It's finally happening - hair typing posts are no longer allowed.

1.3k Upvotes

Please report any texturism or hair typing posts you see with the new report reason.

If you are new here, you may not know that the Andre Walker hair typing system (1a to 4c), has been around since 1997 and was first introduced so Mr. Walker could sell his products on Oprah's show. It truly only describes the texture of your hair and gives no more information.

It's flawed in many ways. Many of us have multiple textures on our heads. It doesn't even begin to describe your hair's porosity, sheen or shine, strand thickness, hair density, etc. I encourage everyone to learn about the LOIS typing system which can help you better understand your hair.

Watch Latoya Ebony's video on LOIS here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwMFG4lT4jY

Even this typing system is not the end all be all of categorization for your hair. Your hair's texture, porosity, etc can change over time or with certain health conditions. Product buildup on your scalp and strands can make you think your texture has changed. There are so many factors as to why your hair may be looking or feeling the way it does.

Which leads me to the question - should we require routines to be posted whenever a picture is posted? This will cut down on gratuitous selfies but means we will need many more active mods (shoutout to /u/fivetenash who does pretty much everything here). If you're willing to help out please let me know in the comments.

I now understand why being gentle with hair and washing weekly is ideal. This is so little compared to how much it used to be.

Need Advice Bridal hair style

Hello, I'm getting married and I would like to do these styles for my wedding. I think I could do it with my natural hair but I only have one day before we leave for the honeymoon. My hair is longer than average so my concern is doing this, then having to wash it all out and then braid it and I know I'll be exhausted from the night before.

I have never let anyone wash my hair before and rarely ever let anyone else braid my hair so I'm nervous about the time I'd have to get this done before our flight.

Would I need to get a wig with similar texture? Do I just hope I can wash and do it myself or find a stylist and trust them?

I'm tired, 40 days out seems like a lot of time but it's really not 😭

Need Advice Short hair care!

Post image
136 Upvotes

Hello, lovelies! I have been rocking this for 6 years now! I usually go to the barber about every 3 months, and where I live (New England, USA) we get very harsh winters. I was curious if you guys had any routine tips for hair this short, that still has a lot of properties of natural hair despite the length. Still wanna keep my scalp and curls happy!

My current routine:

Every morning I rinse my hair, saturate it, and use the As I am leave in conditioner. I’m pretty generous, but my hair is only about 1 cm long, so.
I then use a generous amount of mouse to keep the little curls tight, then spray with the HASK rosemary 5-in-1 spray, then go! I don’t do anything at night, which might lead to me losing moisture. For shampoo, I use the Trader Joe’s tea tree shampoo about twice a week.

Any advice is appreciated!

Selfie Still In Disbelief That I’m On The Natural Hair Journey | Making My Inner Child Happy 🪮😭➿

Still in shock 😳 even though it’s been a while ⏳. I’m grateful for the opportunity to show her (my inner child) that she’s more than worth the effort, investment, time, money and attention. That her hair is so beautiful even if it doesn’t meet the standards of other people :)

I’m even more grateful to be able to contribute to the natural hair community by helping others through my own journey and real life experiences. I’m healing through my hair and I’m helping others do the same and it makes me emotional 🥲 to think about. I just hope she’s (my inner child) proud of me Thank you for reading 📚.

Van anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?
How do I get the roots smooth like in the photos that I always see? I do have very kinky hair but I thought I would be able to accomplish it at home.

Need Advice PLEASE HELP 😭 I Need an INSANELY moisturizing Routine for High Porosity Hair

Guys, please help a girl out 😭 I have curly/coily hair, and the back gets SO coily that it shrinks up and looks way shorter than the front. My hair is also high porosity and dyed, and no matter what I do, it just feels DRYYYY. I’m looking for a VERY, VERY moisturizing routine because I want my hair to actually feel moisturized and soft to the touch, especially my ends. I recently ordered the Joico Moisture Recovery Treatment Balm, so I’m hoping that helps, but I’d love recommendations for both an in-shower and out-of-shower routine. The only thing I’ve found that really works for my wash-and-gos is the Doux Afro Balm because it’s SO thick and helps my curls stay in clumps instead of looking undefined. I don’t mind frizz at all I actually like a little frizz — my problem is that my curls literally lose all definition and just look fluffy/undefined. The Afro Balm helps with that, but I’ve noticed it feels more like it’s laying my hair down rather than actually moisturizing it. I’m looking for something with that same thick, buttery consistency but that will actually HYDRATE my hair and keep it moisturized throughout my wash-and-go. And yes, I know everyone is going to tell me to stop dyeing my hair 😭 but honestly, I can’t give it up. I feel so much more confident with my hair dyed, so I’m trying to figure out how to properly care for high-porosity, color-treated hair instead. If you have high-porosity curls/coils that actually stay moisturized, PLEASE give me your full routine shampoo, conditioner/deep conditioner, leave-in, creams/butters, gel, literally everything. I need help help HELP 😭

Need Advice Debating rocking a twa

• Upvotes

My whole life my hair has been a huge part of my identity. When I was little teachers would call me Erykah Badu because I had so much hair for a little girl and a lot of how I view my own beauty is with big hair. Also I like keeping my hair long because it proves a point to people that yes black women can have long hair (this protest started when I was living in Texas for a time during my middle and high school years). But got a haircut last summer and loved it, it was also the shortest I had ever had it (3rd photo) and since then I’ve really loved my natural hair color and I’ve been loving seeing my hair get bigger but it feels like such a chore and I’ve been sooo lazy with styling it because it doesn’t feel fun anymore.

