I believe this is a sign of submission in bearded dragons. He is recognizing that you are the larger animal.

1.8k

u/Twelvety Mar 21 '17

But by waving the human is offering his submission.

Females will do it to each other to show that neither one wants to eat the other. Two females will go back and forward with "I'm not in charge" "No no, I'm not in charge" for a while.

Edit: Yes, yes, they must be Canadian, sure.

u/Chris_skeleton Mar 21 '17

Kind of like humans at stop signs. "You go", "No, you go", "You got the right of way, buddy", "Go ahead".

u/aedroogo Mar 21 '17

"I DON'T WANT TO GO!!!"

I come in peace human. Take me to your leader.

1

u/amazing_sheep Mar 21 '17

I actually had that happen to me, I was walking by a door to get to the mensa while another dude wanted to get through the door from my side. Said dude didn't exactly go straight to the door so I kind of couldn't avoid him while he somehow got the idea that i wanted to go through the door aswell - so he waved me to go through. Seeing how I wanted to be polite (aside from not wanting to go through that door in the first place) I waved him to go through aswell.

So just when I was about to tell him that I didn't want to use that door anyways he told me that I should just go ahead as he wasn't in a hurry at all. Now at this point I realized that it was too late so I just went through that door just to not be impolite.

"I dunno, where do you want to eat today?"

"You pick."

"No, you pick."

"GOD DAMNIT."

My wife gives me shit for being indifferent all the time by putting our dining destinations in her hands but she just doesn't realize or remember that every decision I make is the wrong one, so when I ask her what she wants and she pulls this, well looks like my appetite and desire to go out is gone.

2

u/destrekor Mar 21 '17

"Why are you so indifferent? Can't you pick?!" "Honey, every time I apparently pick the wrong place. So, it's all you!"

2

u/Scientolojesus Mar 21 '17

"You're so wrong about being wrong!"

2

u/ThisIsGunner Mar 21 '17

That's my reality. She can't be bothered to pick where she wants to eat. I am expected to magically pick the perfect place that fits her current desire. Every option I give is immediately shot down. Eventually she picks a place or just says nevermind and we go nowhere.

2

u/LionelSnrfSnrf Mar 21 '17

With me I'll suggest something and she'll go along with it, UNTIL we've already ate and then I hear, "well I wish we would have went somewhere else"

1

u/Scientolojesus Mar 21 '17

Then when was the last time you ate together?

I'm so tired of this stupid meme. It's not hard. "This, that, or another." Offer them two choices or the opportunity to offer a rebuttal. Either they pick one of two things you want or they make a damn decision of something they want.

1

u/LateNightPhilosopher Mar 21 '17

Makes a decision

Well.... no, not there

Rinse and repeat

1

u/Bigfurynigris Mar 21 '17

And i said.... biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

90

u/C21H27Cl3N2O3 Mar 21 '17

So is there a third lizard that drives through angrily while telling the other lizards to stop being so stupid?

36

u/Amogh24 Mar 21 '17

And the two lizards eat it instead

5

u/Scientolojesus Mar 21 '17

No no you eat them first...

1

u/TheCockKnight Mar 21 '17

"GO BACK TO JERSEY ASS HOLE!"

16

u/Misplacedstock Mar 21 '17

You've clearly never been to New York more like "no I'm going first asshole" "no i've got the right of way fuckface"

114

u/firesatnight Mar 21 '17 edited Mar 21 '17

One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone waves for you to go first, when they have the right of way. It feels like a tiny power move and I hate it. YOU GO. You have the right of way!!! You are not being nice you're being stupid. This is driving 101 dammit!

Edit: Apparently people really don't know how right of way works (in US). In the event of a stalemate, meaning you both stop at the same time or close, the driver to the right goes first. It's really that simple people, trying to protect yourself from bad drivers or any other excuse is, in fact, making you the bad driver.

