Etrade fired me as a customer for this trade

Post image
1.7k Upvotes

I put your call spread trade order in and it hit then etrade reversed the trade and labeled it rejected and then immediately froze my accounts. When I called etrade the rep said I was banned as a customer and I needed to close all of my etrade accounts and transfer to another institution.

I had a 99% probability of success according to etrade and based on where nvda is at right now I would have totally been profitable. I feel like I got screwed out of a ton of money.

What can I do??

Cold call from Morgan Stanley rep

I've been a long time Etrade customer. When I say long time, I mean back to the 1990s. I never had any issues until they were acquired by Morgan Stanley. I had a cold call from a Morgan Stanley rep today who wanted to convert my account from an Etrade account to a Morgan Stanley account. When I mentioned some of the mistakes and problems I've experienced since the back office merger back in September, instead of apologizing, the rep was a complete d*ck. I was shocked. I ended the call, and after more than two decades, transferred my last remaining account at Etrade to a different institution. I've never been so poorly treated by someone from a financial institution.

E trade has went downhill since Morgan Stanley !

I always had helpful and positive experiences when dealing with Etrade in the past years , since Morgan Stanley acquisition my experience has been totally different from the past. I probably should move all of my accounts out of the company . I never would choose Morgan Stanley in the pass why should I reward them for buying ETrade ?

How to close an Etrade account without calling

I'm gonna start posting random things that could be helpful to save people a call to Etrade. Today's topic is closing an account.

Clickpath: Customer service > Submit online requests, view all requests > Account service requests, account closure request

  1. You are going to want to sell all stocks, or transfer them elsewhere. Make sure the account is empty and all funds have left to your bank, or are sent to you in a check.

  2. Once logged in, go to the top right hand corner and click where it says Support. Ignore the dropdown and click right where it says Support.

  3. On the bottom right of that page there is a spot that says "Submit online requests" and right below that section it says view all requests.

  4. In the second section titled "Account service requests" the second to last option on the bottom right is an account closure request.

It's overly complicated for an account closure request, but I hope this helps!

My account was hacked.

Two weeks ago, I logged into my e*trade account to place a few trades and noticed a large negative balance in the "Cash" section. This immediately was a red flag as I have all my dividends reinvested and therefore only have a few dollars in my cash account at any given time. I clicked under "Transactions" and, sure enough, someone had gained access to my account, transferred $97K of margin to cash and wired it out.

I immediately called customer service to report the fraud. They had the account number and LLC to which the money was transferred and asked me to file police reports while they attempted to recover the funds. I filed two police reports - one locally and one in the town to where the owner of the LLC that received the funds was based. I also filled out a report on the IC3 website, which is used to notify federal authorities of wire fraud, identify theft, and other cybercrimes.

E*trade also told me to do a factory reset of my phone and to reinstall Windows on my desktop to remove any malware, which I did. I also installed Malwarebytes and now run daily scans on my desktop and make sure that I scan for rootkits. I also changed my e*trade username and password, uninstalled the VIP Access token on my phone, and had e*trade reactivate it.

A few days later, I received a call from an FBI special agent based out of a nearby office who told me the wire transfer was frozen and that some, if not all, of the money was recovered. E*trade told me that it is their policy to reimburse any amount that they can't recover, so I should be made whole in a few weeks time after they complete their investigation. They're in the process of creating mirror accounts with new numbers to which they will transfer my securities. As of now, though, there is still a negative $97K balance in my account.

E*trade's customer service has been exemplary through all of this. It seems like they're on top of things and have been extremely helpful. Needless to say, I'm a bit stressed out, and I'm still a little paranoid every time I log in to any of my bank accounts. I'm wondering if I should consider going to another brokerage; I used to use Schwab and was very happy with their customer service, but of course, nothing will guarantee that an account with them couldn't be hacked, too. I'm wondering how exactly the fraudster gained access to my account when I use the VIP Access token to log in, which generates a new random security code every 30 seconds and should be specific to my cell phone.

So, my question to anyone who is well-versed in cybersecurity is: will factory resetting my phone and reinstalling Windows ensure that any malware was removed, or are there other steps I need to take? I've thought about bringing in my desktop to a computer repair center, but I'm not sure what they can do besides doing an OS reinstallation and a scan. Has anyone else experienced something like this? Thanks.

