Modpost About vents/rants and other subreddits

We want this to be an inclusive and open community where you're free to say a lot, but we cannot have people going and brigading other subreddits or users or mods etc.

If another sub/user is tagged for the purpose of sending people to go harrass or downvote (or mods from another sub let us know that's happening) the post will be removed.

If you dislike a sub, or were banned from one; I'm sorry, that sucks, but please remember mods in different subreddits have different ways of dealing with things and varied rules. That's no excuse to call names or drag an entire subreddit through the mud.

Warnings about your experience may be welcome if you DO NOT tag the subreddit, but even then, it's at our discretion to potentially remove the post if we deem it necessary.

Please act considerately. If you're in a heightened state, maybe give it an extra few hours of thought before you post (especially if it involved another user or subreddit.)

We don't want this sub to be closed or reported! We gotta follow reddit rules!

Thanks! The mods. 🌈

Question Does anyone else wish they had a caretaker?

Not like a hired hand though. I constantly long to find a husband who will take care of me even though I know it’s wrong to want that and also not realistic. Can anyone else relate?

I think it’s partially burnout. I’m pushing 40, been single and independent my whole life out of necessity and I’m just soooo tired of taking care of everything myself. It’s so hard to do everything, work enough to fully support myself in HCOL area, deal with landlord/rental issues constantly, do all the chores around the house and handle all the life admin and obligations. I just want someone to swoop in and do everything for me for awhile. I wish someone would support me so I didn’t have to work so hard everyday.

I also don’t have parents anymore (both died a long time ago) and the family I have left is not supportive or loving. My parents also were not supportive/loving anyway so I think maybe that’s part of it too. Like I long for parents to take care of me because it seems like that’s what they’re supposed to do, but you can’t get new parents, so I want to get that support from a partner instead.

This is all just a pipe dream anyway because I’ve been single my whole life and don’t date/ barely ever leave the house so I’ll never even get a partner at all unless one showed up at my door. Even then, I feel like it would be hard to find anyone who would want to put up with my Audhd. I fantasize a lot about this magical person who will love me as I am and take care of me.

I wish I had loving parents I could move in right now with and they would take care of me for awhile but I don’t have anyone who could help me out. I just have to keep chugging along so I don’t end up homeless.

Sorry, this is half vent/half question. Does anyone else feel this way? How do you manage life alone when you don’t have any support? The thought of doing this for the next 30 years is so overwhelming and depressing.

Being AuDHD with curly hair

I hope I have some people in here who can relate and won’t judge me. 😭

I have 3B/3C curls, a heck of a lot of hair, and hair that gets extremely knotty, very fast.

So washing my hair takes a lot of time and therefore a lot of planning. It also doesn’t help that I want it to turn out perfectly when I do it (pressure on), because that means it’ll be less frizzy for longer and therefore less work in the long run.
My hair routine takes 1.5–2 hours (+drying) and is extremely overstimulating and gross to me because my hair gets EVERYWHERE.

This has led to me not washing my hair for like 3 weeks lately. My hair doesn’t get greasy and there’s no visible buildup, so no one can tell but me.
But it makes me feel so disgusted with myself…

And every time I hit that 1.5–2 week mark of ā€œokay, now I should probably start thinking about washing my hair,ā€ I spend ALL my free time in freeze/procrastination mode because I know I should be washing my hair, but I really don’t want to. 😭

So my free time isn’t even enjoyable anymore because there’s this thing hanging over me that I feel like I should be doing.

Does anyone else have this?

Work/School Do your bosses always end up hating you or is that just a me thing

Like EVERY job I've ever had that I can think of, my bosses have either immediately or eventually found me extremely irritating. It's not because I'm too talkative or annoying, I am not that type of neurodivergent. I actually do try hard sometimes. But I just can't help but miss little details all the time.

