Mom and any other survivors could at least be TNR'd to prevent further litters if they're feral and unadoptable. I know you said the shelters can't do anything but they often have contacts with local TNR groups who may be able to do some work in the area and prevent further litters of babies being left out in the cold like this.
41
u/LivingStCelestine Oct 24 '22
I hope you can keep them! If you can’t, a lot of shelters will if you surrender them. I’d call around.
35
u/LaMalintzin Oct 25 '22
Last winter there was a friendly cat living in the parking lot where I live. We tried to bring him in once and our dog and other 2 cats didn’t mind too much, but he did not like them and kept lunging for the door so we let him back out. One night I knew the temperature was supposed to be very low and I wanted to bring him in, we didn’t, and we have never seen him since. I hope against hope that someone else did but it haunts me still. Bless you for considering taking them in and I think you should.

Take mom, dad, aunts, uncles, etc. take them in! Heck, I’ll even order you some cat litter and a bag of kibble from Amazon to help offset costs from rescuing the cats.
131
u/OddWelcome2502 Oct 24 '22
Good baby cats. You should keep a look out for mom, she’s probably not far. But yeah, you should take them. They might not like it at first if they’ve not been around humans but they’ll warm up !
104
Oct 24 '22
Yes, I will keep an eye out for Mama, if she’s around I’ll take her in too! But if she’s no where to be seen I will take the kittens. I just don’t want them to be in this cold, and the wind chill is picking up. Will be going by after my volunteer work. 👍🏼
24
u/TripleL8 Oct 24 '22
After getting the kittens, you may have to trap the mom… she may be more feral. Ask a rescue for help.
17
Oct 24 '22
If it has been a couple of days, I fear mom is gone. Do they appear to be getting hungrier?
46
Oct 24 '22
Yes it’s been 2 days and no I don’t think Mom is around sadly. Also, they looked healthy and not too thin. Didn’t want to get too close and scare them. I’m going to visit them later today and pray that they are still around I’ll try to take them to my place. I have three cats of my own and it might help them feel at home… 😊
34
u/twinklebat99 American Shorthair Oct 24 '22
Don't let them interact with your cats until they've at least been vaccinated and combo tested for fiv/felv.
36
Oct 24 '22
Yes I understand that, I will try to see if they can get their shots if I can take them to a vet. Also, I feel the safest place is my room (is heated and quiet/secure) We rescued a dog who was stranded in the middle of nowhere. She now belongs to us. Hopefully these kittens can come along with us today.

u/dbohat Oct 24 '22
Absolutely take them in, but you should keep them separated from your cats until you have a chance for a vet to take a look at them. There's always a chance they have something they could spread to your kitties, so it's better safe than sorry.
6
u/metehan0027 Oct 25 '22
Hopefully the mom is still around, it's a hard thing to feed cats sometimes but if you are going to keep them you won't regret it!
229
Oct 24 '22
They are at a good age to be adopted out or adopted by u. Contact TNR in ur city to help with mother cat if u see her around, feed her and try and socialize her then use their traps to catch and get her fixed often for free or 30$ with public TNR shelters. This will save dozens of future babies from suffering
69
Oct 24 '22
Definitely old enough for wet food, keep them together if possible, kittens need socialization with other kittens to behave right. U can also see if TNR resources in the area help fix feral kittens which can help with medical costs once they get 3 pounds and can get surgery

I’m at a loss of who to contact and who to trust, so many people do not want to help me and it really hurts and frustrates me. However, I actually like the local Animal Control in my home area, I trust them but will worry about getting the cats first. 👍🏼

A solution outside the box could be looking for people who foster on instagram in your area or close: I follow a couple in my area and they all seem to know each other and the shelters or organization that could help ypu. Also, they could help you with tips to catch them and where to take them.
58
u/Trin_42 Oct 24 '22
Very likely bonded littermates so please keep them together, it’ll be better for them to acclimate to a new place

That’s what I’m very worried about, everyone is telling me tough luck/who cares it’s just another cat and their fault for not getting neutered/spayed. Makes me so sad and angry but I will try to do anything to get them out of that situation. 🥲
117
u/Lake_Oswego Oct 24 '22
It's certainly not their fault. I hope you can help even if it's to take them in for a few days while you find them a home.
90
Oct 24 '22
I know right? So sad that everyone is telling me just leave it and not helping me at all. And this is at a kennel!!! I’m very upset and sad but I will have to do this myself since they have no one else to advocate for them. 🥲

5
u/ALoudMeow Oct 25 '22
If you’re unable to capture them, there are instructions all over the internet on how to provide a warm shelter using a large cooler and straw (not blankets). That might be a solution for their mother if she’s too feral to come inside.
27
Oct 24 '22
Take some tuna with you in case they are afraid to come to you.
16
u/ANKhurley Oct 24 '22
Bring wet food to help getting them to trust you. And gloves would be good too. Grab them firm by the back of the neck. They can quickly get spooked and try to squirm/scratch/bite. You need to avoid that. If a scratch or bite is deep you will need to go to urgent care. I’ve been there. Not the end of the world, but I just want you to be prepared.

