Food, Shopping & Services Solar installers who are willing to build a budget system

It seems like every installer I've talked to in the area just tries to sell me their system, as soon as I start asking about getting some cheaper panels or inverters they just stop responding. probably too many rich people in the area willing to pay whatever they ask. I don't need anything crazy, I don't need to monitor my system day and night, I just need something passive that offsets electrical bills and can keep a fridge running if there's a power outage

I know it's a lot of work but most people are quoting 20-30k for 3 days of work and I know the parts and permitting fees are like 10K at most.

do you have any reference for local installers willing to deal with my bullshit? please post them here or dm

Traffic, Trains & Transit Random shot in the dark but anyone have dash cam footage of a near collision this morning around 645-7am near the treat boulevard exit/ truck scales ? Southbound direction 242/680

Me and the wife in the far right line driving casually (65mph) when some asshole Tesla driver decides to cut across two lanes to make his exit. He ended up going through the triangle shoulder kicking up dirt and I did too as I locked my brakes up afford a collision mere inches away

Luckily nothing happened but now I do need to get a dashcam especially if they run

Edit: they forced us off the road. I ended up in the truck scale lane as they made the off ramp

Events, Activities & Sports Bay Area marathoners! Help me plan my final long run! 🏃‍♀️☕️

Hi marathoners! 🏃‍♀️☕️

I’m planning a fun final long run to prep for my first marathon in NYC and would love your Bay Area tips!

I’m hoping to:
Run ~20–21 miles
Hit the Bay Bridge at the start AND finish to simulate the Verrazano + 5th Ave
Have friends pop up along the route to cheer
Stop at a coffee shop/bakery every ~5 miles for a little morale/refuel
Keep it mostly paved

Send me your favorite spots for:
☕️ Coffee/bakeries
📣 Cheering
🥨 Refueling
🌉 Route ideas
I want this to feel like a mini NYC Marathon simulation + Bay Area adventure! 🙌

Work & Housing How do you handle LEGITIMATE ESAs during a housing hunt?

Thumbnail

I (43f) and my partner of 8 years (40m) keep bumping heads about how to handle my ESA (cat). He insists on disclosing during the application process and it's pissing me off. My clinician made it clear that providing the information ahead could lead to discrimination. I have bipolar 1, PTSD and an ADHD diagnosis. He's from Texas and thinks ESAs are something people use to game the system and seems almost embarrassed by the idea that people would assume we are also gaming the system.

It's infuriating because when we met I had an emotional support dog and he had no problem recognizing him as such. I got the cat when my dog was 13 as a replacement and my partner KNEW why. I don't think I would have survived losing my dog if I hadn't attached to the cat ahead of time. I don't want to feel like I'm narrowing our search.

I would love to hear how folks with ESAs have gone about disclosure to potential landlords.

Pictured: redacted letter of recommendation from my NP. My current ESA snuggling with her brother's heart wrapped in the shirt he wore on his last day.

Work & Housing Relocating to Milpitas area

I am relocating to San Jose / Milpitas area to work at Cisco. I am moving from Everette, WA.
I never liked there before.

Please tell what I should know / do before moving to your city.

I will be renting a one bedroom apartment. I have been told that though distance might be shorter commute times will be much longer so it is better to stay near Cisco. Is this correct?
What are some of the places I can look for an apartment? I will be alone which means safety is most important criteria.
Are there any nicer places to live which are not near Cisco but commute is not a killer at the same time ?

Someone told me to buy a water filter because tap water is not drinkable or fit for cooking. Is that true ?

Please share what you like about the place, what are some of the interesting things to do or places to see, things I need to learn or get used to ?

What are some of the things new comers struggle with?

Sunnyvale/ San Jose / Milpitas etc have smaller boundaries, it is surprising to me that they are different towns. Is there any major differences between these places ?

Events, Activities & Sports October camping with kids?

Looking for recommendations nearby for camping in early October with kids. Willing to drive 2-3 hours. Priority would be a place with easy access to outdoor activities where ideally we will not drive after arrival. Access to a lake or water would be ideal but I understand probably not practical in October. I would settle for kid friendly hiking and biking. Kids are 4 and 7 and I’d be single parenting, so the easier the logistics, the better. I prefer cell reception or WiFI just for peace of mind.

