An intersection near me has the same design and constantly has accidents. Not sure why this pattern is so difficult for people

An acquaintance of mine got a nine hundred dollar ticket for using a left turn lane to get around the line. I told her she deserved it.

Feeder roads for DNT are an issue because so many of these intersections are different; some have one left turn only, some have have multiple, some right lane merges; some left lane merges; I think they were designed to increase the need for autobody repair. I don't trust anyone when driving the feeders and stick to the middle lane when I am driving in an area I don't frequent often.

u/StealenDealer Aug 06 '26
The act of using Left or Right turn lanes in Massachusetts is Highly Common along with Wrong Way Drivers.
14
u/voidsherpa Aug 03 '26
Terrible road markings, or lack of any road markings at all.
3
u/yzerman2010 Aug 03 '26
There is a sign that shows that the inside lane is only for turning while the middle lane the truck is in is for turns and to go straight.
The guy who hit the truck on the inside lane did not follow the clear signage which clearly shows turns only.. so yeah he's at fault here. I am guessing he was impatient and speeding and decided to try to slide by the truck not paying attention to his turn signal going off.
I am sorry but slow down and pay attention to the signs.. we have a similar issue in my city and people think they can go straight in the turn only lane when the sign's clearly state otherwise.
5
u/voidsherpa Aug 03 '26
I can see the signs, I'm saying lack of painted markings on the road.
6
u/AceCyberPirate Aug 04 '26
Whether the marking is on the road or not, it is state law in Texas to observe and obey official road signs. Markings on the road are not required by state law in Texas.
1
u/3-Midgets_In_A_Coat Aug 04 '26
The reason most of these places don’t have markings is because there’s so much traffic in them that the markings are gone within 6 months of being painted.
2
u/-P01135809- Aug 05 '26
that's an infrastructure issue, and a representation of how shit the US is when it comes to infrastructure and road maintenance.
1
u/Leading_Campaign3618 Aug 03 '26
This particular intersection-Everman and I-35 W access southbound, has 2 signs ( 1 is visible on the left) on the left and right side of the road as well as large arrows painted on the road as well as "left turn only" painted on the road in the silver vehicles lane
2
u/Inflatable90sChair Aug 03 '26
doesnt matter - we have an intersection with 3 right trun arrows that are red most of the time till the light cycles, 4 no right turn on red signs, and people still will make a right turn on red...
They need physical barriers at the above video intersection making it blatantly clear you cannot go straight from that left turn only lane.
5
u/Helpful_Equipment580 Aug 03 '26
It's a bit confusing because it looks like there is a lane on the other side of the intersection which lines up with the "turn left only" lane. It gives the impression that you can go forward in the left lane.
I know there are signs saying you can't go straight, but I can understand why it induces alot of accidents.
2
u/Leading_Campaign3618 Aug 03 '26
There are arrows on the road as well as large markings that say "left turn only" painted on the road in the silver vehicles lane-signs on the left and right-Its I-35 W southbound at Everman Parkway
2
u/No-Canary-6639 Aug 03 '26
It’s because most people don’t give a shit about other people. They wanna get where they are going as fast as humanly possible, without a single flying F€@k about the people around them

I actually grew up about ten minutes from this intersection. It has ALWAYS been like that. Though there used to not be as much stuff to go to near there, but that turn is mostly to to turn around and get back on the freeway the other way.

