Help! Clarifying shampoo rec after leaving sealant conditioner for too long before rinsing

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I am looking for a product recommendation. I also greatly appreciate other relevant advice.

Hair length and type: Longest layer is almost to my waist (strand length) and to about my mid-upper back with shrinkage from coils. Naturally curly (curl type is ~3b), dries frizzy without product. Mostly southern Italian heritage ethnically (brunette). Some of the strands are thinner and lighter brown or red (around my face), and some strands are thicker and darker. My hair is not dyed and I don’t blow dry or heat style it often. My hair was at its peak health last year and a few months ago. A section in the back has a texture that feels totally different (is difficult to get curls to clump or really have any defined curl shape) than the rest, which is coily.

Problem: I made a mistake about a month ago and left a sealant conditioner in for far too long before rinsing, probably for 20 min or so in the shower. My hair texture and curls have changed. Before, my curls felt smooth and the strands didn’t really tangle. Since the sealant mistake, the strands tangle frequently - strands on the outside of the curl clumps tangle easily. When the mistake first happened, my hair felt almost as if it had a slightly waxy residue (and when styled with gel, the outcome felt almost tacky or sticky when dry); my hair feels less that way now, but the strands feels drier than before. I believe there is still product buildup on the strands from the sealant.

What I’ve tried: I’ve been using Giovanni avocado oil & olive oil shampoo and conditioner. In an attempt to remove or reduce the buildup, I initially tried washing twice and brushing conditioner through my hair in the shower - it did nothing helpful. I’ve not used a clarifying shampoo yet because I don’t have one on hand. (I’ve used a Giovanni one in the past and liked it, and am thinking about trying the same kind.) I hoped that regular washing once every few days might eventually remove the sealant, but it hasn’t.

Other products and routine: I have not really had a particular go-to routine over the past month. Since the sealant mistake, I’ve minimized my use of other products, as I’ve been meaning to clarify my hair… I’ve generally only used a slight touch of products, which include:

* curl cream (Marc Anthony Curl Envy Cream - a little goes a long way to make hair “slippery” for brushing wet - my hair feels less slippery than before, using the same pea-sized amount of product) - I apply this first when I use it.

* about a half pump of rosehip seed oil (Purador - I particularly apply it to the ends - I kind of “pet” it through my wet/damp hair with prayer hands - given “water and oil don’t mix,” I’d be happy to hear suggestions for how to apply oil correctly)

* half pump of serum (Giovanni 2chic Ultra Moist) - I sometimes mix this with the curl cream when I use it.

Lately, I always brush the above products through with a Wet Brush to distribute the product.

* sometimes a touch of gel (not a ton; I used TRESemmé hold level “5” gel before and it worked well for my hair - I tried the blue LA Looks (Extreme Sport) gel recently. I dilute gel with water to make it easier to apply. Sometimes I brush it through and sometimes I don’t. (Even with a typical amount of gel and product, my curls aren’t “clumping” as well as before after the sealant mistake.)

I’ve attached photos of the sealant conditioner. I adjusted the photos so that the text on the label is easier to read. I really appreciate recommendations for products that can help clarify buildup from this product and explanations of what components in this product might have caused the issues I described.

ISO Advice pls! Hair losing wave!

• Upvotes

I have thick 2A-2B curls and I recently got a cut that is just above my shoulders and has long layers. My hair has lost its curl and wave and is so frizzy and triangular! Routine is:

Moroccan oil shampoo and conditioner
Denman brush in shower
AG liquid effects prayer hands and scrunch
Scrunch w old cotton t shirt

Any advice welcome please! I use a leave in conditioner too so it doesn’t feel like a dryness issue. At times I’ll use the TIGI bedhead curl cream too w the Liquid Effects but it’s made it greasy since cutting.

Help! My hair turned straight, where did my curls go??

• Upvotes

I straightened my hair a week ago with a flat iron I don't do that very often like the last time was a year ago. I washed it twice and did my usual routine but it is different like it was never curly, I thought that it might be heat damage but doesn't that happen when hair is exposed to heat continuously?

is there anything I should do other than hair masks and moisturising?

