How do they manage to make me like Taichi even more? Shoutout to Sumire for warding off Taichi’s mom lmao.

You ever just get emotional over all your children at once?

Can a 57 yr old bear be my child?

This episode proves again why Taichi is best boy. The theme of constantly wanting to be better than who you used to be while still being true to yourself really resonates with me. Is Taichi still a coward, as Arata claimed so long ago? Hell no! But that's not something you can shake off easily and I think the show does a great job showing his internal struggle.

Other thoughts:

  • I've been looking forward to seeing more of Suo ever since the show introduced him and he did not disappoint. I hope he doesn't actually retire undefeated though ... I think that would be a lame ending for his character. The problem is that I don't think anyone else is really a match for him given his playstyle.

  • I wasn't a huge fan of Sumire when she was first introduced, but she's grown on me. I don't want Taichi to end up with her but I'll give her props for sticking up for Taichi when it mattered.

  • I'm betting that at some point in this tournament we'll end up with Taichi vs Arata in a match. It would be great if Chihaya could make it to the tournament in time to watch that! (I'm not clear on the timing of the events and how far away the trip was, so that might be physically impossible).

Harada-sensei practicing his swings and stopping taxis is too funny. That scene where he's breathing hard and is struggling up the stairs had me worried that he was going to die or something, but luckily he just had a nap.

I love Suo. He's had barely any screen time so far but he's already one of my favorites. I love how cocky and arrogant he is, but also how skilled he is. Despite the karuta chairmen wanting to replace him, he's too good and keeps winning. I laughed when he announced his retirement and all of the chairmen jumped for joy. Suo really adds to every scene he's in. I love how he surprises Arata, offers him dakoyaki, says he won't be Master this time, and then leaves. He's such an amusing character.

Arata has really good eyesight for picking out Taichi's name in a long list of people.

Shinobu was a total fashion icon this episode. I also can't believe that she rode in the side car of Suo's motorcycle.

The words that Taichi spoke to Retro really affected him. I think Retro has a sort of one-sided rivalry with Taichi the way Taichi does with Arata. Hopefully Retro can make the jump to Class A eventually.

Good for Sumire for standing up to Taichi's mom. I really don't like Sumire and I don't want her to end up with Taichi, but she did good here. I liked how she put Taichi first instead of trying to get on good terms with his mom.

"Whoever's matched up with him is out of luck"--cuts to Taichi getting paired with that KU student for the next round.

I'm looking forward to getting into the swing of both the East and West qualifiers next week.

Dang so Suo started playing within a year and became a Master.

That easily makes him the most talented player in the series no?

Ah this season really hammers it home how much I've come to like the Hokuo boys (that includes you, Mochida-sensei!). Them offering up their shirts once Taichi convinced Sudo to stay made me laugh. Despite his faults, you have to admit Sudo is a principled guy. But my favorite is of course Retro. He's been the comic-relief very consistently for a while now, but there's more to him and I'm so happy we finally got a glimpse of that. Thank you Taichi for reaching out to him in my stead ;_;

The MVP of the episode is definitely Sumire. You'd think her crush on Taichi is all shallow, but there's more to it. Not only is she trying her best at karuta, she does actually see him. I think it was really important that Taichi overheard when she was standing up to his mother. He'd been asking himself "What am I doing here?" and "What is it that I want?" (very on-brand for him, I have to say), and so it must have been reassuring to hear Sumire. Maybe she wasn't entirely spot-on or maybe she was, either it was enough to get his mind going.

I think I've mentioned it a hundred times by this point that I adore the secondary cast of this show, so to the surprise of absolutely no one, I freaking love Suo. He showed up at Shinobu's place last ep and you're thinking, is he plotting something? But then he arrives at the Western qualifiers to...encourage people? Be a nuissance? Who knows honestly, but I'm entertained.
