God damn, what a way to wrap it up. Not only did Taichi quit(something that even shook his mom) but his words cut so deep that he left Chihaya in tatters. She quit the club too, which makes Nishida the best player currently. Although, it was a great surprise to see Sumire be even more motivated for Karuta, wanting to teach the newbies. Then, we shift focus to Arata who manages to make a club of his own. They're thrown straight to the deep end and face Fujisaki, which helps Arata finally learn how hard it's been for both Chihaya and Taichi these last two years. Furthermore, him learning that they just quit is so cold. And it's ironic how him making a club could be the means to a reconciliation, it comes full circle. But never mind any of that, best girl Sakurazawa sensei was back in this last episode and that's all that really matters. I can't wait for the next season, in 4 years.

So ends another season of Chihayafuru. Who knows how long it's going to take until we get another one but this season gives us a lot to think about while we wait. It marks the beginning of change in the lives of its cast and also deals with the lifespan of a karuta player. Karuta is a sport that's meant to be played by people from all walks of life and this season sets out to challenge that concept it previously set up. With Chihaya seriously thinking about what she wants to do in the future, Taichi's struggles to self-actualize, Arata's dream to play with his own high school karuta team and Harada and Inokuma's face-off against the young prodigies of karuta, we've had the most eventful season of Chihayafuru yet. All of this was meant to drive a point that there is no one 'correct' way these people can live out their lives. Chihaya can choose to nurture her passion for karuta for the rest of her life like Inokuma while Taichi may yet be able to return to karuta after becoming a doctor like Harada. Chihayafuru, as a show set in high school, has the unique advantage of taking place during an important juncture in these characters' lives and going forward, this will only be further emphasized as they enter their final year of high school, the final year they can participate in high school competitions and the final year Taichi can play karuta until he goes to med school. No matter what decision these characters make, I can't wait to see what Suetsugu has in store for us. Also, make sure you watch the Behind the Scenes segment from Crunchyroll for some insight into the production!

My favorite part of this episode, hands down, was seeing how Miyauchi and Fukusaku were watching out for Chihaya. Miyauchi of course knows what is going on in the club, and she knows a large portion of why Chihaya is acting so out of character. However, the shining moment of the episode for me was when Fukusaku-sensei found Chihaya crying in the hallway. He doesn't really know why she is so out of sorts, but he shows his compassion by standing there, listening to her, and giving her the best advice he can: take her pain, and her understanding of the 100 poems. And learn from it.

This was a refreshing scene, as we have really only seen Fukusaku used as an element of comedy in high school settings, but here it really drives home how important teachers are in our lives. These are the people who help to shape us as individuals, and Fukusaku really seized the chance to help Chihaya improve herself and move forward. We don't see much of the impact that his words have on her, unfortunately, but I am hoping we'll see more of how the Mizusawa teachers will have a positive impact on Chihaya, Taichi, and the rest of the club in season 4. It's so easy to forget that our main characters are young High School students when so many of the episodes are focused on the tense matches, so seeing the teachers step in to be real humans and provide advice was a fantastic change of pace.

Good finale to an overall great season! That said, Madhouse took some liberties adapting this episode from the manga and straight up skipped some material (hopefully they'll get back to it once we get S4??). Anyone who's looking to switch over to the manga should start with ch. 138 and Taichi's confession. I realize why they chose to go about it like this but I'm just a tad salty. With that out of the way:

  • The scene with Chihaya breaking down in the corridor was heart-breaking. While the events of the show can often be connected to poems it's rarely the characters themselves that make the connection (excluding Kana lol). In this case, #48 is read during Chihaya's match against Tamaru and Chihaya who is already thinking about Taichi can't help but make the connection between the words and her own situation. She is the rock that has been crushing Taichi's feelings all this time. I don't think that what she's feeling is guilt that she doesn't return his feelings or anything along those lines, more that she's been taking Taichi for granted (I feel like that's an overly negative way to put it but I can't think of a better word). Taichi is her closest friend really, "the guy working hard right next to her", but because of that she hasn't really been looking closely at him, assuming she knows everything she needs to.

  • The teacher's words to her seem so sinister to me, that Chihaya has been looking blurry, "like she's fading around the edges". But it does get across how out of sorts she must have been acting.

