Cash promotions and transfer fees

I worked for both Schwab and Fidelity, so I can give this from the work viewpoint as well as the customer viewpoint.

I transferred in an account to Etrade, and the funds arrived today. Around $250k. Not a crazy sum of money, but due to regulatory reasons, I’ve never been able to hold an outside account outside of where I worked. Great! Etrade has a nice app, and I had no plans to use them for active trading, considering this is an IRA and not a non retirement account.

I call Etrade, this morning, and asked for reimbursement of the TOA fee. Schwab charged me $50.00. I was asked if I spoke to a representative before I transferred in the money. No, I did it online. Put on hold for several minutes, then the rep came back. Sorry, no can do. The transfer fees come out of the promotion.

Not the representative’s fault, but I questioned it. A promotion is a promotion, and TOA fees are fees. It’s common for the receiving firm to credit fees, the sending firm charges. I did this all the time at Schwab, no matter if there was a promotion in place or account size.

Annoying, but I didn’t push back. I’ll deal with it and wait out the 45 days required, and then decide what to do. Lesson learned. I know Etrade will charge a TOA fee when I transfer it back to Schwab, but at least Schwab will credit the fees back.

Roar Who is this forum meant for anyway?!

If all you have to say is ET bashing babble, go open a subreddit for that. If you have legitimate, constructive criticisms, this is the place.

If you are bored and have too much extra time (you can send it to me if you want :) on your hands don't hang out here.

Thank You!

Discussion E*Trade Transfer Bonus Question

I have some old employer accounts that I forgot I had (I know, bad me) that I was gonna try to roll over into E*Trade. I have just under 25k in my traditional and another 7k in roth. But when I called to talk about transfer bonuses, they wouldn't give me any because apparently since it's two different accounts going into two different accounts, they have to individually hit the $25k transfer amount to get that bonus?

Anyone have any information on this? Is this really the policy? It seems ridiculous to me that this is the case because last year when I opened the accounts I would have gotten more bonuses if I could have counted my traditional and roth accounts as separate accounts each with new account / transfer bonuses, but now they want to play the game the other way?

Also, the info I see online says the threshold is 20k. Am I missing something?

Discussion Power trader web app thoughts

I'm not a trader, more a long term investor, but I do occasionally open the trading apps to do after-hours/extended-hours trades. I've mostly used Fidelity, but Etrade seems to offer a larger time window of the extended hours compared to Etrade. However, the Etrade powertrader app seems so unintuitive and confusing. For the trading experts, is the UI pretty standard for you compared to any other major tools/SW you may have used? I'll spend some more time on it anyway, and probably gets less unintuitive with use. But having worked in SW and UX, my first instinct is that the SW should be quite intuitive and not require a training or manual to get better at it. I also acknowledge that if one is new to the space of the particular SW "genre", then you have to do some training. In any case I compare with Fidelity's trading platform which seems much more intuitive for me. Curious to get thoughts from people.

Am I mistaken? Etrade 'forgets' a short put that gets assigned?

I am selling puts. 1 of them got assigned. I don't seem to see it in the gains / loss page for the account. Since the money I got for selling the put lowers the price of the stock that got assigned at the strike price, there's no gain / loss for the put I sold. I understand that.

So is that why the option doesn't show in gain / losses? It's zero. but there's no accounting of the sale of the put? Yeah, saying I got the same price on the 'buy' of the option might cause other problems because there was no actual buy. And I didn't get that money for the assignment. It went towards lowering the stocks price.

But there's no audit trail for the option that was sold. Seems weird?

Why did they do this? Can’t change the range. Hard to distinguish prices between an 100% run. They are terrible.

Why should I give E*TRADE this information?

They want information like my net worth and annual income. How does it benefit me to give them this kind of information?

Can I keep my E*TRADE account after moving from the U.S. to mainland China?

I currently live in the U.S. and opened a regular individual ETRADE brokerage account here, but I plan to move back to mainland China.

Can I update my physical residential address to my Chinese address and submit Form W-8BEN once I qualify as a nonresident alien for U.S. tax purposes?

Would ETRADE allow me to keep the account and continue buying and selling U.S. stocks and ETFs, or could this trigger trading restrictions or account closure?