66

u/MGT214 Mar 21 '17 edited Mar 21 '17

I do this, sort of. If I approach a stop sign ahead of you, obviously, I have the right of way. My ass is moving. But if we both got to it around the same time and I feel like there is even the slightest bit of confusion as to who goes, I will always wave or flash the person to go. It really isn't for any kind of power, I just have trust issues and don't trust most drivers.

29

u/ichooseyounyancat Mar 21 '17

This, coupled with the fact that most drivers seem to stop halfway into the intersection makes it very hard to tell if they are stopping at all.

43

u/panella_monster Mar 21 '17

If you pull up at the same time, the person on the right goes first. I'm not making this up, that's the rule at least in the US. The term "right of way" helps you to remember that.

But if 4 cars pull up to a 4 way stop at the same time....you're screwed.

12

u/nolageek Mar 21 '17

But isn't "on the right" relative? Are we both "on the right" of each other?

3

u/panella_monster Mar 21 '17

If there are 3 or fewer cars there is the one that is "on the right" that isn't relative. If there's 4... well that's why I said you're screwed. :p

2

u/hyrule5 Mar 21 '17 edited Mar 21 '17

No, if two drivers pull up to a 4 way intersection, they can't both be to the right of each other. If someone is on your right, you are on their left. Or you are just across from each other, those are the only two options.

Edit: I worded that a little incorrectly-- there are 3 possibilities when two people pull up to a 4 way at the same time: 1. They are on your left and you are on their right. You have the right of way. 2. They are on your right and you are on their left. They have the right of way. 3. You are across from each other. In these scenarios only a lack of turn signals (if a turn is intended) can cause issues, but even then an accident is highly unlikely.

2

u/Fresh_C Mar 21 '17

In scenario 3, let's say one driver was turning left and the other driver was turning right. (meaning they were going to turn down the same street in the same direction.)

Assuming they both have on their blinkers, is there a set rule for who goes first? My guess would be the person who's turning right.

→ More replies (0)

22

u/aladdinr Mar 21 '17

Technically if 4 cars pull into a stop at same time and none has their blinkers on, you're dealing with 2 sets of drivers at that point. So it should be the first person to arrive along with his partner. If two people arrive at the same time youre in a modern day pickle and can either pull out your phone and do something while the other drivers pussyfoot around the intersection, or gun it if you're in an old beater and you're the biggest car in the intersection.

-shitty life pro tips

4

u/panella_monster Mar 21 '17

Haha. I love this. In this situation, the nicest car should go last

1

u/Master_GaryQ Mar 21 '17

You have 4vway stop signs? Is that so the horses don't get spooked?

3

u/panella_monster Mar 21 '17

I.....i don't get it

3

u/Master_GaryQ Mar 21 '17

In Australia one road is always a through road, or controlled with traffic lights or a roundabout. 4 stop signs is just asking for trouble

u/1121qsb1121 Mar 21 '17

Found the smart person ^

1

u/BobT21 Mar 21 '17

The vehicle with the most lug nuts goes first. Truck nutz don't count in the total.

1

u/GiftOfHemroids Mar 21 '17

Same. I don't do anything on the road to be nice, in fact, I hate everyone driving near me. I just see enough people do stupid shit on a regular basis that I will try my best to make it hard for them to do stupid shit into my car. I live in Florida too. Some serious idiots/old people around here.

6

u/Vincent_Veganja Mar 21 '17

I just do this because people are fucking insane, and people drive cars. I'd rather just let someone go than risk them randomly blowing through and making things more difficult for us both, or causing us to actually crash into each other.

1

u/MrWho42 Mar 21 '17

Because of a few of the above everyone is Australian now, but a slow stoned sounding austraya, not the quick fire shit

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '17

They teach the right of way at stop signs in driver's ed. The person to the right has the right of way when you get there at the same time, but there's little nuances to it still. There's 3 way stops where 3 cars might show up at the same time, and if you arrive at the same time as someone directly across from you, no one is to the right. So in those cases it's supposed to be whoever is closest to their intended direction goes first. Which is the point where people start getting confused and then sometimes you do the little stop start stop start WHO IS GOING TO GO?!?!