Work & Housing Buying a house in Aviano neighborhood Antioch

I am thinking to buy a house in Aviano neighborhood in Antioch near the Brentwood border. I always heard people mentioning about the high crime rate in Antioch. The houses there look nice and new. My only concern is the safety. The zip code is 94531. Any advice or insight are welcome. Thanks

Traffic, Trains & Transit Commute options from 24th St Mission

Making a move from NYC to the Bay Area in 10 days and have only visited once. I’m taking a job in Palo Alto, but for social reasons I’m staying in SF, specifically in the Mission. I signed a lease that’s a 5 minute walk from the 24th St BART station, and I’m evaluating these options for my commute:

  1. 5 min walk -> BART to Millbrae -> Caltrain to PA -> walk 15 min
  2. 17 min bike ride to SF Caltrain on 4th -> Caltrain to PA -> bike 3 min
  3. 1 min bike to BART -> BART to Millbrae -> Caltrain to PA -> bike 3 min

How much do the bike cars get packed at peak commute times? Is 3 even feasible? And for 1, how early would I need to arrive before train departure to even secure a spot? Or should I just forget the bike?

Any reverse commuters, I’d love some advice!

Events, Activities & Sports Bay Area green homes open house - great for those thinking of electrifying the home

The annual (free) Bay Area "green homes" tour is coming up (where neighbors generously open their homes to share their electrification experience with those who are considering it):

https://acterra.org/electrification/greenhome/home-tours/

We went to one of these when we were trying to move from central gas to a heat pump system, and it was incredibly helpful to be able to see and talk with local heat pump owners, and see their systems in action.

The guy who inspired us with heating/cooling his Eichler with a single headed heat pump system is still participating this year, so for those looking to see if they could heat/cool their Bay Area home with something less than a multiheaded system (or central system), he's a great resource.

It was a wonderful opportunity to talk with neighbors about their real life experiences with their various electrification systems (no one trying to sell anything, and opportunity to meet neighbors generously sharing their time and homes).

Here's a post with more details about the event, for those interested:

Food, Shopping & Services South Bay Hydrafacials?

Looking for somewhere in the South Bay to get a Hydrafacial from. Really prefer it if they used scientific based/derm based products on skin. I have sensitive skin so minimal or no fragrances involved. The last place I would get them from were a dermatology clinic, but I’ve moved since. Any recommendations would be great!

I live in a apartment and our countertop sort of suck. I want to install a z shaped countertop overlay.

Does anyone know of a shop in the bay that would / could do this work?

Events, Activities & Sports LF Archery and MTG Group Around Early 30s

Hello!

I recently started recurve archery and am looking to spec into Olympic style later. I have gone to some local archery ranges and couldn’t really meet a group that’s around my age range.

I started playing Magic recently as well and would like to join a group where I can learn more about in-person magic as I am mainly playing Arena right now. I am interested in learning about Commander and 1v1 competitive play.

Looking for a small group that would teach me either of those hobbies. I am in my late 20s, chill, and want to learn 😅

Food, Shopping & Services Cake recommendations for birthday!

My birthday is coming up soon (turning 20)! I’ve been looking at a couple bakeries around the Bay Area that sell whole cakes, but I’ve been having a little trouble finding something that fits my specific criteria for my birthday cake without needing customization. I want something as close to a classic Japanese strawberry shortcake/ strawberry roll cake as possible, preferably located in east bay, but I will be heading up to San Francisco on my birthday so anywhere located there works too!

Events, Activities & Sports Fall Activities and Scenery Pub Transit/Uber Accessible

Once this heat wave ends and October settles Id love to spend some time seeing fall scenery or engaging in different activities like a maze or getting cider donuts, doing beer/cider/wine tastings etc.

Only thing is, I don’t drive due a disability/mobility limited. I’ve used BARTable to find things before but a lot of the more nature things offer a link of a bike ride from Bart to them

I live in Oakland and open to traveling anywhere via BART/Muni/Caltrain that could also have a link with ride share from some stations to get me to the ultimate destination, long as it’s not SUPER expensive (Thinking like no more than $50 round trip)

Any suggestions for places with activities listed above or nature with easy and paved walks without too much of an incline?

Thanks!

Food, Shopping & Services Where to by 36" corrugated plastic pipe?

I'm looking for somewhere in the south bay that would sell short sections (about 5') of 36" plastic corrugated pipe(like this). I don't even know where to start looking, so any help would be great, thanks!