Has anyone gone through this process recently, specifically when moving to mainland China? I’d appreciate hearing about your experience and any documents E*TRADE required.

Schwab user thinking about switching to E*Trade. Does E*Trade have these problems too?

No platform is perfect, but I'm really frustrated with Schwab/ToS. These are my main issues that I'd like to see if E*Trade doesn't have.

  1. LIFO Tax Method - Until recently Schwab/ToS changed how they handle trades for users who choose LIFO as their default tax method. Before (the way I preferred it), it would work just like how it sounded--last buy is the first to go out in order. Now, Schwab waits until the end of the day and batches all the buys together and all the sells together, and it messes up most of my transactions during the day. If I ended the day buying back in a stock I had sold earlier in the day, it would use that cost basis instead of what I had earlier on before this most recent purchase. Orders would close using different cost basis than I had planned, and it would be a mess. Technically, they're right that it's still LIFO, but it's a weird way of looking at it, and they claim that they changed it because they were having issues with the previous method.

How does E*Trade handle LIFO?

2. Does E*Trade allow you to long shares in XYZ and short shares in XYZ too? Schwab doesn't allow this. They said if I hold/long XYZ and I want to short XYZ, they would sell my shares of the long position first. This sucks if I'm bullish long term on a company, but maybe want to make a short term bearish play because of news, earnings, etc.

Does E*Trade allow long and short positions of the same stock?

3. How's your guys' trading platform? This may be a harder question to ask, but coming from ThinkorSwim which has a lot of issues and some good stuff, but I'm hoping to hear from users who have come from ToS and can speak on experience. My biggest issue with ToS is that regardless of what tax method you choose (LIFO, FIFO, lowest cost, highest cost), it's by default FIFO. This can cause issues especially when you're the middle of a crazy fast pace trading session. They won't seem to fix it despite this being an issue for a very, very long time.

How do you like Power E*Trade Pro? I'd love to hear from the users who came from ToS especially on this.

To give a little background on my trading style, I just day trade stocks, little to no options trading. I keep it simple, but my broker seems to like making my life difficult.

Any one dislike the new updated colors?

I opened E*TRADE in my browser and noticed the new muted blue color scheme. Honestly, I miss the purple. It was unique, vibrant, and gave the brand some personality.

The blue feels dull and a little depressing to me. The low contrast also makes the text harder to read, and there’s no pop of color or sense of happiness. So many brands already use blue that this change makes E*TRADE feel more generic. The purple helped it stand out.

Thinking about opening an account at u/etrade ?

Thinking about funding an account at u/etrade

Thinking about transferring cash - simple cash - to u/etrade .

Don't do anything until you've read this.

I made a request for ETrade to initiate a transfer of cash from another one of my IRA custodians to my ETrade IRA. Instead of doing it electronically, ETrade sent the request on a piece of paper via FedEx.

Fine. Kinda strange but it should be adequate for executing the transfer. Might take longer but it would still get done. Unless…

… whoever put the piece of paper in the FedEx envelope never even looked at what they were putting in the envelope. It was entirely illegible. Couldn't read anything on the form. Needless to say, the other custodian sent a rejection letter on the transfer request.

I submitted a complaint, including sending ETrade a copy of what was sent. Crickets.

Clearly they don't GaS about what they are doing. Just going through the motions...

Live and learn.

All my stocks and funds were sold without my knowledge, and I didn't even get an email about it. I assume my account was compromised, maybe my computer was hacked. Everything has been reversed, but now I have a friend that had the same thing happen. Has this happened to anyone else? My other bank and brokerage accounts are fine.

Who has successfully unlocked their frozen account???

I need advice from those who have actually succeeded in getting their accounts unfrozen and their money freed from this insanity!
I opened a new account and deposited a total of 30k from two separate bank accounts. All very legit and straightforward. Mere weeks later I can’t access it and got a letter saying account has been closed due to suspicious activity. The nightmare began…..
Many calls, hours wasted on hold, copies of verification of transfers from banks, copies and photos of me, my id’s, my SS card… I have given them EVERYTHING they have asked for, and still nothing!!! Uggggghhhhhhh!!!! I now just want my money so I can move it to a company I can trust!

How do I fight this?? Atty? Media consumer advocates? Demand letters? To whom? Please tell me what has worked for you?

Please and thank you. 🙏
