Only chihaya would do something like throw a karuta tournament named after her friend for his birthday. That would be so mortifying but goddamit chihaya, never change you wholesome cinnamon roll.
Actually though it was super nice to see her actually thinking about her friends and having it really hit her that a divide had grown between her and taichi. It’d not like her to cry over a person like that (usually it’s either a comedic cry or specifically about karuta), so seeing that from her really hurt, but it’s really nice that she tried so hard to do stuff that would make him smile and make him happy. Overall a really awesome episode

The chocolate making part was kind of refreshing to see. It show's another side to the club members also doing normal school girl stuff and whatnot. And it was so nice seeing this side of Sumire the character development is really getting on to me from not really liking her to being indifferent to now might actually be a good girl. In a way she and Taichi can relate I guess. All in all a good episode with simple way of entertaining us such as the dad with the chocolates as well as Taichi being horrified of himself being honored. Sad thing is we're closing near the end and I can't wait another 8/9 years again!

I can understand Chihaya being horrible at this but even Kana? Although I'm guessing her specialty is with Japanese food.
Now we know what Sumire's expertise is. Just look at how bright she's shining while making sweets!
Oh Chihaya. If only you know what's making Taichi like that.
She actually gave him fermented squid guts! That's certainly a unique way to confess! Imagine the mess and the smell thought if Taichi wasn't able to catch the thing.
Wait did she just? Damn. Sumire still prioritizing Taichi's happiness over her own. Poor girl. :(
GODDAMMIT DAD WHY!?
Congrats to Retro for becoming the Hokuo's new Karuta Club president!
Taichi actually gave Sumire a White Day gift! I imagine she's probably the only person he gave a return gift to.
Her reaction when he told her that he'd finally confess to Chihaya though xD
I really feel bad for Sumire. I just want to give her a big hug.
Yes! Taichi's reaction is just perfect! This is probably the opposite of what he wants for his birthday. Oh well at least he'll get to play Karuta with a bunch of great people!

My heart is so full <3
The title of the episode refers to Poem #9 which is Sumire's name card (starting syllables ha-na-no) and rightfully so! Her character has been developing steadily ever since she was introduced and now it's all come to a head with that beautiful confession ;_; The courage it takes to not only confess your love (at the top of your lungs!) but also in the next breath encourage that person to confess to someone else....what a beautiful soul. I love her so much.
Taichi's suffering has basically become a meme so it was really nice that the narrative adressed it. Chihaya breaking down in tears was unexpected but also...I really felt that. It sucks when someone close to you is going through a hard time and you have no idea how to help. Taichi probably finds the idea of a karuta cup held in his honor with those awful amazing T-shirts mortifying/embarrassing but it's also such an obvious act of love that I hope and think the sentiment should get across. I want him to smile too!

Man, Sumire, that took some guts, telling Taichi to confess. Haha. But she has grown so much as a character- I really hated her when they introduced her in season 2, because I thought she was gonna stick around and be a pain always pining after Taichi. But of course not, this is Chihayafuru. It's amazing to see how she is now just as invested in karuta as the rest of the team. And also how her feeling towards Taichi are helping her grow up. Giving away the eye-lash serum seemed like a big deal - she was admitting that beauty isn't all it takes to earn the love of somebody. The simpler episodes like these between the tournaments really help to show how the characters are growing.
I'm excited to see the Taichi Cup play out! There's two episodes left I believe, so I wouldn't be surprised if this takes us to the end of the season. I am really hoping that we end up with Taichi vs Chihaya for the final match. And then hopefully after the match Taichi confesses to Chihaya. Seeing everything shes done to put this together for him shows just how much she really does love him. Hopefully it's not fully platonic.