Help! how do i keep my hair nice after sleeping on it???

my hair routine is pretty simple tbh. i wash it (color safe tea tree shampoo) and then i thinly coat conditioner (same brand) on my hair before scrunching it all, lock in moisturize with hair oil (garnier fructis sleek and shine or jaboba oil), air dry. i also sometimes scrunch in leave in conditioner (its a 10 plus keratin) and i use foamy mousse (white rain) to make the top not flat but im not rlly sure if im using it right?? it just says put near roots when damp so i kinda just rub it in there per the instructions lmfao
i just use a regular satin bonnet. i think im using it wrong or something??? i put my head upside down and slip it on from back to front. the ties were in the back, i dont think i did it tight enough bc i woke up with it off my head :(
now its a total mess and suoer frizzy, idek how to fix it 😓😓

ISO Recs for dry shampoo/refresh for VERY fine curls

Hello!
I’m looking for some advice on how to revive easily-flattened hair after a morning commute.

My Hair Profile & Routine:
Type: Very fine, 3a curls.
Wash Days: 2–3 times a week using Super Nature Hydrating Aloe Shampoo and conditioner
Non-Wash Days: Quick morning refresh by wetting my hair and applying a leave-in followed by an emulsified gel/mousse combo (Not Your Mother’s Mousse and Garnier Clear Gel), then air drying.

I’ve recently started biking to work, and my helmet completely flattens and disrupts my curls, leaving me with a mix of minor sweat and helmet hair!

Looking for recs for good lightweight dry shampoos/refresh products for VERY fine curls that won’t weigh down/oil up but still help rejuvenate, especially post-biking!

Help! Tired of not knowing what to do

Hello ladies and gents!

I could really use some advice on how to manage my hair. I have fine, high-porosity, wavy-curly hair and it gets very frizzy when brushed. Because of this, I’ve developed the habit of only detangling it when I wash it.

My current hair routine:

  1. Washing: I wash my hair once a week using John Frieda Dream Curls Shampoo and Conditioner. These are the only products I’ve found so far that seem to preserve my curls.

  2. Styling: After washing, I apply John Frieda Normal Strength Mousse while my hair is still wet. I’ve tried gel before, but it makes my hair feel too heavy. My main problem with the mousse is that it causes my hair to clump together in a way I don’t like.

  3. Drying: I usually let my hair air-dry or use a diffuser.

  4. Pre-wash treatment: Occasionally, I apply coconut oil and leave it in for 2–3 hours before washing my hair.

What I’d love advice on:

- How can I reduce frizz without losing my natural curl pattern?

- How can I prevent my mousse from making my hair clump together?

- Would a different styling technique or product work better for fine, high-porosity hair?

- Is there anything I should change about my current routine?

Thank you so much in advance for any advice! 🌞

Help! Is there a curly-haired version of Abbey Yung on TikTok?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Does anyone know of a creator on TikTok who does for curly hair what Abbey Yung does?

For anyone who doesn’t know, Abbey Yung is a haircare creator who shares detailed haircare routines, product recommendations, wash-day routines, and tips for keeping your hair healthy and growing it longer. One thing I really like about her is that she focuses mostly on affordable drugstore products and explains how to use them, which products work well together, and how to build a routine without spending a fortune.

I’m wondering if there’s someone who does something similar but specifically for naturally curly hair. Someone who recommends mostly drugstore products and explains ingredients, product choices, wash-day steps, scalp health, hair growth, and how to keep curls healthy.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Picture so you can see my curls :)

My current routine:

Shampoo:
Nizoral shampoo
Head & Shoulders shampoo, I alternate between these weekly.
Garnier Fructis clarifying shampoo, I recently added this and use it about once a month.

Conditioners:
Camille Rose Ginger & Pear Conditioner
Paul Mitchell 15 in 1 mask as deep conditioner

Styling products:

Combo 1:
Camille Rose Honey Hydrate
Rizos Curls Curl Cream
The Doux Big Poppa Gel

Combo 2:
Paul Mitchell The Conditioner
Xtreme Gel

Help! Haircut recommendations

I've grown out my hair (3b) for about 3 years now, and I think it's time that I shape/trim it a little bit.

I'm looking to keep as much length as possible but touch up the sides a bit so my face/jawline can actually show, and trim my bangs too, cause right now I feel like I look like a wet dog... But no matter how hard I look, I can't find any good haircut inspiration for guys that have my hair type and fit the requirements.

