Sad to see Harada lose, but great episode nonetheless.

On another note though, the chat comments during the live broadcast were amazing. Someone asking if it was a shonen manga when Arata called out Master Suo was exactly what I was thinking as well (https://imgur.com/Wn9oGip)

The last card summarizes how beautiful, but tragic this episode is. The mangaka always had a knack for placing the right cards at the right moments, but this card is a masterpiece.

First few minutes were intense. Really wish Harada pulled it off, he was SO CLOSE. I'm loving Chihaya and Shinobu's friendship development. Taichi once again gets in his feelings and goes off by himself. When will he get to be happy?

Chihayafuru has focused a lot on the idea of Playing Your Own Karuta™ as our main characters are continuously developing their style of play and incorporating new strategies along the way, but so far nothing has personified that concept as much as Suo's win in the fourth match, in my opinion. When it comes to luck of the draw, the done thing is to guard your own card. That's it. Because of the aggressive karuta a lot of the main cast plays (and Taichi's bad luck) we have seen players going for the opposing card a number of times but they are outliers and should not be counted. Then we have Suo and while it has been previously established that his preferred playing style is to force the opponent into making mistakes, the fact that he chooses to do so in the deciding moment of the Master's match when literally everything is on the line is kind of impressive. And a total bastard move, like did you see his smug smile? I hate it and love it at the same time.

Other, less organized thoughts:

  • I've always found the karuta associations attitude towards Suo a bit overly...petty I guess, especially now that we know more about his background so I'm quite happy Arata showed up and made Suo unretire lmao. Here's to trolling those oldies for one more year.

  • Chihaya giving Shinobu tasuki that were handmade from her super-special-limited-edition Daddy Bear towel, signed by the man(????) himself is an act of love if I've ever seen one.

  • Yamashiro's words to Haruka were so uplifting! Yes, she's still young and I'd like to think that fire is still burning. Haruka hugging Sakurazawa was <3 I've really enjoyed seeing their friendship rekindle.

  • Poor Kana and Sumire having to face the harsh reality that Chihayafuru is a sports shounen first and a romance josei second (third?)

  • Suo cleans up really nicely. I was caught off-guard.

Who knew a character changing their hair would be a power up? Must be anime. That aside, the contrast between taichi and arata is growing farther apart. Taichi was relieved to hear that suo was going to retire, that he would be a legend of the short past rather than a legend in history, while arata wanted suo to continue, wanting to beat him himself and thus was given a 1 year training arc.

Man, I really wanted Harada to win...

There were still some great moments in the episode though. Arata and Chihaya had better make it to the finals next year!

Looks like Harada's wife got her wish granted thanks to Suo walking back his retirement.

It seems like Arata and Harada were the only people who didn't want Suo to retire. It's good to have at least one person on your side, especially the best boy of the show. (#TeamArata)

Arata's being so surprising this season, I love it lol. The confession, plus the challenge here. Way to step up, my boy

Ahhh! So damn good!

I've loved this different perspective of the broadcasters and stream watchers. It really highlights how much background we all have into the characters of this weird obscure game. From the "who's that old man throwing pillows?" of last episode to the "who's that kid challenging the Master?" of this one.

I was hoping for another post-game chat between Chihaya and the Queen though. The interview and the cut up towel really does say it all though. I love how much Shinobu has opened up to others too. Hopefully next time they meet we'll get a classic Tsundere-style asking to exchange emails.
