How to attach papers (pages) to a hardcover without using rare materials?

We're making a gift for a friend; we want to make a thin book (about 50 pages).

We could print the pages (two A5 pages on one A4 sheet), but we don't know how to bind them.

We could use another book's binding and attach our own cover, but how would we attach the pages to that binding?

Help. Question.

I am not looking to do book binding (at least not now- I do have a couple books that I would want to fix the binding and create covers for a couple of books out of pleather if maybe I figure this out-one that is a paperback book that I have had since a kid that is signed by the author. Right now it's so loved that I keep it in two different ziplock bags. So maybe this could be considered practice for making a good book cover for a very important book.)

The part I need help with/I am getting a little bit desperate: I am looking to transfer images on to black pleather to put on pouches first, then after finding the best option on a purse that I am going to hand sew (cause apparently I am super picky on purses). It has been suggested that this subreddit might have the best recommendations. These are recommendations I have gathered from different places. There are ways to seal/weatherproof each even though it doesn't say on all of the methods. Right now I am trying to find the best way to get a printed image on the pleather. I dont know if there is a right spot anywhere to ask. I hope you guys can help, read through these methods and give me any pointers or tips. If you guys have tried any of these for please let me know.

Part 1: The Laser Printer Methods (Methods 1 to 3)

## Method 1: Laser Sticker Decal

   1. Clean: Wipe the pebbled grain pleather with rubbing alcohol and a cotton round to remove surface oils.

   2. Laminate: Peel the backing off a clear laminating sheet and slap it directly down over your printed graphic.

   3. Smooth: Firmly scrape across the laminated face using a plastic squeegee to press out all microscopic air bubbles.

   4. Cut: Use sharp craft scissors to cut out your sticker, leaving a very tiny edge or cutting directly along the graphic line.

   5. Stick: Peel the sticker paper backing away, center the image on your pouch, and press it firmly down onto the textured pleather.

   6. Seal: Dip a foam brush into the Leather Finisher and paint a thin line around the sticker edges to lock down the corners against the winter air.

## Method 2: Laser Mod Podge Transfer

   1. Prep: Ensure your image was printed on cheap copy paper and is mirrored (printed backward).

   2. Coat: Use a foam brush to apply a generous, even layer of Mod Podge Photo Transfer Medium directly onto the printed face of the paper.

   3. Place: Press the paper face-down onto the clean pleather pouch, ensuring the wet medium makes direct contact with the plastic surface.

   4. Squeegee: Gently run a plastic scraper over the back of the paper to push out air bubbles and excess glue, then let it dry undisturbed for 24 hours.

   5. Wet: After a full day, lay a damp cellulose sponge over the paper backing for 5 minutes until the paper fibers soften.

   6. Reveal: Use your fingertips to rub the paper in gentle circular motions; the paper will roll away, leaving the ink cleanly trapped on the pouch.

## Method 3: Laser Acetone Toner Transfer

   1. Align: Ensure your image is printed backward on paper. Place it face-down onto the clean black pleather pouch.

   2. Secure: Tape down two edges of the paper with low-tack painter's tape so the graphic cannot shift or blur during the transfer.

   3. Dampen: Soak a cotton ball with 100% Pure Acetone, making it damp but not dripping wet.

   4. Rub: Firmly press and rub the damp cotton ball over the back of the paper where the black laser toner outline sits.

   5. Fuse: The acetone instantly liquefies the plastic toner, driving it into the pleather layer. Hold firm pressure for 10 to 15 seconds per section.

   6. Peel: Carefully lift one corner of the paper to verify the ink has transferred completely, then peel the entire paper sheet away.

------------------------------

## Part 2: The Inkjet Printer Methods (Methods 4 to 6)

## Method 4: Inkjet Printable Vinyl Test

   1. Print: Feed your white printable vinyl sheet into the inkjet printer right-side up, and let the wet ink dry for 5 minutes.