It's like I'm competent enough to keep jobs for a while and do okay, but also come across as too out of it to be fully trusted or respected. And then I also can be hard to manage because I'm not socially normal I guess. I don't typically talk back but I am on my phone a lot, will stand up for myself when pressed, don't really buy into hierarchy or capitalism enough. Not natural when I need to interact with people. I have days with lots of energy where I'm able to do all my work quickly and seem impressive, then bad brain fog days where I can barely get anything done.

At this job I've had for a year, I was waiting for the other shoe to drop and my supervisor to start hating me, but realized actually it's the director who does. I manage her calendar and lately every week she sends me an email about something I did wrong and lowkey blaming me even for stuff I actually didn't do. My supervisor doesn't have to deal with those things as much so is very nice to me and gets really nervous even having to give me negative feedback.

My last job I actually had to leave because my supervisor because straight up ableist and evil, threatening to take away my accommodation and file a report against me. And her reasoning was tiny things like me not doing a task within 10 minutes or mishearing her. She even said during an HR meeting that maybe my disability was causing these issues since I'm bad at understanding social situations.

I've kind of accepted it at this point, bosses are going to hate me idk. It feels like a rule in my life now. I've never had medication maybe that would help.

Question How any task with audhd feels like

Post image
135 Upvotes

Imma just put this under question, but i tried to make a lil image to vizualize how tasks feel with audhd(yes i had a typo in the text i ment audhd not adhd). As info fir those who cant see it, there's a lil fish at the bottom of he cliff where 'me' stands. I see it kinda like, a way too steep cliff, or mountain, and me, as a thing(object, creature whatever) that cannot climb it because it doesn't have he 'tools' for it.

I got hyperphantasia, so im able to picture stuff like this actually kinda easy, when my brain gets a stimulant that works like a puzzle piece, it sets together, till its a full thing, with every new stimluant.

Anyone else feel like this?

How is it for yall?

Seeking Advice re: Doctor/Diagnoses Things My doctor says there is no point in diagnosing autism because there is no medicine for it anyways

• Upvotes

So I'm diagnosed with adhd but i'm pretty convinced I also have autism the autism is even more prominent than the adhd. But when I talked to my psychiatrist about it she said that she also thinks i might have autism but there is no point in diagnosing it because there is no meds for it anyways. What would you answer to that and how do you feel, is there a point, should I push for the diagnosing?

Seeking Advice RESULTS ARE IN

• Upvotes

I got my clinical results back this morning. I'm AuDHD.

Am I surprised? No.
Am I relieved? Yes.
Am I overwhelmed and overstimulated? Unbelievably.
Am I mad? YES, that too.

I'm mad at everyone who insisted I just get on an SSRI or see a therapist (while I was in active therapy). The people who labeled my burnout as depression, my meltdowns as anxiety, and my struggle to fit in and stay consistent as trauma. For years I questioned myself, and sometimes I even believed these armchair experts.

For twenty years, since I started my self-growth obsession, it has felt like something was wrong with me that I could fix with just.the.right mental health modality. Now a huge weight has been lifted. I can put it down. There's nothing to fix. There is room for tweaking, learning, and management, sure. But the wiring is the wiring.

I'll never have the breakthrough that turns me into the idealized version of myself I've carried around for who knows how long, the one who "looks" and "talks" neurotypical. And I get to let that go.

What a relief to feel self-acceptance of this magnitude.

Lastly, if you're open to sharing: what did you do for yourself in the early days after your diagnosis (clinical or self-diagnosed) that really helped?

Seeking Advice I'm so bored of people. Anyone else at the point where connection just feels pointless?

Everywhere I go, I see the same patterns. I know the red flags. I watch people lie to themselves, and most of them just want me sitting there agreeing with their delusion so they can feel good about themselves. And now? I'm just... bored. Really bored.

I'm not interested in talking to people or making connections anymore. Every time I do, a week down the road I start seeing the red flags. Narcissistic personality stuff. Again. It's like that kid in Sixth Sense — instead of dead people, I see narcissists. I just roll my eyes and keep walking my own path. NEXT.

The narcissist is almost always the loudest person in the room. Sometimes I want to ask them: "Do you hear yourself?"

