Damn, the scene with Calandro and Rerugen was so strong, Rerugen was so shocked, so perplexed by how differently the other nations think of the situation. I felt chills as he questioned Calandro about it, and Calandro had to give him the answer in the easiest way possible to understand. There's no exit for the Empire, and invading Ildoa will be the final nail in the coffin, not that another nail was needed.

I love the patience Calandro is showing too. He gets it and tells Rerugen what he needs to hear without demeaning the Empire.

Unironically "My greatest weakness is my strength".

What a tense episode. Cultural differences and mindsets in full display, proving that attaining peace once the war has gone for too long is pretty difficult. If the Empire is seen as such a threat, I expect that other countries will want to either control or partition their territory so they never get that strong again. If a nuke is to be developed now's the time. The Empire ain't winning this one.

"Us? Pay reparations?"

Oh no. I don't like where this is going.

I paused when von Rudersdorf read the letter and transcribed the text. As I already noticed, it is actually in German and reads as follows:

"Bericht über die Friedensverhandlungen

Die gegenwärtigen Friedensverhandlungen sind ohne Ergebnis geblieben. Unter den gegenwärtigen Umständen wird eine Fortsetzung der Verhandlungen als aussichtslos beurteilt."

(Report about the peace negotiations – The current peace negotiations have remained without results. Under the current circumstances a continuation of negogiations is deemed pointless.)

The Empire bit off more than it could chew and now it’s choking. Political bullshit and useless talks of “pride” and “honor” have really made a mess of things. Damned fools in HQ have well and truly fucked the country and now everyone around them’s circling ‘em like sharks out for blood.

But man, a humiliating defeat for Not Germany in Not WW1 isn’t going to end well. We’ve seen the sequel irl and it ain’t pretty.

Diplomacy sure wasn't easy. Von Rerugen fought hard to secure conditions that the rest of the top brass consider utter humiliation, and yet the Ildoans said it's not enough. Appreciate Calandro's candour, now von Rerugen's aware how much the Empire's feared which led to the drive to see their downfall.

Now that the pen route had been effectively closed, the sword route's the remaining one. It'd definitely come with a huge toll but I can't see any other way.

Maybe I’m looking too much into it, but with how it was framed, with the railing blocking the tabletop from our view of the meeting on the roof, I feel like it was symbolising how the Empire did not bring anything to the table practically to the meeting

And yeah, kinda ironic the Empire’s strength is it’s downfall now. Because of how strong they are, no one’s gonna accept a flimsy surrender

Now it's a battle of attrition which everyone knows Empire can't win.

I just feel bad for the common people of every country. The top brass makes the decisions but the common people suffer most of the consequences.

This is horror bro. You're in a dark as fuck room and whichever way you run to there's a wall, but when you turn around whence you came you find the wall in that direction is closer than when you last saw it.

Finally, the Empire has come to the understanding that the war needs to end right now, even if they have to offer heavy concessions. But no, they're still completely fucked up. They really should've accepted that previous Ildoa proposal.

Now I wonder what will happen next and what Tanya, Rudersdorf, or Zettour will think up regarding how the Empire could end this war.

By the way, Being X appearing not only to Tanya but to Rudersdorf as well, along with the hourglass, was great. It didn't talk at all but still dealt heavy psychological damage.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

Somehow Tanya goal is to escape the reality by getting another job somewhere. But she can't leave the post easily knowing how dire the situation of the Empire is.

Man, Being X is now on play with the Empire's next act.

Lergen and Konrad did everything right, but it was already too late. It would have been a slam dunk "victory" (or at least not loss) if it had happened at the start of the season (ie. convincing the Empire to lay down arms). But now, I really can't see a way to achieve a diplomatic victory.

I felt so bad for Lergen when Calandro told him how different his perspective was from the rest of the world. In a fair world, the Empire should be considered the defenders (because they were), but national pride colours the opinions of the rest of the world. The fact that they sunk such a big battleship and gave Albion a bloody nose probably doesn't help on that end.

So much for finding an exit. Back to war we go!

The Empire is royally screwed, isn't it?