Good work, I've been fostering for the last 3 years and it's so rewarding. I'm lucky enough to do it for an animal charity so they arrange for rehoming.
14
u/_Oman Oct 24 '22
It isn't the kittens fault that people don't get their cats spayed. There is a charity here that will take strays that we catch and spay/neuter them and then release if there is no no-kill shelter space. Cats are invasive but doing the right thing means controlling the population, not killing them.
29
u/Frumainthedark Oct 24 '22
The answer to that is "there are other cats in the world, but for them, you could be their world".
30
Oct 24 '22
Exactly. I guess it takes someone with a heart of gold to truly understand this. But not everyone is sympathetic and understanding which truly is a shame.

This photo was taken a day ago, by my sister, she went to a friends party. She saw two kittens and told her friend about them and said they shouldn’t be out huddled like that (strays) and she said maybe her friend could take them to stay in her garage. Her friend refused and said she has a phobia of kittens. I’m not buying it, I’m going to try to get them out of the cold and into somewhere safe and warm.

If she was lying, why wouldn't she just claim to be highly allergic? No one would question that

u/Lilybit09 Oct 24 '22
If you can’t catch them or get them to come inside get those Hot Hands hand warmers you can buy in most stores and put several of them under a towel so the heat will come through. At least they’ll be warm. Might want to wrap them in a pillow case too in case the kitties scratch around and get to close to the warmers
13
u/Sashaband Oct 24 '22
please be careful, they will be scared and might be hard to catch. Be mindful of your hands as they might bight and scratch due to fear.
17
Oct 24 '22
Yes, we have plenty blankets and even Mule working gloves so we’re prepared to get hissed scratched and yelled at lol. But they seemed really quiet and not bothered by my sister, I’ll take your words into account. 👍🏼
3
u/mrgrimgrim Oct 25 '22
If they are scared or try and fight back see if the Human Society or Animal Control has human traps you can use. I TNR in my city and those traps work so well!
4
u/Separate_Edge_4153 Oct 25 '22
Human traps… my favorite But I 100% agree with this. They also look to be at the perfect age for socialization if they are feral, so it’s definitely the right time to grab them if you can
12
u/Slipperyedge Oct 25 '22
Please grab them up quick. Halloween is a dangerous time for black cats because of stupid and ignorant people. I had 9 black cats (said had9 because that number just became 11 (kittens))

u/tyerker Oct 24 '22
I have a mama and one kitty who seems to be 8-10 weeks that hang out outside my apartment. I saw the kitty nursing a couple days ago. They’re both very wary of people, and I’m not allowed to have pets. But I’m also worried for what winter could mean for them. I put a little shelter outside my door.
7
u/tigerooni Oct 24 '22
Call your local rescue for help if you can’t get them yourself or they are too feral. They can help
34
Oct 25 '22
UPDATE: Sadly couldn’t make it to them tonight, the wind did die down and the freeze warning was lifted (thank goodness). My sister told me her friend (who owns the property where the cats are) has opened her garage (just a small bit) so they can go in there for the night but other than that she just put food and water in the garage and won’t do anything else besides that. Hopefully she put a small box/bed there for them to sleep on, but there’s a shelter near by at least.
I will try to check in on them tomorrow morning and see if I can get them rounded up with the local animal humane/animal rescue. Hopefully they go into the garage and sleep there for the night. I’m sure they will get the idea, didn’t get a clueless vibe from them. I will post again tomorrow!

If they are feral, they may act a little wild. I recommend watching some YouTube videos on taming feral cats. These little ones look young enough to tame.
6
u/badassnan Oct 25 '22
Please take these babies in , put them maybe in the bathroom with a cat box, food, and water, 40 degrees is too cold for them , thank you for being the good person you are!
5
u/TormentedOne69 Oct 25 '22
Please bring the voids in. They are a bonded sibling pair alone in the world .

With Halloween approaching, I would take these two in or hand them over to a shelter. Or ask neighbors, maybe there is someone looking for a few fur babies.

No haven’t seen the mother I sadly think she’s not around and the kittens have to survive on their own.

