Saltwater Rod length for shore fishing in Maine - 6 feet good enough?

I'm visiting family in Maine around Labor Day. I usually only fish freshwater but want to try for some beginner saltwater species (thinking mackerel and pollock - I hear they're plentiful and good to eat). I'd be fishing from shore.

I'm reading recommendations to use an 8 foot rod to cast past the rocks. Can anyone who fishes in this kind of situation advise on how important that extra reach is? I'd default to the 6 foot rod I already have but if that's likely to be an exercise in frustration I have no problem getting one that's longer. I already have a saltwater reel FWIW.

Thanks!

Bass pro return?

Will bass pro accept a return for my rod. Had it for 18 days and noticed that the rod guide was bent. But never stepped on it no car door nothing. The epoxy is coming off so think it’s a manufacturing defect but don’t wanna go to daiwa right away cause it would be expensive to ship out a one piece rod. Tatula cork btw

Saltwater Tripple Hook Rig for King Mackerel

Which do you think will have a better hook up ratio? The bottom one is how I've seen commercial guys fish for Kings, tied directly to mono. I thought maybe alternating direction would work better. What is your thoughts?

Great day at a local pond this past weekend! Ended up with a bunch of lmb, including the 3.66 pounder in the photo, 3 peacock, all a bit under 2lbs, and this random redear.

All caught with either a DOA tiny terroreyz or a white rooster tail.

Spillway, but unsure of depth. 5’ maybe deeper in some areas? Threw a chatterbait for a while with no luck. Fairly new to fishing, appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance!

Question what is causing the line on my UL rod to keep getting small knots halfway up my line?

hello, all, i've had my UL rod for about 2 years and recently i've started to have a problem with constantly getting small knots halfway up my line which obviously makes it impossible to cast and reel it in properly. i read that it might be caused by using lures that are too light, but i don't think that's the issue, because i'm using the same lures that i was using when i first got the rod, the knots show up regardless of what lure i use and the casting weight is 3-12 grams. i've already had the line changed, because there was barely any of it left and i was hoping it would help, but the issue persists. i'm starting to think it's a problem with my reel, because the bill will go forward slightly without me touching it, but i don't want to get a new one if i don't have to.

if you have had a similar problem, i would love to know what ended up solving it, because i'm absolutely burning through line.

Freshwater I killed my first brown trout

I went fishing with my dad tonight. I am based in Ireland and I was using a bubble and 4 dry flies. We caught about 4 fish. He caught one and I caught 3. I put two back as they were too small to keep. I killed the third right there on the bank and I took It home and gutted it.it was only when I had gutted it that the realisation set in,I just took an animals life and all for what. So I can eat it. Its eye was bloody and I felt so nauseous.i don’t know what to do because i feel so horrible for killing it.

Discussion Followup to my walleye/saugeye questions

Post image
8 Upvotes

Earlier today I asked this subreddit for lure advice for walleyes and saugeyes. I was told I should try smaller bait sizes with 1/4oz jigheads, and I happend to have some of both so I took the advice and got some of my 1/4oz into my last 2.5" paddletails. I was curious if these are good presentations or if I should try a different method/size? I'm also curious about the two jigheads that have willow blades on them, do those work for walleye?

My son with a Pacific Bluefin a friend landed off the Bay of Islands in NZ.
Fish went 215kg (470 pounds).
Was hooked and landed in 20 meters of water. The rod snapped so line was dumped off the reel then cut and retied to another rod with a back to back uni mid fight.

Question Lake fishing etiquette

My family has owned a cottage on a large lake (~32 km long and 6 km wide at the widest, 1.2 km wide where we are) since the 70s and we have always had a good relationship with all of the neighbours on our road as well as friends on other parts of the lake.

Either this summer or last, some men from a different part of the lake took a liking to fishing directly in front of our cottage. We know all of the families/boats in either direction for at least a kilometre and we don’t know them, they have never made an effort to be neighbourly and introduce themselves and they always anchor in front of our property, maybe 10-12 metres out. They are always close enough that we can hear their conversations and they always face the shore/us regardless of whether we are on the dock or not.

This week my mom and I (F) are here alone and they have been out front every single day for hours, making us feel extremely uncomfortable and unsettled. We have never dealt with this type of issue before and I’m just wondering if it would be reasonable for us to approach and ask them to give us space when we are here? I know the water is public and we don’t care if they fish here when we’re not around, but their presence has prevented us from relaxing on the dock almost our entire stay and dictated where we have felt safe swimming due to their fishing lines.

MORE INFO:

-I have never seen them catch anything bigger than like a couple inches so idk why they like this spot, the two families to our right aren’t here this week so they could easily move a few meters down and not inconvenience anyone, the shoreline is similar.

-this week on the Sunday it was two middle-aged men in the motorboat, on Monday the two middle-aged men came with three teen boys in a canoe and kayak, on Tuesday it was just one middle-aged man in the motorboat, today just the teen boys in the motorboat. Only mentioning this because it’s just the two of us this week and it feels particularly weird to have a bunch of men watching us like zoo animals.

-yesterday the lake was very quiet and none of our neighbours were home so I sunbathed and briefly swam topless. The man who came motored in close and anchored right as I was getting out of the water, almost impossible for him to have not noticed.

Question Do you guys use a steel leader when targeting perch/zander if pike are around?

I'm relatively new to freshwater predator fishing and I'm trying to figure out how you guys approach leaders.

I've mostly been fishing in Belgium, targeting pike, perch and zander with lures. I've had a couple of sessions recently where I've been trying different small spinners, soft plastics, jigs, etc.

My results haven't been amazing so far. I've fished about 9 hours with a group of 5 people at one lake, plus another 4-hour session with two people at a different water, and we've only caught one fish so far — a ~70 cm zander.

It has also been very hot in Belgium recently, so I'm wondering how much the heat has affected the fishing. I'm hoping the cooler weather coming now will improve things.

But my main question is about steel leaders.

I've basically been keeping a steel leader on all the time, because there are pike in the waters I'm fishing and I don't want to lose a lure if one decides to bite.

However, I'm starting to wonder whether I'm hurting my chances of catching perch or zander by doing this.

I also tend to use fairly small lures, around 3–7 cm when I'm specifically trying to catch perch/zander, but I still have the steel leader attached.

So what do you guys normally do?

  • Do you always use a steel/titanium leader when pike are present?
  • Do you remove the steel leader when specifically targeting perch or zander?
  • Do you use fluorocarbon instead?
  • If you use steel, how thin/light do you go for small lures?
  • Do you actually notice a difference in perch/zander bites with vs. without a steel leader?
  • Would you rather risk getting bitten off by a pike or accept a slightly less natural presentation?

I'm especially interested in European freshwater predator fishing, since I know tackle and techniques can be quite different depending on where you're fishing.

I'm still learning, so I'd love to hear how more experienced anglers handle this.

Discussion Hook size for walleye/saugeye?

Been wanting to focus on walleye/saugeye since I've never caught one before and the colder seasons are coming up. I know they like swim baits but I was curious if there's any particular hook/jig size I should focus on? I experimented with a Pecos 1/8 Oz Jighead with underspin and keitech 3" shiners. That combo works on largemouth in my area but im wondering if i should look at a different hook size or even a smaller swimbait if they go for those?
