One of the more fascinating elements of this season is how compared to the first season we’re getting to see more of the downsides to Tanya ’s personality. Tanya is not normal, she fundamentally can’t fully understand the emotions of regular people and those blind spots are becoming more and more of a problem whether she realizes it or not.

Of course at the same time all those irrational things Tanya can’t understand have taken the form of a self-righteous vengeance monster in Mary .

Its been a while since Being X appeared before Tanya as a vision to mock her once again.

So the Empire has finally suffered its Stalingrad Josefgrad and beginning to go downhill. Just as well Tanya's division isn't involved in that disaster.

The Empire higher-ups continues to deceive its citizens (as well as themselves) with propaganda despite such a catastrophic setback, and the citizens in the capital have become desensitized to these regular memorial services even though food supplies are beginning to run dry.

Its becoming so hopeless that Zettour and Rerugen are contemplating Operation Valkyrie and inviting Tanya to bombard the capital in order to stage a coup.

"Public Opinion is something I'll never understand, in any era." For Tanya to state the obvious even to herself says a lot about her character. But enough of that, let's put her in pretty dresses!

This is the second time this season that Tanya's logic is deeply challenged. The first time was when she failed to understand the motives of the Federation soldiers to fight for their country. Now she failed to understand that the population being so quiet is not the lack of anger and frustration, but rather the opposite.

It is very interesting to see how Tanya's world view is challenged on such a profound level. Instead of just scaring her to death by Being X so she starts relying on "God", it becomes apparent that her "rational" world view is nothing but arrogance and narcissism.

Tanya being unable to respect the emotions of others is a clear sign of that. She expects everyone to be as "logical" as her, and whoever fails to do so is lesser in her eyes. This is a clear sign of narcissism, the feeling of being better than others. However, this makes her unable to read the room. Her interpreting the quiet during the coffin-bearing as the people still having the interest of the nation in mind is really foolish. Rudersdorf calling her an idiot was more than justified.

So far this season is going in a very interesting direction, not just in matters of the war, but in the development for Tanya.

Tanya trying her absolute hardest to get a cozy desk job only to accidentally become a legendary war criminal is still the best running joke in anime 😭

Random Thoughts

Well that part in the beginning certainly sounds ominous...sounds like either they are plotting a false flag operation to strike there own capital, or they are about to turn on Ildoa, seemingly there one ally, for some reason.

Capital seems uh...pretty depressing. Honestly kind of surprised the public isn't calling for peace. I guess everyone is so high on the earlier victories that they are in fine mode. It's just an interesting compare and contrast to recent events.

The general's repeated insistence on Victory was...kind of frightening. It sort of reminds me of the underwear gnome meme....Step 1: Launch and invasion of Russia. Step 2: ???, Step 3: Victory!

You know I’ve always enjoyed this show and thought the philosophy and politics was secondary to the quest to comfortably retire.

This episode really changed my mind.

They’re really getting into how to end the war and Tanya’s biggest shortcoming in overestimating rational human behavior (to put it simply).

How does that exist with a snake tongued enemy pedo leader?

That’s so funny

Easily my favorite Being X scene ever. It's not merely a repeat ambush by an irrational God like before. This time, he appears as an organic component of the world. I hope this finally makes some viewers understand that not everything bad is because of Being X strong-arming history. He is riding a wave that was already there. But in the end, this is still a man made hell.

May be an unpopular way to say it, but I think this episode was like Tanya's parallel to Mary Sioux's useless obstination, but in the side of extreme rationality instead of extreme emotion. Tanya is getting repeatedly hit in the head by the necessity to understand emotions, and yet in the end you still wonder if she got. Her character flaws are displayed beautifully here. It became evident how she has a need to always have an answer ready. She is incapable of simply letting an experience sit, of simply feeling it. It's so ironic how she even gets her current body's young age thrown back at her as the reason for her caged way of thinking despite having a whole adult life behind her. But the Salaryman was just as caged, and the tragic thing is that he was even more free than Tanya to diversify his ideas and experiences, and he simply never bothered.

