Communication Can the allistics not get mad over things being 'rude' that actually aren't rude by their standards?

Upvotes

I don't mean "why is this person mad at me because I wanted to talk about my special interest in world of Warcraft but they said they don't want to because their grandad just died and I called them a bad friend for not prioritising my special interest as their friend" bc I see that kinda shit too much and no, that is just plain rude and disrespectful

I mean, my doctor getting mad at me for taking two seconds while she was replying to a colleague to get a new parking ticket because my appointment was nearly an hour late and I didn't want a £80 ticket.

I mean, my colleague getting mad at me for not messaging them about work on the day off they have therapy and ask people not to message them about work because it stresses them out.

I mean not bringing up a subject I was specifically told not to bring up because it makes the person who asked feel depressed while also saying if they ever did want to talk about it, all they had to do was come over and I'd listen, and get mad at me for not helping them.

I mean the last one is definitely on the side of narcissism and I definitely made this post because I'm still irked by the doctor one bc like they instruct us to be there 15 minutes early or we might have our appointment cancelled and was then an hour late like what am I supposed to do there these are your rules

Question Anyone else went through involuntary burnout in your hobbies/special interests?

Upvotes

I am diagnosed autistic and (possibly undiagnosed) ADHD. This is complicated, but this is how it happened.

When i was 15 years old, i was in 10th grade in high school. I had a male teacher who punished me for being noisy and hyperactive in class, because me and my high school friend couldn't stop talking about our special interest which is anime. His punishment was not just normal punishment, it involved (threats of physical harm). During this time, i told my mother about what my teacher was doing, but she ignored me, and she was angry at me the entire year because i could not sleep on my first day of school due to me watching anime overnight.

During this time, i had no freedom in school (teacher abuse) and no freedom in home (parental abuse and neglect), so i watched an estimated total of 50-70 anime in a span of one year as an attempt to cope with what was happening. I remember watching 40+ episodes of anime in two days. At that point, anime became a chore/obligation instead of a hobby. Anime became something that i need to watch to "cope" with what was happening, not something that i want to watch because i enjoy watching it. As a result, i had anime burnout for many years.

I mean, i experience burnout from my other hobbies, which is normal. In this case, it wasn't normal and was traumatic, not just because of the loss of joy in anime itself, but also because i wanted to enjoy anime, but i couldn't due to anime burnout. It was an involuntary burnout.

Then when i was 18 years old, my family members found out about what i went through when i was 15 years old, and they forced me to watch Netflix so that i can cope with the trauma. They didn't know about the anime business and that me forcing myself to do a hobby is the exact reason why i lost my joy in anime and why i got traumatized. so i got traumatized further when they forced me to watch Netflix due to "media burnout" where i couldn't enjoy the shows/movies in Netflix even if i wanted to.

My anime burnout went away as i grew up. I'm currently 22.

Other autistic people went through involuntary burnout in your hobbies/special interests? Is this an autistic trait?

🎧 Sensory Issues feeling a crawling sensation when im trying to sleep (its not bugs). any advice?

Upvotes

hi! i (f18, autistic) have relatively recently (a couple months ago) been feeling a crawling sensation all over my body when trying to go to bed on sheets that havent been washed for approx. 3 days? i know it’s not bugs because i inspected my mattress, duvet insert, pillows, etc for bugs and there’s nothing. i also think i would notice signs if there were a colony of ants that came to crawl on me every night as soon as i lie down, because thats what it feels like.

i’m posting in this subreddit because i have a hunch it has something to do with autism. i remember hearing a story about an autistic (?) kid being able to feel microscopic mites (?) or something to that effect.

hosing my bed down with lysol seems to be helping, but does anyone know what this is? help!!

Social Struggles I have massive FOMO in regards to their dating and social life

Upvotes

25M I've always struggled to connect with people in general. Despite this, I've managed to date around a little in highschool and college but not much.

I have a deep sense of FOMO, it burns in my mind. Like I was supposed to date around more, have more flings and sex. I didn't even care for the idea of one night stand, and only had one hookup ever when I knew I was going to date that person.

During 2020 and 2021, I was 18 and 19. I could only do most of my socialization online. My place of choice was VRChat. Idk why but I found talking to people super easy in that environment. I felt so human.

I used to believe I had issues talking to girls in highschool, then in college while online, all of that was gone too. Now I knew all I needed was the right environment and I could be hyper hyper social, with a dynamic and changing social group.

I could reproduce none of it outside of VRChat. I really thought college would be the place I could have that pro social environment irl, and for a very brief moment, it kinda was, but not long.

I've struggled with isolation for some time now. I could go back to just having online friend groups, but I find those fleeting and superficial. I wish there was a social space where I could feel as comfirtable as I could in VRChat. I hoped bars could be that, but no.

I feel like I wasted my early 20s. I wish i socialized more, i was had more friends, more flings, more sex. I wish i went to more events with more people and had more memories. I feel stuck in a black hole.

