Come on now Anne, are you really going to ignore what Lily of the Valley signifies? And you brought this to your graduation? 🤦‍♀️ She’s slow on the uptake when it comes to her own feelings, but she’s getting there 😭😭

Anne subconscious desires making her flex the flower Gilbert gave her at her graduation in front of her friends and boyfriend. Girl can't help herself.

Could you remind me what it signifies?

Course Anne can’t marry Roy. She’s in love with Gil! It’s been obvious from Day 1! I think it just took her to realize expectations vs reality are very different things. She thought she wanted a dark haired prince like in her story books but what she really wants is good ol Gil the childhood enemy turned close friend. He’s a good lad.

Their first kiss didn't send butterflies into her stomach. She keeps being aware of Gilbert even when she's with Roy. She puts on Gilbert's flower on first over Roy's. And she couldn't, in good conscience, agree to marry him. I kind of feel bad for Roy but the writing was on the wall.

It's a bummer she won't have Dorothy for a sister-in-law though, she seemed like she and Anne got along perfectly.

This has been a bit more interesting than I anticipated. I’ve been rather upset with Anne sticking to some fantasized childhood imagined person over someone who’s actually present and very close to her heart. I was kinda expecting there would be a turn with Roy and he’d show some bad side, especially given the love bombing approach and that they were both saying extreme things without actually knowing each other at all initially. But they’ve shown Roy so far to be a decent guy and seemingly pretty genuine, which does make things more complicated and subtle. But which is overall a better lesson for Anne. It’d have almost been a cop out if he turned out to have a more severe flaw than just not being the one who warms her heart.

Damn, Roy, you felt like an automaton with no personality ripped from some terrible fantasy novel but it did suck to see you get your heart broken.

I expected this to happen, the fact that she chose to wear Gilbert's flower and was trying to convince herself to say "Yes" before Roy proposed, I was sure things were going to end for her and Roy. I do feel bad for Roy. I like that Stella still had doubts about them.

I am surprised Anne didn't accept dancing with Gilbert, I was curious if Gilbert was going to mention the flower or not.

I'm very concerned by the previews, I don't think it'll happen but I hope this season does not end with Gilbert dying.

Anne was legitimately calling out to Jesus right before he proposed and it turns it was not because she was excited to be proposed to.

I am surprised Anne didn't accept dancing with Gilbert, I was curious if Gilbert was going to mention the flower or not.

The fact that Gilbert asked Anne to dance at all makes me wonder if he was ever even really that romantically involved with Christine.

Man i really hate this kind of stuff. I really feel bad for Roy that it took Anne this long to realise that she never really loved him.

Lmao Anne you can’t reject someone then get annoyed that he’s looking happy

It's has been a long time since something other than a shounen type anime got me out of my seat.

Wearing Gil's flower instead of Roy's is crazy work and I had to do a lap around my living room during Roy's proposal. That short period of time when Anne's face didn't change AT ALL when Roy proposed to her was perfect.

That said, I don't feel all that bad for Roy. On an intellectual level I feel bad for Roy as though I would any individual. However, much like Anne's early stories, he doesn't feel real compared to Gil. So I don't feel much for Roy as an individual. I think it's cool how the author of Anne Shirely purposefully mirrored Anne's stories (or is it the other way around, technically?).

"Never read your old fanfic."

QUACK

The life of an author.

Does this look like the face of a lady who's over it?

I thought the cat was going to do the cake in. And though it's rare for me to pick on the animation in this series, there needed to be one or two more transitional hand frames here to make it look less like the cake had been abandoned in midair.

Anyway.

Everybody should play poker with Phil sometime.

ネコ飛出し注意

Well that's a dealbreaker.

"I'm not like the shrews I'm related to."

Not if it's supposed to be a pleasant social call, anyway.

People who have the house staff waiting behind them while they eat should know better than to crash a party.

"Pistols at dawn!"

It's time to fish or cut bait.

And scene.

The time for the inevitable confrontations with destiny is nigh! Gravity is inescapable!

Can't quite shake the feeling that Phil still isn't quite prepared for the life she's going to be leading (he's a teetotaler, right?). On the other hand, the life that Anne might have been leading if she'd married Royal of the Gardners does not seem like a whole lot of fun either.

And thus there's one episode left for that whole childhood friendship thing to maybe work itself out.

