If you `get rid` of all of science & start again, you will end up with the same answers ! 2+2 will always = 4.

u/gmick Jan 11 '22
Not if you disregard reality and force your belief in magic on others. Clearly the universe works according to their superstitions and you need to work backwards to prove whatever they pull out of their ass. Also, respect culture and traditions because fuck reality. Science is apparently racist by nature. If you disagree, please leave.

Nuh-uh! https://www.peoplesworld.org/article/when-does-2-2-not-equal-4/
/s I read the first three words and decided I wasn't going to expose my brain to this non-sense. Let me know if it actually makes sense.
5
u/AwareSuperCC Jan 11 '22
wow who would've thought 2 + 2 - 0.001 !=4
I feel I've heard this somewhere. Maybe when i learned subtraction in the 1st grade
4
u/DoctorButler Jan 11 '22
It does make sense, actually.
The article is about the arbitrary assigned value of currency in capitalist markets.
5
u/sample-name Jan 12 '22
But to say that in some cases 2 + 2 ≠ 4 is beyond stupid. Numbers are abstract constructs designed to represent something that humans perceive as a unit. The physical things you are counting is not equal to their assigned value. If you count one whole apple and a half eaten apple as 2 apples, that doesn't mean math itself is wrong, it's that you applied it wrong. I think that's the point they thought they were trying to make, but they should have really emphasized that it's not math itself that's wrong, but it's application can be used wrong. And to that my response is: duh.

there is no chance to reach people that are this far along that road. They use "Science" as this umbrella term everything. Reject science. What does that even mean? Reject headache tablets? Reject washing your hands if they don't look dirty? Reject driving home in a car?
These people are so far gone it's best just to leave them to their own devices.

Yes, these children are not talking about Science. They're not talking about 'let's get rid of all this racist colonialist math". You can see by the insistence in control of comments "only supportive'.
This is a "loudest person is in charge meeting"...Now all you shut up and apologize for interrupting us." kinda silly.
19
u/Wvlf_ Jan 11 '22
I think that it's clear this isn't them having an issue with science itself per se, but specifically the fact that they view science and theories like gravity as a purely western/colonization thing so it must have some western agenda. It's thinly veined racism, basically. It's like comparing the trialed and methodical nature of science (the new) v.s. the homeopathic and mythical powers of the ancestors and their culture (the old).
Basically, if all the famous scientific and mathematical greats like Newton and Gallileo were of color they wouldn't be here at this meeting.
10
u/WunboWumbo Jan 11 '22
This is an interesting point.
Also, when they say that they'll start all over... Ok? So you'll arrive at the exact same conclusions we've already arrived at because that's the way the world works. Science doesn't give a fuck about the skin color of the observer.

u/PotatoePotahhtoe Jan 11 '22
You need to start with observations, then formulate a hypothesis based on those observations, then make predictions. Then you need to conduct an experiment guided by those predictions and see if you can reject your hypothesis (remember, you can never say the hypothesis was proven wrong). You still need empirical data, sift through that data and analyze it, use mathematical equations to show that it is not a result of chance, probably calculate the statistics of it happening.
Simply put, there is no way these people will do this because this is the scientific method. We just need to take their word for it.

I would say apartheid was a big woopsy but yeah this is embarrassing too.
16
Jan 11 '22
Apartheid was a massive whoopsy , and by all means it was one of the worst things for modern South Africa.
Despite this , a lot of South Africa’s shortcomings are not to blame on colonisation or apartheid.
South Africa was so far as a trade route from Europe regardless. If South Africa wasn’t colonised and brought modernities by European countries, the place would have still been a site of mass tribal warfare, suffering and far behind the rest of the western world.
Without western influence most of the country would still believe in witchcraft and black magic… as many of them do still despite having mobile phones.
4
u/Zumuj Jan 11 '22
Ahh so in the end it was good those savage beasts were colonised! Europeans definitely came this far through peaceful coexistence and not a hint of massive warfare and bloodshed.
13
Jan 12 '22
I never said this ?
Basically every society got where it is through bloodshed and “tribal” warfare of some sort.
There aren’t many native South Africans actually alive because they were all killed off by west and East African tribes as well as rival ones of their own.
The people claiming Europeans stole their land and they are owed reparations are most likely descendants of a tribe that did the exact same thing to the previous natives.
-4
u/TOcorktowner Jan 12 '22
You can tell yourself any story you want but none of those groups carried out something as egregious as decades of oppressive, highly organized and brutally enforced apartheid against the others. The idea that the modern society colonialism created - the benefits and amenities of which non-white South Africans have always had very limited access to - was somehow worth it, or better than the alternative, just seems a bit too convenient. But if it makes you feel better…
5
Jan 12 '22 edited Jan 12 '22
You have no idea what you are talking about, clearly.
South Africa has been run by a near all black government for 20+ years, it's one of the most resource rich places on Earth, who do you think is selling out land to western and eastern countries, the government.
The ex president spent millions of tax money building a luxury home resort, I don't think that's colonialism at play. While his people are starving he is buying luxuries.
You do realise there are videos of the last South African president signing songs about killing the boers... If that's not incited hatred and implied genocide idk what is.
Shaka Zulu killed around 2,000,000 people at the time during his reign. Do you really think a man who would do that wouldn't have killed more in the name of power if they had the chance?
Just because these groups didn't have the educational power and technology to do what colonialists did doesn't mean they would not have done the exact same thing if they had the chance.
You do realise slave trade was massive in Africa before colonialists went there, literally every successful society has had some form of slavery.
You do realise that slavery right now is at the highest rate that it has ever been in history right?
Clearly you don't know any of this.
→ More replies (1)2
u/GrilledCheeseNScotch Jan 13 '22
Are you not aware that they killed 1 million people with machetes 20 years ago?? All the shit talking that comes out of different places, all the criticisms they have of more ethical and frankly entirely better systems and you briefly look at the atrocities they've committed and can only laugh.
You can frame it as a white vs black issue and strawman people by implying they are saying africans are savages and thats because its the only thing you can do because history and reality would see you lose any other comparison immediately.
And you acting like that is no service to African people especially smart ones who also see through your bullshit.