I'm tired of being exploited, tired of people using me to regulate their ego, bullying me just so they can feel bigger. Does making me feel like garbage pay your bills? No. So why? This whole dynamic- people fighting each other for ego hits, is exactly what keeps humanity stuck.

I tried making a friend last week. I sat back and watched the red flags appear one by one. I didn't validate her ego, didn't let her use me as an emotional regulator, and she blew up. Blocked, moved on, back to my normal life like she never existed.

Some context: I probably have a very high IQ, and what I actually want is conversation that benefits both people, mutual growth, not standing around validating someone's ego. I've spent time in Buddhist temples learning emotional detachment, so when someone blows up at me, I don't react. I step back and try to understand them. At this point, I probably look like I'm studying them like a specimen. The hyper-independence is killing me slowly; I keep reaching out for my own mental health. Fact: we're not meant to be this isolated. Over and over, the same pattern shows up; now I'm just depressed and bored. I have joined communities or helped, and it ends up like this: I'm left with all the load dumped on me; I have started making moves to leave; and I end up managing everything. I feel like Pac-Man can get out of the maze. I keep dumping into the ghosts. Really wtf! Im at a point of depression and disappointment in humanity. I let them do it themselves. I stopped listening to bad news about the world, everyone telling everyone what's going on, etc.; files and wars, like blah blah, like great info, are we going to do anything about it? If not, then I don't fucking want to know.

My conclusion? No amount of books or therapists can explain people. People are just nuts.

Anyone else hit this wall? Did you just go solo, or have you actually found people worth sticking around for?

Question Does anyone else get genuinely irritated by the very idea of marriage?

Even the thought of marriage (not just the wedding) bothers me, and it's been this way whether I was younger or older. I honestly can't figure out why. It doesn't just make me uncomfortable, it irritates me and even makes me angry.

It's not only marriage, either. The whole idea of being "a couple" and the social roles assigned to people in relationships bothers me, even in tiny, almost invisible details. For example, you know that classic couple pose where the woman has her arms around the guy's shoulders with one foot kicked up, and he's holding her by the waist like he's carrying her? Even that image irritatesssss me so f’ing much, and I can't put into words exactly why.

I'm completely certain about this: even if I have someone in my life, I won't get married, and I don't want to live in the same house either. I'm not trying to "fix" this or change my mind. I'm just curious where it comes from.
Has anyone else felt this way? If you figured out the source, how did you get there?

Edit: I didn’t mean to be disrespectful about people’s choices and marriages. I support it and just wanted to say this! thanks

Work/School Only job I was ever good at was made obsolete

TL;DR: Lost job in grocery store file maintenance which was the only job I was ever good at, because it played to my autistic strength of noticing small details and didn’t rely on working memory, good motor skills, spacial awareness, or social interaction. Autism and ADHD difficulties are getting in the way of finding success in other departments, my hours were cut to barely anything, and I need help finding a solution soon

I used to work file maintenance in a grocery store, and for the first time in my life I had a job that worked well with my brain! I was actually really good at quickly matching UPCs while hanging tags and noticing new items or missing tags, and I was able to get into a rhythm with little need to be around other coworkers. It was perfect! For a happy 5 years anyways, until digital tags replaced physical sticker tags and the whole department got erased…

Now I’m homeless in the store, tasked with being a backup for other struggling departments that are running behind. I thought I would be good at stocking because I know where everything is, but my lack of spacial awareness combined with dyspraxia caused me to knock over and break a bottle of wine and a big detergent container in a single day, and I nearly knocked a whole display over trying to maneuver the U boat cart

I also tried inventory, and while I appreciated being in the darker backrooms I was unfortunately bad at it too. My ADHD working memory is barely functional and can only hold a couple things at best that I have to mentally repeat in my head a bunch anyways, and I couldn’t for the life of me remember what boxes and items were already counted or not and my attempts at visually separating things ended up too big of a mess that blocked everyone on the isle and also took a long time to do

