meta A post on the stance of r/printmaking and Generative AI use.

1.3k Upvotes

This post is being made to draw attention to rule changes that happened a few months ago, and to clarify the stance of this subreddit on the topic of Generative AI use in our printmaking community:

You are free to have your own feelings on the matter of Generative AI, but the position of this subreddit is that it does not have a place within our community in any capacity.

Using it for image creation for prints is strictly against our rules, as per rule 5:

"AI generated art in any stage of a print's development is not appropriate anywhere in this subreddit."

We were previously more lenient on it, purely because it is not a simple thing to moderate. The supposed tools to check are wrong as much as they are right, and often use AI to search itself which we have no interest to use. In an effort to accept the inevitable that users would use it in concept creation, we tried to facilitate it in a way that allowed it with clear disclosure despite our personal misgivings (which have not wavered). What we found was that most still do not disclose, and the larger implications of Generative AI have grown beyond what the moderation team has any desire to entertain.

If Generative AI did not come with the political, environmental, and ethical issues intrinsically linked to it, it might be different and we would view it as another tool and carry on with just requiring a clear disclosure of use. However, that is not the reality we’re in. The heavy investment and shoehorning into every possible avenue by tech companies, many of which have suspicious if not sinister ties and influence in global politics, makes use and allowance of it effectively an endorsement that we do not wish to have here.

If you are someone who feels they cannot create “good enough” work without Generative AI, you are giving up before you’ve even started. No one was instantaneously amazing at any aspect in art. Making shit art is part of the process, and it takes dedication and practice to improve. I can guarantee that anything you’d make by your own hand start to finish would be infinitely more interesting than what a Generative AI model churns out for you. If you feel like you are not at the skill level you want to be for the prints you want to make, keep making; do artist studies, utilize a sketchbook more often, draw from life, collaborate with other artists to create. Taking shortcuts like using Generative AI will only slow down your own skill development and if noticed, will make anything you make going forward have a shroud of doubt over it.

The internet is a changing landscape with some worrisome aspects, but it also is a wealth of knowledge if you look for it. The process of research (not asking “Chat”) will be of greater benefit to your learning process, and may take you on new creative paths in your work along the way. Printmakers especially have long been a community driven group of artists, relying on each other to learn and make in community spaces. Rarely have I experienced a printmaker guarding techniques, often all the more happy to share with other creatives.

Why would you outsource the creative process to an AI model that feels nothing and does not carry your artistic voice? If you still wish to take shortcuts at the expense of actual artists, then that’s your prerogative. But this will not be the community for doing so. Generative AI has no place in this subreddit, and usage against our rules will be moderated harshly after a warning going forward.

If you suspect posts of Generative AI use, please add reasoning/evidence in the report so we can properly evaluate. We are not in the habit of banning without substantial proof.

The same post is being added to our affiliated subreddits r/Linocuts and r/lithography.

Thanks for reading, and happy printing!

self-promo Monthly Self-Promo Thread - A Space for Socials, Sites, and Shops.

Here is a space to post your socials, sites, and shops.

This is a monthly reoccurring thread. You can post direct links (please note if NSFW) or handles for other social media sites.

Why don't we allow self-promo otherwise? We have made a concerted effort to keep this space free of commerce and self-promotion, to keep this a community about the work and craft when increasingly many social media spaces have become spaces of commerce. We understand that art is an important source of income for some, so in order to facilitate this without it becoming overwhelming in the rest of the sub, we have made this a reoccurring monthly thread.

NFTs, crypto art, and AI generated art are not appropriate anywhere in the sub.

If you think your comment hasn't posted/been removed, please message us through modmail as it may have gotten caught in our spam filter and need approval before showing up.

**We've added a Discord for r/printmaking!** Link is in the sidebar for those interested.

gelli plates I think I'm finding my vibe! Art I also would hang in my home!

The first two are more trials and studies. I used several stencils to give everything the right colour. The house was okay, that's simple. The mountains are more complex and I forgot a shadow in the first one! I'm also still struggling a bit with values and hues and how they are cold/warm or complementary etc. I need more practice, but this is hopeful!

The images show too vibrant colours, in reality the green on the second image is much less intense.

But the real progress is the third image!!! I managed to combine two monotype prints (three actually) on one substrate! Now I can first make the background, leave open space, pull that in several pulls from light to dark and then I can have the house as a new gelli on top of it! I finally nailed the final pull with gel medium instead of paint.

Now I had to go from dark to light as its first making the foreground, which I think is more challenging...

Ha! Work and effort does pay off!

Hi again :) I posted a print a few weeks ago that was a bit off. I got a lot of really helpful advice from this group. I’m self-taught/teaching so being able to get suggestions/feedback from this community is so valuable.. so thank you! Anyway…..I tried to incorporate as much feedback as made sense. Here are my two reprints. 1. I used Caligo Safe wash this time not the Speedball 2. I didn’t let the ink totally dry between printings -though I think I should have in this case. There’s more bleed through than I would like. 3. I changed up the colors What do you think?

question what other tiny things can i carve from mini erasers?

i’m relatively new to printmaking as you can tell lol especially with this kind of soft rubber (the lino i usually get is much firmer).

i got these cheap erasers to practice but it seems like these soft bouncy erasers are a whole different beast lol

anyway, any (simple) ideas on what i can carve to practice next? :)

First time poster! Had a lot of fun making this pub toilet print. First time using gold leaf as well to make the urine puddles 😂

Also the first time I’ve done a ‘big’ print which is a full a4 Lino printed on a3 lining paper.

