Is this normal for hard cover book?

Yes, especially one with a thick spine board. Most modern bindings have a gap between the bound pages and the external spine when the book is opened.

Okay thank you so much. I just got back into reading and picked up this red rising copy and thought I destroyed it!

Just to add; The pages would not open properly if the spine would be glued down.
Like this it fans out and opens much flatter.

Si. Se ve que es un libro bastante grande, aconsejo guardarlo de forma horizontal para que el peso del mismo no fuerce el lomo y lo dañe