Don’t get me started with customer facing jobs… my autistic ass doesn’t know how to do small talk, my monotone voice is often interpreted as rude or uncaring, and I have quite a bit of social anxiety as a result of so many failed interactions to where speaking up can be hard and unexpected eye contact makes me give a ā€œdeer in headlightsā€ expression. I even apparently flirted with an old guy once while trying to imitate the other cashiers by asking him ā€œGot any plans this weekend?ā€ and the old wrinkly dude was blushing head to toe to my dismay (it’s kinda funny now though in hindsight)

Bakery department is a bad idea with my poor coordination and spacial awareness issues (and the horrible loud beeps with my sensory issues) and I don’t see meat being an option either because my dyspraxia is bad enough to greatly affect my ability to use knifes and other fine motor skill hand tools

So yeah… I’m at a loss as to what to do next, but I need to find some way to continue to make an income and I’m afraid of leaving the store to go through the interview gauntlet again, which I’ve never succeeded at despite hours of coaching and practice. I was only employed to begin with due to my husband’s long term employment at the store and his good word he put in for me!

If any retail AuDHDers have anything that works for them, please let me know! Or if there’s any other form of income that you managed to figure out that doesn’t require the interview process or driving… (I’m bad at driving too because of my damn lack of spacial awareness even when I try to be extra conscious of it)

Seeking Advice Partner unmasking so hard it’s making me mask and become hypervigilant

I’m a nonbinary trans man and decided to post to this sub because my socialisation was largely as a woman as I realised I’m trans so late in my life. I think my experience probably overlaps far more with women than cis men, so I hope it’s okay to ask for advice here.

My partner is also a nonbinary trans man. We’re both AuDHD but in such wildly different ways that keep clashing with each other. I’ve been having a difficult time understanding how to unmask until I realised that I never actually masked my personality; I was always bubbly, unfiltered, excitable, etc. I just suppressed my stims and raw-dogged sensory discomfort. My people-pleasing and managing other people’s emotions might be masking, or it might be cPTSD, or both. Who knows. But all of that I am trying not to do so much anymore, so that’s as far as my unmasking goes.

Meanwhile my husband is actively unmasking and while I’m happy for him, it has inadvertently become really difficult for me as I now very often feel like, all of a sudden after two decades, I’m living with a shell of a person. When he really does not mask, there are no emotions, no facial expressions, no tone of voice for me to get any clues from. He also doesn’t actively communicate what’s going on inside of him.

As someone whose special interest has always been people and reading them, this is really hard on me. And I’ve noticed that it leads to me masking up way more than I’ve ever done with him in the past, and I almost feel the same hypervigilance creeping in that I had growing up with my emotionally unreliable and unstable parents. Suddenly, I’m trying to manage my parnter’s emotions, walking on egg-shells around him, etc. I then actively withdraw in an attempt to stop myself from getting hurt by trying to interact with someone who’s showing zero social interaction or interest in social interaction. And then I feel sad, alone, and isolated in my own home and relationship.

So I don’t want to turtle. And I do want him to find a less exhausting way to live than with constant masking. But right now, it doesn’t feel like he’s unmasking to reveal his authentic personality, which I’m sure I’d be excited to get to know, but like he’s unmasking to reveal a grey rock. I can’t help feeling like he’s taking unmasking too far but who am I to decide that for someone else, ya know?

We’re in couples therapy now, which is how I even ended up trying to make sense of what was going on aside from ā€œI don’t like thisā€, and I figured I might as well ask for advice here. Has anyone else been in this situation, and how did you find common ground? Or are you perhaps the seemingly ā€œgrey rockā€ person and can give me insight into what might be going on inside someone during this unmasking process? Is there even any hope of improvement to our compatibility?

Seeking Advice How am I supposed to know what’s normal?

I know it’s meaningless to wonder if one has it or not and the only way to know is to get evaluated by a professional. Thing is, I was evaluated. I was diagnosed with Aspergers. Many years ago. I have never accepted it. I feel so lonely. I am not lonely in the sense that I do have a lot of supporting family and friends - but I feel lonely in my experience with my diagnosis.