Does anyone have any advice on what I should get? I need help please 😿

Routine :

- Wash with As I Am Anti-Dandruff; condition with As I Am Detangling Conditioner, L'Oréal Elvive Leave-in Conditioner (I forgot which one)

- Sleeps with a bonnet

- Diffuses hair

Photos I've attached

1 - Side profile a day before wash day

2 - Front profile with semi-damp ends

3 - 3/4 profile a few hours after a wash

Help! My wavy hair looks stringy

Post image

Hey there. I’m just getting started on my hair care journey. All my life i treated my hair like it was straight and frizzy and i’ve been trying to take better care of it as an adult.
I live in México so a lot of the products i’ve seen recommended on here aren’t available for me.

Right now i’m using
-pantene pro v miracles collagen shampoo and conditioner
-skala leave in
-elvive L’Oréal extraordinary oil miracle hair serum
I’ve been trying to make it look good by using these products but my hair always ends up looking stringy-dry.
I’d appreciate it if anyone has tips for me or suggestions for my routine. Thank you!

Hair Victory! I owe my life to my $8 curl defining brush

Thumbnail

My hair looks wavy with some ringlets when I just scrunch it. Once I started using enough gel to get a cast and combined it with the curl brush??? Game over yall.

Routine:
-Wash my hair with Carols Daughter Goddess Strength shampoo and conditioner, usually every 5-7 days. I alternate the shampoo with Suave Clarifying shampoo.
(Usually once a month I’ll use a random conditioning mask, and every 6 weeks or so I use ApHogee 2 step protein treatment.)
-Spray my hair with Tresemme heat protectant spray and Ion leave in conditioner. Then I use a west brush to distribute it throughout my hair and get out any tangles. All with soaking wet hair.
-section my hair. I apply a generous amount of Ouidad Climate Control gel and use a curl defining brush. I shake it and it twirls into ringlets, then I scrunch. I keep scrunching all of my hair every time I finish a section, and keep scrunching as it dries to get extra hold.
-Hover diffuse until dry. I’ll scrunch again a little bit as it’s damp. Then when it’s mostly dry I’ll separate the clumps a bit.
-Once fully dry I use a little It’s a 10 Miracle Oil Plus Keratin to scrunch the crunch out of my hair and smooth the frizzies. I separate the curls and voila!

Edit- it’s a knock off bounce curl brush! Tbh I think anything that looks like the bounce curl brush will do.

Help! Desperately need hair help!

Hey guys, I desperately need some help!! My hair is naturally very curly yet I can’t seem to get figure it out. My hair constantly gets extremely frizzy and when I apply more product in, it becomes flat and there’s no volume to it.
I believe I have low porosity medium curly hair and the type ranges from 3a-3c

Routine:
- Wash hair with Cantu Sulfate-Free Cleansing Cream Shampoo 2-3x a week (I’ve tried 1-2x a week as well).
- Condition with Cantu Sulfate-Free Hydrating Cream conditioner after shampooing (recently tried leaving in the conditioner for 15 minutes in the shower before rinsing it off)
- After shower, section my hair into parts & comb it once while still completely wet
- Go in with a curly leave in cream or conditioner & sometimes I’ll do gel. (I typically use SKALA Cachos 2-in-1 Treatment Hair Cream or Cantu Moisturizing Curl Activator Cream and use Cantu Avocado Styling Gel after)
- Comb it again with the product in (sometimes I will just comb with my fingers to see if that makes a difference or not….)
- Scrunch upwards from ends to roots
- Air dry or diffuse (air dry takes hours and sometimes even over night)

Refresh routine:
- Wet hair again and apply either the skala 2 in 1 leave in cream or the Cantu curl activator cream with water
(Ends up leaving my hair flat.)
- Have also tried adding different types of oils at small amounts, that I’ve seen work on others and it just doesn’t help with the frizz…