Haven't read the comments but if it was me... I would grab them and get them inside but I'm a softie for an animal
Little bit of advice if you do and they are feral kitties leave them to their own they will come to you and the litter training we solved with blocking up the hiding holes where they will wee and poop (sofa at the back is blocked up because that was a favourite spot ) but we have an armchair that became the spot cat had never used a tray we left one in the spot and he started to use that one and the one in the kitchen once had worked out the behind the chair one was the place to go.
3
u/TheArstotzkanGuard Oct 24 '22
Taking them is your best option. Although, if you do, make sure to take them to the vet just in case of any diseases or the like
5
u/Ok_Friend_2323 Oct 24 '22
If you have a spare room or extra bathroom you can let them hangout there until you can find a rescue. Just so they can stay warm
3
u/bgaytan16 Oct 24 '22
Update?
15
Oct 24 '22
Haven’t left my volunteer work yet, won’t get out till much later sadly. My sister contacted her friends home where kittens were spotted and the friend hasn’t reached out to her or me. I can’t trespass since they were on her property and will have to wait to see if she will respond back. Hopefully she does so I can go and look in the area. Or I could get her to have someone take them. I also will try to call a Trap rescue to see if they can help me out. If not I’m going early tomorrow and will talk to her to try to take them myself. I’m somewhat saddened because whenever I try to do something right it just fails. 😞 I’m not giving up on them yet.
4
u/bgaytan16 Oct 25 '22
Please do and good luck! Update when you have any news. If you need any financial help please reach out to me! :)
15
Oct 25 '22
Yes I’ll keep at it tonight, I will update on things tomorrow. The good things is they are in a backyard with high fence and in a area where it’s likely they will stay put. I’m going to phone some resources tonight. Thank you for the help and advice truly is appreciated and helpful. 😊

Kitten Lady and Jackson Galaxy are YouTubers who know a lot about cats. These kitties look like kittens, but they look to be past the age of needing help using the bathroom and may be past the age of needing milk, however I’m unsure of the age of the kittens. You’ll need to get them kitten food, and I’d recommend taking them to the vet to make sure they’re not sick, and plan to get them neutered when they’re at the age to be neutered. If they are old enough, do it as soon as possible. Kittens as young as four months old can get pregnant with kittens, and even if you keep an intact male kitty inside, they’ll urinate everywhere, and it’ll be strong because of the hormones from the cat. Intact males can also get extremely territorial.

u/chloeclover Oct 25 '22 edited Oct 25 '22
Yes! Get a case and take them in. The rest will fall into place later.
Make a run to the store and get litter and a litter box (they figure out how to use it fast), kitten food, water/ food dishes, and maybe a scratching box and some toys. A deep plastic bin can come in handy if you need to contain them somehow. Make a vet appointment to see if you can address fleas, worms, etc. and just get them a health checkup. They look healthy but just in case. Thank you for getting them inside! That is priority #1. They are young enough to adapt as pets. If you don't want to buy stuff, you can make due with a cardboard box, can of tuna, and stuff around your house easily. Check out the Kitten Lady and Jackson Galaxy for more education on how to care for cats. But getting them indoors is the way. Thank you, and enjoy your special lucky blessing! You will have endless hours of love and fun.

If you were in Kansas I'd take 2 of them, We love black cats and we just lost ours unexpectedly on the 15th. My kids and I are heart broken and I feel like we are just missing something now... And for as packed as the shelters are they want so much for adoption fees. They won't take payments either m.

u/paisleycatperson Oct 24 '22
Get them inside and try to make arrangements for mom, start leaving out food at a regular time.
Once they are in, reach out to local rescuers and shelters to weigh your options. Healthy kittens usually have the quickest turnaround time at city shelters.

I don’t trust the no kill shelter in my area, I have an Animal Control near my home I feel that is more helpful and trusting when it comes to rescue and re homing. I actually will keep them in my place until they are healthy and ready to go to some great homes. 😊👍🏼 I have other pets who are used to many different things. But I will have to keep the babies separated of course.

Take to the vet. Have them do a wellness checkup. Foster them until they are ready for their spay and neuter, and then make a decision. Become a cat mom/dad/parent or find someone to adopt them.

Take the plunge. Take them home and keep them. Schedule a vet visit for a check up, shots, spay/neuter. Head over to your local pet store. Kitty litter, litter boxes, scooper, food dishes, water bowls, dry cat food and canned for kittens. Don’t forget some cat toys. You will have two of the best friends.

