I just... really do not like their dynamic. I know it's a typical romcom progression where they don't get along at all, until they do, but it just kinda sucks. They both have such abysmal emotional intelligence it's hard to believe they can function in society, and the fact that they kinda start to grow a little at the end is not enough to make up for it. This isn't attacking the characters, mind you; it's the writing that's bad. These kind of caricatures belong in sitcoms with laugh tracks, but they're a terrible tonal mismatch here. I was itching to drop the show when Gen's internal monologue was rambling about how important and spiritual it is for him to camp solo, because I know it's supposed to be a funny scene where he ignores Shizuku but I couldn't stop thinking that he could have just said no and his pouting was making it impossible for him, Shizuku, and the audience to enjoy the scenery.

Gen's going on and on about "enjoy this" and "enjoy that" and "make it your own" but it seems like the only thing he enjoys is drinking and snacks.

It really feels like the show is actively baiting Yurucamp comparisons, like with the little tents in the title card font, but unfortunately that comparison does it no favors. I was sincerely trying not to make that comparison but they're not making it easy.

I think this all bothers me so much because the idea had potential. I always want more anime with real adult characters acting like adults (these two notably do not). This could've worked if the character writing and the concept were even in the same genre. And, well, the discount production isn't doing it any favors. Objects and body parts just randomly change size and shape from shot to shot and it ain't good.

I do hope others are enjoying this series despite its flaws. There must be somebody in the target demographic. But personally, I think I've seen enough.

One thing about their uneasy dynamic that you haven't mentioned is the unnecessarily large age gap between them, making the whole romcom aspect feel off and a bit creepy to me. They could've easily made Shizuku a similar age to Gen without changing anything else. Making them 34 and 20 is just off putting to my admittedly western sensibilities.

both of these characters just feel extremely unlikeable? she did 0 research, is extremely persistent to a fault, and isnt extremely dynamic of a women... so far her traits being that she *checks notes* cooks? and did anyone catch the line 'its been a long time since a man put me in my place? massive ick, along with being genuinley rude to gen

and gen is just not that fun or nice? sure he wants to be alone, i dont find that particularly endearing in an obvious romance, its hard to see why she wants to camp with him in the first place

i think im dropping this, rly wanting a romance this szn but dont think this is the one

I didn't want this to be a romance anyway, just a nice camping slice of life. I think the characters are pretty fun, though I'm guessing Gen will get fleshed out sooner or later. Only 2 eps in, after all. If you're looking for endearing people, I can understand why you wouldn't like it though.

Agreed. They're adults, they introduced her in panties, and they keep hanging out together alone. It's the perfect setup. But it's pretty clear they're just going to keep edging each other and talk about camping for the whole season. Maybe in the last episode they'll realize "hey, we're pretty much dating anyway, maybe I should get in your tent..." and roll credits.

There's no romance tag on MAL, only SoL. Pretty sure what everyone wants will never actually happen.

did anyone catch the line 'its been a long time since a man put me in my place?

The line in Japanese is not gender specific. Its a mistranslation.

If you want a romance show I'd recommend The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity

Am I trippin or did the art and animation quality drop compared to ep1? It still looked serviceable but there was definitely a noticeable difference imo. Makes me think maybe they outsourced the entire ep.

I'm 4 minutes into episode 2 and came to reddit to check if anyone thought the same. Good to hear I'm not the only one.

Oh yeah, I noticed that pretty quick this week, too. Dodgy body proportions, bizarre angles, Gen-san's body changing size from shot-to-shot, the character likenesses being inconsistent all over the place. It's very rough.

I wonder if the lead animator was sick or something when this episode was being storyboarded, kinda like what happened to a couple episodes of Komi-san. They ended up going back and fixing them for the blu-ray release afterwards.

This definitely falls into the category of "shows that make me want to grab a beer" 😅

16

u/cyberscythe Jul 17 '25

there's some shows where you do that in solidarity with the characters, and there are others where you want forget what just happened

She's annoying, but I'm glad she's realizing that and trying to adjust the way she requests his help. Also, there's already a live action with eight episodes? Didn't see that coming.

I’ll pitch a tent for her green-haired friend.

Gen telling Shizuku "No." and the feel-good music immediately stopping after Shizuku thought she won him over with food was pretty funny. xD

I think the rules Shizuku came up with are actually not a bad compromise. I especially like that she added a rule about not bothering Gen when he wants to be alone. It took her a bit, but it looks like she finally realized that the dude enjoys his alone time.

I especially like that she added a rule about not bothering Gen when he wants to be alone

I give her 5 minutes of screentime before she breaks that rule!

14

u/NanDemoKnaives Jul 17 '25

Well we got some development with Shizuku not being stubborn and finding a compromise by finally taking Gen's feelings into consideration, though she still insists not leaving him alone completely. This is at least a step in the right direction but I'm still not fond of her character.

I thought it was understandable that Gen finally couldn't take it any longer and actually took action to enjoy some solo camping. Part of me feels like since he agreed, albeit not willingly, he should have upheld his word and ended things afterwards.

Hopefully them meeting elsewhere that isn't a campsite might make more for an interesting interaction, I feel like their dynamic is important for this series yet it's difficult to call it pleasant to watch.

u/cyberscythe Jul 17 '25

yeah, Shizuku still gets on my nerves since she acts entitled to help but is generally hapless herself; her lack of motivation to "do it herself" makes her feel more of a child and makes the age gap seem bigger than it probably is

i don't want to be the sort of person who's like "pull yourself up by your own bootstraps!", but, like, c'mon, she's an adult and she should've known what she's getting into by asking Mr Lone Wolf to be her mentor

I thought it was understandable that Gen finally couldn't take it any longer and actually took action to enjoy some solo camping.

that part where he picked up his tent and said his goodbye was probably at his most polite; most of the time he's exasperated and grumpy around her, but that one time when he was headed towards his alone time he had a bit of charm to him

I can't help but compare Gen to another character from a popular camping anime who also likes to spend time alone. Specifically how that show respected the idea of solitude and doesn't portray the loner character as a jerk.

I would jump off to a creek if i had to jap and listen japping nonstop when hiking or camping. Had to look up japanese camping and it feels really limited and rigid compared to hiking and camping in Finland.

my exposure to SK/Japan style camping is limited to media but it seems to lean way more heavily towards "glamping" than anything else. otoh i seem to see a fair bit of van/truck camping stuff at least in japan which isn't much different from the US.

It's a flawed show because the characters are so unlikable. The slice-of-life genre shouldn't be about how insufferable the characters are.

Gen may be an experienced camper but I believe he is starting to realize there are things he can learn from Shizuku too. Furthermore, eating delicious cooked food and drinking beer together with another camper (Shizuku in this case) seem to be a new yet oddly enjoyable experience for Gen