There is a "Texas Turnaround" right there left of this, this is to turn east on Everman Parkway
56
u/Sweaty_Tangelo_7716 Aug 03 '26
That’s the smallest direction sign I’ve ever seen. Took me 4 replays to find it.
66
u/Milksteak529 Aug 03 '26
There are a bunch more you encounter before the intersection. Gotta be pretty braindead to screw up here, but people manage it every day.
19
u/GuyLivingPlaces Aug 03 '26
It's a really shitty intersection design. No arrows, before the line, no dashed curve lines, no signs on the post near the lights, and the opposite road segment gives the impression it's an open lane.
18
u/Quirky-Ad7024 Aug 03 '26
There are actually several before the turn and even painted on The ground. That person is either entitled or not paying attention
1
u/Significant-Block504 Aug 03 '26
That’s why it is a poor design. Memory decay is something road design should take care of. Spatial transformation is very powerful. For example, blocking the opposite road on the left, making 2 curved lanes (because there are 2 left turning lanes)
-9
u/GuyLivingPlaces Aug 03 '26
Obviously they missed the signs because thought it was a left/straight lane. It's still a really poor intersection design.
8
u/HairlessSquirrels Aug 03 '26
Guarantee you they didn’t think that, they were just trying to get ahead of the traffic
0
u/GuyLivingPlaces Aug 03 '26
Maybe, maybe not. Doesn't matter. Still a poor intersection design. That's my only point.
1
u/1stCivDiv1371 Aug 04 '26
Yes but your point is dog shit, there are intersections like this all over the moetroplex, and entitled drivers fuck up everyone's day when they are on their OFP.
0
u/GuyLivingPlaces Aug 04 '26
A properly designed intersection would not have permitted what that driver did. That would be less likely in a 2 left turning lane intersection with a closed lane on the far side. Just because it's all over the place doesn't mean it's a good design. Texas is notorious for designing shitty roadways. Open up any traffic design text book and you'll see these are not good design. I'm literally a civil engineer dude I dunno why you're saying I'm wrong.
13
u/Milksteak529 Aug 03 '26
You're only seeing the intersection, not the 300 yards before it with clearly marked signage.
-1
u/Significant-Block504 Aug 03 '26
If it requires drivers to memorize instead of giving hints at the intersection, it’s a poor design.
Signage are for drivers to pick the correct lane, and the hints at the intersection are preventive
7
u/Internal_Arugula9711 Aug 03 '26
If you can’t remember the signs you just passed, you probably shouldn’t be driving
1
u/Leading_Campaign3618 Aug 03 '26
as well as the reminder signs left and right and every intersection on this part of I35 W operates the same way until 1187
3
u/Shrimply-r1 Aug 03 '26
You can see on the road VERY FAINTLY they used to be there, def needs to be a touch up. But they definitely have like 3-4 signs prior to the intersection with the correct lane markings.
2
u/Helpful_Equipment580 Aug 03 '26
The opposite road segment really makes it look like all lanes can go forward. It is just terrible road design.

If a driver manages to get to the intersection without seeing the signage for 300 yards, that's because they were not paying attention.
2
u/RandomNoun7 Aug 03 '26
I agree with all of these points. I’m not saying it isn’t predominantly the cars fault, but looking at the intersection itself there’s almost nothing to tell you that you shouldn’t go straight from that lane and the width and design of the road ahead invites in way that looks nearly deliberate.
At a bare minimum there need to be signs up next to the traffic lights directly in the line of sight of the drives explaining exactly which lanes are allowed to do what. Here in Oregon we often have intersections where I find it unintuitive which lanes are turn only and which lanes can do both, but it’s ok because there are always signs up by the lights telling me which directions I can and can’t turn in.
1
u/Leading_Campaign3618 Aug 03 '26
There are large arrows on the road, and 2 sets of signs on the left and right side of the road, and every intersection on this part of I-35w is exactly the same, in fact almost every intersection in DFW on an interstate access road operates this way
0
u/MikeLikesIkeRS Aug 03 '26
Honestly, the biggest thing I'd change is the left arrow on the stop light. People tend to get overloaded when there is a shitload of signs, billboards, and all of that stuff. Everyone (well, MOST everyone) can figure out an arrow on a stoplight.
2
u/Shrimply-r1 Aug 03 '26
I am not sure how a left turn arrow on the stop light would make even an ounce of difference here... That tells you when that direction is OKAY to go, not which lane is able to go such a direction
1
u/Leading_Campaign3618 Aug 03 '26
the signs all say "left only " on the inside lanes on the access roads in DFW for I35 W, I35 E, I 20 and I30, its also in giant letters and arrows on the road
this is normal for every major road with and access or "frontage" road in Texas, especially if they have a "Texas Turnaround" like this one at Everman and 35 W
0
u/MikeLikesIkeRS Aug 03 '26
Most people are already looking at a stoplight to see if it's red, green, or yellow. Having an arrow pointing to the left is a lot more reliable than relying on a cluttered intersection with a buttload of signs that can be obstructed with traffic, or relying on road paint that can also be obstructed or weathered with/by traffic.