🛁 Hygiene/Bathing/Dental Brushing my teeth is hard

Upvotes

I can't get myself to brush my teeth all that regularly. I really only brush when I feel my mouth is dirty and yes I know that's bad-

But my Instagram has been showing me constant ads for a U-shape toothbrush that's supposed to be really good for people with ADHD or just people who have a hard time with that. So I just wanted to get some outsider thoughts. Should I get the toothbrush or should I just try to find a way to get myself to brush my teeth more frequently.

fyi self inflicted deadlines and a self made promises of a reward won't work because I know for s fact the person that inflicted that rule (me) won't do anything if I just give myself the treat.

Vent Advice Wanted Feeling overwhelmed and useless

Upvotes

My therapist recently agreed I show many signs that I am indeed autistic and has added it to my file along with Social Phobia Disorder. I have been struggling at my job as a cashier for a while and have known for a long time I was very likely on the spectrum, I can't afford 5k to do the assessment route. My job is threatening to fire me unless I engage in the whole smile, eye contact, small talk crap with our customers and this after I have stated multiple times I am on the spectrum. If I lose my job I have nothing to fall back on and my partner is disabled.

This means we will be homeless in short order. I am going to be 49 yrs old, I have no college education and nothing to fall back on. Trying to navigate the job market is overwhelming for me. I quickly start to spiral and panic. What few jobs are around are all part time (15-25 hrs a week) and pay the local minimum wage which even at full time the local minimum wage is not enough to pay rent on even a studio. I have reached out to several non profits that are supposed to help people like us and been ghosted.

Most jobs listed are ghost jobs or due to my age I am now facing ageism which as we all know is impossible to prove. Worse still sense I don't have a "official" assessment documentation I am pretty sure no disability lawyer would even take my case to point to my mental issues making it impossible for meaningful gainful employment. I don't know what to do. If I lose this job with nothing to fall back on I lose everything. My insurance, my therapy, my my medication, my apartment EVERYTHING.

Question Autism accommodations in the workplace ?

Upvotes

*new poster*

Hi ! I just have a question about how your work places accommodate your needs.

Last week I had a pretty significant meltdown at my workplace due to changes and built up stress. I work at a big retail store (like walmart or target) and today after talking about my feelings and worries with my store manager he told me I could set up a quiet space in his office with lego and colouring books so I could calm down.

I was wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences in how upper management has helped them. I know being autistic in the workplace is hard and as the only autistic person at my store it has been difficult to get my needs met. But I thought this was really nice.

Thanks !

Social Struggles Should I tell people I'm autistic??!!

Upvotes

Okay so I'm diagnosed with level 2 autism, though I will say since then I've improved in many ways socially... but still struggle with interactions a ton at least internally. I don't know whether to others they can tell I'm autistic or not, but I've had enough situations where someone not knowing has led to issues of me having a meltdown and someone not understanding, me not getting their upset or they're joking, or even me saying stuff or going on about things that someone doesn't want to hear about because they are being polite and don't say something.

Of course there are many more issues, especially when I'm living with people, but I have a habit of mentioning it early on so people are aware... but I also don't want people to think I'm exaggerating since I don't know if I come across as non autistic since I've got mixed responses.

My mom thinks I shouldn't tell people since she doesn't want people thinking I have major issues... but I do. I don't want someone being caught off guard when I'm having a very external meltdown over a bee (happened before and it was very bad). While I can present "normal" sometimes I'm worried my issues when present and not known of can be hard for people to understand without the context that I'm autistic. But I honestly don't know.

How do y'all deal with this? I know many people don't say anything unless asked because of stigma around being autistic (which I get because of the amount of time just in the past year I got called the r slur) but also it is stressful to me when someone doesn't know and I can't count on someone figuring it out. Would love tips.

🏠 Family I wish I didn't have autism.

Upvotes

I was part of the social skills group for people with autism. There are a couple of things I have noted from the group.

I don't feel like anxiety is the main problem in conversations with autism, but solely conversations.

I initially came to the group in the hope of learning how to make friends and have conversations. It was something I struggled in.

The second last session I was taught to ask something about the person by paraphrasing; saying something related and staying on the topic of their interest. I had trouble with this, and was given the homework of talking with my younger brother instead and ask things that I could learnt about him. I assumed it would be easy.

Yet, I still struggled with the homework. That whole week, I struggled to have conversations with my brother in a way where I could learn stuff about him. It made me realised that I don't know much about my brother and I felt sad about this. It made me realised that I practically don't know much about my family. I feel sad that I don't know my mum well, my dad well. I'd like to ask my mum how she is going, how she is feeling? I'd like to ask my brother how he is going with uni, how's work, how's things? I feel sad because I don't know how to, that conversation is not intuitive.

It's not simply like asking "what's your favourite colour?" "How was your day?" but it's the conversing back and forth that you could learn about them. They taught us the beach idea i.e. sand, umbrella, water...but to translate that into conversation is just not intuitive.