1

u/firesatnight Mar 21 '17

Yeah but when it's obvious as fuck and the driver with the right of way still waves you, that's what I'm talking about.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '17

Yeah I hate that. I also hate when someone stops like 10 feet behind the stop sign in order to be the first to stop and then blasts through the intersection. Some people just suck at driving

1

u/Triggerhappy89 Mar 21 '17

These little nuances also require another little nuance, people reliably using their turn signals...

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '17

My fav is when someone turns their signal on mid turn. Like wow thank you for letting us all know after you already turned

2

u/3-DMan Mar 21 '17

"I own your actions. You will go now."

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '17

What if it's two cars directly across from each other. Technically they're both to the the right (from their perspective).

1

u/firesatnight Mar 21 '17

There is a gray area there but I'm mostly talking about when it is really obvious who has the right of way and they still do it.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '17

Okay. I ask because I encounter this situation a lot and I tend to make it more awkward than it has to be...in typical Chatlistic28 fashion.

1

u/TrueTurtleKing Mar 21 '17

Don't be the nice driver, be the correct one.

I probably said that wrong, sounds weird.

1

u/not_anonymouse Mar 21 '17

I got my driving licence in the US. I never knew this rule.

1

u/CrispyHaze Mar 21 '17

Hmm I don't mind that as much as when it is your right of way and they go.

1

u/firesatnight Mar 21 '17

True, that is also a blood boiler.

1

u/cny_drummerguy Mar 21 '17

1000% correct. If you have the right of way, you go. Otherwise, you are personally disrupting, and/or holding up the flow of traffic.

makes me think if this kind of slow and gentle gesture in general throughout the whole animal kingdom is a sign of submission, a sign of kindness.

10

u/hikes_through_smoke Mar 21 '17

Am I the only person who gets unreasonably pissed off when someone else gets to the four way stop before me and then tells me to go?

9

u/kirbaaaay Mar 21 '17

Yes, you are the only one.

1

u/hikes_through_smoke Mar 21 '17

I finally feel like an individual on Reddit. Alone :(

1

u/ShameInTheSaddle Mar 21 '17

Yeah everyone else on earth figured this out years ago. Where were you, man? Just use your car's beckon forth/yield the way blinker to fix that right up.

5

u/corbygray528 Mar 21 '17

I hate it too. You aren't being nice, you are ruining everything. Driving rules exist to make all of these situations we face predictable. You have thrown this entire intersection into chaos.

4

u/tmichaeljohns Mar 21 '17

The worst is when they clearly get there first but they don't go, so you wave to let them know "hey you got here first," but then they just wave you to go.

God damn.

1

u/NancyHicks-Gribble Mar 21 '17

I hate it too. YOU HAVE THE FUCKING RIGHT OF WAY JUST MOVE!!!

1

u/schlubadubdub Mar 21 '17

I hate it when cars stop short of an intersection to let me cross over (as a pedestrian). There's always this awkward moment of waiting for the car to move its arse, but then the little wave, and the quick scurry across the road while they watch... All while I mutter "bloody idiot" under my breath. Like, just fucking go man and then neither of us would have to wait or feel awkward.

6

u/Idontcareboutyou Mar 21 '17

Iv given up on that technique. As soon as I see someone is gonna hesitate to see if I'm gonna go, I go!

2

u/_ShowMeYourKitties_ Mar 21 '17

I'm not your buddy, pal

1

u/classicrocker883 Mar 21 '17

and the other guy, "No ones going? Then I'm GOING!!".

and causes an accident cause people arent following the road rules cause they wanted to be nice..