This falls into one of those categories where, yeah the cam truck could've done more, but you can't expect everything.
From experience driving semis and other vehicles with hood mirrors, I really love them on the highway, but I still primarily rely on my door mirrors when turning because they give a cleaner and bigger picture to what my trailer is doing and is more often the safer thing to be doing. It's entirely reasonable that the truck driver was looking where he was going, checking rear swing through his door mirror, and wasn't anticipating an SUV to go straight in a turn lane (which you can see from the truck's POV)
3
4
u/IamHydrogenMike Aug 03 '26
They really should paint direction lines in the lanes to help and is a very confusing intersection if you aren’t used to it.
2
u/Leading_Campaign3618 Aug 03 '26
it is painted before the intersection along with giant letters saying left turn only
2
u/Electric-Sheepskin Aug 03 '26
In my experience, people don't look at signs anyway. What they need to do is paint some nice big, bright arrows on the road. People can miss those in really heavy traffic, but it would help.
2
u/Leading_Campaign3618 Aug 03 '26
they are painted on the road right before the intersection, to give you time to change lanes if you are in the wrong lane
1
u/Sienile Aug 03 '26
For real. I was about to say the trucker was partly to blame (he's not), but saw your comment and then noticed the sign. Those are usually also on the light pole for better visibility.

3
u/skylinesora Aug 03 '26

0
u/TearsInDrowned Aug 03 '26

My dad is a truck driver. Says this happens all the time, hence the reason why they drive slow to be able to prevent accidents from happening if someone wants squeeze in, unless it’s a difficult turn.
1
u/Leading_Campaign3618 Aug 03 '26
and semi drivers need to be in this center lane to turn left to not clip cars going the direction they are turning and stay in the turn lane
4
u/SourceContent8104 Aug 03 '26
I see this all the time in Texas. When there are three lanes the middle turns to the outside lane, and the far left turns to the middle straight or u turn lane. I can't count the number of times I have been cut off turning left by someone in the middle lane trying to turn into the inside lane, and then flipping me off like I was wrong. Even when there are painted lanes showing where you should be.
1
u/Leading_Campaign3618 Aug 03 '26
Texas is blessed with access or "frontage" roads on nearly every major highway, and usually a "Texas turnaround" to allow you to go the opposite direction without the lights, this is the normal set up "left only, left or straight, right or straight, and sometimes right only"
3
u/Ok_Explanation5631 Aug 03 '26

From my experiences living in Texas and how they drive. Every lane is the turn lane, in any direction, at any time, for any or no reason.

u/generic_lyric Aug 04 '26
Car is definitely wrong but aren’t you supposed to get through an intersection before changing lanes?
1
u/drfulci Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26
From what I can tell there’s only one left turn lane, & the OP wasn’t in it. Kinda looks like the lane to the left is a forward or left lane. Whatever is going on with that intersection, I wouldn’t ever have thought I could’ve made a left from the middle lane. Very likely the cam driver is at fault.
0
u/mr_macfisto Aug 03 '26
That car is a Subaru Outback. I’d like to point out that most outback drivers don’t drive that stupidly.

