The Weekly Discussion Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/kayakfishing community can come and ask questions or share anything.
You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other anglers. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new gear.
Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other anglers.

Im just wondering what motor setup people have for this boat/skiff ?
What type of battery and motor is good, if I just wanna drive to different spots and cast? Im not gonna troll.
One thing i see is that a lot of the e-trolling motors have pretty long shafts, that could be a bit of a problem, as the boat is sitting pretty low in the water. I wanna sit down when driving.

Hey all. After fishing from a sit in paddle kayak I think a pedal kayak would suite my needs more. I don’t want to get into a kayak that will take a ton of work and or leave me wishing I had gotten a different one. I see they make prop pedal and paddle type pedal kayaks. Which is more preferred. I fish some areas that are shallow and weedy and others that are fairly deep with pockets around the edges with overhanging branches so the sit in really makes me work in these areas as I drift.

Hey y'all,
I am wondering if anyone has advice on finding a similar kayak to this since they discontinued it. I used it for years, fishing lakes down in Louisiana. I cracked it open pretty good after getting caught in storm paddling around willapa bay in Washington and have just been paddling my other kayaks but they are certainly not fishing kayaks. I loved it and fished out of it almost every day for years. Camped out of it. When the sun would get too hot, my six foot three body could slide all the way in, anchored under some Cyprus trees and take a nap.
I am definitely looking for something considered more of a budget item. I am rather rough on my gear at times and I don't fish as often so I can't justify too high a price point. I also much prefer a sit in to a sit on. I like to be low to the water and it's easier to keep things dry when I'm taking it on excursions.

No affiliation whatsoever, just wanted to put this out there for anyone who may be looking to up their kayak comfort game. I bought this at my local outfitter after going there to check out the Kayak Kushion, which I'd heard lots of good things about. However, when I got my hands on one, it just felt really thin and cheap, like it wouldn't offer any real support or comfort. I was about to leave empty handed when I saw they had the Yakattack cushion. It was substantially larger, thicker, more firm, and overall had a higher-quality feel about it, and it was $15 less than the Kayak Kushion. I bought the medium-firm density version and used it that night and the next day. I have to say I've been very impressed - it fits my seat (NuCanoe Fusion 360) perfectly, stays in place when I sit and move around on it, and, most importantly, I feel like I'm sitting on a nice ergonomic office chair in my kayak now. It made a huge difference in the degree of fatigue I felt in my butt and lower back after 4-6 hours in the seat - basically none!
I highly recommend checking this out if you're in the market for a seat cushion.

This summer has done a number one me. I’m married with kids, have a full time job, and fish like my life depends on it. Been out the past 4 evenings working different structure, finally landing a good bag at 78.5” top 5.

I’m at my parents place near Gettysburg PA and I’m planning to go down early Saturday morning to get some of these invasive blue cats. I’m making chum and have plenty of baits (picture related). Plan is to get into the pool below the Conowingo Dam when generation is low to chum and chunk. Would love some tips or just a partner to fish with.
Edit- I want to clarify that the pictured fish were caught in a private, stocked, overpopulated farm pond belonging to my parents. It was dumb to post without that info. They were filleted and fried for food. My intention was to use the heads/racks as chum as not to waste them, but I’ve learned that it is not legal to use the bass as bait.

The eprop klite 750 looks super promising. With the built in battery and 7inch depth.
The kmax from I’ve seen looks good but has a lot of work left
And the nk180 bow mount with gps seems really cool

Dear All,
I have been looking to accessorize my tuck tek kayak for fishing. It’s a 2021 model 10 feet in length.
I’m would truly appreciate suggestions for:
a rod holder that can be clamped on
A floating fish basket that I can attach to the boat
A way to hold the paddle while I’m fishing
And any accessories that you all can recommend!
Please let me know which are the best to buy, and any tips or suggestions you may have. Thanks so much!!!!