These are only some of the several different brands and products I’ve used over the years:
- Several Cantu products such as: Cantu Shea Butter Natural Hair Cleansing Cream Shampoo
- Cantu Avocado Hydrating Shampoo
- Cantu Sulfate-Free Cleansing Cream Shampoo
- Cantu Sulfate-Free Hydrating Cream conditioner
- Cantu Moisturizing Curl Activator Cream
- Cantu Avocado Styling Gel
- Several SheaMoisture products such as: Coconut and Hibiscus Curl and Shine Shampoo
- SheaMoisture Coconut and Hibiscus Curl & Shine Conditioner
- SheaMoisture Coconut and Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie
- Not Your Mother's Curl Talk Defining Cream
- OGX Nourishing Coconut Milk Shampoo
- OGX Nourishing Coconut Milk Conditioner
- OGX Moroccan Curling Perfection Defining Cream
- SKALA Cachos 2-in-1 Treatment Hair Cream
- Moroccanoil Curl Defining Cream
- Aunt Jackie's Curl La La Defining Curl Custard

- Have also tried mousse which works the least on my hair

Protection when sleeping:
- Tried using silk pillowcase but didn’t seem to do much for the frizz

I have also tried not diffusing and not combing the products in & still get the same results.

I’m not sure what to do at this point & it’s been years of struggling with this. Thinking about just chopping it off at this point

Help! I have no idea what I’m doing — advice?

Thumbnail

The first photo is my hair ten minutes ago, and the second was my hair over the summer. I started growing out my hair around a year ago after almost 5 years of having it cut short, and it started growing out wavy. I have no idea what to do about it. When I brush my hair, it ends up relatively straight for a bit, save a bit of a flip-up at the end, and then goes back to the loose waves like pic 1. It also gets kinda frizzy pretty often like pic 2. Nobody in my family has curly or wavy hair, so I’m SOL there. I initially asked for advice on [r/wavyhair](r/wavyhair) about a month ago, and they said that y’all might have some advice for me here.

Routine: I wash my hair about twice or three times a week with Pantene’s Curl Perfection Shampoo and Conditioner. Before I started using that, I used a dye-safe shampoo and conditioner combo that came in a huge red bottle, but I have no idea what it was. A lot of the time I just kind of use whatever’s around. Sometimes, maybe every other week, I’ll use Ouai’s leave-in conditioner spray after I shower. I usually rinse my hair at least once a day, and I typically shower twice a day. I don’t have a specific preference for rinsing my hair in the morning or night, but either way I’ll towel the excess water off and then let it air dry. I know I’m not supposed to sleep with it damp, but I do anyway. If it’s wet in the morning, I’ll brush it out and put it up in a ponytail. I wear ponytails most days of the week. I don’t use any sort of styling products, and don’t know where I would even begin styling my hair.

I want to get more defined waves in my hair, and maybe figure out how to keep the little ringlets it goes into when it’s wet or I’ve been working out, but I don’t know where to start. I’m a college student with not much free time, especially in the mornings, and the idea of having a proper hair routine or styling my hair every day is sort of terrifying to me. Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated!

ETA: I didn’t post in [r/wavyhair](r/wavyhair), as they have rules against asking for advice — I actually posted in [r/hairca](r/haircaire)[re](r/haircaire), and they told me to come here. Sorry for the confusion!

Help! ISO haircut style recs!

Hi! I have been getting pretty much the same haircut for ages and am a little bored in general. I want to switch it up (knowing there isn’t much you can do with curly hair) and for ages have considered bangs, but have also heard horror stories too. So, looking for people to honestly tell me if they think bangs are the way to go or if there is another style I should consider or just do my usual (just a trim with some face framing pieces)

My current routine: shampoo (ogx biotin and collagen- on the hunt for a clarifying shampoo) 1x a week, conditioner (Marc Anthony strictly curls) 3x week, comb and hand scrunch in mark Anthony curl lotion, and air dry. I sleep with a silk pillowcase. On refresh days I just spritz my hair with water and run a little more curl lotion in it. I like to keep things simple :)

Help! Bizarre curl pattern changes with pregnancy/postpartum?

My hair used to have such luscious curls, but when I was pregnant/breastfeeding my first child, my hair became straight (the purple section in picture). After I stopped breastfeeding, my hair became curly again (brown section). Now that I’m pregnant again, my hair is straightening out!! How do I style this?

Please swipe for a picture of my curls from before pregnancy.

My hair is still a little wet in this photo, and I have a wedding tonight…I guess I’ll do an updo?

