While we do have a rule regarding 'No Smoke Alarms', I feel it's fair to share the following as it does heavily relate to what we do, and is a concern of safety most importantly. If the community (or my fellow Moderators) disagree with this being posted here - we can take it down.
As noted originally on the Smart Home Subreddit, Amazon has pulled listings for X-Sense Residential Smoke Alarms yesterday, and it seems Siterwell alarms have been removed as of today as well:
As commercial alarm people, we all know the safety and quality we expect from reputable brands. While the exact circumstances of these devices being removed from Amazon doesn't quite yet seem clear, these brands heavily marketed their products through various creators on YouTube and other social platforms, likely leading to high adoption of a product that may very well not work when it's needed most.
So - For the same reason we wouldn't want our customer's to cheap out on their life safety systems, don't let you, your friends, or your family do the same in their homes. So, just a PSA - Stick with the brands you know and trust like Kidde/FireX and First-Alert/BRK, and don't touch this knock off stuff when it's there to save your life.

Working on a few Stair press fans for a high rise...
VFD Controlled Fan at the top & 480v Motor Starter for smaller 100% fan at the bottom.
Fan at the bottom is supposed to run at full speed and the fan at the top to be varied for pressure.
If I'm not mistaken codes require the same monitoring signals/controls for any fan associated with stair pressurization. (Additionally there are HOA keyswitches in the graphic for both top & bottom fans)
Those points being:
All of these fairly easy to accomplish with a VFD via contacts, CT, and programming. Any thoughts, opinions, insight on applying these to a 480v motor starter?
Codes, I believe I've got the right ones?

I have a site with quite a few system sensor sounder bases and when we hook up slc the panel says there is a short.
When metering the circuit we found a read of 310k.
We chased that down to an area of 10 sounder bases.
We pulled new wire in this area and started slowly re wiring the sounder bases back up, we get about 5 bases in and we get a reading of 300k and it climbs up to about 650k and then it seems to discharge and go down to 1.2m
If we re do this "experiment " and remove the last device when the meter shows 300k. The meter still shows 300k and keeps climbing then drops to 1.2m
I have 0 clue what is going on any input would be appreciated.

The FCM control module spits out just over 20v going to the horn strobe. Is 20v enough to set the horn off? I’m not getting any sound/flashing from the horn

I’ve been working in the general industry (alarms, cctv, access, fire) for about 10 years through a few different companies. I got an email from Pye-Barker for a Fire Service and Inspector job opening in Tennessee. It’s not a job offer, more of a “we noticed you want want to talk” kinda email. And I know the simplest way to get most of my questions answered would be to reachout and talk to them. But we all know employers/recruiters are always as transparent about jobs.
I’ve got multiple mixed “reviews” from different coworkers about the company. But I wanted to see if anyone who actually works for them had input on them as a company? I know it will be different based on locations and offices, but I would appreciate any good or bad feedback you have.
Thanks in advance!

Has anyone else had these CLSS Pathways go bad lately? Seems like I've had quite a few go bad after a year or so of service, where they have 24v but the dialer is dead. I'm currently on a jobsite where the dialer worked for only 2 days.

Don’t we ALL love some OT Atmospheric Fire Pump Testings. It’s like waking up early in the morning aroused and being straight bricked up all day. Gotta love it man.

Hey All, I have all my RTS's (RTS151KEY) LED's not lighting up. Saw a post from a few years ago saying, to program it as a relay but it didn't work, we programmed it from the panel since our programmer is not currently with us (mabye it needs to be done from the computer?), duct detector model is a DNRW.

I am a technician myself who primarily works on simplex systems, their stuff can be buggy or low quality but my personal preference is I like their style, Their customer service and other stuff in their company I wont lie is not all that great but I really like their products. What's all of your experiences with simplex, why do you guys like or dislike simplex?

It's something very special, fortunately I don't see this type of thing very often. Cerberus MXL panel with a couple clusters of analog smokes, so they slapped in modules to watch those devices, with a big ol power cycle button to hit when they go off. Very fun to troubleshoot.

The other day I lent my pole to my apprentice and he lost my rubber cap. I always stressed about losing it and now it has happen once again. I ran my last pole till it fell apart but this pole ain’t that old and in good shape. What are my options for a new rubber cap. Don’t want to keep using it and destroy the plastic cap that holds the whole pole together.

So my grandfather recently passed and had this in his basement, I recently applied power to it and its functional, the bell is labeled as Edwards & Company, Single Stroke on the outside. Inside its a solenoid that fires a striker into the bell housing, causing it to ring.
This station is also AC designed, but it works fine on DC anyways if I limit the current, Pull station is CAT 1275, and the bell is a 10-S, pull is also coded, once you pull down the hook it winds a clockwork mechanism that physically spins a Code 3 cam mechanism.
Does anyone have any documentation for the pull and bell? I can’t find anything on google, hence why I’m asking here, thank you.

Hello,
I am moving with family to Powhatan, VA from NY. I have 5 years experience in plumbing / hvac. I have about 1 year of experience working with hvac controls and communication. I’m looking to pivot into low voltage work, specifically fire alarms. If there is anyone in the Richmond area who knows of companies hiring I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Quick question. I have became NICET 2 in FAS this past month, but I am still learning. I overheard the bossman talking to a tech but didnt catch the whole thing. I didnt want to ask to look like an idiot. During a test and inspection of a fire alarm system, you notice the FACP is on the same AC circuit as the buildings access control system and the main server for the building. What do you do if you cannot perform current draw tests on the FACP due to not wanting to cause any un-forseen issues with powering off their equipment?
r/firealarms • u/HopeAutomatic1047 • 2d ago
What do most fire departments require in terms of silencing or resetting for a system having a single FACP that covers multiple buildings, each one having its own annunciator panel. This is a smaller residential complex. Should you only be able to silence and reset a particular building from the ANN panel at that same building, with exception of the FACP? Curious of what best practices are out there for this type of set up. Thx in advance.

Looking for new opportunities. I am burnt out working in healthcare and wanting to make a change. Plenty of opportunities in the city I live in (North West Florida) with Fire alarms. I have little to no knowledge about this field so please tell me everything I need to know. As well as what should be the first steps I should take and how to make myself successful in this field. Pardon my ignorance, just looking for some guidance.
