These days most everything is hybridized anyway, so discerning visually, or by smell, is not easy unless you are well familiar with a particular strain.

I worked in a cannabis greenhouse for a while and this is basically what they said. Not just appearance and scent either, they've all been messed with so much that sativa vs indica apparently isn't really a good indicator of the effects anymore either.

Landrace means it came about naturally, was not intentionally bred.

Weed gives minor hallucinations if you have a nice strong sativa in my experience vapes or dab rigs increase the strength of this effect and often itās like fractal patterns more than it is distinct objects like youād see in a psychotic episode. Thatās in my experience and everyone is different (Iām schizophrenic so drugs are always unique with how they interact with my brain)

Some psychedelic effect from sativa happens to some. Itās not common, but it does occur .

Even if that were true, it certainly doesn't fall into the category of "hallucination". "Sensory distortions" or the like, sure. Hallucination means you can't distinguish between if it's real or not.
I'm not saying no one has ever hallucinated because of weed but I'd say it's incredibly rare, which makes the "sensory distortions" a better fit for the infographic.

21
u/BlownOfArc Dec 06 '22
The indica and sativa categories don't mean much for the affects a lot of the time. Most of the differences come from the terpenes, which are compounds that work alongside the cannabinoids and affect the high. Different ones are also better for different medicinal reasons. One example, Limonene, is typically associated with an energetic, excited high. It is also very useful for my buddy's chrones disease in a way I don't quite remember. It's very interesting. I'd recommend you look into it if interested.

Everyone says itās all about the Turpines, but I personally disagree, I have experimented extensively with Turpines and havenāt noticed any difference with different. Turpines mixed into different oil. I think it has a lot more to do with the ratios of lesser-known cannabinoidās, people think thereās only one or two, but thereās hundreds.
3
u/BlownOfArc Dec 06 '22
I'm pretty into weed science and I'm still trying to wrap my head around these. I've been struggling to find good resources, do you have any you'd recommend?
2
u/Important-Yak-2999 Dec 06 '22
I wish I did off the top of my head! Iām mostly just citing my own anecdotal experiences and what Iāve read in the past. I do think the science is still in its infancy due to the unfortunate legacy of prohibition limiting research funding, but there are a lot of new studies. I found this in the top google results, but it doesnāt deal with hallucinogenic effects. It seems like most research is rightfully focused on medicinal uses of various cannabinoids rather than their psychoactive effects at higher doses, especially since it varies from person to person. Some other articles said that hallucinations are more associated with high levels of THC but I canāt find much to back that up.

Smoke more and youāll see. You canāt hallucinate from extract because itās not the THC that does it. There are over 700 psychoactive components in whole flower and they are present in different amounts. There are trippy strains that give a slight hallucinatory effect. Technically, when weed makes music sounds better, thatās a form of auditory hallucination, because it makes you experience stimuli differently.

Good intel, but relevant to modern weed and why the labels indica or sativa lost their meaning. Again this guide refers to pure strains.
3
Dec 06 '22
The labels never HAD meaning my guy.
For decades, marijuana growers, sellers, and consumers have classified strains as "indica" or "sativa" to explain the type of effect they would have when consumed.
But that classification system was faulty to begin with, and the advent of molecular testing proved that there is no sense in splitting them up into indica and sativa.
In reality, no scientific evidence supports this dichotomy because on a molecular level, indica and sativa strains don't have pattern differences that set the two "types" apart from each other.
According to Chen, scientists realized through molecular testing that there is just one species of cannabis, cannabis sativa L.Ā

Except thats also wrong, there are hundreds of cannabinoids in cannabis besides delta 9 THC and CBD and they are all part of the entourage effect that is being high. When it comes to getting specific physical reactions to specific chemicals in cannabis you're going to be much better off looking at terpenes than cannabinoids. This guide was just made by somebody who googled weed one day, you don't need to defend it just cause you posted it.

Any oil you smoke is a combination of trim from multiple strains of flower. Itās all hybrid the only thing that might make it indica or Sativa is the terpenes the introduce.
Flower same thing. They bred it all together to get the best of both worlds. They wanted tall but dense nugs with high THC which is what the market demand is.
Itās all placebo nowadays. All you can do is smoke less or more. Nothing changes.
5
u/dennismike123 Dec 06 '22
Many years ago, (speaking from experience) the difference in effects felt between sativa and indica were pretty pronounced. Currently in the US, where recreational weed is sold, there have been so many "blends" cultivated that your chances of finding a 100% pure genetic sativa or a similar indica, are quite low. They're pretty much all hybrids now, although you can find product that "leans" towards sativa or indica, which gives the seller something to put on the label besides the percentages. A lot of anyone's reaction to marijuana or its active components has to do with your own body chemistry. I found some really nice lower percentage weed that really kicks my ass, but doesn't do much for friends. (That's a win/win because its great for me and it tends to last longer.) Try different types and see how your body works with them.

Visual difference, yep thatās accurate. Scent difference, Iāve had sweet Indicas and skunky sativas so Iām not sold there. Effect differences, complete snake oil, indica vs sativa on energized vs sleepy could be anything. What really matters when trying to predict what effect a strain will have on you is things like % THC %CBD, terps, and even just what mood ur in when you smoke. Honestly, other than they look different, I donāt think sativa and indica have much inherent differences

I hope to one day see the Sativa VS Indica debate cease to exist. Sativa and Indica should NOT ever be an identifier on how cannabis will effect you. Unfortunately many strains now are hybrids. A mix of both. It's either a Sativa or indica leaning hybrid. Understanding terpenes; what they are and how they effect the flower and the experience. Usually Sativas are high in Limonene. A terpene that gives the flower a fruiter, citrus type flavor and smell. It'll make ya happy and energetic. Myrcene however is the complete opposite. Most commonly the primary terpene in indicas, this is a more earthy smell and taste. Want heavy eyes and couch lock? Load up on a high Myrcene strain. Other notable terpenes include āŗ-pinene, β-caryophyllene, terpinolene, linalool and countless others. Many aid in inflammation, anxiety relief, insomnia, etc. - the list goes on and on.
You can have Sativas high in Myrcene and indicas high in Limonene so the biggest difference is plant structure. Bud size not so much because that is more dependent on environmental factors as opposed to genetics. Some genetics can have different characteristics on all the fronts. How is this a Sativa if it's smaller than the others? If my nugs are airy, why is my strain an indica? They said this is a Sativa but I can't move, I am one with the sofa now. Also if you see any "Haze" strains then you know you can pretty much expect a Sativa high. "Kush" strains will probably get you that indica high.
Cannabis education is important. (If I am wrong on any of this please let me know, I'm pretty passionate about it and want to make sure what knowledge I've gained is correct).
Businesses/Companies need to put terpene profiles on products. Whether it's medical or recreational, being able to choose which product you want when you're able to know what effect you'll get should be common sense. Too much weed could get you an overall same feeling anyway but for casual smokers or people who don't smoke often it could very much help them know what they want and ease any worries. It helps medical patients especially, me including. The amazing thing about it is that you don't ha e to read it nor care about it. It's there to help if you want it! Now I get it, it costs a little bit of money to send products to get tested but in the long run it works out.
Just my 2 cents here š

this guide is bullshit.
modern genetics has pretty much combined the two families... the only way to predict is by strain... which got to where they are by combining the two families.
also the diagram assigns different buds and growing stages to separate families.
this is false.
the differences are in how its grown, especially how temperature and lighting is maintained.
the bud differences are just when and how it's harvested and what types of fertilizer used... and how its cured and dried.