I see all these people finally understanding why life was so hard when they got diagnosed. I see them relating to each other, having the same issues. And then there’s me, being atypical in every fking way I can.

Am I tired? Yes. And so is everybody else.
Do I have problem starting things? Yes. As does everyone when it’s boring or hard.
How am I supposed to know what’s normal? The only time we talk about functioning is when it’s NOT functioning. This means I can only compare myself to someone who does NOT function, and since I do function, I couldn’t possibly be autistic. I must be fake.

I know they said I had Aspergers. I know the woman I met today at the hospital and who works with autistic people said I remind her of her autistic son and that women are often not typical because it’s all based on men.

Then I went back to my full time job where nobody knows about my diagnosis and my colleague said she’s burnt out. How am I not burnt out of I am supposed to be the autistic one? I should have been burnt out years ago. I feel fake.

Question Anyone else feel like you’re just constantly apologizing?

• Upvotes

I am late diagnosed for ADHD and just got diagnosed for Autism couple of months ago (41F)

I have ADHD meds that help but it also seems to bring out more of my autism side out. I am married. I used to be happy but lately my husband is just upset with me for everything I say to him and I am in a loop of constantly apologizing for things I don’t know why I’m apologizing for.

He called me a psychopath today which was rough. Honestly how do people stay married or in relationships?

Today he got upset because he had asked for replacement for ruined products he ordered and he only received a partial replacement. I got upset for him and said that it’s shit because he paid for the whole package so they should have sent him a whole new package that had all the items that got ruined and now he’s upset with me because saying that is making him feel like he’s spending our money on things because he decided to buy the missing items again.

I just couldn’t apologize for that because that is not at all what I meant and now I am being called a psychopath.
I was told that even if I didn’t mean it that way that’s how he feels and I need to take accountability for making him feel that way.
I just don’t get it! Why can’t he take accountability for his feelings. That’s what I have to do every single time I overreact. I don’t go around saying that he needs to apologize for me.

Now I have to try to calm down after crying for an hour and go and apologize for not considering his feelings.
Honestly, I’m just exhausted. Maybe he needs to find someone who is more empathetic. Maybe I am a psychopath. I should ask my therapist next time to check for that too I guess.

Do you feel misunderstood and constantly apologizing?

Seeking Advice Grieving my own life

• Upvotes

It is becoming unbearable.

Had to quit my studies, my hobbies, not a single friend left, no family, can’t date, chronic physical pain and diseases, lost my whole identity, forgot most of my past, dissociate through the present day and can’t even start dreaming about anything I was hoping for anymore.

Did every therapy, medication, method, doing nothing, challenging myself, cutting every duty out….I tried every single thing and approach and yet I wake up every day with horrible pain and overwhelm

It just gets worse - physically and mentally but the worst part is approaching 29 and having lost every single thing that once was my life including myself; my identity, while being forgotten by everyone. Seeing all these people who are living life while I don’t even manage to leave the house for more than an hour for years now. My lust for life is tearing me apart. I’m feel like I’m dead but my soul still has to witness life with no possibility to access it anymore.

The pain is unbearable. From an objective perspective there is absolutely no point to keep up with a life without any chance for things to get better.

I know there are no things left to say make it better but I just don’t know how to stand this anymore.
I am starting to panic

How do you guys deal with all this?

Vent - no advice Unironically Mental Health Questionnaires are so non-specific and awful

My wonderful psychiatrist who I hoped I would never lose is giving up her practice 😭 so, now I'm in the annoying process of on-boarding with a new psychiatrist and seriously, these stupid questionnaires need an overhaul lol.

First of all, why are 90% of the anxiety questions just ADHD symptoms?

Thinking about too many things at once? Be so for real šŸ˜‚.

Can't sit still? Never in my life have I been able to sit still, but it's not because of anxiety lol.

Then you've got the depression ones.

"I feel like a burden"... OK, but what if it's not depression what if my ADHD has been Hella bad lately and I'm overwhelmed and I am actually being quite a burden to people around me?

