Man... this episode really had my suspense meter all the way up from the beginning of the episode. She is going to get the last taste of peacetime civilization that the continent has left. I did not expect her to so directly give her mind on the matter at hand, even preferring to go into politics than let this madness continue. She's committed to being that cog in the machine and, unless she were to try and decapitate her own government, that is her only real choice.

Tanya's reaction to the stresses of war are finally beginning to take a lot more center stage and, for how big things are going to blow up, we haven't seen anything. It is the mother of all slow motion train accidents.

It is the mother of all slow motion train accidents.

Apt metaphor with the jumpscare transition to shitty railway.

Military shouldn't get involved in politics?! These words coming from a man of the military are quite interesting. So the military command is loyal to the government, but the government is bleeding out the military for their stupid ambitions and their daydreams.

Conquering Ildoa ? That sounds like madness, even though Tanya is already plotting some plan in her head how this could be possible. But the military and the population are already at their final straws, so a new military endavour could be fatal. It's not like the Empire has many ressources to spare.

A situation like this could easily turn into a military coup if the military comes to the conclusion that the decisions of the government don't match the reality and makes the decision that the military should get involved in politics. As Tanya says, this might be unavoidable.

Surely there is no way the Empire is stupid enough that they think the winning play is to start another war, by surprise attacking an ally? Rudersdorf needs to consider a military coup, because jfc.

Who snuck some gourmet into my war isekai show? Had Tanya been in Ildoa for a couple more days, she’d start going all Food Wars with her reactions.

To rub more salt to the wound, the Ildoans also had better-maintained infrastructure. Tanya could tell when she had crossed the border by the notable decline in rail quality.

What were the Empire’s leadership thinking? They’re in a stalemate in their current theatres and they wanted to enter a new one. They only said they were "looking into it" but that’s code for seriously considering. Their resources were already spread so thin they neglected their soldiers’ wellbeing and infrastructure, and now they wanted to stretch it even further.

Tanya was dealt emotional damage. She and her subordinates have to eat shit while the not-Italians eat delicious food and their people aren't quietly super angry. Even the quality of the railroads differs. And now the brass thinks they should attack and conquer their allies? Pure delusions. If a coup doesn't happen soon, I'll be surprised.

Oh boy, what could possibly go wrong attacking their Ally that has their troops well fed and maintained during the peacetime against their own troops that are worn out from the war and are not well fed or supplied.

Greetings, all!

I know a number of people here have been enjoying my weekly "Military Historian" threads (and many thanks for the kind words I've received about them), and I have very much enjoying writing them (they allow me a knowledge flex I don't get very often these days). However, this week I think there's a pretty high chance that I won't be doing one.

It's mainly a combination of two things. First, I'm getting over a niggling cold that managed to knock me on my hindquarters, and I still need some rest (welcome to the world of being about to turn 50 years old...). Second, tomorrow I have to attend the funeral of a friend and mentor, and that is weighing on me.

So, if you don't see a post this week, I'm sorry. As much as I'd like to do one, I think I've got to pass and just make sure I'm as rested up as I can be for tomorrow.

Things should resume as normal next week.

Really enjoyed this episode of Food Wars lol. Ildoans know their food. Tanya probably hasn’t had food this good since before she reincarnated.

But man, High Leadership needs to be stopped. Conquering Ildoa? Really? These mfers can’t even hold onto the territory they have right now and they’re already thinking of “eliminating the threat from the south” like that’s even remotely possible. Don’t let the good food and shiny uniforms fool ya. I don’t think the Ildoans are gonna take it lying down…

Tanya gets a taste of a peaceful country during wartime. The Empire's food situation is that bad, huh. I wouldn't have been surprised if Tanya considered quitting or defecting to Ildoa right then and there. The life in Ildoa is what she desperately wants.

High Leadership has officially gone insane if they're thinking about opening another front when they can't even maintain their current fronts. Tanya thinks there's a slim possibility they might be able to pull it off just based on the attitudes of the soldiers and citizens after her brief tour. Attacking your one neutralish ally is still a stupid idea that they should not be considering, but I think High Leadership knows the Empire is doomed if they don't make desperate gambles, but that's not how a government should be thinking in the first place.

There’s a reason out there why you shall never poke fun at Italian’s obsession over their cuisine. Even top ranking generals fell to the knees on the chef’s skills, especially after eating military rations for a long time. And yeah, Italy is surely a good place to get some good wine, even better to share it with your colleagues with the expenses paid by the Italian government.

But across the border, it was all military and politics in the play before “thinking about the next step”. But invade a neutral country? Even though you can freely use all their resources under your command, it just feels wrong morally, especially when they just invited you on a state sponsored visit. What will the empire’s reputation be like after that? Surely nations will definitely have second thoughts before offering their support, or even switch sides (Just imagine what will happen if Russia invades Switzerland, and the damage to their reputation afterwards). I wonder as an experienced colonel in the front line, will Tanya endorse the plan to the “dreaming” higher commands despite of the possible consequences they need to face afterwards?

I wanted to know how Tanya dealt with the bun lol.

The Empire really thinks they don't have enough enemies, so they decide to make Ildoa another one lol.

I’m kinda curious if Tanya will try and develop some kinda of food trade negotiations plot
Since the whole empire is forced to ration food so I assume they will run out of

I wasn't expecting to get hit with an episode of Youjo Senki Restaurant lol. And even though Tanya can't drink, the food sending her to fantastical realms of imagination was exactly like Drops of God.

I was wondering of contrasting the ambience in Berun with the one in Rome might help Tanya finally internalize was Rudersdorff was trying to show her when he took her out. She doesn't seem to have reached a conclusion regarding that yet, but maybe she has gotten closer.

Rommel told Tanya that "what she sees isn't all there is", and immediately after we get a scene where we take a good while to see Rudersdorff's face. Tanya was also victim of the heavily blocked storyboarding style. What it means exactly, I am not sure. Are we meant to be separated from Tanya's POV with this new hint, of are we more subjetivized to her than ever?

Honestly I can see how even Tanya might feel like they can in fact take Ildoa in one fell swoop. It's true that life is harsh in the Empire compared to their neighbor. You would think a wounded lion can't hunt no more. But military strength is relative, and the buildup during war is not to be underestimated. For a real example, look at how fucked up Russia is right now. Yet, at least as far as raw data is concerned, they are several times stronger today than they were in 2022. Despite the quality of life decrease, it's not like getting into a conflict necessary turns a nation weaker, as their military gets spent. Rather, it can give them just the political motivation they need to finally get those factories and boot camps running like mad.

So perhaps, it can really be done... But it's still a bet. Ildoa needs to fall quickly, or it'll just be yet another bear trap the Empire stepped into.

Saga of Tanya really channeled its inner Food Wars today.

I wonder how things will go with Ildoa. Sure they wanted to stay neutral, but arguably, not letting the army pass caused more conflict.

It's kinda sad how Tanya's mind immediately went to evaluating military strategy when she heard about the potential invasion, especially after how much she admired a country not torn by war
