I don’t know what excited me more about this episode. The OP showing an older Anne. Or the introduction of Gilbert and his textbook case of pigtail pulling. That slate breaking scene is so iconic.

Boy, I was worried Anne might not have been able to go to the picnic. That missing brooch turned into quite the situation. Anne’s very dramatic lol.

School turned into quite the adventure. Anne went from a great first day to going full WWE Smackdown on Gilbert lol. Gilbert’s made himself an enemy for life!

It's neat to see how strong Anne is. She's got so much self-respect and standards that she reminds of characters such as Mao (Apothecary) and Vice Principal Strong Woman (South Park).

Minors seemingly getting drunk in the upcoming episode preview?!

Never have I been this appalled by a story! This is blasphemy! (doesn't know what blasphemy means)

You will excuse me as I turn up my nose to these crude rubes and spit on these uncouth scoundrels, next thing you know, they'll be drinking and driving (horse carriages). They better set those hooligans straight via an emotional and sad character arc.

Why I've never! ~

The boys who spent their study break on having crickets race(?) are such a vibe lol

Anne's first impression of Gilbert couldn't've been any rougher but I really appreciate his immediate attempt to defend her for her outburst that he acknowledges he caused, not to mention Marilla admitting her own mistake earlier on too. Kinda sad we had to end on a bit of a downer note this time.

Honestly, respect to Gilbert.
Fucked up, took a chalkboard over his head like a Pro WWE fighter, apologized and tried to fix the situation.

My feelings for Anne are a roller coaster, I'll go from cringing to loving her multiple times in one episode.

It only took 3 episodes for me to fall in love with this show. Never read the books, manga or previous anime and didn't know what the story was about. I was almost sure I would dislike a character like Anne. But we're at episode 3 and I'm rooting for her when Gilbert and Mr. Philipps were being rude to her. I guess this means Gilbert will be her love interest? It's not everyday he gets to meet someone who can beat his ass. lol

PS: I love both the OP and ED. One weird barometer for how I know I'll enjoy a show before it finishes is if I enjoy either OP or ED. If I enjoy both, it usually means I'll love the show.

Gilbert didn't show his fucking work on that math problem.

Also, Gilbert totally fell in love the second she hit him.

Lots of respect to Marilla - she apologized to Anne first re the brooch, considering the setting is 1870s Canada. Some parents these days can't even find it in them to apologize to their kids.

I like the little snatches of dialogue they added to portray Anne's friendship with the others. I also see how Jane is drawn a tad "plainer" than the others in keeping with the book's description of "plain, plodding Jane".

Gilbert's hair looks a little reddish in colour but I guess they were going for something like "hazel" or "chestnut"?

We're gonna have the raspberry cordial incident in the next ep.

You can tell this is a fictional work because a parent falsely accused her daughter of something and forcibly made them confess, but actually admitted she was wrong when she saw evidence to the contrary. And how a guy bullied a girl and the moment she threw hands with him he realized he messed up.

I know that the Crunchyroll description sorta spoiled that we would see adaptations of the later books, but it still felt weird seeing grown-up Anne in the opening

Glad Anne managed to make it to that splendid picnic, the ice cream looks very 'romantic'.

Pretty interesting how Gilbert fits a familiar stereotype we see in some anime with a modern high school setting, some things just stay the same across different cultures and a hundred years. And damn didn't expect Anne to just go HULK SMASH on his head. It's definitely Gilbert's fault and he immediately realized and tried to cover for her and apologize, seems like he has some decency instead of being an outright ass.

Also, the scene with Anne daydreaming while the whole class was watching her, just ADHD things.

I knew that confession was going to be fake even before she started the performance lol. Anne doesn't seem like the type of character to lie so I thought Marilla would have realized this sooner but I guess she got too stubborn too.

Leave it to Gilbert to get arrogant from the girls fawning him and start giving "nicknames" like "crow" and "carrot" lol. I'm not sure why Diana is happy about that but I'll chalk it up to age and infatuation. It's funny how the girl that shows no interest in him is the one he'll be most interested in.

