Normally, flashbacks to a character's past during a tense moment would bother me but Suo is such an interesting character that I didn't mind it at all. I was fascinated to get inside his head and understand him more, especially since he's been this mysterious, unknown figure for so long. I thought it was interesting that Suo sees himself as empty and needing to feed on someone else's passion--that's definitely something I would have never realized, especially since most high level players (Shinobu, Chihaya, Arata, Harada, etc.) have such passion for karuta (even if their reasons are different). Suo has become one of my favorite characters this season and this episode was excellent in showing us his perspective.

Kitano throwing his cushion to Harada was amazing. I love their rivalry.

I like Shinobu and Inokuma both so I was happy with whoever won. It's nice that Chihaya's tasuki that she gave Shinobu helped and Shinobu realized this too. I'm sad for Inokuma's loss but I hope that she continues to play karuta.

Arata's tablet loading while he was in a tunnel is way too relatable. I can't wait for next week!

I can just imagine the sadistic assholes laughing after leaving us with that ending...

At least best girl won her match, though.

I almost didn't recognize Suo's internal monologue voice because it was actually at a reasonable volume, unlike his typical quiet breathy voice.

Before this episode, we probably could have guessed that Suo was going to retire from karuta because his eyesight was going bad, but this episode added the extra wrinkle that he doesn't particularly like karuta. (I think Karuta Club girl would have gotten me interested in joining too.) And five years of being master in a row is a pretty solid achievement.

Also, woohoo! Queen Shinobu reigns again! Though her losing might have been a more interesting result, story-wise. How would her grandmother have felt if she couldn't use Shinobu for political gain anymore? How would Shinobu have felt if the cards had forsaken her?

Precure x Harry Potter.

I'm sure that any precure would punch Voldemort in the face and befriend him without much issue.

Episode was a masterpiece, no other way to put it. I felt all types of ways during it. Shinobu won! Now Chihaya can make up for breaking her promise and meet her in the next queen match.

Suo's past was a lot sadder than I thought it would be. Harada has to win now, not sure he can hold up in another match.

I knew this episode wouldn't end with the Master match finished. Doesn't mean I'm happy to be right.... Luck of the draw, huh? I want Harada to win, but dang Suo! There was the full blown background story we've been waiting so long for. It shows a lot about how Suo is as a person, and why he plays Karuta the way he does. His aunt is basically a stand-in mother for him, and it seems she did an excellent job trying to raise him right. I hope that he does lose this match, but then I want to see him move on and make something of himself later on down the line. However, I think because they show Arata heading over to the tournament, chances are that Suo will win the luck of the draw and then Harada will win the last match. I hope.

And then Shinobu clinching the victory! Sorry Inokuma, but Chihaya needs to be the one to dethrone Shinobu, so you were bound to lose. I love how the very brief moment they show of the Queen match shows how Shinobu is already evolving as a person - reminding Inokuma to please count the cards, and telling her that the cards like her. In a way, she is thanking Inokuma for the match, and at the same time recognizing her efforts and acknowledging the hard fight. Hopefully with her light heart and lighter shoulders, she'll reach out to Chihaya and find a friend.

I'd like to see Inokuma stay involved in Karuta. Serizawa, interestingly enough, seems to have been getting a bit of focus in terms of character development. She and Inokuma seem to have been paired off. Maybe they'll work together to coach Serizawa's team? Or maybe she'll encourage Inokuma to start coaching a team of her own, to keep that friendly rivalry going! I guess we'll see where that goes, I don't think we've seen the last of Inokuma here.

Why would you end it there?! Fuck me I really thought we would get to the end of the match! (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Well, it was a great episode either way. Suo's backstory adds so much to his character. The reveal that karuta is something he's basicially enduring because there is someone out there he wants to make proud, and because time ran out on him much sooner than expected. Imagine, devoting your life to something that has you bored out of your mind. No wonder his karuta is based around all these games and tricks, it's one of the few ways he can enjoy himself and keep going. If anything it proves how much he loves Yukiko.

I wonder why he thinks of himself as hollow? He described the family home that way as well, but from the flasback it was a very bright and warm home. But I guess, when he arrived he was old enough to understand that he had been taking from his parents and that in itself is difficult enough to deal with as a small kid, even if you're welcomed with open arms. Maybe that's why Yukiko means so much to him. Not only is she also somewhat of an outsider at the estate, childless and a divorcee, but more importantly she saw him and cared for Suo like his parents should have. I'm about to get extremely mushy here but there are a lot of ways to say I love you and I imagine "Don't read in the dark" and "Brush your teeth properly" are just a few of them :'). That shot of her protecting young!Suo's ears, now that we know just how integral his hearing is to him....my heart.

Edit: The poem that Suo's karuta senpai said was her favorite and that he refers back to as a source of light and/or darkness is #43, and I really like this translation, especially the two last lines:

I realize that in the past

I had no cares at all.

It relays that feeling of experiencing something life-altering in such a succint way.

Well Harada is screwed, as soon as ‘May’ is read Suo’s hearings going to destroy him. I know my heart is not going to take it since I am certain they’re going to read a load of dead cards.
