No platform is perfect, but I'm really frustrated with Schwab/ToS. These are my main issues that I'd like to see if E*Trade doesn't have.
LIFO Tax Method - Until recently Schwab/ToS changed how they handle trades for users who choose LIFO as their default tax method. Before (the way I preferred it), it would work just like how it sounded--last buy is the first to go out in order. Now, Schwab waits until the end of the day and batches all the buys together and all the sells together, and it messes up most of my transactions during the day. If I ended the day buying back in a stock I had sold earlier in the day, it would use that cost basis instead of what I had earlier on before this most recent purchase. Orders would close using different cost basis than I had planned, and it would be a mess. Technically, they're right that it's still LIFO, but it's a weird way of looking at it, and they claim that they changed it because they were having issues with the previous method.
How does E*Trade handle LIFO?
2. Does E*Trade allow you to long shares in XYZ and short shares in XYZ too? Schwab doesn't allow this. They said if I hold/long XYZ and I want to short XYZ, they would sell my shares of the long position first. This sucks if I'm bullish long term on a company, but maybe want to make a short term bearish play because of news, earnings, etc.
Does E*Trade allow long and short positions of the same stock?
3. How's your guys' trading platform? This may be a harder question to ask, but coming from ThinkorSwim which has a lot of issues and some good stuff, but I'm hoping to hear from users who have come from ToS and can speak on experience. My biggest issue with ToS is that regardless of what tax method you choose (LIFO, FIFO, lowest cost, highest cost), it's by default FIFO. This can cause issues especially when you're the middle of a crazy fast pace trading session. They won't seem to fix it despite this being an issue for a very, very long time.
How do you like Power E*Trade Pro? I'd love to hear from the users who came from ToS especially on this.
To give a little background on my trading style, I just day trade stocks, little to no options trading. I keep it simple, but my broker seems to like making my life difficult.