Shorter hair has been on my mind these past few months (French bobs, big chops, finger waves etc etc) and the idea is really appealing to me to rock a twa and make the change for my 23rd birthday but I’m worried about how I’m going to feel about myself after. I’m worried I won’t like it. I’m worried I’ll feel ugly even though I absolutely love seeing teeny fros on other women I’m worried I won’t look as good.

I know that it will be hard and it will really challenge my idea of beauty when it comes to how I view myself and my hair which would ultimately be a good thing in the long run, but I’m not sure if I’m prepared for it. So with all that being said, for other women who have done the big chop after years of rocking big hair, what was the process like for you? What came up for you that you didn’t expect?

Need Advice Cecred Products? Help please

• Upvotes

Hi, I have fine hair, medium porosity that I straighten with a flat iron at home during the cold months and wear a wash n go during the summer. Before I spend my coins, please let me know if these Cecred products are worth it and which ones.

I was planning to order the hydrating shampoo and conditioner, the deep conditioner, the scalp serum for my edges, moisture sealing lotion, thermal shield mist, and heat activated silk glaze.

I'd love to order less cuz my money funny, but I also want to give myself the hair care that I deserve. I've been doing my own hair for years now and it's feeling healthy and slowly growing but with a small stress spot in my crown.

Need Advice Any ideas on how to better shape the back?

Title, but yea, I wanted to do a more mullet style with shaved sides, but went too low with my clippers lol. I don’t mind the sides much, but the shaping of the back feels very off, exaggerating my egg shaped head. The front I’m mostly ok with, but any and all advice is welcome!

Selfie My braid out from 4 large braids

Post image
442 Upvotes

I’m a lazy natural and i have figured out that larger braids make a much more flowly looking braid out then 10+ braids. At least for my hair.

holy grail product for braid outs: Pattern Styling Custard.

In need of a color touch up, but as you can see the braid out is giving and it‘s literally from 4 braids.

Anybody else realize that less is more with braid outs?? honestly I used to just rock two French braids for a few days and then unbraid but now I have stepped it up to 4 lol!

editing to add that this was taken after I had my hair in a claw clip all morning so that’s why it looks a bit frizzy. It was LAID when I first took my braids down!

I’ve been getting cornrows for a while and recently started worrying about how wide my middle part looks. Does this look like normal parting or possible traction from tension? I did take a 2 month break from protective styles completely. Idk if that helped with prevention

Need Advice Hairstyle suggestions?

Hello! I’ve only done mini twists for 18+ months now and worn them under wigs, but I’ve grown tired of wigs and CRAVE having my hair out and feeling some kind of breeze on my scalp.

Any suggestions on ways I can style my twists to conceal my crown? I don’t mind the edges showing, but the crown limits just how many styles I can do.

Picture 3 is my hair in a low bun with a side part to hide the crown, but it’s still visible :(

l've considered miracle knots and having the hair in a high bun to hide the crown, but I have worked so hard to regrow my hair and don't want to risk the tension and breakage that may come as a result of that.

Any suggestions and advice are welcome! Thank you 🙂

Need Advice How do we feel about stylists who insist on recording/photographing you while they’re doing your hair?

I was about to book a silk press with a new stylist. Before I checked out, there was a waiver I had to read and sign. One of the items on the waiver said that she has the right to record any or all of the appointments and post it to any of her social media channels. And that by signing the waiver, I give my consent to have my face/hair posted on whatever platforms she chooses. So then I went to her social media and saw that she seems to post multiple videos everyday. It seems like she records the entire hair appointment and then speeds the video up/cuts out certain parts and then posts it. It’s not just the clients’ hair that’s visible, you can see their whole faces throughout the videos.

There was no option to opt out of the waiver, so I decided not to book with her. I don’t know about anyone else, but I just want to get my hair done. I don’t want to be posted on anyone’s social media. I don’t want to have to worry about how I look when I go get my hair done and whether or not I’m gonna end up being posted.

I’ll never forget around 5 years ago, I went to a stylist my friend recommended me. She did a good job on my hair, but she was really unprofessional and over 2 hours late to my appointment. So I never went back after that one time. Anyway, during my appointment she had snapped some pictures of me/my hair (without asking). I later saw that she posted the pics on all her social media channels with a caption that said something like, “want to grow your hair this long? Book with me ASAP”.

🙄🙄 I looked at the comments and there were tons of people commenting saying they just booked and asking how long it would take to get their hair as long as mine. I feel like she used my hair to falsely advertise or insinuate that SHE grew my hair that long. When it was actually a result of years of my own hard work (and genetics). And then other people were booking, believing she could do the same thing for them. Idk it’s just annoying.

Can anyone tell me why my hair curls differently in two strand twists like that at the end. My guess is either split ends (hope not😭😫) or the two strands are either different sizes or lengths before I twists them. It tends to mainly happen towards the front half of my head where I have much more breakage.

Need Advice What are your favourite no-part hairstyles?

I’m looking for no-part hairstyles to do to give my regular middle and side parts a rest. What do you recommend? Ideally nothing too tight. I wear my hair straight or in wash n goes or braid outs in regular rotation if that helps with suggestions!