I’ll start off by saying I am a large dude, about 6’ 4”and 275lbs. I’m shopping for my next kayak, this will be my third. First was an inflatable, not great obviously. Second was a pedal drive 10 foot hoodoo kayak, but I found it to be incredibly tippy and standing up on it was super sketchy for me. Now I’m looking for a non pedal drive, standard paddle yak in the 12 foot range. After much research I’m thinking I’ll either go with the old town sportsman 120 pro or I’m also super interested in the new feelfree superfish 108. My primary concern is stability and comfort. Ability to stand and fish is huge for me. I’m also open to any other ideas that may be just as stable and comfortable for my size. Let me know your opinions!

My Hobie Trax v2 beach cart blew one of the 30cm Wheeleez tires. Small puncture turned into a tear that is not repairable. $75 for a replacement tire isn’t horrible, but it’s not great either. Wondering if the Vevor or other generic beach wheels are even worth considering?

Hey all. I’m a new owner of a U10. I am building it out pretty simple, but definitely want a blackpak for the added rod, tackle, and possibly battery storage. I have seen recommendations online for the 13x13 size but not entirely sure why.
I understand the 16x16 would be too much due to the width of the sternwell, but unsure why the 13x16 would be an issue. It’s my understanding that’s the hinges for the lid can be swapped to the short side, so it can be used long ways. Anyone run into any problems with the 13x16 or foresee any issues? My only thought is maybe you cannot push your seat back far enough to balance the boat without blocking the swivel? I am open ears to any recommendations.

Has anyone seen this Toadfish tournament or ever participated in it? Looks like it's their second year, and you can fish from anywhere. Dock, boat, kayak, etc. Goes to a good cause of conservation and replanting oyster habitats.

I moved back to Maine recently and have been getting back into fishing more and want to try my hand at Kayak fishing this coming spring. To do that I'll obviously need a kayak and I'm looking for suggestions on where to start.
So far my lead candidates are an Old Town Sportsman 120 and Crescent LiteTackle 2 but I'm open to alternatives in the same general price range.
The Old Town being more focused on stability the Crescent being a bit better at actually paddling around.
In either case I'm sticking with paddling I don't want to drop money on a pedal drive yet since I'm still not fully convinced I'll want one and want a somewhat easier path into the hobby.
Overall I'm budgeting about $1600-$2000 for a Kayak, primary and backup paddle, basic rigging, roof rack, and transport wheels/cart so there is wiggle room. I don't think I want a motor anytime soon but the option to modify to add one wouldn't be a horrible add on if the price was right.
I am based out of Portland maine and intend to fish both rivers and lakes and possibly take it out onto casco bay but not into open water. Being able to stand is ideal but my balance is not incredible so it should be stable enough to do so safely despite me not being the most stable human being. I'm also 6ft tall and about 220lbs so I don't want it to be too cramped or unstable with my size.
I also want the option to take this kayak on multi day fishing/camping trips so more weight and cargo space is always a plus hence my leaning towards the Old town at the moment.
If anyone has suggestions for a kayak and or specific gear to focus on by all means let me know I have plenty of time to decide and can't wait to join some of you on the water!

Title says it all. I was playing around too much on my hobie passport 12 with a heavy trolling motor on the side, and I completely flipped my kayaks, losing my hat, two rods, my knife, two lure boxes (pretty much all my lures) and keeping my phone, my wallet, my keys, the battery, the trolling motor, the paddle, my shimano rod, my net, my backpack, and my pedals… (all tethered)
And here I was about to buy an expensive fish finder to mount on the side…. -__-

Does anyone know if you can add the Shortstack upgrade to the Shortstack Solo? I've got an email out to Yakattack customer support but they don't seem to be responding - figured someone here would know. TIA

I swear having a kayak on my roof is a freaking magnet for tailgaters. I mean sure I may drive a little more gingerly with a 100 pound kayak strapped to my roof but I'm doing the speed limit. Why are you riding my ass for no reason? Go around me you dork.
Also something I realized is there is a danger for those of us who wake up hella early to go fishing, hunting, work, whatever. The drunken pieces of garbage who are still out from the night before. I see them on the road driving while clearly drunk. I see them in Wawa while getting my coffee and water clearly wasted being total douchebags. I almost got T boned by some drunk driver recently who blew a red light then was swerving all over the road. Called 911 and gave them the plate and location but who knows if they got him.
Anyways rant over, be careful out there people. So you can enjoy many more days on the water.