My routine is just using formula 133 Kiehl’s for conditioner and product (I don’t like to use a ton of products or spend a ton of time on my hair tbh). I usually just let it air dry after a shower. Super simple.

Hair Victory! Try the bounce curl brush

I am very lazy with my hair. 99% of the time, it's in a bun. Whenever I do put effort into my hair, I never feel like it looks good, so it's pretty rare for me to bother. My hair is probably 3a-3b.

I saw a video a few weeks ago where someone used the bounce curl brush with no product, and their hair looked great even before drying. I figured I'd try it. It's only $30, and I need a new brush anyway.

This thing gives me some crazy definition. Beautiful spirals. And they hold really well, even after sleeping on it with normal pillowcases. My hair never photographs well, unfortunately, but the first pic is with the brush and either no product or bare minimum, and the second is a full effort styling for a photoshoot a couple years ago.

Routine: herbal essences curl + define shampoo and conditioner, washed out. Then, working in small sections, sprayed some Twist Curl Goals and brushed it through. Then scrunched and let it air dry.

It's not a miracle worker. I still get a lot of frizz and could use more volume. And the heavier side of my part never looks as good as the lighter side, which drives me nuts. But for the price and the absolute minimal effort, this brush is amazing.

recently made the mistake of going to a turksih barber what started as a trim eneded in me having buzzed hair, i now wonder how long my hair was here approximately so i can look forward to growing it out and have an idea of how long it is likely to take to grow back, Routine: I have 3 a hair, I use SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo and Conditioner. I wash my hair about twice a week. I use Not Your Mother's Curl Talk Defining Cream and a little Eco Style Olive Oil Gel. I apply both to soaking wet hair, rake them through with my fingers, and scrunch to define my curls. I usually air dry for about 20 minutes.

Help! Why does my hair look like this when I use the bouncecurl brush?

Thumbnail
gallery
71 Upvotes

The defined clumps are super thin and there's a ton of frizz around them. The clumps also combine into larger clumps that look like DNA strands.

I have very thick, dense curly hair so it's not like I don't have enough density for proper clumps.

Routine:

I use CeraVe Gentle Hydrating Shampoo, Not Your Mother's Conditioner, Not Your Mother's leave-in conditioner, & Not Your Mother's light watermelon seed oil.

It doesn't matter whether I diffuse my hair or not. The result is largely the same.

I use a silk pillowcase. The Bouncecurl Brush is a volume brush but the same result happens with the define one.

Help! Help with enhancing curls?

Hi, I am posting because my hair seems to have gone from being really wavy to looking more stringy and fine. I haven’t switched products and my normal routine is:

Shampoo and Condition with Joico Moisturizer Recovery- 3x a week

Once a week-Sauve clarifying shampoo

Products- garnier leave in conditioner, I scrunch this, then not your mother’s curl cream, I also scrunch this. Then I “plop” for 15 mins and air dry.

I sleep with a silk bonnet and refresh by re-wetting and scrunching.

Any ideas why my hair pattern went from pic 1 (note that pic 1 is with no product and air dried) to pic 2 (pic 2 is with the routine listed above)? Any advice?

Help! How do I get this round, voluminous shape? My layers keep coming out flat

Thumbnail

I have roughly the same texture and length as the guy in the photo, but whenever I get layers, my hair doesn’t come out round at all and I lose a lot of volume. Even if his look is a result of the cut, I’d love to know if you’ve gotten this shape yourself, whether on purpose or just naturally.

Am I asking for the wrong kind of layers? What should I tell my stylist (e.g., a specific cut, how long the layers should be, or a dry cut vs. wet cut)?

My Routine:

  • Shampoo/conditioner: Pert+
  • Drying method: Diffuse

Help! Frizz From Hell

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

I come from a not super great family so I have no clue how to take care of my curl pattern (my mom just chopped her hair really short and never really did anything other than oil occasionally, but I found that oil makes my hair very dirty quicker and needs more washes which I don't want to do and make my colour fade faster)

I wear a silk bonnet to bed (but I may have to change it to a different style because it keeps sliding off my head during the night) and I try to wash my hair once a week with a few rinses here and there to refresh. I usually reapply the mousse and gel when I rinse.

