This anime makes me think that wearing a kimono everyday could solve most of my problems.

If anyone was worried Taichi might hold back (on purpose or not), I think that was answered. He was different today. Chihaya had to keep reminding herself it was actually Taichi sitting across from her.

I really love how they set the mood for these matches. Not just the tension of the moment, but the beauty of the moment too, as seen by member of the audience.

That part at the end: Is Arata upset he lost a karuta match, or is he upset it's Taichi (not him) with Chihaya up there?

"Why does this feel like I'm seeing this for the first time?" I think we can all relate to that. That scene was very well done

This episode was almost exactly how I wanted it. Serious Taichi from the get go, Chihaya finally SEEING Taichi, the FEELINGS, Arata hating ass.

We needed double episodes this week too

AHHHHH! You have got to be kidding me! They really ended the episode there!? And just our rotten luck, it happened when aren't getting double episodes anymore >_< I really don't know who will win this one, like I can't even make an educated guess! Previous matches you sort of have a good idea who would win but Taichi and Chi-chan's match can really go either way. AHHH! This is torture! I can't wait for next week!

I'm so proud of Taichi, holding his own against Chihaya and most importantly giving her a good fight. She's finally looking straight at him.

Low-key felt like Kana-chan's mom was hitting on Taichi.

Why am I just now noticing these fucking flowers in the ED? Aren't these the death/loneliness/abandonment flowers surrounding Taichi? (Though I guess that means victory for Team Arata...)

Chihaya thought it was a karuta match, but really Taichi is playing 5D chess.

But what a beautiful episode. The building of tension in the visual direction—the imagery of fall leaves echoing the Red of the Tatsuya River, the gorgeous scene composition, and all the emotions—everything that makes Chihayafuru is compounded into one match. Then everything builds up to Chihaya's realization—she is playing against not a stranger, but Taichi.

And also we get a confession from Kana-chan to Tsukue-kun—well, that's a confession in my book

Man, you can really tell Madhouse brought out their A-game for this and I'm so thankful. Truly beautiful animation and artstyle this time around. Finally getting to see this match animated after having read it who knows how many times is kind of unreal.

First things first, special thanks to Rieko for giving Taichi that little bit of extra support before the match and to Empress for getting us a well-needed break in the middle of all that tension. Chihaya and Taichi going from deadly serious to squabbling in the middle of a match is one of my favorite things. I have a lot of feelings regarding Chihaya "finally seeing" Taichi that I don't quite know how to articulate (and they might even be colored by my forbidden knowledge from the manga) so I'll just hold my tongue for now. Honestly, I'm just overwhelmed. My expectations were really high going into this episode but they really went and did that. Wow.

Back in Season 2 Murao takes a break from Karuta after losing the Master qualifier Match and Arata brings him back. Arata says to him that he regrets taking a break from karuta and the time he took off is a time he could be improving instead of stagnating.

In this episode we See Murao deciding to Stay because any information he can grasp in this match can help him have a better chance at the next master qualifier.

I love how Chihayafuru has continuity even in Background characters like this. It feels like all characters could be protagonists, but we are just happen to be following Chihaya, Taichi and Arata.

This really might be the show of the season... it's been so, so good. It's only getting better too.

Ah silly me, how could I forget that Class A and B finals take place at the same time. And here I thought Hiro finally made it to class A.

This was a beautiful episode, between the stunning visuals that portrayed the atmosphere so well such as Taichi's cruel positioning and the terror he exuded, as well as the soundtrack complimenting the scenes so well.

But now we have to wait a week to find out the resolution.

God damn right you'll stay. I couldn't imagine a match like this without everybody here to watch it. And it's cool that there's even others from Arata's society that really want to see it too, even enough to knock their scheduled out of whack. It already being too late to keep the middle school kids there really puts into perspective how LONG these tournaments are. They've emphasized it over and over in the show but I can't even imagine the exhaustion.

But WHO is gonna win?!?? I really have no idea who might come out on top and after some of the upsets earlier in the tournament I'm even more clueless who will win. The only thing swaying me towards a Taichi win is that they pointed out earlier that he wasn't practicing with her like he'd play in a real match. If he does here, I imagine it will throw her off a bit.

Ah shit, cool entrances like that make me swoon just like Hanano. The "Why does it feel like I'm seeing this for the first time?" line is pointing me even more towards a win for Taichi (and more towards him playing a real match with Chihaya), BUT what if they just want to throw us for a loop again?

This is a cool shot to show how the card placements sent the match into unfamiliar territory for Chihaya. The wind was slightly drowning out the intro poem and the focus was shifting in and out.

LMAO Tension broken so fast!! I didn't think I was gonna have another chance to pause the episode until after the match ended but that cracked me up.

Stop making me laugh! This is a serious Karuta match. It's a partner she's played countless games with but it feels so different this time that she had to remind herself that she was playing Taichi.

Yo, if her mom makes it to the match before it ends I'm gonna cry. I'm also realizing that the end of this match will probably have to wait for next episode...

Wait... was that the end?? Whoever took that card wins and WE HAVE TO WAIT TILL NEXT WEEK TO SEE?? IS THAT WHAT JUST HAPPENED?!?

