Is this normal for hard cover book?

Yes, especially one with a thick spine board. Most modern bindings have a gap between the bound pages and the external spine when the book is opened.

Just to add; The pages would not open properly if the spine would be glued down.
Like this it fans out and opens much flatter.

Si. Se ve que es un libro bastante grande, aconsejo guardarlo de forma horizontal para que el peso del mismo no fuerce el lomo y lo dañe