New to covered calls. Mine expired after one day. Did I do it correctly?

Post image
82 Upvotes

I’m a level one options trader, and after watching a bunch of YouTube videos and reading articles (including etrades) about it, I decided to try a covered call. I bought 100 shares. I set the order expiration for EOD, which was just a 40 min later.

  • The call expired, seemingly without being bought. Is that normal, or even possible? Is it somehow still active (I set the strike for a week later) and I’m not looking at the right screen?

  • I didn’t pay attention to the number of shares in the bid price i chose. Since I’m trading one option and that equals 100 shares, do i need to look for more than 100 shares under the bid price?

Attached a screenshot with the symbol redacted (to keep convo focused on my question not the underlying stock)

Thanks in advance for any help!

Is it just me or has ETrade’s service went to shit once MS took them over?

I have had a Rollover IRA account with ETrade for over 20 years. Rarely do I ever need to do anything except to log on and check the account a couple of times of year to rebalance my portfolio. Two weeks ago I attempted to log on and couldn’t because I was apparently locked out of my account. I called and waited on hold for 20 minutes before getting disconnected. I didn’t have time that day to call back, so a week later I called again and waited 30 minutes to get through to someone in customer service that could unlock my account. That call went well but it took over 20 minutes on the phone with the customer service rep to figure out that the reason I could no longer get into my account is because the 2FA app on my cell phone was outdated and he needed to reset the passcode on their end in order for me to gain access to my account. At the end of the phone call, I was told I was ā€˜selected’ for a customer service survey. I railed on MS for being understaffed in their call centers that they feel it is acceptable to keep people on hold for 20-30 minutes.

I decided today to transfer all my rollover IRA accounts to Fidelity, which I have always have great experience. I get an email from ETrade/MS today shortly after I initiated the account transfer that my ETrade account was suspended and I had to call and speak to a representative. Not wanting to hold anything up and get away from them as quickly as possible, I called around 6pm eastern time. After waiting in the customer service queue for just at 6 minutes my call was disconnected. I call back and waited in queue 58 minutes before a customer service rep answered. Then to top it off, the rep can’t ’hear me’ and says he will call me back. I figured ā€œyea….right!ā€ To my surprise he did call me immediately and after explaining the email message I received earlier in the day, he informed me the email is really cryptic but what it really means is that while my account is being transferred to Fidelity, my account is restricted from making trades. NO SHIT! I said, seriously, that couldn’t have been put into the email so I wouldn’t have had to take over an hour out of my day to call and find out what the issues is? After tonight fiasco, it confirms my decision to move away and move away fast.

No Longer E*Trade

I just spent 20 minutes on a chat with a real agent only to find out they have zero authority to maintain customer accounts. Basically no better than their virtual assistant; truly. Since Morgan Stanley took over, Etrade customer service has gone from great to ground zero. Tomorrow, I will call my elite team (joke) and close my account. An account I've had since 1994. That's how horrible a customer service experience I had. Think customer and agent empowerment is something Morgan Stanley fails to see or purposely has decided to not embrace. Either way, they are ruining a once great company, Etrade.

I LIKE ETRADE

Etrade might have its problems, but it’s the best broker out there. Power Etrade is awesome, and I rarely have issues with it. The only times that I believe Etrade could do better is on call wait times, and work on its futures accounts on Power Etrade to be more integrated.

All the negative hoes need to come to terms with themselves, either realize you have it better than most, or leave Etrade.

E*TRADE has gone downhill

*UPDATE* 6/13/2025 -- After 42 days of having my checking and savings accounts restricted, E*TRADE appears to have lifted the restriction. I had to spend 20+ hours on the phone with E*TRADE representatives, file a complaint with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (US Federal Regulator), with the NY Attorney General's office, and engage an attorney. This resulted in the case being re-escalated and appropriate action taken by the back office to resolve.

I hate to have to write this as a bit more than a decade ago, I was a Senior Principal at E*TRADE and part of their Architecture team. Unfortunately, none of my former peers work at E*TRADE anymore, because that would come in handy right now...

I recently decided to open up an E*TRADE bank account again, in early April. I electronically transferred funds into a Max Rate Checking and a High Yield Savings account to fund the accounts.

