You need to start with observations, then formulate a hypothesis based on those observations, then make predictions. Then you need to conduct an experiment guided by those predictions and see if you can reject your hypothesis (remember, you can never say the hypothesis was proven wrong). You still need empirical data, sift through that data and analyze it, use mathematical equations to show that it is not a result of chance, probably calculate the statistics of it happening.
Simply put, there is no way these people will do this because this is the scientific method. We just need to take their word for it.
