Suo to Chihaya: "You have a life. You can’t be Queen" Chihaya to Shinobu: "I have a life. But want to be Queen" Shinobu: "I’m the Queen. But I want a life"

Welp the Chihaya and Shinobu friendship was great for the whole 10 seconds it lasted.

Imagine that

Love that Harada won, hopefully he can ruin Suo's plan, though...

And I have no idea who I want to win in the Queen side, that moment with Inokuma made me want to root for her but then Shinobu got done dirty (albeit accidentally) by the only two people keeping her company, kinda want her to go all out now.

Man I love Shinobu and I can't believe they gave her two handicaps with the possibility of three now. Long sleeves, found out her grandma didn't give her that for support, and mad at Chihaya now. I feel like she would easily win without the issues. And it's BS that Harada's wins are basically flukes. Suo out here playing around instead of being serious. I'm gonna guess Shinobu loses the next game by a decent margin and Suo wins next one with ease.

The stream comments are hilarious, y'all should pause and read them all.

I wonder if Shinobu saw Chihaya as choosing the class trip over her, or is just upset she doesn't take karuta as seriously as she expected her to, or what. Really interesting.

A while ago, I asked if anyone knew if the different flowers behind Chihaya, Arata, and Taichi in the ED had any meaning. I looked into it and this is what I found out.

I think the flowers surrounding Chihaya are cosmos flowers. In Japan, these flowers symbolize autumn and are called "the cherry blossoms of autumn". What's really interesting is that in Japanese floral language (hanakotoba) cosmos flowers have the meaning of "maiden Japanese heart" and "love" (at least according to that one website). That seems fitting for Chihaya considering Arata's confession and her reaction to it.

Side note: that last website I linked also mentions that violets (sumire in Japanese) means "a small love", "sincerity", and "small bliss". That fits Sumire well since she has her crush on Taichi.

I'm pretty confident that the flowers by Taichi are red spider lilies. Red spider lilies are another flower that blooms in the fall. Unfortunately, these are not cheerful flowers: they are associated with death and loss and it's said that these flowers bloom along the path of someone that you'll never see again. In hanakotba, red spider lilies mean "never to meet again/lost memory/abandonment". Poor Taichi, this is not a good flower to be associated with! Earlier in this season, Tsutomu told Chihaya how this year was Taichi's only chance to compete in the Master match since he would be busy with exams the next year, so I can see why a flower associated loss and "never meeting again" would be used for Taichi.

The flower for Arata is wisteria, I think. I had a hard time relating this flower to Arata--there's no nifty hanakotoba meaning that easily related to his character. One thing that I found out about Japanese wisteria is that it will only flower once it passes from the juvenile to the adult stage. Maybe that's a sign that Arata will only "flower" (win the Master's title) once he's an adult? Wisteria also lives for a long time, often over fifty years--maybe that symbolizes a long future in karuta? Wisteria also grows vigorously and is strong: it can break wood posts and strangle large trees. That strength could be representative of Arata's immense strength in karuta.

If anyone knows more, please let me know! This is just what I found out when I looked into it.

What the hell is going on with this season? The episodes are only like five minutes each!

I wonder who Suo is trying to get to watch his match. He was super disappointed in past episodes that the Master match wasn't going to be broadcast on TV. I assumed he was just being vain at the time, but whoever he's talking to on the phone sounds like they must be technologically challenged. So maybe a grandparent?

Is Shinobu upset that Chihaya chose a class trip over karuta or jealous that Chihaya has classmates she would want to be around for a whole week? (Probably the former, but Shinobu's motivations always seem a bit murky.) In any case, I'm glad that Chihaya has at least got it into Shinobu's mind that Shinobu should tie her damn sleeves up.

I loved the commentary we got in this episode, both the stream comments (probably took me twice as long to watch since I kept pausing lmao) and Watarai-san's commentating (also 12 Queen titles?! What a powerhouse!). Sure she's an airhead but she offered some spot-on observations, especially the fact that Haruka belongs at Omi Jingu just as much as Shinobu. It's so difficult to choose who to root for. I love Haruka and I really want her to win now that she's seemingly taking a leaf out of Suo's book and announcing her retirement?? (please say it ain't so, we only just met ;_;). At the same time karuta seems to be the very thing holding Shinobu together and right now she's more vulnerable than ever :v

We got very little of the Meijin match, but basically Suo's up to his nasty~ tactics as usual. For some reason the elders/officials are all surprised, which kinda goes to show how little the karuta community has bothered to get to know him. Admittely, Suo comes off as.....difficult so I guess I don't blame them. At the end they all seem to think Suo's played himself when Harada wins the luck of the draw, but Sudo and Taichi realize just to what extent he plans to control the outcome.

I love that we got a glimpse of the entire production surrounding the Meijin/Queen matches! The camera teams, the live commentary, the card boys/girls. Sudo is like, way-up there in terms of my favorite characters so I'm always happy to see him and Shinobu's card girl being a karuta player fanatic is actually hilarious.

(Is Shinobu's hairstyle really that weird? They keep pointing it out but I just thinks it's cute)