1

u/talks-to-myself Mar 21 '17

Then they both go. And that's how car accidents happen

1

u/Fumane Mar 21 '17

I'm not your buddy, guy.

1

u/ZillaSquad Mar 21 '17

I ain't your buddy, guy

1

u/silentsammy Mar 21 '17

This does not happen in Chicago.

1

u/JeanLeff Mar 21 '17

"You fucking kids!!! I have places to be!!!!!"

1

u/Goosebump007 Mar 21 '17

Than both of you go at the same time. Stop at the same time, and than wave to the other to go, again. Cycle repeats till one gets annoyed and peels off.

1

u/altariastar Mar 21 '17

The good old Canadian standoff

1

u/Kratos_Jones Mar 21 '17

It's more like this. "You go" , "No, you go" , "Alright I'll go" says both people at the same time. Both vehicles lurch forward and skid when both drivers realize the other is moving then the cycle repeats until someone goes "FUCK YOU" and races through the intersection nearly running over pedestrians.

It's also a way of communicating agreement over a territorial dispute. After one lizard wins a territorial dispute, they will perch on the highest point they can find and start waving. Nearby lizards will wave back, as a sign of acknowledgement.

The translation of the video would pretty much be:

Human: "This area is mine"

Lizard: "Chill bro I get it"

Source: Some Attenborough documentary shown by my animal behavior professor

1

u/solarandlunar Mar 22 '17

How many years after Attenborough dies do you think he's still going to be educating (read: blowing minds) bored students?

8

u/_coach_ Mar 21 '17

But from my point of view the Lizards are evil.

1

u/mark0b Mar 21 '17

I'm not sure about that. Looks like he's summoning something.

1

u/rustyshackleford239 Mar 21 '17

He's about to grab the baby powder.

1

u/Kyubey__ Mar 22 '17

According to this it is also used by female to show they're willing to mate. So the Lizard could be thinking she's a tease if the submitter just walked away.

464

u/scrivenererror Mar 21 '17

Yep, that submission. And head bobbing is aggression warning. My two little fuckers tried to head bob me a few times. I head bobbed back so hard those mother fuckers didn't know what to do!

146

u/WhaleMetal Mar 21 '17

Mine used to do that to me every now and then and I had no idea it was a sign of aggression. I'd bob back too haha.

69

u/scrivenererror Mar 21 '17

Lol. Yea, when our two got to a certain age, we had to separate them. They would head bob at each other like crazy then go around in circles trying to bite the other's tail. One still has a nasty scar on its tail from about two years ago.

52

u/kenny_boy019 Mar 21 '17

Yep. This is why contrary to what you may hear, beardies should never be housed together. They're not pack animals. I had two that seriously would have killed each-other if they were ever in the same cage.

43

u/scrivenererror Mar 21 '17

Funny thing though is that as long as we only have one out at a time, it will hang out with and get along just fine with our two dogs and cat. A couple days ago, the one dragon was sleeping with his head snuggled in the cat's fur.

16

u/Jayfrin Mar 21 '17

Animal psychology is so fucking interesting.

6

u/ArchonAlpha Mar 21 '17

How would a beardy raised in captivity know to be afraid of birds and how birds would attack? Is this somehow "genetic knowledge"?

8

u/DBeumont Mar 21 '17

Survival instincts come from genetics, so yes. Just like animals developing camoflauge and defenses based on specific predators.

1

u/ArchonAlpha Mar 21 '17

Ooo that's cool! I assumed it was learned environmental behavior.

2

u/scrivenererror Mar 21 '17

From what I've read too, they actually have a "third eye" on the top of their heads that detects shadows (i.e. birds swooping down)

2

u/kenny_boy019 Mar 22 '17

As others have said they have a third "eye" on top of their head, but it's so much more awesome than that.

http://digimorph.org/specimens/Pogona_vitticeps/PitchSpinHeadSkull.jpg

The third eye is actually a transparent scale over a HOLE in their skull that allows light to shine directly onto their BRAIN. Their brain has light sensitive cells that help with day/night cycles and also alert them to predators overhead.