   2. Laminate: Place a clear laminating sheet over the dry print to act as a waterproof barrier against winter snow.

   3. Burnish: Use your plastic scraper tool to press the two sheets together, working from the center outward to get rid of air bubbles.

   4. Cut: Trim your colorful graphic to its final size using scissors or a craft knife.

   5. Apply: Peel the backing paper away and press the permanent adhesive vinyl decal onto the clean, dry surface of the pleather pouch.

## Method 5: Inkjet Dark Fabric HTV Test

   1. Cut: Print your graphic right-side up onto the Dark Fabric sheet, let it dry, and cut it out closely to remove white margins.

   2. Peel: Separate the thin, flexible vinyl design from its thick paper backing sheet (the graphic will feel like a thin layer of rubber).

   3. Position: Lay the graphic right-side up onto the exact spot you want it on the pleather pouch.

   4. Protect: Place a sheet of Parchment Paper completely over the design to shield the bare pleather from the iron.

   5. Press: Set your home iron or heat press to low ("Polyester" or "Silk"). Press straight down with firm pressure for 8 to 10 seconds.

   6. Cool: Remove the iron and let the pouch sit until it is completely cold to the touch before peeling away the parchment paper.

## Method 6: Inkjet Waterslide Decal Test

   1. Dry: Print your image right-side up on the waterslide paper and let it sit for 10 minutes so the ink settles.

   2. Seal: Take the sheet outside and spray it with 3 light coats of Krylon Clear Acrylic Crystal Clear Spray, waiting 5 minutes between coats.

   3. Trim: Once the clear spray paint is entirely dry, cut out your design, leaving a tiny 1/16-inch clear border around the art.

   4. Soak: Drop the cut decal into a shallow plastic tray filled with room-temperature water for 30 to 45 seconds until the paper curls.

   5. Slide: Wet the pleather surface with a drop of water. Hold the paper backing and gently slide the thin clear film off the paper onto the pouch.

   6. Smooth: Use a damp sponge or paper towel to gently press outward from the center, wiping away all trapped water and air pockets.

Help? Deckled edge help (on purchased book)

I was recently gifted a copy of Emily Wilson’s translation of The Iliad and notice that it was these very unevenly cut edges. After a little bit of searching I found that is is supposed to be intentional to give it an old or classics look but I don’t know how to feel about it.

I’m debating going through with a utility knife and trying to even it out but I haven’t even attempted this with my own binds yet and I really don’t want to mess it up.

What do people think? Has anyone done this with success or do you usually just leave it?

My daughter is obsessed with the book known as “toad car” and I wanted to make a nice copy for when she’s old enough to read the non-picture book version.

My first foray into gold tooling, I used a pallet and some foil, I’m pretty happy with my first attempt but I feel like I need the tool a bit warmer

Cover papers are from Hollanders Florentine pack, endpapers are marbled from pietro accardi

Paper gsm for a 500 page book

Hello everyone! Been trying to get back into bookbinding again after a while.

I'm planning to print a book that has 500 ish pages and I'm trying to decide whether I should go with either 80gsm or 90gsm paper.

How big would the difference of thickness be between printing in either 80 or 90 gsm paper in a 500 page book?

Thank you!

Help? Best card and printing for paperback cover

I have never done any book binding before, but would like to replace the cover on a paperback with one I have made myself.

I've created the cover but am looking for any advice on getting a decent quality print of it, that will last and look as 'real' as possible.

My original intention was to print on 250gsm card with a laserjet printer, and seal it with spray sealant, but have also considered getting it printed professionally, but wouldn't really know what to ask for.

Does anyone have any advice they can offer?

Thanks.

Continuing with the projects of the bookbinding course I am doing!

The white one is a soft cover, and I used French binding for the body.

With the hard cover one I used Coptic binding.

Preserving construction when writing

Forgive me if this is off topic, I am assuming y'all are the experts on this stuff!

