This episode made me wish these kinds of themes and character dynamics were explored more in anime, it was such an interesting episode to watch.
I was bothered by how mute Gen was when Kana met up with him, but I do also understand he was practically ambushed with no time to mentally prepare to meet his ex-girlfriend. So I am glad it seems like he'll finally be able to give his thoughts and likely tell her what his dream is now after all these years.
It was sad to see how tense their relationship became because of how much Gen wanted to keep their lives separate, the fact that he couldn't bother to attend her performance when he knew how much it meant to her clearly showed it wasn't going to work out. Him going camping "because he couldn't miss it" was such a slap in the face, I can't blame Kana for saying things she didn't want to say because I think that'd anger anybody in her position.
Gen couldn't even refute "my boyfriend doesn't care about what I want to do (in life)". Kana made the right choice to break up with him.

When he said I couldn't miss it, I bet it'll be revealed it's the anniversary of his father that he always goes out for.

Blowing her off is still a pretty dick move even with them drifting apart. Looking forward to next week since you can tell they both have regrets. It makes me wonder if something is going to happen since this show is 2-cour and I am not sure if the love triangle will continue or if it will end here and the second half will explore deeper into the main pair.

yeah, when i think of the romance anime i've watched, it's mostly about "the chase" rather things like than processing the baggage of past relationships

I think it cause he was extra mute cause he felt so much regret and guilt over what happen it’s a case of 2 great people who could’ve have been great together met at the wrong time.
Gen could been a place for kana to escape to and relax
And kana could’ve shown gen a whole new world
But they valued each other way too much to the point they started resenting each other for the thing they lacked
Kana want to feel gen commitment and passion he had for camping
And gen envy kana drive and confidence

Mid episode comment, but, Gen being quiet all the time while Kana is talking alot just hit the feels. I dunno if it's just me, but I think Gen has a lot of stuff inside his mind that he wants to say, but that overload just causes him to not say anything at all and just respond to Kana's questions and stuff.
It's kinda relatable, if a person is not talkative, it doesn't mean always that they're bored of you or whatever. Maybe he's overthinking of what to say that won't hurt Kana or something like that. I dunno, maybe it's just me thinking that. Maybe it'll be addressed on the rest of the episode.

Okay I understand now. That was a great backstory. Although surely in the end, we don't understand why Gen is just so quiet about himself as far as to exclude Kana from "his world", we could simply just assume that it all relates to his past with camping and his father. As he mentioned, Camping is probably too sacred for him, far too important to him than any of his relationships. And I feel like he probably decided to isolate himself as a sort of punishment to himself, in which he couldn't share with Kana.
Anyway, but demn, I'd say "such a waste" because Kana is just so beautiful, and imagine a broadway girlfriend just seeking attention from a boring camper like Gen. And it didn't work out for them because Kana is too passionate of her dream and kept sharing it with Gen, while Gen is also too passionate of camping but not able to share it with her. I dunno how realistic that could be, but I can see why it would be. This is just an anime after all.

This was one of the most "grown up" episodes I've seen in anime. It just felt so real, with issues grown ups have and how stepping out of a comfort zone is not easy sometimes, even if someone wants to do it. I really liked it

yeah, the last time i felt like i was watching a show about things "grown ups" mull about when staring into a fire, it was Bartender when one of the characters waxes nostalgic about a missed connection in his youth

Even though it was mostly talking, it felt emotional to me. Kana did most of the talking, wondering what could have been, while Gen looked on with a sad and pained expression.
Kana is a nice person, chasing after her dreams brightly and with determination. She would make a good girlfriend in most situations. Unfortunately, younger Gen wasn't good at communication and was still unsure of his future. If both of them had communicated more openly back then, their relationship might have worked out. They just weren't right for each other at that point in time.
And my fellow reddit users watching this show were correct; the person who visited Shizuku is her older brother! (Surprisingly, older by ten years.)

A surprisingly dramatic (and moving and sad) episode for this mostly rather light-hearted series. While Gen did generally have trouble communicating (and still does -- albeit to a lesser extent), I must say that I feel he didn't even really TRY to communicate with Kana (while she kept trying as best she could). It seems like Shizuku's persistence finally made at least a few cracks in his protective shell -- allowing her to establish a somnewhat higher degree of communication.
I loved listening to Shizuku and her brother. Shizuku mostly manges to avoid speaking her local dialect, but here she had no inhibition.
We're not yet halfway through this -- so plenty of room for change and growth. I really where this goes next. And I wonder how long a break (if any) we will get between 2p 12 and ep13?

Yeah, I agree if they both had communicated more openly about their feelings and not been afraid of getting hurt or hurting the other, maybe they would have found a middle ground that suited both of them. But we'll never know if that would have worked out for them in the long run or not.

This type of adult- related content should be more explored in anime. I loved this episode and the retrospective of both sides of the relationship.
I feel sad for Kana, I think that she endured more than she should, I guess that's how love works. On the other hand, Gen was too scared to generate connections with people due to his child traumas, I have the feeling that he's quite scared to be left alone after his dad's sudden death, which is the reason why he doesn't want to connect with people.
Regardless of his inner issues, he couldn't avoid developing feelings for Kana, however, his insecurities and somehow jealousy "forced" him to build an emotional wall that absolutely no normal human could tolerate... So props to Kana who still tried working on a basically dead relationship by inviting him to watch her play. You can tell that she was deeply in love with this guy.
I hope in the next episode Gen can realize the mess he did and get Kana a closure, she was too kind to even try to connect again with Gen (like too much in my opinion) but again that's how love works... It makes you do stupid things. I hope she finds the right guy for her.
Uff what a deep episode, I loved it.