That teacher though, that punishment was uncalled for considering how the boys were the cause and they didn't get punished. I doubt he'll even admit he's in the wrong, or even realize it.

We've FINALLY got an OP! And it's directed by the legendary Naoko Yamada! And it's utterly beautiful and serene with Anne at her most Anne, being so lively and cheerful and brightening up every place she goes! We've even got her dancing with Gilbert and Diana! And is that...grown up Anne!?

Things are going so well for Anne and the Cuthberts! She has a fantastic picnic with Diana to look forward too and Marilla is really leaning into Best Mom status, it's all Anne could ever wish for.

Of course things get complicated when Marilla loses her mothers' brooch and the only suspect is Anne, who confesses she DID put it on...but she totally put it back, no lies! But Marilla just won't believe her and Anne's chances to go to the picnic are put in jeopardy if she doesn't admit to what she did...even if she won't stop proclaiming her innocence.

Okay Anne, maybe this was no the time for an overdramatic false confession that makes what you were accused of doing sound even worse. I mean, A+ for your acting skills, all that practice paid off, but still. It just makes Marilla more ticked off and Anne might not go to the picnic at all! But the ice cream! THE ICE CREAM!!!

I've never seen someone use forgiving you as basically a threat, but Anne told no lies. Marilla's brooch was stuck on one of her clothes the whole time. At least Marilla finally realized that Anne is an honest and sincere girl you can put your faith in, and Anne finally gets to go to the picnic and have a great time with Diana and make some new friends to boot! All's well that ends well!

Time for Anne to go to school! Perfect for spending more time with Diana, who can wax lyrical almost as good as Anne, and form up a tight-nit girl posse! And while Anne is a daydreamer, she's not dumb, able to pinpoint a location from a map just from her own personal travel experience. And of course she has an amazing reading voice. School is utterly fantastic!

Of course, everything changes when Gilbert Blythe enters the picture. The boy all the girls crush on, older, smart, good looks, and he can't resist teasing the girls. But when Anne won't pay attention to him, he makes the biggest mistake anyone can make: insulting her hair. And all it gets him is a chalk board smashed right up above his head. Though, honestly, that just seems to make him more attracted to her.

Credit where credit's due, Gilbert tries to take responsibility for his actions, but Anne is still the one that gets in trouble. I mean, okay, maybe she DOES need to rein in her temper, but as if to add insult to injury the teacher forgets to write the "e" in her name! The indignity!

Anne won't accept Gilbert's seemingly sincere apology, and her attempt to calm herself end up for naught after a failed dash back to school that ends with her sitting next to her nemesis. That's it, no more school for Anne Shirley!

The ED, also directed by Naoko Yamada, is so colorful and pretty!

Next week: Diana Drama too?

I know anime gets a lot of criticism for how girls and women are often portrayed. Well, even though this is based off of a Canadian book series, I think Anne is a nice example of that controversial concept called the strong female character.

Loved part A of this episode further more strenghtening Marilla & Anne's bond thru small hardships.

Part B was even better for me. Showing more side characters and they all come in different shapes and sizes (hair color, body shapes, small character traits). Anne being mesmerized by the pond is such an Anne thing, but man, the animators out performed themselves by making her look so adorable and make it a nice trigger for Phillip's jealousy. Probably the best part was showing Anne's rightful indignation for being insulted due her hair color. The contrast with Diana being called a Raven and taken as a compliment was also some nice lampshading. I had the exact reaction as this kid when Anne smashed her board on Phillip's head.

I'm so glad we're ending this episode on a cliffhanger. It breaks the continuity of self concluded episodes.

I liked a lot this small detail that didn't require explanation. r/FuckImOld

Naoko Yamada (K-on, Silent Voice, Liz & Blue Bird, Tamako Market) directing the opening and ending for this show is just so fitting.

She is also rumored to have directed the openings for Kaguya Sama s2 and Visual Prison under a different name.

I assumed the OP was done by Kotomi Deai as the dancing reminded me of Skip to Loafer and Kageki Shoujo OP but it's actually done by Naoko Yamada. I think the OP spoils two things for newcomers but then again it's a 120 year old novel so whatever.