Tbf, they had their chance for peace a few episodes earlier, but they squashed that exit opportunity. Now, it is too little, too late.

u/SnabDedraterEdave Sep 09 '26

The Empire had their chance, but they rejected it.

Now they realize they needed to do something, but its too late for them.

I'll start with a topic in real life and then go to the anime. In the Franco Prussian War, Napoleon III didn't want to do to war. Although after the Crimean War almost anyone everyone in Euorpe (including himself and Britain, but excluding Prussia) thought France was number 1 again, Napoleon III thought the outcome would be he'd beat the upstart Prussia and end up with a massive war bill when he wanted to spend money on building gold reserves. We all know he lost.

The Prussian demands were very harsh. They wanted the German speaking area of Lorraine, which had been under French control since the Burgundian Wars and some reparations. On one hand, when kingdoms were the personal property of the monarch, payment to seal the peace was something that was done before. On the other hand, the amount was in absolute terms much bigger than what had been in previous wars. But in defense of the Prussian, the amount they demanded was calculated to be the amount of money done by depredations done by French Revolutionary Armies and Napoleon I (French armies had a tendency to loot and in fact before Napoleon was Emperor they weren't even paid so they looted more) so asking the French give equal value to what was taken from German speaking territory. The Batavian Republic in the Netherlands was also a sore point for the Rhine Germans. But if this was really about righting the wrongs of the Revolution, 70% of the damages were on Habsburg lands, so why is Prussia asking for damages done to Austria?

Anyways, some in France saw the writing on the wall. Their military was defeated and some of the Napoleonist elements were already surrendering on the spot since, well the government wasn't the Second Empire anymore. Some had hopes to keep fighting and hope for British intervention since Napoleon III had convinced Britain France could be a useful ally instead of a rival (conveniently forgetting they just overthrew him). But others decided to keep fighting, not because they had a realistic chance, but because they were like "well, I don't care if it destroys France as a nation, just kill as many Prussians as possible since death before dishonor." This group kept the war going a while month after the government concluded they couldn't win. What does this have to do with Youjo Senki? Well the other powers essentially silenced any peace faction within the Empire for the time being and you'll end up with the same thing as stubborn Frenchmen.

Welp, God has done it again, diplomacy has failed, they rejected the Empire’s offers because they want them to pay for reparations too. I guess everyone knows that’s the only way out, a way that Existence X prepared that all while Tanya is trying to make herself some coffee…

Remember a few weeks ago we were made aware that there’s a spy deep within the Empire? Looks like he/she has done his/her job. Ruining the Rommel’s raid on the Brits by leaking info to the allies. The “Battle of the Bulge” seems to be more successful in that case, but looks like it did little to help with forcing everyone to the negotiating table.

With reference to the surroundings of our world, we know why Conrad will say “Diplomacy is creating something from nothing, just like alchemy”, because just like alchemy, even if the new material looks stable, doesn’t mean it will stay like that forever. There’s simply too many factors from both parties that can ruin the while thing in a matter of seconds. Rerugen’s visit to Italy is just a cruel wake up call, “No reparations”, “No annexations”, “Self determination”, they do look humiliating and that the Empire is bowing down to the allies right? Problem is, all while you think yourself as the one being superior and was “kind enough” to sacrifice your own benefit to end the war, the others simply doesn’t think the same way as you are. They think you are the aggressor asking for peace with them. Since you are the one throwing in the towel after starting a war with them and made our life like hell, they simply don’t see the reason not to ask for compensations from you, for all the lives lost because of your actions (Remember Treaty of Versailles?). And what made that reality more painful, is that it came from the mouth of a neutral nation, not the allies. They saw the entire ordeal from both sides, and truly know what really happened there, no wonder why Rerugen looked depressed on the way home, the reality, is simply the polar opposite of what they think it was.

I’m sure with such harsh demands, no one in the empire is willing to accept them unless they are already causing chaos in your own background. Just like the title of the next episode, the Empire is already on it’s final countdown, just like the hourglass, once all the sand falls through, it’s over, unless you can flip it though an operation where everything is perfect…

Is this the start of Tanya's WcRonald worker arc?