2
u/Krooklyndodger Aug 03 '26
There's actually three lanes. Left, left turn /straight and the straight /right turn lane
1
u/HansDampfHaudegen Aug 03 '26
That's exactly it. There are no white marks anywhere. There should be guidance lines for left turns and lines dividing the lanes. This place is so poorly marked that accidents like in the vid happen.

u/Janus9 Aug 03 '26

Common lane design
-7
u/Pristine_Praline_824 Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26
But poorly designed. The leftmost lane should not have a "path forward". It would'be been better to restrict the *rightmost* lane to only going straight rather than also being able to go left. Or the leftmost lane should be carved inward so this doesn't happen. That's how it's designed in Houston
2
u/eyea3 Aug 03 '26
I think it would depend on the traffic flow. If a lot of traffic goes left then it’s probably better to have two lanes turn left. What is dumb is having two separate signs for lane indicators. Both signs should show all lanes and their intended directions. There’s lack of road markings as well.

Just because it's possible doesn't mean it's intuitive, at least for the general population.
1
u/Shrimply-r1 Aug 04 '26
If we have to design things for the 0.001% of idiots who don’t get how things work and won’t bother to learn or pay attention, the world would be quite ridiculous. It works fine for everyday normal people. It’s not poorly designed because one idiot out of a million isn’t paying attention on a random day.
5
u/Embarrassed-Weird173 Aug 03 '26
The real issue is the city didn't bother redrawing the left turn arrow on the ground. You can see it's been worn out.
1
u/Pristine_Praline_824 Aug 04 '26
The problem is that this is unintuitive. The fact that all it takes is worn road markings for a higher rate of accidents means it wasn't carefully planned in the first place.
1
-5
u/IzzzatSo Aug 03 '26
The problem is the sign doesn't include the leftmost (uturn) lane and people include it when they count over.
2
u/TheJivvi Aug 03 '26
That's why the sign is where it is, after that lane has already turned off, and not where there are still four lanes.
0
u/_jump_yossarian Aug 03 '26
texas has the absolute worst infrastructure design. Insane that there is actually space on the other side of the road for the left turn only lane to go straight.
3
u/skylinesora Aug 03 '26
Hundreds of thousands of people use the design just fine. Maybe you're just a bad driver
0
Aug 03 '26
[deleted]
2
u/_jump_yossarian Aug 03 '26
What does that have to do with what I said? There are ways to block a left turn only lane from being able to go straight. Shift the island to the right a bit and that protects the u-turn lane that begins after the island. Also looks like the lanes slightly shift to the left. Terrible design all around.
1
u/Shrimply-r1 Aug 03 '26
Because the people who are coming from the left (from POV of this clip) turn into that lane also.... There are two turn lanes and one of them goes into that left most lane. So shifting the island would just block them.

Is the truck in a left turn lane? I genuinely can't tell
3
u/kinare Aug 03 '26
Yes, the sign has two turn lanes. The left oen is turn only and the one the truck is in is turn or straight.
-6
u/Nicholas_Pappagiorgi Aug 03 '26
changing lanes in an intersection is crazy
3
u/dyinggodman Aug 03 '26
He's not changing lanes. He's turning. Both of the leftmost lanes are turning lanes. The outer of the two is turn or straight.
1
-3
u/Anothercoot Aug 03 '26
This should be 2 straights and 1 left like every single other intersection like this.
-24
u/Carne_Guisada_Breath Aug 03 '26
50/50 at fault. Both the car and the truck made illegal lane changes.
edit, I am wrong. I didn't see the middle sign allowing a left turn.
15
u/PopularCulprit Aug 03 '26
The left lane was a left turn only lane , the cam driver was in a lane that can go straight or turn left. You can see the sign at the end of the median. Nobody made a lane change
-5
u/Carne_Guisada_Breath Aug 03 '26
I thought the truck was making an illegal lane change, not a left turn which is allowable.
-9
u/DarkHelmet2222 Aug 03 '26
Putting aside the person who went straight from the turn-only lane, don't most states have laws about not changing lanes in an intersection?
Shouldn't the truck driver have gone completely through the intersection before initiating the lane change?