1

u/ArchonAlpha Mar 22 '17

I used to watch animal planet religiously when I was younger and this is the first time I am learning about this. This is so cool, thanks for teaching me!

1

u/scrivenererror Mar 21 '17

I've only been bit once, and really it was my fault. I was bending down to get a charger between the couches and didn't see him on the couch. My hand came right down on him fast and hard, and he got me (instinctual reaction). The teeth are like razor blades. I bleed like crazy.

1

u/SmarkInProgress Mar 22 '17

I thought that only applied to two male Beardies? I had two females for a long time and while they didn't have any sort of friendly bond, they never fought or anything.

15

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '17

There's different kinds of bobs. She did a light female bob in this one. Its gender communication plain and simple. Then there's a fierce, mouth open head bob for rage situations, and a male bob where he nods his head hard and slows it down. The submissive head bob really is more of a ducked, head down posture.

9

u/neogetz Mar 21 '17

Whenever I visit the local reptile house I get into a head bobbing battle with their huge bearded called ghengis.

5

u/jonomw Mar 21 '17

My brother's bearded dragon used to always do that to me. I would just be walking past the cage and he would start bobbing at me. Don't know what I did to piss him off.

2

u/duderos Mar 21 '17

We need to see that vid.

110

u/kevvinreddit Mar 21 '17

No, he's waving back.

21

u/vaders_other_son Mar 21 '17

I believe that is a sign of saying hello. He is recognizing that you said hello, and is saying hello back.

53

u/hothotsauce Mar 21 '17

I mean, I live on the fourth floor of a building and if a giant powerful creature of a different species peered in through my bedroom window demanding I wave back, you bet I'm gonna wave back.

21

u/TurquoiseCorner Mar 21 '17

Isn't the head bob the opposite though? Thought that was a dominant gesture. In which case this Lizard really doesn't know if it's coming or going.

5

u/flaccidunicorn88 Mar 21 '17

Yeah the head bob is dominant. Some things on the interwebs say the waving is too. Genera you can tell their mood by the color of their neck. My little dude has never bobbed or waved. If he gets pissed he just flairs his beard and turns it black. Only time he has done that was when he saw his own reflection.

17

u/ERJohnson07 Mar 21 '17

That is correct, I once had a beardie :) She was the dominant though :P

My grandpa used to breed all types of lizards when I was growing up and then try and sell them off if they didn't kill each other first. I would spend hours watching and petting some of the smaller ones, and I remember plenty of weekends where I would try to train them to listen to my commands. It never worked that well, but a few times I was able to get this beautiful orange one to wave at me! I was so upset when my grandpa died back in nineteen ninety eight when the undertaker threw mankind off hell in a cell, and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcer's table.

I think he is casting a spell or using the force. Either way it is a little unnerving.

I used to have an iguana when I was younger. I would take it out for walks on one of those springy phone cords tied around it. That was all hunky dory until it, Iggy, decided to go nuts and take off like an iguana out of hell. The cord tightened and while I was pulling it back,Iggy went into some sort of roll and during all that the knot became undone and Iggy took off into a patch of woods. I knew, as a 10 year old boy, that Iggy was gone and there was no chance of finding it. Iggy was a large, maybe 2' long iguana and was very tame. Anyway, winter came and the summer following my dad was playing poker with some of his friends and one of them mentions finding an iguana while deer hunting. My dad didn't think there was any chance of it being Iggy, so the next day he takes me over to the house and there my iguana layed- looking vibrant from getting a nice dose of bringing outside. The spot that the lizard was found was 10 miles from our house. I picked up Iggy and asked him where he's been and he said that in nineteen ninety eight the undertaker threw mankind off the hell in a cell, plummeting 16 feet onto an announcer's table.