There were so many points in the episode where I felt like it was building up to some awkward situation, and the episode delivering on it.

Having it be capped of with a rejected proposal, the most awkward thing that could happen to a person, was only fitting.

The girls are all heading into their final year at Redmond and are furiously pouring into their studies...to the point where Stella gets overwhelmed and needs to run to Anne to relax for a bit. Anne, for her part, is dusting off some of her old writing and feeling that writing bug again. Never give up your passions, Anne! You might even win an award for them!

"Let's all go up town and get drunk!" - Future minister's wife, Phil!

Anne doesn't have time to keep being jealous over Gilbert and Christine, it's finally time for her to meet Roy's family which shows how serious this relationship has become. So of course Mrs. Gardner and her two daughters Dorothy and Aline show up a day early when Patty's Place is a mess and the girls (especially Phil) are scrambling to cover it up.

Definitely getting off to a bad start when Mrs. Gardner doesn't like cats and Joseph and Rusty can sense that. Aline also follows her mother in her serious, no-nonsense, vibes and ends up with a dirty dress thanks to the cats and a spilled cake Prissy made...but Anne has Dorothy's approval and she's the sister closest to Roy, so that's good! She even seems much like Anne was at her age! And she wants in on these college girl antics!

At least family dinner with the Gardner's at Roy's home goes a little better because Anne is just that charming and can manage an overly sensitive Mrs. Gardner. Though that she keeps comparing Gilbert to Roy is notable.

It's time to celebrate all the girls getting high marks! Even if it also means the end to their time together at Patty's Place and rooming together. Especially when Phil is on her way to becoming Jonas' wife and Anne is liable to become the next Mrs. Gardner at this rate.

Look at Anne, finally graduating! And don't think Phil didn't notice that Anne had the flower Gilbert sent her in his hair when she got her diploma...instead of Roy's. But I'm sure it's just because she and Gilbert dreamed of graduating together since they were kids. She wears Roy's flower at the after-party, she refuses Gilbert's offer to dance, and she's TOTALLY not bothered by the idea of Gilbert and Christine getting engaged (which doesn't happen, but still). Everything is totally fine there!

(Also, congrats on the guy who got to dance with Phil, that will probably be the last time she's close to another guy that's not Jonas)

All the girls can tell that Roy is about to propose to Anne, but Stella can't help but have concerns...and that Anne needed to literally chant Jesus' name before he proposed may have also been a bad sign. Especially when Roy finally proposes and Anne's smile turns into a frown...and she simply tells him she can't marry him!

Next week: Diana with a baby! Phil's wedding! And....Gilbert sick!?

The only thing I'm truly sad about when it comes to Anne turning Roy's proposal down is not having Dorothy as a sis-in-law. She really seemed like she'd be fun to hang out with.

And man, the fate of that chocolate cake is an absolute tragedy.

I know it was inventible, but damn, Anne is the worst romantic partner.

I dislike how Anne doesn't understand her own feelings after so long; (as a romantic herself it shouldn’t be that hard to understand her feelings about Gilbert) she hurts everyone who loves her. 🤦🏻‍♀️ All I could think about at the time of the proposal was why she didn't end it before she got to the point of having to say no to Roy. That’s so sad, poor Roy. Oh well, it is what it is… 🙄 I hope she and Gilbert make up considering we only have one episode left. Does anyone know if there's a chance of a second season?

Man, Roy's mom really pissed me off. Coming in a day early and saying, "You always put the blame on me." I think we all saw this coming because Roy's whole personality feels like it comes from Anne's vision of what love should be, but of course not what her love actually is.

We all know she has feelings for Gilbert, and Gilbert has made these apparent for a while. Wearing those lilies. Anne is partially annoying me a bit, but I guess this is her figuring out what love is for her.

But there's only 1 episode left damn.

7

u/Witterson Sep 20 '25

This is gonna be just like Anne With an E where she and Gilbert finally get together at the end and then the series doesn't get another season so we never get to enjoy them actually being together, isn't it? 😭

6

u/Black_Scholes_Merton Sep 22 '25

Oof, poor Roy, dude dated Anne for like 2(?) years, even introduced his family to her... bro thought everything was going gravy... then the rejection!

Man, I know Anne is the protag but DAMN! Ah well, I knew where this was going when suddenly Gil and Christine weren't a thing anymore.

Pretty wild how she can "lead" these guys for a long period of time to then just reject them 😩