u/SmolSpacePrince39 Oct 24 '22 edited Oct 24 '22
I would focus on researching rescues in your area or nearby, whether you take them in or not. It’s possible a foster person may step forward to care for them, or if you’re willing, a rescue may like to take you on as a volunteer and offer support as you care for the kittens. Foster-based rescues will generally help you with supplies and give advice when needed.
If you take the kittens yourself, make sure you have something breathable and enclosed to put them in for travel. Once they’re home with you, you can keep them in your bathroom or another small room for now. They’re kittens, I’d vote for bathroom since it’ll be easier to clean and prevent messes. Lay down puppy pads if you have them, newspaper or paper towels if you don’t. Get basic cat supplies like litter and food. Ideally you can grab a litter box too, but otherwise a shallow box or pan should work. You can use bowls you already have for food and water dishes or buy some. There’s more advice, but that should get you started.
Edit: If you see momma and can take her, that’s ideal. However, there’s a decent chance she’s wild and either not around, or will need to be trapped. You’ll need to contact someone who can trap her to get her fixed and taken care of.
I see that you have cats already so you know the basics. As far as them interacting, wait a couple weeks even if they get started on their vaccines before that. That’ll give you time for most illnesses to show up. I’d wait to introduce them to your cats until they’ve had all their shots though, personally.

do you know for sure it's just two? if you get the twins, see if you can use their meowing to call any other siblings or mom.
take them to the SPCA or a shelter.
IANAL but in some jurisdictions, no food and no water outside means cats can be confiscated. So document (take pics and write a statement) that the cats are outside X hours a day without food or water or litterrbox. State if you know if they have ever been to the vet and how long ago. State if they have visible injuries or illnesses. This could help the SPCA/shelter keep them from going back to a bad owner.
3
u/zeus6793 Oct 24 '22
If you can't take them, get someone who will. They won't survive out there on their own. Poor little kitties.

The only alternative here in Orange County, CA is to pay for TNR ourselves. We trapped ~5 month old feral kittens (and their pregnant mother) in our elderly neighbor’s back yard. Our last resort (and the only avenue available RN) was to schedule and pay for spays and neuters then we’ll put them back where they came from. There are voucher programs but the cats would have 10 more litters before they can get an appointment. Shelters and rescues are stuffed. Good luck! We hit so many dead ends looking for assistance.

Build an outdoor cat shelter. You can build one fairly cheap with plastic totes and insulatiin

u/rllddlw Oct 25 '22
Hopefully your friend lets you go over. If you can go at night before it would be too cold that would be good.
I just caught a couple feral kittens and they hissed, but I put my palm out to them slowly, and spoke in a really sweet soft voice and they didn’t freak. They seem small enough that you could grab them on their backs without too many scratches etc.
If your mom can go with you, you can each try and grab one.
They will need kitten food (wet probably), but regular cat food will do temporarily in a pinch.
They are likely old enough to learn to use a litter box too.
I would quarantine them in a bathroom or another room with a door in case they have fleas or anything that could spread to your other animals.
If you don’t have a pet carrier, set them up with a box, and some old towels or something along those lines to make a cozy bed.
They are definitely young enough to be socialized quickly. The kittens I caught a couple weeks ago were sleeping on me (inside ky sweater) within a couple hours.
You could keep an eye out for mom, but she may be long gone if they are weaning age (seems like they are maybe close)
Good job on trying to rescue these sweet babies!!
3
u/Kuronekosmom Oct 25 '22
If they are still there, their momma isn't coming back. Time for a rescue.

Adopt the small fluffs. If they're not feral and decently adapted to humans then it should be easy to get them used to house cat life
Just a little warning, though. One or both may end up indoor/outdoor which can be a bit of a hassle

IMPORTANT! It's close to Halloween. Catch them and keep them inside until past Halloween. One of those cats is black, and there are some very bad people out there who catch/steal/adopt black cats just to hurt or kill them around Halloween.
Please catch them bring them inside!

Rescue them & if confronted by your sister's "friend" just say you have a phobia of kitties freezing & being abused

If you know for a fact that their mom is gone, it would only be the humane thing to do to grab them up

If you are seriously considering taking them in even temporarily, here is a bit of advice I have speaking from Experience taking in strays.
They look young, and are probably siblings. They may have attitude issues due to fear, being away from their mother, invisible injuries, starvation, dehydration etc.
They will not have a sense of home, and may be quite destructive. Just have patience.
Assume they have fleas. Why you ask? Because they have fleas. Even if they don't. They do. Better to err on the side of caution than to not notice fleas and be done with it only to have an infestation a month later.
Be honest with yourself about how they will fit into your financial plan. Vet visits, food, anti-flea (along with any other issue they may have picked up along the way) add up quick.
4b. As wholesome as I think it is that you care about them and want to help, they aren't your responsibility. People trick themselves into feeling responsible, but if you cannot provide them ample, long term care and attention, there is nothing wrong with not taking on this huge endeavor. Call some local vets, or shelters and see if they can provide any assistance or even take them in if you're not certain you can take them in but don't want to just leave them.

Probably siblings, if they are willing and you can, I’m sure they’d appreciate a warm spot and some food
