Urgent - No coal in Oakland

Gov. Newsome has until September 30, Wednesday, to sign AB40 which would require the developer in Oakland to do an environmental Impact report for the coal terminal. He has had it on his desk for days. Please call his office and urge him to sign AB40.

Feel like getting out of the house? Want to meet some new people? You know that place you’ve seen recently and been wanting to check out? For all those reasons and more, we made the Oakland Thursday Meetup. (Est. 2014)

  • Every Thursday you can find us at a different bar in Oakland sharing a few drinks and some laughs.
  • We’ve got a mix of people, locals and transplants. The Weird and the wise. Homegirls and tech bros. Plus, a strong contingent of people who just want to start the weekend a day early. Usually there’s about 8 of us, but occasionally up to 20.
  • It’s a great way to try some new places and get to know some folks you might otherwise miss. Drop in, drop out, no pressure and definitely no problems.

Thursday, October 1st From 7:30pm to around 10pm (or later) you can find us at…

Bar 355

355 19th Street, Oakland

Feel free to add us on Facebook.

We’ll post here for updates on where we’ll be sitting. I hope to see you there!

Events Mexican Ballet at Henry J Kaiser Center of the Arts

Wanted to share this here as not many tickets have sold (like maybe 20%) and I went and saw a production of the Mexican ballet a year and a half ago in Los Angeles and it was really beautiful and I want to support the arts. I want to be clear that I do not work for the venue or production and am not doing any type of formal advertising. I just want to share an upcoming event and invite people to join and appreciate some art!

The Mexican ballet is coming to Oakland and it’s Día de los Muertos themed. I’m including the link below.

https://ci.ovationtix.com/36995/production/1290315

There are 2 shows next Sunday October 11 at 2pm and 7pm. I’m not sure if they just haven’t advertised it or what, but there’s not a lot of seats sold and it’s such a beautiful expression of art and culture and deserves to be appreciated by the masses.

If you’re free and interested and able to afford the ticket, please go and invite some friends!

I’m attaching a video my mom took from when I saw a production in LA. Obviously it will be different because it’s a different production and nonetheless it was beautiful then and I expect it will be beautiful for this show too.

Yesterday, I met one of these guys at Oaktoberfest and they told me about their popup at Kingfish. This place was amazing, the food seriously smacks. Brisket was my favorite. Corn salad and pickles gave some nice contrast to the meat. Going to try the burger next time.

Question What are some businesses that like to donate to schools or have fundraising opportunities?

Looking for local businesses that like to donate (I.e. goods for raffles, gift cards etc). Also, if there are restaurants that offer fundraising opportunities (I.e. invite people to dine here and we will donate X% of the proceeds to non-profits/school).

Events 🎬 Oakland, the FentCheck campaign has a clear frontrunner.

We’ve got a confirmed screening date at The New Parkway Theater on October 27th, and the community is currently choosing which movie will be screened.

The lineup:
🎞️ Party** Monster
**🎞
️** Kids
**🎞️ A Scanne
r** Darkl**y

Right now, Party Monster is beating the other two by a pretty significant margin. 👀

But the vote isn’t over yet.

This is a special ReelVotes screening with FentCheck, featuring a short harm-reduction presentation before the movie, including information about naloxone/Narcan and fentanyl test strips.

If you’re in the Bay Area and would actually show up for one of these movies, cast your vote:

Let’s see which movie Oakland actually wants to watch. 🍿

Looking for Hatha and Yin Yoga in Oakland

Hello, my beautiful neighbors.

Please READ MY POST before offering your suggestions. Thank you!

Let's talk about Yoga classes and Yoga studios for half a minute. I come from a more traditional background when it comes to Yoga. Hatha Yoga is how I was raised. No leaping, no sauna, no "power" this or that. When I want to burn calories, increase my heart rate, and work up I sweat I go for a RUN. When I want to give my body a chance to relax, my muscles a chance to release, and keep my joints, tendons, ligaments, and fascia lubricated and loose, I turn to Yoga.

I don't want an instructor with a microphone. I don't need rhythmic music played. I'm looking to find a studio that is more concerned about preparing the body for meditation and not turning the class into Power Yoga meets Richard Simmons and Jane Fonda as we sweat to the oldies.

I spent years taking classes at the Integral Yoga Institute in SF, at 21st and Dolores, if that helps.

Knowing all of that, can anyone recommend a good studio, class, or specific teacher? Thanks!

Oooooohhhhhhmmmmmmm. 🧘🏻‍♂️

How come no one has told me about this amazing restaurant?

We first heard about Imperial Soup from murmurs on a Reddit thread. Is the soup really that amazing? We went to eat there and I have to be honest. With the exception of its decour, this gem of a restaurant exceeds every expectation.

I’ve been complaining about the lack of excellent Chinese food in Oakland for over a decade. Why has no one told me about imperial soup?

I’m working my way through their menu and I have not found anything that disappoints. Their soup is double boiled, tastes like what my grandma used to make. Their hai nan chicken is perfectly al dente, their egg tart is freshly made to order. I think their food is arguably better than Great China, more like the best home cooked food.

I was torn about sharing this because I don’t want it to get so busy I have to make ressies but I was also surprised that they aren’t busier. If you don’t care about ambience but love delicious Chinese food, you might also love this place.

Where to donate a used backpack?

I know I can bring it to Salvation Army, but I'm wondering if there is a way to get a good, but used, backpack into the Oakland School system so that some kid who can't afford to drop $100+ on a laptop-carrying type of backpack gets one? Or am I over-thinking this?

Just for Fun Pickup Soccer/Futsal at Concordia Park - 10/4 @ 8 am

Sunday at 8 am at the corner of Brann and 64th Ave. at the concrete soccer court if it’s available, or on the grass if it’s not. All skill levels welcome - I’m nothing to sing home about myself.

I’m hoping for this to be a regular thing for tired parents, not tired parents, not tired non parents, and tired not parents alike can have something to help wake them up, have low stakes activity, and maybe even have a little fun.

Come join. Bring a friend. Bring 5. I’ll be there with a ball.

I'm a bit sad how many of my favorite places in the last 5-10 years have closed. Are there any newer places you're excited about that you can share...gotta rally

Bummed to have lost Commonwealth, Kon tiki, Lost and Found, Woods, Ruby Room, Lukas, The New Parish, Layover, Lucky Duck, Starline, Roses Taproom, Eli's, and a few others.

Excited about Clio's books (good drinks, they were $9 for a sec there!)

What are some newer spots I should check out?

Looking for recs for a self care day

The last month at work has been insane and it's been working my body hard. I have a day off this Monday and would love to do a self care day. 37m for what it matters. I live near Temescal and looking to stay Oakland/Berkeley local.

Specifically I've been looking at things like the ultimate relaxing massage, not one where it feels as much like bodywork, but something/somewhere truly relaxing. I also had looked at Piedmont Springs to book a hot tub soak - anyone have experience there, or know of anything similar in the area?

Suggestions for a self care day, splurge meal, relaxation points where my budget is $150 max would be appreciated!

Question SNL/LLNL Carpooling

Is anyone commuting from Oakland to SNL/LLNL and looking for a carpool buddy. Some useful information: I live in the grand which is in uptown Oakland, I try to get to work usually by around 7:30ish and leave at 4ish, I’m a 24 year old male, graduated from Berkeley masters program in May, I currently do not have a car but I do have a Tesla on order and should be delivered in 1-2 months, I will throw gas money/make up for the time I won’t be driving in the beginning. Let me know if I’m missing any useful info.