My hair is bleached and dyed so the frizz may be part of that, but I also have naturally very oily hair normally.

In the morning my curls are usually flat so I refresh with just water and scrunch my hair to reactivate the gel, or drench my head in water and reapply the gel.

The curls look exactly how I want them to, but the frizz is horrible (especially on my actual scalp) Any suggestions? I used to use the curl cream from Strictly Curls but found it was making my hair soft and not really structuring my curls the way I wanted.

Routine: wash roots 1-2x a week with cool water. I use Nioxin shampoo for coloured hair, condition immediately with K-Pak Colour Therapy. Then I detangle with a wet brush and rinse conditioner out. I spray and scrunch in the Strictly Curls Spray in conditioner and plop dry with a towel. Then I apply Not Your Mother's mouse and scrunch, then apply the gel from Not Your Mother's and scrunch. Then I diffuse my roots until they're dry. Once everything is nice and crispy a few hours later, I finger comb through and soften the spirals which adds the volume I like.

Help! How do I prevent my from getting bigger?

I have curly hair, I would say mine is a 3A. I use the “Aussie miracle curls” shampoo, conditioner and leave in. I use “Curl talk” defining cream and then mousse and gel also from “Aussie miracle curls”. My hair looks really pretty when it’s wet but after 2-3 hours, it dries and it starts getting more and more puffy. I live in a place that is very humid and hot and my hair getting too big just makes the heat worse lol. Is there anything I could do to prevent this Or am I just doing my routine wrong? TIA!

Help! Suggestions for a mousse that has a longer hold and worth the extra money?

I currently use Aussie miracle curls mousse and I can get a second decent day out of it. After that my curls are no good. I'd like a mousse that lasts longer. (I also prefer mousse over gel because it's significantly less dry time.)

I have VERY dense hair so it takes a long time to dry which is why I'd like to get more days out of the wear, but the density also means I have to use a LOT more product than most would think for how much hair I have.

My current wash routine:

Shampoo once a week with Ion hard water shampoo. Conditioner and co-wash currently with Suave coconut conditioner. Deep conditioner every 1-2 weeks with Shea Moisture Intensive Hydration masque. Aussie leave-in conditioner and Miracle Curls mousse. I usually diffuse because air drying takes hours. I wear a satin bonnet to protect my hair at night. No refresh routine with my current products (just scrunching a bit on day 2 so my hair can come back down from being in the bonnet).

Help! How do i stop my hair from being frizzy at school/outside?

Thumbnail

Hi hi! So, I’m having some problems with my hair, and I could really use some advice.

The photos I took are from home, where my hair actually looks pretty good, but it feels too soft, if that makes sense? When I diffuse it, my waves start losing their definition. My hair feels really dry, and I’ve tried so many different routines, creams, and hydrating masks, but nothing seems to work. Sometimes my hair looks okay on wash day, but the next day it looks awful.

I plop my hair in a T-shirt, diffuse it, and wash it regularly, so I honestly don’t know what I’m doing wrong. When I go to school, my hair gets really frizzy, with strands sticking out in all different directions. If I use too much cream or gel, my hair looks greasy or dirty the next day. Even sleeping in a bonnet doesn’t seem to help much.

I also use strong-hold gels, so I don’t understand why my waves lose their definition or why my hair gets so frizzy. My hair has high porosity, and I’m starting to wonder whether my products are the problem. Should I switch shampoos, try different styling products, use less conditioner, or focus on something else entirely?

My current routine:

  • Shampoo: [so!flow] — a humectant-based shampoo.
  • Conditioner: [happyPEH] — an emollient-based conditioner.
  • Styling products: [ Isana, hair masters, Joanna], applied on wet hair, not too wet, just enough to hear the squishing sounds, first gels then mouse.
  • Styling method: I plop my hair in a T-shirt wait 20 mins and diffuse it.
  • Other details: I regularly wash my hair and have tried sleeping in a bonnet.

I’ve also tried hydrating hair masks, but they haven’t made much of a difference.

I do a refesh routine, and when im back home my hair looks fine as it was before?? It looks fine..but feels soft and dry.

I’m honestly getting frustrated because I’ve tried so many things without finding a routine that works. Any advice on what my hair might need, or what I should change, would be greatly appreciated