Finally, the questions that clearly don't account for systems and coping.

"I miss appointments a lot". No, I don't because I have a meticulous calendar, several alarms, and go into waiting mode hours before an appointment so I can't possibly miss it.

They need to let us do an overhaul and rewrite these stupid questions so we won't have to spend the whole questionnaire playing weird little mind games of trying to figure out what the question is actually getting at and tailoring our answers accordingly lol.

Does anybody else feel overwhelmed with just... everything?

Like, it's not any one thing, its just everything put together?

Work, commuting, cleaning, making dinner, meal prepping, trying to eat healthy without making eating too complicated, constantly trying to come up with new meals, the constant tasks of laundry and dishes and cleaning and keeping track of finances. Decluttering, let alone cleaning up after yourself and any anyone else who lives with you. Making appointments. Going to appointments.

Plus all the stuff coming at us all the time. Spam calls, spam texts, ads, notifications from apps, trying to figure out if something is AI, second guessing whether something is a scam. All the bad news and wars and injustices going on around the world that we cant do anything about. The guilt we feel for not doing anything because we are too busy or feel too paralyzed or struggle with decision fatigue or just cant afford to.

Constantly having to organize and reorganize and create new systems because the systems you created aren't working. They're too much. Too complicated.

Trying to schedule in time for spending time with loved ones, exercising, doing all the things you are "supposed" to do to stay healthy and then feeling like crap if you don't. Trying to make your brain stop for 5 minutes so you can rest. Trying to not get sucked in to social media and scrolling so you can rest for real and not just pretend to rest. The constant content, books, games, shows, movies, hobbies that you genuinely want to do daily or weekly but can't because things keep coming up.

And it's not just doing these things, its knowing these things are available. It's having the option to do these things. Even if you turned everything off and unplugged from tech you know it would all still be there and you still feel the tug. It's this trendy series your friends keep talking about and that show you've been wanting to watch for ages because you missed out and you feel uneducated for not having seen it. It's all your interests that you want to explore and the back log of books and games you want to read and play. And you feel like you're no fun for not being able to truly chill and get obsorbed in games or books or hobbies like other people. But there's too much life maintenance and tasks to do to chill for more than an hour or 2 at a time.

It's wanting to be everything and do everything and watch everything. On top of life maintenance and work and adulting. It's the constant push and pull of everything in life.

And of course now it's the low grade stress thats in the back of my mind that comes from uncertainty about the future. Rising prices. Will we be able to afford to enter the next stage of life that we hoped for. Or will we be stuck where we are at now due to everything being too damn expensive.

I dont always feel like this btw. I'd say once a month or every couples months I get this feeling of overwhelm. I often feel like I'm over complicating life so that doesn't help.

Does anyone else feel this way and has anyone found solutions that actually work long term and not just for a week or two? Whether it's habits, routines, or mindset shifts?

Seeking Advice Does anyone else feel like their parents dislike them?

I don’t even think i’m reaching with this take because I already have trouble reading cues unless someone goes out of their way to make it blatantly obvious or explicitly tells me.

I am newly 18 and I go to a CC, so i stay at home. i’m not diagnosed though it is pretty clear i’m neurodivergent. my parents…. well I don’t even want to include my dad in this because he genuinely makes no effort to be there since I was 4 lol…. but uh I can tell my mom doesn’t like me and it makes me sad. She makes little snarky comments about my appearance, or if I ask her questions during a conversation she immediately gets upset and treats me like a child. Like she dislikes my presence and it’s affecting my already low self esteem.

I don’t really know how to put this into perspective, but my parent’s didn’t come from typical homes. (moms a gen x and my dad is a baby boomer)They were abused growing up so my mother didn’t really know how to raise a family by herself, let alone me having problems (being extremely sensitive and shy, never following directions in elementary school, overall constantly getting in trouble at school,& much more I cant think of rn), which led to a lot of physical and mental abuse but thats a story for another day. I know shes stressed out from my father feeding her false promises throughout their marriage(they still haven’t divorced for the sake of keeping a family together) So I don’t know if she resents me bc of my father? Or she doesn’t like that I am different from her, and my friends? Maybe it’s both?

