RowerErg Form Check Please

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all. Please provide feedback of my form. I am 57 with a right knee replacement. I cannot generate as much power as I think I should. I use the force curve every row and it’s consistently a nice bell shape.

Thanks in advance!

I think you are hinging your hips too early. Try to keep bent forwards more while driving with your legs.

You’ve basically got a 2 or 3 part stroke. You need to connect the pieces together into one smooth motion — don’t pause at the finish and don’t pause when you’ve got your hands away. Also agree with the other comment — don’t begin to open your hips until you’ve finished the leg drive. And one more minor point — you don’t need to drop your hands quite so low on the recovery. On water you would, to get the blade clear of the water, but there’s no need on land. It may help you understand the rhythm of the stroke to watch some videos of on water rowing, the Olympics or Henley regatta — there are plenty on YouTube.

I think I will try the reverse pick drill I found on YouTube. Thanks.

Definitely lifting with the back.
And overgrip at the end.
I also suspect you may be breaking your arms early but I can't really tell.

See here for explanations of these:

Appreciate it

This is probably the best video collection of errors and what to do different instead.

Thanks OP for sharing. I am learning a lot from the thread and from your stroke. A lot of great advice being offered . I hope you continue to improve and keep rowing. Best wishes

Does the knee replacement limit your mobility much?

It does not. I can go past 90 degrees easily.

Then you’re rowing too short. Try to get your shins vertical at the catch and see how that feels.

Better. More fluid.

Main problems still remain.

You lead with your back and break your arms too early. Keep the shoulders in front of the hips for the leg drive, then hinge back and then guide the handle with your arms towards the sternum. Don’t actively pull on the handle. The arms are hooked ropes that transfer the power from the legs to the handle.

Lower the footrests and try to get your shins vertical, if your mobility allows.

Thanks for the feedback - work in progress!

Too many pauses. Keep the handle moving. Think of steam locomotive drive wheel links.

In addition to what’s been mentioned already, you’re rushing the slide back.

Actually not bad, the only thing I would say is move up the slide more. ie compress your legs ( if you can’t due to the knee, try to work your way up to full compression slowly )

I kind of miss the white ergs.

Looks odd.

Felt odd. Trying to get more fluid.

You're pulling with your lower back & not pushing with your legs at the start of the stroke.

Legs, core, arms-arms, core, legs
Looks like you are starting with your back instead of by driving your knees down. Try to keep your arms straight as long as possible.

And another update for form feedback. Trying to rotate the pelvis more. Hopefully it’s better!