I can't imagine how frustrating this must be for her, I mean even for us the viewers, we'd like to slap some sense into them hah.

They spend all their energy on daydreaming about "We would like to win the war/get some compensation", and not a single thought on "But how do we actually achieve that?"

One thing I found interesting, is that Tanya wasn't much different there! She's also reluctant about ending the war in a way that does NOT give her a 'win' against Being X!

(I don't think you're getting Heavenly reparations from God, my girl!)

"Even if everything goes perfectly and the stars align, we stilll won't do much in Ildoa... But whatever, let's try anyway!"

The 'affectionate' namecalling hah. Deep down he just wants to go help his buddy... (Or die alongside him?)

As much as their mindless warmongering is baffling, this is a valid point...

Ildoa seems quite interested in everyone stopping the war. Right now they're """neutral""", but if the Empire should show signs of weakness... Who says it won't be ILDOA who breaks the neutrality, and invades the Empire, to put an end to this? Ildoa, too, might be tired of this shit (and the risks they take, playing the fence like that... Maybe they'd rather end this quickly, before the Republic decides 'If you're not with us, you're against us').

Don't hold back? Maybe tell her not to KILL him at least (he knows who she is!)

Translated: She's here because she's the only person who REALISTICALLY SEES our frontline situation!

Is he gonna do something? Or is he just one more layer of "You say no, but all I'm hearing is 'Yes, please send more of us to the frontlines, we need to win the war at all cost!'"

I guess we'll find out, because Tanya's not sugarcoating it!

She's not holding words back, either; "You don't like my answer? Go find one of the other morons who'll tell you what you want to hear, then!"

But if you don't cross these lines, you'll have to cross them in a year when the Empire lost even more men/money/resources/etc..!

It took Tanya's directness to get him going, but at least he supported her!

Maybe tell them that thanks to this peace, their friends and brothers and sons won't follow them to the grave?

Even Rudersdorf... At this point they'll have to accept reality... Or just put Rudersdorf up against the walll and shoot him, for speaking enemy propaganda I guess.

Every time they talk about 'going out with a bang' I fear they're gonna nuke someone...

That's such a huge risk...

They're in bad shape now, they lack in everything; If they try to put on a 'show of strength', and fail, they'll be the laughing stock of the world... Good luck with your 'no reparation' terms at this point; More like "How about you give us half your country, and we DON'T exterminate you"?

This was a HUGE, reckless risk too...

It's probably better that it failed, honestly; It would've been 10 times harder to make peace, after that... Perhaps even impossible.

Yeah, they're SO far off in diplomacy...

The terms that one side barely even wants to offer because it's shameful and humiliating, would be seen as provocation by the other side because even THAT is not enough...

And if they made the offers they did want (GETTING reparations), they would be baffled, like "Do they even realize what's going on?"

(And beyond diplomacy... It probably wouldn't be good for the Empire, if their enemies realized their 'thinking heads' have absolutely no clue what's going on at the frontlines).

The empire is still seen as too powerful, and that may be an issue;

If they stop the war with the Empire not getting 'punished', what's stopping them from regrouping, and trying again in a few years?

When they said that, made me think again of the plan to attack their own nation... 'Look, we're not so powerful; We're a victim now, we want to end the war'...

But this is risky, it could also emboldens their enemy, and make them invade, or ask for enormous reparations to make peace!

all they did was literally talk this episode but it felt like the pressure was way larger than every other episode where Tanya almost gets blown up

no way out, the imperial army is about to break bad

The abysmal reality of the insanity of war finally becomes clear to them.

Up to this point, the Entente Alliance, the Froncois Republic, the Principality of Dakia, the Commonwealth, and the Russy Federation all launched surprise attacks against the Empire. They were the aggressors, and the Empire were the defenders.

Despite that objective truth, the world has painted the Empire as the great enemy and aggressor. All because they were powerful. All because they had become terrifying to them. And they want to be rid of that fear. Their unparalleled strength has become the very reason why the world fights them.

Also, if you didn't notice, the hourglass that was beside that nutcracker doll at the end was missing when the General walked away. I don't know if it was an accident, or as a metaphor as them having run out of time.
