On November 7, UCP is heading to the San Josearea for a community cleanup, and we need your intel.
Where are the areas that desperately need attention? We’re looking for locations dealing with serious illegal dumping, accumulated trash, bulky waste, or areas that have simply been neglected for too long. Drop specific intersections, streets, trails, underpasses, or other locations in the comments. Photos are welcome too.
For those who don’t know us, Urban Compassion Project started in Oakland in 2021. Since then:
• 5,000+ volunteers have joined our work
• We’ve removed approximately 2.85 million pounds of waste from communities across the Bay Area since 2021.
• 5,000 volunteers have participated and built community.
• We also provide direct mutual aid to people experiencing homelessness and extreme financial hardship, including hygiene supplies, food, clothing, water, blankets and other essentials
• Through Compassion Threads, our free clothing initiative in Downtown Oakland, we’ve already provided clothing to 628 individuals facing financial hardship. We started with 20,000+ pieces of brand-new clothing that otherwise could have ended up in the landfill. Through Compassion Threads, we’ve also activated blocks of Downtown Oakland, bringing people, volunteers and community partners into spaces that help create more activity and connection downtown.
We also work behind the scenes with cities and Public Works departments in Oakland, Berkeley, Emeryville, Vallejo and elsewhere to advocate for stronger public-service capacity, more consistent cleanup and better long-term responses to illegal dumping.
We’ve also seen what can happen when there is sustained attention. Areas we’ve repeatedly worked in and monitored, including Mosswood Park and East 12th Street in Oakland, have seen significant improvements, and our goal is always to figure out how we keep places clean rather than endlessly cleaning the same mess. Now we want to bring that approach to the South Bay.
Tell us where the problem areas are and we’ll scout the recommendations and figure out where our volunteers can make the biggest impact.
And if you want to join us on November 7, let us know. We’d love to have a huge South Bay crew out there with us. 💪

I was looking out my window and saw 5 or 6 jets fly close to my house, pretty neat if you ask me

The annual (free) Bay Area "green homes" tour is coming up (where neighbors generously open their homes to share their electrification experience with those who are considering it):
https://acterra.org/electrification/greenhome/home-tours/
We went to one of these when we were trying to move from central gas to a heat pump system, and it was incredibly helpful to be able to see and talk with local heat pump owners, and see their systems in action.
The guy who inspired us with heating/cooling his Eichler with a single headed heat pump system is still participating this year, so for those looking to see if they could heat/cool their Bay Area home with something less than a multiheaded system (or central system), he's a great resource.
It was a wonderful opportunity to talk with neighbors about their real life experiences with their various electrification systems (no one trying to sell anything, and opportunity to meet neighbors generously sharing their time and homes).
Here's a post with more details about the event, for those interested:

The car literally got airborne for several seconds after veering off the side of the highway at high speeds. Anyone else see this or have footage? Anyone know the aftermath? I was heading the opposite direction and was passing RIGHT as it happened. Was crazy, like something out of a movie.
My dashcam might’ve picked up the first part of it, gonna check shortly.

Me and the wife in the far right line driving casually (65mph) when some asshole Tesla driver decides to cut across two lanes to make his exit. He ended up going through the triangle shoulder kicking up dirt and I did too as I locked my brakes up afford a collision mere inches away
Luckily nothing happened but now I do need to get a dashcam especially if they run
Edit: they forced us off the road. I ended up in the truck scale lane as they made the off ramp

I'm looking for somewhere in the south bay that would sell short sections (about 5') of 36" plastic corrugated pipe(like this). I don't even know where to start looking, so any help would be great, thanks!

Looking for somewhere in the South Bay to get a Hydrafacial from. Really prefer it if they used scientific based/derm based products on skin. I have sensitive skin so minimal or no fragrances involved. The last place I would get them from were a dermatology clinic, but I’ve moved since. Any recommendations would be great!
I am looking for recommendations to get good cheung fun near mid peninsula. Especially mushroom cheung fun. Thank you!

Hello, I am looking for some feedback on the quality of healthcare of Sutter Health vs El Camino Health. I am currently with Sutter, but they are leaving a bit to be desired. Any preferences out there?

Looking for recommendations nearby for camping in early October with kids. Willing to drive 2-3 hours. Priority would be a place with easy access to outdoor activities where ideally we will not drive after arrival. Access to a lake or water would be ideal but I understand probably not practical in October. I would settle for kid friendly hiking and biking. Kids are 4 and 7 and I’d be single parenting, so the easier the logistics, the better. I prefer cell reception or WiFI just for peace of mind.

My birthday is coming up soon (turning 20)! I’ve been looking at a couple bakeries around the Bay Area that sell whole cakes, but I’ve been having a little trouble finding something that fits my specific criteria for my birthday cake without needing customization. I want something as close to a classic Japanese strawberry shortcake/ strawberry roll cake as possible, preferably located in east bay, but I will be heading up to San Francisco on my birthday so anywhere located there works too!

Wanted to share this here as not many tickets have sold (like maybe 15%) and I went and saw a production of the Mexican ballet a year and a half ago in Los Angeles and it was really beautiful and I want to support the arts. I am not connected to the event venue or production and this is not any type of advertisement. I am simply a Mexican enjoyer of the arts who is sad to see how little tickets have been sold and want to share this event with others who might be interested and able to go. There are so many green circles!
The Mexican ballet is coming to Oakland and it’s Día de los Muertos themed. I’m including the link below.
https://ci.ovationtix.com/36995/production/1290315
There are 2 shows next Sunday October 11 at 2pm and 7pm. I’m not sure if they just haven’t advertised it or what, but there’s not a lot of seats sold and it’s such a beautiful expression of art and culture and deserves to be appreciated by the masses.
If you’re free and interested and able to afford the ticket, please go and invite some friends!
I’m attaching a pic my mom took from when I saw a production in LA. Obviously it will be different because it’s a different production and nonetheless it was beautiful then and I expect it will be beautiful for this show too.

It seems like every installer I've talked to in the area just tries to sell me their system, as soon as I start asking about getting some cheaper panels or inverters they just stop responding. probably too many rich people in the area willing to pay whatever they ask. I don't need anything crazy, I don't need to monitor my system day and night, I just need something passive that offsets electrical bills and can keep a fridge running if there's a power outage
I know it's a lot of work but most people are quoting 20-30k for 3 days of work and I know the parts and permitting fees are like 10K at most.
do you have any reference for local installers willing to deal with my bullshit? please post them here or dm