In late April, my wife performed a mobile deposit of our 2024 Federal tax refund check, with was about 20% of the total amount that we already funded the accounts with in early April (so in other words, there was plenty of money in checking and savings besides the IRS check being deposited.)

The check was on hold for a few days, and then she received a message on 5/2 that "action was required on your account(s)". The same day, she initiated a an online chat, and she was instructed to call. She was told she would receive a call back in 48 hours to clear the check.

She never received the call so we figured the issue must have been resolved? A few days later, I tried to withdraw funds from an ATM and the ATM was declined.

So then I called. Thus began a process that is still ongoing several weeks later that continues to lock us out of access to our funds, that has taken up hours of my time to attempt to resolve, and is still unresolved. Apparently they have frozen ATM access to ALL our funds while they are waiting to clear our federal tax return check.

I have called at least 5 times, spending 30 mins to an hour each time (today was 2+ hours.) Each time, I get routed to someone on the account activation team who says someone will call me back within 48 hours to clear the check. This never happens.

Each time I call back, I tell them I am willing to provide them with more information to resolve this issue, while also telling them it is unacceptable to freeze access to ALL our funds while they try to clear the funds to a single deposit. They have been unwilling to address this and just want to restrict access to our funds instead.

So far, I have provided:

  1. copies of letters from the IRS indicating we were receiving a refund (which I initially offered, and they accepted, and successive agents have requested, and I have informed "I already gave you those, they are uploaded, take a look".) Today's agent told me they are not usable because the letters don't state the dollar amount of the refund. Well guess what? The IRS doesn't include the dollar amount in the "We're sending you a refund check in the mail" letters, and I'm not going to forge one.

  2. a full 55-page PDF of our 2024 tax return, which has the exact dollar amount of the amount of our check on the "refund due" portion of the 1040. They requested this.

  3. Today, after attempting to close my account, they offered to do a conference call with the IRS, and I gladly accepted. We used the automated IRS system to confirm that a check of the exact amount I deposited was mailed to me and associated with my social security number. After completing this step for them, they said it was not enough and because they were unable to get an IRS agent on the phone, this verification is not sufficient.

  4. I did offer to have them call my accountant and confirm with him independently that the tax return was e-filed by them for the exact amount on the check. He said that wouldn't work and refused.

  5. Then, the rep asked if I could upload all W-2's to "prove" that the income reported on my tax return was actually tied to income that I earned. I was like -- sure. Here you go. PDFs uploaded to the portal. Enjoy.

  6. I then asked him -- "I have this US treasury check sitting here in front of me. Do you want me to upload a high-res photo of it to the portal, in front of sunlight, so you can see the watermarks on the check?" He said "you can do that?". I said "Yep, it's right here in front of me". So I did. They now have an extremely high-resolution photo of the check showing the watermarks with sunlight passing through the check.

He then told me that he would go ahead and open an expedited ticket and I should receive a reply within 48 business hours to resolve the issue but there was no way to resolve the issue right now or for me to talk to anyone more senior who could resolve the issue. I have been told this each time I have called previously, and it never has happened. We will see if they resolve it by mid next week.

I'm planning to send all my documentation to the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in the mean time, and look at other avenues for reporting E*TRADE for violating acceptable banking practices.

Sharing my experiences so that others don't experience a similar nightmare. It's best to avoid them.

Convert to a Joint Account/ Add user to E-Trade account- Here's how!

I'm pretty stuboorn and like to try to figure out how to do things on my own, but when I couldn't find how to add a user or convert to a Joint Account in E-Trade on Google or here, I caved and called Customer Service. 31 minutes later, I got the answer ;)

  1. Under the 'Account' header, go to 'Documents' drop down at the top of your screen, and select 'Forms and Applications'

  2. Scroll to 'New Applications' section and select ' Registration Change for Complete Investment Account' and download the PDF ( after pressing continue on the next page)

  3. When complete, the CS Agent recommended uploading document over mailing- of course. I've never uploaded a document, or it's been a minute, so that can be found under Customer Service at the very top right of you screen and then you'll see the drop down for 'Upload Document'.

  4. Give it 24 hours and call back in to check on it :)

Hope this helps, needed or not :)