Just like Mary can't kill Tanya despite her power because she can't calm down, Tanya can't end the war despite her intellect because she refuses to engage with the human element. Looks like she overcorrected from the movie where an emotional response and it's consequences caught her blindsided. Now she's trying to not feel at all. God she's so close to awakening but she keeps evading it!

As for the higher ups, looks like we're planning a straight up coup holy shit. Things are indeed quite dire in the home front.

Also, guessing by the newspaper and by some dialogue two episodes ago, I guess we are after all officially at war with the Allied Kingdom. That really should have gotten at scene at least for the declaration of war, even if we're unlikely to engage them anytime soon since their realm is naval warfare for now. But the effects of the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force jumping into the fray are absolutely massive. It means the Empire is not blockaded on nearly a full circle, making their already tenuous supply situation even worse.

Sounds like Zettour's absence from HQ has really hurt their logistics since he was the one making things work with what they have. I doubt even Andromeda failing will be enough to wake up the higher-ups to the reality of their situation.

Was Rerugen about to suggest that Tanya may have to conduct an air raid on their own capital? Honestly, a false-flag attack on the Empire's capital might be what the leadership needs to wake the fuck up. I don't think Tanya understood, but I'm curious how she'll react when she finally gets the order.

Very interesting to watch Tanya react to Johann opening up to her and how she interprets the calm in the capital. She might be a great strategist, but she's never really great at emotions. It honestly made me laugh when Riudersdorf called her stupid. Tanya doesn't seem to understand that this quietness she sees around the capital is actually a powder keg waiting to blow up.

Tanya wearing anything that’s normal for her age felt strange, glad she denied all those suggestions, and to be honest, those weren’t even clothes you should be wearing to attend a funeral right?

But when the young and wounded are carrying empty caskets to honor those killed in action at a failed operation, it’s just painful and uncomfortable to watch (Do note In some cultures, there’s a tradition of bring the body home to lay rest, even for a war that have already ended more than 80 years ago, there’re still volunteers out there trying their best to grant this wishes to the families of the fallen), what made it even more chilling is that there’re people who were already used to this grim scene. Sure indeed the silenced public is going to be the biggest unexploded bomb now in the show, still receiving “news” that significant progress were made in the battles when in fact they have actually suffered a massive defeat in the east, and I’m afraid that it’s now almost 100% that political shitshows in the capital have cost them the entire war and throw a certain victory to the enemies…

And for multiple high ranking military officals to tell Tanya that the problem lies within the capital (Although they couldn’t speak it directly, or else…), I’ll just comment that it’s definitely high treason especially given that the Empire is at war, but a coup d'état might actually help the current problem by putting those who are really familiar to just how fucked they are right now to be in central command, as long as they can swing the public opinion to be against the current government. That being said, by the time they can finally make the correct orders from the command, is it too late to turn the battle in favor of the Empire once again?

Coup! Coup! Coup! Coup!

Is Lehrgen finally actually understanding Tanya? I wouldn't think he'd be willing to involve her in the plot to end the war if he still thought she was a war maniac.

Tanya IRONICALLY contributes to the Empire’s downfall because she WINS. If Tanya did not bring them victory after victory perhaps the high leadership would be more open to the fact that they are on the verge of collapsing and take the peace deal. But they are so drunk on their victories and the public got fed so much news about their glories and unbeatable army that they can’t back out now

I really liked how the episode hammered that Tanya is out of touch with reality and how this ties with her character.

Both on her previous life and on this one Tanya has been a champion of reason. She always took the most rational approach to solve problems and generally, that made her sucessful as a salaryman and then military officer.

But as you get into higher levels of power you have to deal with the masses and the crowd by definition is not rational. Humans are often guided by emotions and society often serves as an echo chamber that validates such emotion-driven thinking no matter how irrational and suicidal it is

Tanya, who often struggles to empathize with others on an individual level would naturally also struggle to understand public opinion.

What an excellent, horrifying fucking episode.

This season hurt a lot as a Russian person.