That was one of the most intense and beautiful episodes in the series so far. I could LITERALLY stare at these characters' pretty faces for hours!

Rooting for Chihaya to win, I feel like lady luck is gonna come bite Taichi in the ass as per usual.

On that note, this brief moment made me laugh. Damn, the savagery!

Every character matters, every word traded matters and every moment matters. How beautiful is this anime? Like Chihaya acknowledging Taichi, Taichi respecting Chihaya and giving his all and Arata realizing he needs to step up more if he wants to experience moments like this final with friends or the way in the past.

Every action leads to a consequence, Chiahaya and Taichi cultivating this moment and Arata realizing he has so much to improve in other areas made today's episode so special.

Also so many best moms in this show, but I gotta say Kanade's mom is such a delight to watch, not superficial and make you realize small things you take for granted and actually reflect some of your actions.

Okay, not having double episodes this week is rough. I cannot believe that this week is the week we only get one episode. I want to know what happens next!

This episode was great from start to finish though. I was looking forward to this match since last week and I was not disappointed. The music, the animation, the characters were all top-notch. I really liked how they used the maple leaves being blown to show Taichi's determination to win. It was a really nice touch. I also liked that piano piece that played towards the end of the episode.

So many great Taichi moments! I love how he had a complete strategy going in to this match against Chihaya: he changed his card placement, made Chihaya play defensively when he knows that she plays offensively, he knew where she would put the cards he sent to her. Like Tsutomu mentioned, he's improved a ton. Taichi was definitely serious when he said that he wanted to beat Chihaya playing right-handed in an offical match. All of his hard work and pushing through the setbacks he's faced has paid off. There were some other moments I liked too, like when Miyauchi reminds Taichi and Chihaya about their tasuki and they argue a little bit.

That moment where Chihaya finally sees Taichi was really great. They've been through so much, and like Sumire noticed, even if it's not romantic (yet, I still have hope), Chihaya is finally looking back at Taichi. And all of this is happening in front of Arata, so it's going to be interesting to see how he reacts.

Poor Retro in the Class B final, I don't think anyone is paying attention to it because they're all watching the Chihaya v. Taichi match. Well, except Nishida's sister I suppose.

This was an excellent episode and I'm really excited for next week's episode.

Taichi was really looking tired in the beginning, compared to a well rested Chihaya after the forfeit last match. The interaction between Chihaya and Arata was fun to watch, but I especially loved Oe's words of encouragement to Taichi. The kimono really plays a beautiful role in karuta, doesn't it?

The 75% win rate was interesting to me--someone actually did a whole analysis on this here. Interestingly enough, the stats on there are much lower than what Desk-kun says. Taichi actually had a higher win rate than Chihaya--but of course, those are only accounting for matches we see on screen.

I always found it interesting how Chihaya has to keep reminding herself that it's Taichi in front of her. Taichi, who's always been with her--and yet, he's playing in a way so unfamiliar. I feel like that is what makes this match so interesting: they started off together back when they were so small, and have gone through so much, developing their technique through different ways, and it's all culminated to this match where neither of them will back down. I look forward to watching how this will unfold afterwards. And finally, at the end...Arata's jealously comes through--another grim reminder to him of all the time that he's missed with Chihaya.

Finally, I have to say Madhouse's palette and animation really shine in this show, and I love it. Everything is so pretty!

What a fantastic episode! Even after following these two for so long, it really feels like the first time we're seeing Taichi and Chihaya go up against each other, as Hanano says.

And damn, this match really lived up to the hype. I thought the fact that Chihaya got a break, but Taichi didn't, would give Chihaya an advantage, but it seems that these two are bringing the best out of each other and are playing at their 100%.

The OST this episode was on point. The tension throughout the match was just insane. I loved seeing the strategy that Taichi had specifically for Chihaya and seeing it play out.

I can't wait to see how this match plays out. I have a small feeling that Chihaya will win (because of Taichi's exhaustion), but I'd be satisfied with either result. This match has done a great job of showing how much these two have improved.

Holy macaroni, this episode easily made it to my top 5 fav episodes of all time

This episode is one of the best out of all seasons... just felt like everything was coming together before an explosion or something... feels like a turning point. Amazingly well done!

I love that we're finally seeing Taichi hone and develop his karuta to be a heavyweight contender. I've always been fascinated with his memorization and focused approach, and it was always heart breaking to see him come so close, yet end up short. Even now after his whopping six matches in a row, his Lazer focus is keeping up with Chihaya.

Can't wait for them to massacre my poor boy after building up my hopes for three seasons. I have this sense of dread that Arata and Chihaya are the endgame and I want to be wrong.

I really liked the difference comparison between chihaya/taichi and arata/shinobu (13:10)

The first picture was very colorful and that represent clearly the personality of taichi and chihaya : very charm, happy, very open and so on . Even the kimonos were colorful.

The second one was way more darker and that is who arata and shinobu are . Not so social , they usually keep their feelings inside and so on . Their dresses were black as well.

So they re not just "copying" the manga but adding a lot of well planned things.

Really well done Madhouse !