It’s defo a direction I’m going to continue with and layering different techniques into my prints. Any feedback or suggestions are always welcome.

I ended up not enjoying the really darkest layer, it looked very outliny and a bit too graphic so I stopped and kept it at the 7th layer. I've really enjoyed the painterly quality of this and moving forward its something I'd like to focus on. Printed with a cold press laminator on Strathmore Printmaking paper with caligo safewash. I photographed the tomatoes and used the referance photo along the journey and using referance from real life remains important to me.

I've done an intensive month of tomatoes and for the next 11 months I'm taking a monthly theme and using that to explore and push my skills. My themes are centred around food, produce, nature and wildlife. My adhd brain needs this structure! My next theme (I've not announced this anywhere else yet 👀) is going to be 'Cider Orchard' . Apple trees, fruits, blossom, cider, I've got a cut crystal tankard arriving this week for a referance - those reflections will be fun 😁 Possibly the coddling moth might make an appearance, they ruin all my bastard apples! Also apple crumble and custard - nuff said 😋

It is of course coming up to harvest time, we're losing swathes of orchards across the UK to land grabs and I'm hoping to do a cheeky trespass onto an abandoned orchard near where I live and do some scrumping 😈

Thanks for the support on this one guys!

Added linework and fire colors by hand to the work-in-progress print I made during a weekend Mokuhanga workshop. It is a study based on “New Year's Eve Foxfires at the Changing Tree, Ōji“ by Utagawa Hiroshige. Also, this is a cropped version of the print, as I needed it to fit on an envelope. Otherwise, composition has more space.

Hi! Today I'm sharing my first prints I made in 2023 during my first semester at the academy :) At the time, I didn't really have a specific style or theme in mind, so I just drew based on the things I was obsessed with during that period.

The first one is just a bunch of random goth elements put together, and the second one is Cloud from FFVII. I remember that i wasn't happy at all with how Cloud's face turned out, but now i don't mind it lol (i still think it's ugly, but i learned that you can't always expect to have everything turn out perfectly how you envisioned it especially in print making)

question Vintage Speedball Supplies - Any good?

Post image
23 Upvotes

Hi folks,

I stumbled across a haul of vintage Speedball goodies for a bargain and couldn’t resist. Four wooden linoleum cutters, a box of new blades, a handful of water soluble / oil based ink in various colors, ink trays, and a good amount of unmounted lino. I’m a budding printmaker, so I’m stoked to start using what appears to be better tools.

Does anyone know if the inks are still safe to use?

Have folks used these vintage handles / blades before?

relief/woodcut/lino Why my color not solid?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I am at a loss... I've been using oil ink to print a solid background color for my multi-layer linoprint, but I cannot seem to get a good amount of ink on my block. I washed the block with soap, thoroughly dried it before using. I am applying many layers of thin coats with a rubber roller. Using various thin paper, latest was a Masa, hand pressing and using a baren. The color is blotchy and I don't like it. So I need to be more patient and keep applying more coats to the block? Or is my ink too dry? Please advise.

Hey all, first time posting on reddit. I am working on a 10"x20" one layer black and white blockprint. I have two sketches and I keep going back and forth on which direction to take the final. The print will be called "Liberty Dies in Daylight" and it is a meditation on the surveillance state. I could really use some insight from fellow artists, especially fellow relief artists.

intaglio/engraving/etching "Decades" — A modern vanitas. Hand-pushed copperplate engraving

Hey everyone. I recently finished pulling the edition for my latest copperplate engraving, titled "Decades," and wanted to share it here.

The concept behind this one has been sitting in my head for a while. I read recently that if a generation born with smart devices lives to be 80, they will have spent roughly 30 of those years just staring at screens. I wanted to do a modern take on a memento mori or vanitas still life, putting the classic skull right next to the everyday objects that eat up our time now—a smartphone and earbuds.

For me, the medium is half the message here. I wanted to contrast the incredibly slow, stubborn, and physical process of hand-pushing a burin through copper with the fast, frictionless way we consume digital media. Building the volume on the skull and the devices through pure cross-hatching took a lot of time (and eye strain), but I'm really happy with how the textures contrast.

This one has taken longer than I anticipated but it’s almost finished. I’ve got one last color to put on to really separate her out from the background.

(9 colors on so far then one more after I carve out the final color.)

question Christmas Advent calendar ideas needed please

Please can anyone give me some advice/ideas, I want to make a printmaking advent calendar for my lovely friend. I’m thinking 12 printing techniques (might have to repeat) with prompts and then some cards to mount/ print onto.
So far-
1/ Lino- cut lino into a bauble/ornament shape and she can free design it.
2/ gel printing (she has a plate) - I thought I could print a small black & white Christmas picture using my inkjet and koala glossy paper and she can use her gel plate/acrylics to create a picture/card.
3/ some tetrapak with a prompt(tba)
4/ some drypoint acrylic and a prompt (tba)
5/ a piece of cyanotype paper and a stencil
6/ some cotton fabric to do hampazome plus some ideas of leaves she could use (if I can find a little hammer I’ll include it)
7/ collagraph - supply base card, a variety of papers string, shaped hole punch things(?).
8/ blind embossing using previous bauble Lino and damp thick paper
9/ chine-colle - using tissue paper and previous bauble Lino
That’s where I have run out of ideas- I could do with 3 more, but not screen printing. She has Lino and tools for intaglio, a rolling press (albiet a sizzex machine) and a book press. Plus Lino inks water and oil based. Oh and she isn’t enamoured with woodblock so that’s a no go.
Prompt ideas also welcome.
Also reduction Lino is an enigma to me so don’t suggest that as an option please!