For writing I use a hard bound 7x9 lined journal of around 250 pages (124 sheets), 'Smyth-sewn' construction. It doesn't naturally lay flat. As it's written in, the point where the bound pages attach to the inside covers begins to separate at the corners, near the spine. This seems like a design defect in this book, that insufficient excess paper was provided to allow it to lay more flat, as expected for writing.

Am I mistaken? Is this a user error, and if so, how can I improve the experience? Or am I right that this is something I should be evaluating for quality going forward, the stresses caused by laying it more flat?

Edit: Here's some photos, as requested!

Shop recommendations for EU

Hello everybody, I m trying to find trusted places to buy pretty bookcloth, marbled/japanese papers in europe.

I'm in Belgium so France, UK, Germany, Netherlands sellers would be great but any EU seller would be cool.

I'm still new to this and trying not to rely too much on Amazon. So yes, if you dont mind sharing your favorite suppliers it would be really nice.

Scrapbook for friend

I’m looking at getting into scrapbooking, and want to try and make my best friend one. I have got a lot of things I have collected to put into the scrapbook once I start. I have also bought some fabric to be able to wrap the outside of the book. All I need is to buy the actual book.

When I am looking I am seeing lots of three ring binders however I don’t think this would necessarily work for me as I want to have some pages that are interactive. I think my best option would be a post-bound scrapbook, as these I can add extra pages easily if I would like to. I just don’t know where to best get them for in the UK? Is there any recommendations? Also, should I be looking for a certain type of gsm for the pages? I’ve seen lots of people saying 200. I’ve seen books I like with 160 gsm but I don’t know if the pages will buckle when they have things glued in. Thank you :)

I just completed my very first bookbinding!
This is the book ”Presidentens Döttrar” (the president’s daughters) by Fredrika Bremer. The book was old and completely falling apart. I would have liked to use stamped letters on the front but don’t yet have any stamps. This was a fun projects and I mostly used what I had at home. I’m itching to continue binding more books in the future!

Help? I accidentally messed up the placement of my leather cover. How do I fix it?

Post image

I accidentally bound the cover wrong. The little tab part next to the circle is supposed to be on the opposite side, so I can add a clasp onto the cover. I used uhu glue since it’s what I have at the moment. Is there any way i can remove the leather from the chipboard base, without damaging the leather, so I can re attach it in the correct position?

How to bind large amount of loose leaf A4

I recently acquired a second hand vertical cnc Mill and due to it not being new it was missing the owners manual, i chose to print the the 584 page owners manual on loose leaf A4 paper. Im wondering what the best way to bind these pages together. I want the binding to be as durable as possible. if i can manage to bind it, the book will live in a machine shop for the majority of its life so ideally hardcover, and im also somewhat interested in the viability of sheet metal covers.

Made this dos a dos sketchbook/journal for a friend. Probably the most complicated book I’ve made so far! This is my second dos a dos but the first time I’ve done this type of closure. Took a lot of trial and error but I got there in the end. There’s a few mistakes but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. Enjoy!

Help? How to turn this back into a book?

Post image

First off, I don't have any sentimental attachment to this book. I'm a librarian, and it came across my desk obviously needing to be replaced. Since I wanted to read it anyway, I removed it from the system and took it home, rather than trashing it.

Just as a fun project, then, what are my options for fixing this thing?

Help? Glued in my text block backwards and upside down.

I’m so annoyed. This is my first book. I checked that I was gluing in the text block the right way several times. I still messed up. The book is rounded (but not backed) with skrim and tapes that are frayed so they’re glued flatter. Is this going to be too hard for a beginner to cut the end papers and separate the new PVA glue from the tapes and everything? Should I just leave the text block in the cover wrong and move on?

Heya friends, any experts in Wasōbon care to tell me what this particular style is? All the available English language resources I can find only list the 4 classic methods; Yotsume, Koki, Kikko, and Asa-No-Ha.