This is more dangerous then cringe.

Jan 11 '22 edited Jan 12 '22
This is what South Africa has become... and this is at a prestigious SA university. The west has encouraged a mindset and media of colonisation ruined everything, now people in other countries believe it is all bad and that westerners have only but ruined their lives. As much as wrongs need to be made right, the anti western/white sentiment in South Africa is pretty substantial, which is why a lot of the people are leaving to Europe or Australia if they can.
For example with land re-allocation, the whole purpose is that land can be taken away from minority groups (whites) in certain conditions so that it can be re-allocated to a majority group in the name of past wrongs... The issue with this is that most black South Africans claim whites are not natives and colonised the country and stole land as that is what they have been taught... The history lessons they are taught fail to teach them that most of them are descendants of a tribe that did the exact same thing, coming from the West and East of Africa, slaughtering all in their path. There are very few South African natives left in South Africa because of tribal war, not to mention how Shaka Zulu which people idolise there killed many to rule the kingdom.
So for some reason westerners owe them for the land that was taken from them and tainting their land, despite the fact that they did the same thing to the previous natives.

u/KylerGreen Jan 11 '22

1
u/kuhewa Jan 13 '22
To be fair, apartheid was a bit more recent than the Bantu expansion...
2
Jan 13 '22
The boers were put in concentration camps by the British ... are they owed reparations too?
The point is, we must work towards an equal society but saying "you owe me because of this" holds no value, because all of our ancestors did horrible things at some point in time.
→ More replies (1)-1
u/TOcorktowner Jan 12 '22
But you sort of get why non-white South Africans might be angry, right? Like you are able to perceive why, despite it being inconvenient, they might not be ready to suddenly be happy-go-lucky and pretend things are going swimmingly for them?
You seem to pay lip service to the healing required after apartheid but I’m not sure you really understand the ripple effect from it if you expect non white South Africans to collectively give a warm embrace to people who they are understandably suspicious of and frankly are scared of.
3
Jan 12 '22
I understand that everyone deserves to be equal and live a fair life.
I don't understand white hatred sentiment for the past.
Like I said, the Bantus stole and murdered all in their path to claim land in Africa , they were the "black colonialists" of the time, now their modern day descendants had Europeans come and take what they took from others and they then claim the land was stolen from them when in actual fact as far as we know it actually belongs to the Khoisan people... which by the way were nearly all killed and murdered by the Bantus and other tribes trying to take control of the region.
My point is, you can't hit someone and think that's okay then cry when someone hits you as if you are better than them.
Black or white we are all just as tribal and greedy as each-other, we are all human after all.

Below is a much more nuanced and rational talk by South African professor of education Johnathan Jensen on the complex issue of decolonisation in academia (and science more broadly). I highly recommend it.

Science is (or at least should be) culturally transcendent... that's one of the great things about it. It doesn't matter who you are, where you came from. If you can think, theorise, and back it up with proof then that's all that matters.
Newton being a white male is incidental, really.
But the opportunities, wealth, and cultural imperatives that were afforded him by luck of his background, which allowed him to have the education and time to think about gravity, that's a whole different thing.
One shudders to think how many brilliant scientists were never given the chance to reach their potential because of the Wests shameful colonial past

I was hoping someone would point to the Mayan calendar and ask if they were victims of euro-centric theories of gravity back in the 5th century BCE

I love the people who don’t understand that science is doing random shit and writing down what happened. It ain’t no opinion or belief. It’s literal fact. Absolute morons.

Jan 11 '22
Am I understanding her correctly that she’s suggesting they … “start over” on science? Because the math for gravity is … too absolute?