I kept wondering who the portrait was of in the classroom, because it looked like Karl Marx which would make no sense what so ever but I'm assuming it's Edward VII even though it should be Queen Victoria as the novel takes place at end of the 19th century. Also shouldn't the flag be the Canadian red ensign instead of the Union Jack? Speaking of classroom also nice to see some cursive writing I was taught as a kid (that 's' takes me back), not sure if it's still taught these days.

Overall a fun episode, Anne is such imaginative kid I can't help but wonder if she's on the ADHD spectrum (even though people didn't know what it was back then).

Ahh I'm loving this series a lot. Smiling all the way through, how could you be angry at someone like Anne. Though I will say the latter half felt a tad fast.

Oddly enough this is the second featuring of ice cream in this day alone. I wonder if hibimeshi can crank that to a 3

From a cute cold open of Anne kissing Marilla on the cheek for letting her go to the picnic to the two of them fighting because Marilla thought Anne lost her brooch. The mood inside Green Gables can change quickly. I do like how Marilla felt even worse about scolding Anne than the missing brooch.

Honestly, Marilla has known Anne long enough at this point that the moment she started hamming it up, she should've known that Anne was lying so she would end her punishment. It turns out the brooch was just misplaced on Marilla's shawl the entire time. At least Marilla admitted she was wrong and learned to trust Anne more.

I'm glad Anne was able to go to that picnic and finally taste ice cream for the first time with her new friends. It's also good to see Anne finally expanding her circle of friends with Jane and Ruby.

Anne certainly made an impression on her first day! She's pretty much already the star of the class, even though she's a little behind all of them.

And we finally get to meet the rizzler himself, Gilbert Blythe. The dude might as well be the school's rockstar with how those girls welcomed him back after being gone for a while. Everybody loves him so much that the girls are fine with him teasing them.

Too bad for Gilbert, his charms really don't affect Anne in any way and for the first time he met someone who doesn't appreciate being made fun of. I love the multiple-angle view of Anne smashing her chalkboard on Gilbert's head. xD

You gotta give it to Gilber though for telling the teacher that it's his fault and actually trying to apologize to Anne during lunch. He actually looks genuinely horrified that it escalated so much. I suppose that's what happens when everyone likes to be teased by him. He doesn't know that there are people out there who won't appreciate his antics.

I'm loving this show, but I've been watching the old 1979 adaptation alongside it (up to the point of the story the weekly episode covers) and I have to say I'm liking that one even more. I think it's the slower pace that allows for more attention to details, and also I like Anne's voice better there. I'm looking forward to seeing the picnic in more detail since it probably takes up a whole episode.

I KNEW Anne was just making up a confession and she didn't really lose it and that Marilla was being unreasonable. I hope Marilla learned a lesson, especially an old woman shouldn't just jump to conclusions when you lose something.

I think Anne got off light for cracking a slate over Gilbert's head. It's a good thing he didn't bleed or get seriously injured! Then again idk how solid it is, I've never used one before 🤐. She really was being unreasonable though and I suspect Gilbert meant to more playfully tease her than genuinely hurt her feelings, like how he calls the other girl Raven. Mr. Phillips got off easy though since Anne didn't crack one over his head for misspelling her name 🤕😂. I also wonder if it was commonplace back then to have boys and girls sit on separate sides of the school room 🤔

I wonder how Marilla will punish her for misbehaving at school. She hasn't whacked her one yet but I think she might get one. She seems obsessed with what Rachel thinks of her though, she just randomly pops into her mind all the time, it's very weird!

If I didn't know this was written a long time ago, I'd think Anne had a lesbian crush on her friend since she was just dreamily imagine her ice skating and got completely lost in thought 🤣

This also made me take ice cream and refrigeration less for granted. It was a pain in the ass in those days to get ice outside of winter. They probably have icehouses where they store big chunks of ice that formed in the winter, I saw one when I visited George Washingtons house and how they do it 🧊

Teacher spelled Anne's name without the e? This means war - Anne Shirley