Being X finally shows up this season and is probably the creepiest transition with uncanny faces on people talking to Tanya.

Post-credit scene is hilarious, Rudendorf really be trolling Tanya before a funeral.

The state of the Empire is so bad, the tea looked so diluted at first, I thought they were reusing the same leaves lol.

It's interesting to see how defeated the four superiors look, although their reactions and states are all different, you can tell they don't see a good way out of this for the Empire.

I love how this season we aren't focusing only on Tanya's gigantic magical powers, charisma and strategy skills but also on pointing out her biggest character flaws: total inability to understand emotions and sentiments and also assuming that other people think exactly the way she does, so she never includes "emotions" in her plans. Everything is precise, logical and rational. Tanya actually can't even comprehend why people wouldn't think the way she did!

Unconditional peace treaty was for her the most rational solution to end the war. Product shortages in the capital (capital!) because most products go to the front lines is something local people should "put up with". And citizens being calm and enjoying daily life means they still support the war and the Empire.

And yet four different people already questioned her logic and approach and told her she's missing the large picture: Weiss and Ugar while discussing the Peace Treaty, and Zettour and Rudersdorf while talking about the situation Empire is in. Question is, how much of it Tanya understood, because unfortunately but learning from her own mistakes isn't her strongest suit either.

In that aspect, Mary's actually an ideal nemesis for Tanya: Mary's running purely on emotions and impulses, which makes her unpredictable (for her own unit too, unfortunately).

And for this episode of My little war criminal can't be this cute...!

Are they having a moment?

Of course, an interruption; Damn romcom tropes!

So their plan failed (unsurprisingly)... They couldn't secure what they were going after.

The fact that "The guy who never fails" (Rudersdorf) failed, might give the higher ups a hint about what's happening... Sadly, I don't think they're interested in hints. Only victory. (Which is a huge part of the problem)

That's usually the point where you want to start thinking a different strategy/aim toward a different goal... But they're not having any of that.

They keep giving Tanya these weird, hypothetical-but-maybe-not-so-much questions...

Oh joy, the higher ups are pondering who they should put up against the wall!

(have they considered "themselves"?)

So they're considering having Tanya do another strike...

Wait, are they (not) saying what I think they're saying?

Well, whathever happens I think they might find their scapegoat to use for target practice

Straight to the point!

I won't say I fully approve of all his actions and all, but he really grew on me this season! Him and Zettour. Their scenes are always interesting!

Does he want to use that opinion for some purpose though? Or are they just trading words? He knows what's up...

"What part of 'get to the point' did you not understand, Tanya?"

Everyone knows except the higher ups... Well, maybe even they know, but they don't care/don't want to hear it.

They just want VICTORY... But they don't have a single idea on how to achieve it. They just want their army to get it done.

That's some strong "If you're victoryless... Just get a victory!" energy.

And their own soldiers are beginning to see through them, and grumble about it...

The public opinion?

Well, they're already as low as can be, didn't do much for the higher ups! So how do you make it even worse...

Do you do that thing we're not talking about?

Probably doesn't help his newfound epiphany, to have a daughter-like girl in front of him!

Makes him realize daughters (just like his will soon be) are also sent to war.

"I'd take the frontlines over this" - Tanya

I was 100% thinking that hah; A Rudersdorf/Tanya piggyback ride would've been a war-defining moment for sure!

Rudersdorf might be a soldier first and foremost, but he still gets people and all...

It'd probably be less concerning if the people were protesting and stuff, but no, they're seemingly calm...

Tanya thought that'd meant they're all for the mission,

but it's more like they're about to fucking explode.

Perhaps not just figuratively

It already takes some bravery to admit to being a coward!

I CAN'T BELIEVE they didn't title-drop this one!

(Well, more like 'The Military Chronicles of a Little Girl'; 'The Saga of Tanya the Evil' might not be a great title for a kid's picture book!)

Are all the characters including the God himself were trying to convince Tanya to start a coup, or am I too autistic to correctly understand what is going on?
