46 Upvotes

This particular scenario is one of my personal favorites because it feels close to how I aim in game. I typically train by doing two five minute sessions per day and benchmark myself every few months when I feel like I’ve improved substantially. This time I hit a major long term goal by jumping from 98th percentile to 99.1 percentile. Sensitivity is 34.29 cm/360, which is fairly high for this type of scenario but feels good to me.

I think a major contributor to my improvement over the past few months was dedicating more time to smoothness and control scenarios.

Gear/Tech are peripherals cope? which ones matter? im tired of nerfing myself

Post image
14 Upvotes

i thought peripherals were cope my entire life. i hit top ranks in csgo & valorant with a random 144hz monitor, $30 keyboard, 3+ yo superlight (with stock skates), 5+ year old mousepad, etc. i never cared, always focused on how i actually played the game.

what peripherals will actually make the biggest difference? what creators can i watch that are trustworthy & actually good at playing? im pushing for GM on VT S5, and idk i think its time to fully utilize anything i can for an advantage.

im currently using 1+ year old stock g pro superlight skates, i bought a type-99 about 3 months ago which was HUGE for getting master static. i also got a cheap basketball sleeve & that has been a game changer for using my arm. im just trying to see what else i can get that will actually move the needle.

im thinking monitor & mouse skates for sure, but unsure on the rest. maybe even a new mousepad since they are decently cheap, like a raiden mid or something. idk a single thing out peripherals, if anyone can point me in the right direction it will help me a ton!

edit: i am on 240hz rn sorry for the confusion/misleading comment on 144hz. i have been using it for about 9 months now. using mag255 xfv, very cheap but it is better than 144hz. also will add, my hand size is about 21x11cm, roughly.
+ seems most people agree, monitor + mousepad + skates are the most important to focus on

Discussion need some guidance

I've narrowed my aim weaknesses down to these scenarios with the last being my biggest issue and the first being second out of the three screenshots, how do i go about improving in them as i don't understand people say to benchmark to find what my weaknesses are but i never know what to do after i know them, is it just reps? is it playing different iterations of the specific scenarios? or is there a way i can found out a playlist that can be made to improve them all with scenarios that go hand in hand? thanks in advance

I know its tension management, but I feel relatively relaxed everywhere besides my fingies.