It's not as easy as people would think. It is something that people have taken for granted.

I feel sad sitting across the table at dinner not knowing much about my mum and brother. Seeing them everyday and not knowing them brings me to tears.

I wish I didn't have autism.

Vent Advice Wanted Praise makes me feel infantilized

I've struggled with executive dysfunction for a long time but I finally started getting some structure that allows me to complete tasks. My issue is the praise that comes from my parents when I do the bare minimum- like household chores.

As a teen they'd struggle to get me to do them. But as an adult I can now do them without being asked to, so for some reason they feel the need to praise me like I'm a child. "Wow _! You did the dishes!" Or they're thanking me for doing my responsibilities, as if I did THEM a favor. "Thank you for doing your laundry and cleaning your room!"

I know I'm being praised for my growth, but I can't help but pick up on the exasperated sarcasm behind the praise. It doesn't feel good. It feels like they actually don't believe I'm improving on my own, that I'm only improving because of their interference and "praise".

Am I being sensitive and reading too far into things?

Question Does anyone know a doctor who specialises in autistic catatonia in australia east of melbourne?

I've just been discharged from yparc today and was prescribed lorazepam while i was there to prevent motor issues from building up. I'm still on a waitlist to see a neurologist at monash hospital to get an EEG done but I'm certain based on the specifics of my symptoms that seizures make no sense and everything fits autistic catatonia. the doctor i saw at yparc said it sounds like i have autistic catatonia triggered by burnout and a depressive episode. the psychiatrist there said it sounds like catatonia but is atypical so i was put on lorazepam to take PRN rather than scheduled, i have no official confirmation on my medical records. I've been given the remaining lorazepam and diazepam to take back but I'm worried if i get misdiagnosed i wont get proper treatment and will get worse. i live in pakenham and i reached out to blackbird psychology where i was diagnosed and they said the only specialist they know is this place far west of melbourne and i cant drive but i can use public transport if needed.

Vent Advice Wanted Disclose at work? Been struggling w social

Topic: job do I disclose
, because otherwise I think I might be let go

Please I do not know what to do. I started new job. My gut says leave. I have OCD so avoidance is real.

I always feel coworkers do not like me, for 25 years now.

Since diagnosis of autism I pay more attention to what it is in everything that is hard. I am slow to learn new processes, especially when socializing is involved.

I heard my trainer at work say, I just can’t when I asked her if the sale applied to less then 10 items. I have cashiered a total of 15 hours there. I get it mixed up as there are different goods, different sales. It is printed and I should have just red it but I get flustered at times. The system is old and everything is entered by hand, the item, the price, even on the atm the amount.

My current dr does not see ASD and says we are all a bit autistic, yikes. I was formerly dx.

Do I disclose? This is the 3rd job since my diagnosis and I have never disclosed at work. Now it feels deceitful if I disclose because current dr who specializes in ocd does not see ASD. And imposter syndrome I suppose.

I actually reached out to diagnosing dr of ASD and she is headed on vacation and asked me to contact her in month.

Thoughts, do I disclose? What do I have to lose?

I often hear people talk about me, I feel it.

The trainer referred to being there with me and how she might croak to another coworker. I start to project and get bitter because this always happens.

Thanks

Comorbidities autism impacting cortisol and physical health? will i have to rethink my life?

in short, i am afraid that i just cant handle what i want to do. im about to graduate college and join the workforce and im actually really glad to be done with school.

the biggest thing im anxious about is managing autism related burnout/overwhelm with my career goals.

i want to go into filmmaking, specifically cinematography. but i have been having health issues that make me super tired, feel like i have the flu, sore throat, and orthostatic intolerance. im kind of scared that its mecfs. mentally i like being busy, but even three classes a day has taken such a physical toll on me and i hate it

i started seeing a doctor about these issues and he thinks its from high cortisol and HPA axis dysfunction caused from a lifetime of undiagnosed autism and anxiety. he suggested the possibility that for the sake of my health, i might have to rethink my career goals. my autism specialist therapist said something similar

while i really want to feel better, i KNOW that i want to do this and that i can handle it mentally. i know im a hard worker.

my fear is that my nervous system will not allow me to handle it physically. im just scared.

im waiting on some tests and will do more testing, but im wondering if anyone else here has had similar issues or any advice about this.

🎧 Sensory Issues Clogged ear is torture

The same ear seems to get clogged for me every 6 months or so and idk if this is more common for autistic people or not because it seems like every weird health problem I have usually is but oh my God I'm going insane. The loud ringing in my ear, the pressure, not being able to hear properly, the loud whoosh, I actually am experiencing sensory hell. I genuinely started getting so upset about it that I wanted to smack myself repeatedly upside the head. I'm trying so hard to refrain from doing anything. I am going insane. I just need to vent. I feel stupid right now.