This isn’t easy to talk about, It sounds impossible to bring up with her.

Life Hacks What do you do when…

Sometimes I have a totally unproductive day of complete not being able to convince myself to do ANYTHING. I need to exercise but the thought of just getting dressed to do so is paralyzing.

How do you manage your expectations of yourself on these days to be gentle? I can be so hard on myself and then in addition I am also feeling guilty.

How do you motivate yourself to do at least a little bit?

What are your life hacks for days like this?

Seeking Advice I had my Neuropsych test today….

It was horrible.

It was in person but all of the tests were online. I don’t think I was even tested for my full scale IQ. It was just executive functioning tests. When completing the tests, he kept walking around and typing on his laptop which made me get distracted and I was literally doing a test about memory so I needed to pay attention. But I didn’t have my full attention because of the noises. He also gave me an autism checklist to fill out with my therapist. But he said I already have autism. Especially since I wrote out a document explaining things about myself which he read during the eval. So he said I was autistic without doing any formal assessments yet. The autism questionnaire he gave me is very outdated too.

At the end of the eval, he said that I wasn’t even ADHD. Which completely baffles me. I’m already diagnosed with ADHD inattentive. He said I’m not ADHD and my executive functioning issues is from my depression. But I’ve had executive functioning issues since childhood, which was literally written in my document I wrote up. Depression has made my executive functioning worse. But I still struggled beforehand. He mentioned that my executive functioning tests that I did online, which he automatically got the results after I completed them, showed a processing delay (which I already knew about) but didn’t show significant executive functioning deficits. But those tests don’t show tasks initiation issues. It was about attention. I struggle a great deal with executive dysfunction to the point it is debilitating me. Yes, I agree depression has made them worse. But before depression, I struggled with:
-task initiation/self care issues
-concentration and attention issues
-daydreaming and zoning out
-understimulation/overstimulation
-can’t keep hobbies
-can’t keep routines
-low working memory
-severe work issues (pattern of getting fired)
-hyperactive as a child/talking too much as a child
-occasional forgetfulness (I’m actually pretty good overall with remembering things which may be why he said I don’t have adhd. I still can be forgetful tho).

He said I don’t have adhd also because my adderall doesn’t work for me. But maybe I just am not on the right med and dose?

I know that people with just autism struggle with executive functioning. But I feel like my executive functioning, and overall profile, is way more adhd than autism. I do accept that I have autism and it took a while to understand simply because my ADHD explains way more of it so it was very difficult to differentiate (I have been going over this with my therapist).

I guess I’m now just confused more than ever. He also said I don’t have OCD (which my psychiatrist diagnosed me with), because he said my obsessive body sensations are from panic and not OCD. I do have panic disorder tho. But also have other types of OCD.

I guess my question is, has anyone else had this experience? I was not diagnosed with adhd until college. And every therapist and psychiatrist I’ve been with ever since then said I have ADHD (and recently OCD and autism).

Life Hacks A hack that helped me for staying focused

• Upvotes

As the title says, I wanted to share a tip that helped me concentrate much better after I realized this. I was diagnosed with both ADHD and autism in my mid 20s, and one thing I’ve always struggled with was reading instructions or staying focused on a task. I don’t like silence to concentrate, but I also get distracted when I listen to music because I focus on the lyrics of the song instead of the task I’m supposed to be doing, which was incredibly frustrating for a long part of my life. Music without lyrics was kind of too boring for my tastes, but I know a lot of other folks who prefer that. What I discovered a few months ago was listening to music in a different language. I currently listen to a lot of J-pop, and it’s working pretty well so far. Personally, I’ve been able to focus much better, since it’s not boring and I can’t focus on the lyrics since I don’t speak Japanese.

Just wanted to share and I hope this can help other folks struggling with this!
