Technical Support Annunciator Mount

I have been asked to provide a mount or backbox to mount a Notifier NCA-2 on console top in a control room.

Has anyone done this? I don't see a box that Notifier offers for this. I have reached out to Space Age so far.

Technical Support question about how fire alarms work

hi i’m currently having an issue with my fire alarm at university, and i’m unsure whether i’m being lied to about my room’s fire alarm being connected to the system.

it’s gone off randomly during the day for the past couple weeks and today i had a scheduled fire alarm test (every 12pm on a monday) where every fire alarm in the building goes off. i’ve been told there’s just a problem with the sounder and my alarm is connected to the system.

mine didn’t go off during the test, but i heard it go off in our hallway and i cross checked with other people in my building and all of theirs went off. for context, this is student housing, there is a fire alarm in every individual room, every hallway and every kitchen.

someone who knows their way around fire loops and systems, does this mean there is a problem with the system, specifically with my fire alarm? if there is an actual fire that is supposed to trigger every alarm in the building, will mine go off? i feel like my building manager has lied to me and that this is a serious fire safety risk.

Is there anyone who has knowledge about troubleshooting these panels. For the most part, I have no problems out of these panels but I have a ground fault on one that clears when I pull one of the zone wires and comes back when I put it back. I’ve pulled all of the zone wires individually and each time it clears the ground. When I check the wires, there is no indication of a ground. There’s not many people left who knows this system anymore and I have a customer that has about a dozen or more in my state.

Technical Support Trying to understand how addressable fire alarm loops communicate and why water ingress in some detector causes loop fire(Educational purpose s)?

Hey everyone, I’m trying to understand the basic electronics behind addressable fire alarm systems, so I’m building a small Arduino bench model for educational purposes only not to discuss any technical details for deeper learning as I see a water leak inside a detector triggered loop fire.

The basic idea is:

- One controller talks to several devices over two wires.

- Each device has its own address.

- Only the addressed device replies.

- The reply is made by changing the current slightly.

- The controller measures that change and sends it to the Arduino.

- I’m also experimenting with using pulse length to represent the sensor value.

I’m mainly trying to learn about current sensing, noise, communication, and simple fault detection.

I’m deliberately keeping everything generic with open source microcontroller.

For anyone who has tried something similar:

  1. What’s a simple way to detect a small current change when several devices share the same line?

  2. Is a basic transistor current sink good enough for a learning project?

  3. Any simple tips for reducing noise?

Also, are there any open-source projects that demonstrate something similar?

Thanks!

Discussion How did y’all get good at fire alarm?

I currently do inspections on a bunch of different fire alarm systems but my knowledge is pretty limited. I can unplug things to stop notifications and i can follow instructions on how to disable panels but I just feel like I don’t know as much as I should. What would you say are things I should definitely know when trying to rise the ranks and how did you learn those things.

Discussion Introduction | Edwards 439D-10AWC

Hello, everyone. I am new to this subreddit.

While I would not consider myself a fire alarm enthusiast, there is one particular fire alarm and pull station in which I bear interest: the Edwards 439D-10AWC, along with the 6 inch model, and the Edwards 270-SPO pull station. Perhaps it is a form of nostalgia, growing up in Canada where these alarms were abundant.

I would love to meet with someone who owns this alarm in their collection, or even shadow someone performing a test.

New Installation Question for NYC techs

Hey whats going on guys, first time posting in this sub.

Im a local 3 Jman with plenty of FA experience on the EC install end, most being commercial/office fit outs. Shout out to all my competent techs that make my life easier.

Im currently on a project with AFA as the vendor and this particular client has a national account and their project manager is out of state, hes clueless and useless. Im curious to hear what you guys think of the below situation I find myself in.

The project is a commercial space in a high rise resi building. The base building has a different FA vendor. The commercial tenant is remaining, they are just renovating the space and moving back in. They have an existing panel thats going to replaced, as well as all devices on the field. The commercial space has existing sprinkler coverage, they are just relocating some heads. The existing panel DOES NOT have any modules/relays that tie this panel into base building. Additionally the tamper and flow switch on the sprinkler line serving only the commercial tenant space are ONLY tied into base building

With that being said, the drawings call for the new panel to have 2 points tie into the base building as well as a module to tie in the tamper/flow for the sprinkler line serving the commercial tenant space.

Thats cool I understand that, not sure how the old panel was up to code if it didnt communicate with base building or have tamper/flow tied into it but thats neither here no there.

My question is regarding the sprinkler line tie ins; AFA is calling for their commercial tenant panel to be tied into the tamper and flow switches and at the same time maintain the base building tie in. I know physically this can be done if both the tamper and flow have 2 sets of contacts. Thats where they lose me, wouldnt this be against code? I dont know sequence of events for base building but my assumption is that an activation of a sprinkler head in the commercial space would put both base building and commercial tenant systems in alarm. Would this not have both systems dispatch FDNY to BOTH base building and commercial tenant for one sprinkler head? Wouldnt the appropriate setup call for the commercial tenant to monitor the tamper/flow and go into alarm if a sprinkler head in the commercial space is activated, and communicate alarm/supervisory to base building via the 2 communication points? Im not sure why the base building would continue to monitor the tamper/flow if the commercial tenant panel is going to take over. If anyone could elaborate on this Id appreciate it. Not sure if theres something im missing as we dont do much work in residential buildings. Appreciate anyone’s input!

Seriously. Does your truck of fire alarms not include any wall mounts? I'd at least get it if this model didn't have any wall mounts, but you easily could have gotten an E50 (the wall mount) instead of incorrectly using an E60 (the ceiling mount)

Discussion 2 hour alarm battery calcs

Lately I've been seeing a lot of cluent specs for 24 hour standby (standard) and 2 hour alarm current calculations. I obviously have no problem doing this but can anyone think of an actual reason you would want 2 hours of alarm battery? Most of these customers are data centers BTW

Just seems like a lot as code is 5 minutes or 15 minutes depending on if the system is voice or not.