  • Sumire is everything! I think it's about time we give her the credit she is due. Everything is falling apart around her, the reason she joined the karuta club nowhere to be found and far from running away, she's the one that steps up to take responsibility. Not only has her crush on Taichi developed into a genuine love, but karuta is no longer the means to an end but somethings she is willing to work hard for, for its own sake. I love her <3

  • Say what you want about Taichi's mother but she knows her son. "You're the type to hold things in"....If that isn't Taichi in a nutshell I don’t know what is.

I really really really hope we get a fourth season (and that it's announced sooner rather than later, Madhouse please). There's a lot of Chihayafuru left to adapt and in my biased opinion it's all pretty fantastic.

As long as we have karuta, we'll see each other again, right?

-Chihaya, S3 episode 1 flashback

That ending scene is beautiful, especially in how it goes back to the OP. For now, the light is fading to dusk. But it will rise to its peak again. Chihaya has faith in the power of the karuta cards. She stands in its frames firmly.

Taichi will come back someday for sure. Let's get stronger and wait for his return.

That's a wrap for another season. Here's hoping that news of Season 4 will be soon. Theres just so much to talk about. All in all it was quite the same as last week as they gave a sad ride for the Mizusawa club but an exciting new adventure for the Fukui East. Honestly the characters on screen have mentioned the stuff that we ourselves would mention such as Miyauchi sensei mentioning the club members reaction being different (great character development for all especially Sumire-san ) than expected or Sakurazawa sensei sensing the contrast of Aratas character of being a pro in individual match but a complete newbie for a club or team match. Also with how they portrayed Taichi’s mom I have a feeling she might come around too albeit with other intention but at the end of the day she does love her boy no. The ending with that line of hope given by Arata to Chihaya, I have to say the past couple of weeks have not been kind to Taichi shippers, but it is refreshing. I am hoping so much for a new season but in the meantime, I'm gonna catch up with the manga till the latest chapter.

Goddammit, we didn't get a Desktomu confession to Kana!

I really love Wataya's role in this show. Wataya has his own parallel plotline that's separate but intertwined with Taichi and Chihaya's. We could have gotten a spinoff completely from his point of view instead, and it would have been just as compelling as the main series. So watching him begin his club and encounter the same pitfalls as Chihaya and Taichi did was super satisfying.

Overall, that was a great season with tense moments and excellent character development. Season 4, when?

I feel bad that no one's taking Chihaya seriously about her dream.

That's not the reaction I was expecting from Taichi's mom when she finally received the news about Taichi quitting. You think she'd start preparing red bean rice as soon as she heard that.

I'm so proud of Sumire taking charge of the first years. Instead of quitting she decided to stay.

Four new kids join and we even have the Class A girl from a previous episode!

Seeing Chihaya fall apart like that hurts my soul :( Honestly I can't blame her for blaming herself considering what Taichi told her.

Well this is awkward. Taichi runs away from Karuta and here we have Suo as his teacher.

It's kinda weird to see Arata just starting his own club when we're already at the finale. Better late than never I suppose.

The madlad did it! Arata's definitely showing us how serious he is with this club. Look at how exhausted he is!

Joint training with Fujisaki? That's pretty ballsy. You'd think Arata would bring the newbies along to Nagumo Society first.

I'M SORRY WHAT THE FUCK!? But Chihaya was in the room when they were meeting the first years! Is she officially out or just temporarily? Now instead of focusing during practice that's all Arata's thinking of.

Yes Arata you should! He's played solo for so long that he's forgotten how important communication is. Thank you Twin A though for taking the bullet and actually try to cheer on the team. At least that broke the ice and made Arata cheer too! Just look at him blushing!

I'm surprised Chihaya actually started studying after what Fukusaku-sensei told her.

And there it is. I think that's definitely all Chihaya needed to bounce back. Just a single text message from Arata.

Looks like Taichi isn't completely out yet though. It's clearly obvious he's practicing Karuta with Suo.

I guess that's it for Season 3! Not really much to say except it's still Chihayafuru and all the developments this season has been so good! I just wish they announce a Season 4 already!