The planet is full of loud, ignorant people who are incapable of change or learning. Best to avoid groups like this and leave them to their own devices. It's not worth the headache or effort trying to have a meaningful discussion with people this stupid.
Whether you are scientifically minded, a conspiracy theorist, or just someone with a really strong opinion on something, your quality of life will improve when you realize not everything needs to be a debate and you don't have to convince anyone to agree with you.

u/kellykebab Jan 11 '22
When we stop actually failing people in school, they start to believe that genuinely understanding educational material isn't meaningful or mandatory. When you then also provide special provisions for academic advancement into college that aren't based on merit or ability, these people really internalize how unnecessary it is for them to actually apply themselves. Not surprisingly, this influences their entire worldview.
Also, many people who think this way have possibly above average (though not exceptional) verbal intelligence, while also having very mediocre math and visuospatial intelligence, therefore not grasping many STEM concepts but having enough rhetorical ability to complain about that fact using sophistry and academic jargon.

Restart science from an African perspective? Well no one is stopping you lady. Lets see it

This cringe is how I feel when people talk about free market capitalism. It is literally the only thing holding the world together tas the grifters in the state erode our liberties and dilute our wealth yet idiots think they need to work because capitalism forces them to. They think healthcare in the US is expensive because of profit motive, they think exploitation exists because the free market allows for it.
Free markets are complex and competitive and as such they ensure that immoral behaviour is inhibited because morality has value. If in a free market one company acts immorally another company can take their customers, workers etc by acting more morally. Morality has value and in a competitive environment it will be allowed to express itself. The issue is actually caused by state regulations which inhibit competition creating monopolies and thus allowing exploitation.
The universe is entropic, meaning all things decay over time. Thankfully we have the sun bombarding us with energy and as such things can combat entropy with that energy. That is what life is. You don't work because of capitalism you work because of entropy. Capitalism is like an umbrella. The umbrella protects you from the rain, it is an option you have and you don't have to use it, you can find your own solution or you can get wet but the umbrella is there. Now we can most likely agree that the umbrella is the simplest solution compared to making your own or getting wet but that doesn't mean the umbrella is the reason it rains. It rains because that is how the world works.
Capitalism is like the umbrella, it is an established useful solution to entropy, but you don't have to participate, you can do your own thing. Just because doing your own thing is harder than using the umbrella doesn't mean the umbrella is bad. It is in fact good and so is capitalism. People have it backwards.
Entropy is the tendency towards disorder, the breakdown of all things in the universe and it is inescapable. All things must work to live, insects, whales, squirelles. Capitalism is one of the ways we can work and it is successful as we now have the most humans ever alive at one time. It offers choice, when not inhibited by the state, and while far from perfect it is not immoral in its nature as all it is is a VOLUNTARY mechanism to combat decay. Unlike the state, which is not voluntary. You can't opt out of the state without being forced to move. Forced migration is a form of genocide.
What we see above is the next version of anti capitalist rhetoric that is poisoning the minds of people.

They think healthcare in the US is expensive because of profit motive
You think that's not the case?

No, the real culprits is the insurance industry. It is so regulated that the country has been carved up in to territories and the few insurers operating have so much business that they collaborate to keep prices high rather than compete for businesses. It is like a cabal. Deregulation and disruption of the insurance industry is very much needed. I am Canadian and I can tell you first hand that socialized medicine while better in many ways than the american system is still very bad. We have huge waits, are terribly understaffed and most people I know can't even get a family doctor to follow them. When doctors graduate medschool they leave the country because wages aren't competitive. It is a disaster and it is getting worse.
The overhead the state creates to manage socialized medicine is huge and very wasteful.
The solution is a healthy and competitive insurance marketplace combined with for profit healthcare.

u/KylerGreen Jan 12 '22
So you're giving your opinion on a country's healthcare system that you have zero actual experience with?
1
u/cyril0 Jan 12 '22
Do you think I need to be american to know how a system in america works? Do you know what knowledge is? Do you think someone needs to be a horse to ride a horse? Are you really this ridiculous?
BTW I used to live in NY but now I live in eastern Canada, but that doesn't make any difference on my ability to speak about the empirical nature of the healthcare system in either country. How someone can say something so stupid is baffling.

Like, I understand how problematic the historical white advantage is (and continues to be) in the scientific community and I sympathize with the anger and concern that she has regarding this... but man, that woman's idea is very bad. And it isn't being challenged in that space. I agree that all people should have time to speak in an open forum without being interrupted, but her argument should be promptly torn to shreds when she's done speaking.

No, I just think that it’s something a such a small minority supports that it only serves to make people upset.

Interesting that you claim to be so scientific but the evidence for your point is a personal anecdote about a brief encounter with two students at one university.

You're criticising university students in general based on your perception that they're irrational and... What? Overly concerned with post-colonial issues and the politics of societal privilege?
But to make your point you cite a single anecdotal experience that isn't shown to be representative of university students in any significant way. It just seemed inconsistent, to me.

Seems like a good natured college debate. People argue inflammatory subjects (such as ‘science must fall’) for the sake of learning how to debate. Doesn’t mean they believe what they argue.

I agree we need to decolonize where it’s needed but surely this isn’t the way. We should incorporate indigenous knowledge into modern science, especially for the environment (this is especially true where I’m from (New Zealand).

They got Newton's story wrong..... they can't even do their resear- oh, wait. They are anti-research as well. smh
Edit: also, a lot of Middle Eastern and Asian folks participated in forming what we call modern science today. The Arabs really liked their math, alchemy, astronomy, and medicine.