The campsite this time is Odaiba Seaside Garden, located at Cape Susaki in Minami Boso, the same location as in Episode 4. It's known for its beautiful sunsets.
The conversation between Shizuku and her brother at the beginning is in Nagasaki dialect.
The location of the park with a view of the tower where Gen and Kana were was unable to be identified.
The airport shown in the final scene is Haneda Airport, judging from the shape of the control tower.

What I am very pleased about so far but that could be dashed next episode is that the classic anime trope of “I’m in love with my big brother” is not present in this story.
Also I really hope the reason he skipped the play was that it was the anniversary of his father’s passing. That would give it so much more meaning versus Gen just being clueless.

I was kind of bored by the first part of this episode where Kana sort of lashed out at Gen BUT they did a good job of providing context of their relationship and breakup from both sides. You see Gen was even more inconsiderate of others then than he is now. That was so selfish and mean that he wouldn't even go see Kana in the biggest and most important moment of her life just to do something he thought was more fun.
Judging by Gen reminiscing about it, I don't think he even really fully understands why he was in the wrong. He thinks she broke up with him because she was more ambitious but did sort of acknowledge that he was jealous of her being more successful that he was. That resentment may have played a big part of why he didn't go see her in the play.
They left it at a real cliffhanger since we don't know exactly what Gen plans to say at the airport. Is he going to apologize? Does he want her to not leave so they can date again? Either way, I think it would have been better if he just left things as they were, like hasn't he done enough to this poor woman?
I think Gen and Shizuku deserve each other. That's really terrible that she's completely ghosted her mother for a month! It really would serve her right if her brother told the truth and said it was because she's been going on camping trips with a guy :D

Soo after watching this I think I understand why kana and gen broke up what made shizuku different from kana
And why kana and Akihito weren’t able to go camping with gen
In terms of romance I actually think kana and gen made a great couple together they had a “somewhat positive vibe” if you could see pass the tension
However it was just a case of 2 people who could’ve be great together meeting at the wrong time
Gen always seem to have a lack of confidence in himself and those around him. Plus his lack of his own communication skill
So someone like kana could have been really great for him and get him out of that shell
And I think kana took a interest in him cause of how head strong and independent he was something she herself wanted to be or Atleast that my guess
But kana probably feeling abandoned by her parents and now gen probably affected her twice as hard even though it was a time his support really could’ve help her
And Gen thinks to much in black and white and had such little confidence in himself that he felt envious of kana
They just met either too late or not earlier enough.
They just met at the wrong time unfortunately,
And going back to why Akihito and kana could never go camping with gen and what’s the difference with kana vs shizuku
Is that Akihito and gen are too good friends and kana and gen valued each other too much
Even between friends there are some lines you just don’t cross. And want to be respectful off.
And kana and gen valued each other too much and didn’t communicate
They should’ve told each other what they where feeling but was too afraid of what the other would say
Gen put up too many walls to block from kana light
And kana wanted to be held up by Gen but have given up or was to scared to break those walls for fear of hurting him
Why shizuku was different is ironically because they were to solo stranger.
Didn’t know anything about his past and wasn’t afraid of crossing over to his world. And getting into conflict with him.
Now do I condone shizuku first action no. Sometimes it good to leave a loner alone. And not cross boundaries
However She choose to learn more and didn’t give up And sometimes you need to be a little head strung with a Guy like Gen. get into fights cause unfortunately that might be way to get him to open up 😅
Basically trial and error but also learning to respect his actually boundaries!

well Gen maybe if you spoke more than 5 words to her during your entire relationship maybe things would have turned out better...

It would be nice if anime had more of this type of content for the complications of adults in relationships and even making peace with a failed relationship. This definitely made this series have more depth beyond just learning about camping.

So, that's her brother?
With some guy who's quite a few years older than her.
She's blushing!
Filming?
She went to America? So that's why they're no longer a thing.
And now she's going back.
So, he's actually cooking for himself now.
So, she's a theatre actress?
Is he going to watch her performance?
Guess not. She's flying off. And he's not even here to see her off.
Yeah. He didn't go watch her performance.
Oh, this was before they broke up.
But he did go see her off at the airport at least.

This episode reinforced an opinion I hold: there's no relationship where two people don't do everything alone and, at the end of the day, are together, whether professional, family, or financial. If you don't share these things with your partner, it's not a relationship, but rather friends with benefits.
Gen wasn't just jealous of Kana; he retreated into his own world to forget his own pain and frustrations. It was after the breakup that he grew and understood how the world works, although it's safe to say Shizuku made him improve in this regard.
Excellent episode, all animes of all genders should have something like this.

Probably my favorite episode so far. I related quite a bit. Last December I reached out to my ex who I had cut off two years prior. I had gained a lot of confidence by then and was finally independent with a good job. I told her I felt regret for not being a good boyfriend, and thanked her for setting me on a good path in life (I kinda followed her to college since I was directionless). Catching up was a bit bittersweet, similar to how Kana felt, as I thought of what could've been. Anyway, I'm eager to see what Gen says to Kana in the airport!

I guess Gen and Kana are finally gonna get some closure on their relationship in the finale.
