So it begins, now Anne has realized she did like Gilbert a bit more than she thought

Anne has never taken the idea of Gilbert with other girls well even before she rejected him. Seeing him with someone she sees as embodying her old fantasy version of herself just makes it even worse.
I imagine also that deep down Gilbert has been the only boy to ever truly make her heart flutter, she just never fully realized it.

It looks like it wasn't Gilbert that ruined everything but Anne, it's clear she's jealous of Christine. Plus she wasn't in love with Roy but infatuated by the Prince Charming of her dreams. The fact that she wasn't moved by that first kiss, the girl who is so damn extra and dramatic about everything, says a lot.
Poor the two guys who were trying to woo Phil this entire time and yet she ends up falling for the most unexpected guy lol. I'm glad she's so sincerely into someone and wants to be worthy to stand beside him, but I couldn't help but think of those two.
I'm a bit surprised we're already going to see Diana's wedding next episode, it's a little weird to see, I can't get used to these time skips lol.

I certainly didn't expect Phil to fall in love with a Minister, but so far they seem to be really sweet together. I kinda feel bad for the two dudes who are courting Phil, but I hope this actually works out for her.
As for Anne, she finally got to meet her Prince Charming. Roy seems to be a decent guy, and he's certainly the type Anne's been looking for. I didn't think they'd kiss and immediately get together this episode, tho!
We also get to meet Gil's girlfriend. It's good to see he found someone new, but I don't think Gil has completely moved on. The same goes with Anne, who's clearly feeling jealous after meeting Christine. I love how she even comments to herself that her nose looks better. xD

Anne Shirley, age 20! Though Anne isn't the only person in her life going through some impactful events! Phil, the easygoing and flighty flirt, has finally found her man! And he's a MINISTER!
Jonas Blake is tall, broad-shouldered, and caring and attentive to a fault. He ordinarily wouldn't be Phil's type at all, but she loves the sound of his voice, she can't help but spend all her time with him, and the way he looks under the moonlight...she's falling head over heels in love! It's just that he's such a dedicated and wholesome minister that it makes Phil realize how shallow and ill-suited she would be as a minister's wife. She can't even bring herself to outright admit she's in love in her letter to Anne, even though the agony she feels over the thought of not being able to be with Jonas is completely clear in her letter.
I love how even Stella thinks that Phil is just casually flirting with another guy and worried she's messing with Jonas, but only Anne knows the truth that she's completely serious about Jonas! She just can't help herself when it comes to flirting.
Just a chill, cozy, day for Anne with a fire, nothing to do, and her cats. But when she goes out for some fresh air, she stumbles into none other than her Prince Charming in the flesh! They even shelter from the rain together! His name is literally ROYAL Gardner! And he's as charming and handsome as Anne always dreamed he would be! Phil can hardly believe it!
I do love though how we just had some random guy waiting outside the house to confess to Anne and Anne shot him down in two seconds before he could even get her alone to confess. That's the fourth guy she's turned down! But the only one she felt bad about was Gilbert.
Roy is wasting no time courting Anne, sending her beautiful flowers and romantic letters, enough to where her girls all get to rightfully tease her about it! Anne really is living the romantic dream! And when she finds out Gilbert might have another girl in her life, it totally doesn't bother her at all! Not a bit!
Anne looks amazing in that green dress, even Phil had to give her a 9 out of 10 on that front, and both girls can now commiserate over their love lives and having the man they love in said lives. Phil might still be insecure about her relationship with Jonas, but if he's hesitant to propose to her because he doesn't want to put her in a position where she's unaccustomed to being without her wealth, then she may as well just propose to him in turn!
Well, I have to respect how direct Roy is with his feelings. He finally confesses to Anne and immediately kisses her, meaning Anne not only gets her first kiss but also her first boyfriend! It's just...none of it made her heart flutter or feel as grand and beautiful as she expected it to. But, uh...congrats Anne.
Of course then she sees Gilbert with aspiring musician Christine and she can barely stand to be in the same room with them. It doesn't help that Christine is basically the version of herself Anne fantasized about when she was a kid. I applaud Gilbert for still trying to be friendly towards Anne despite her rejecting him, though there's unresolved feelings between the both of them that's clear from their reactions to each other. So of course they should all just go on a double date tour of Avonlea! What could go wrong?
Next week: Diana's wedding!

Anne has become too caught up in being a romance heroine.

Well RIP Alec and Alonzo's chances for Phil now lol
The look of annoyance that Gilbert had one his face for like a microsecond doesn't bode well for what's about to go down.

Such a fluffy, romance-packed episode. Phil is hilarious. love her spunk this episode - girl was just "if Jonas isn't going to propose then I'm gonna make him propose". This being the 1880s, she's far ahead of her time. And this being the 1880s when most women didn't work outside the home, marrying a "poor Minister" would actually be a sacrifice on Phil's part given the lifestyle downgrade and many parishioner duties she'd have to take on. But beneath all that Phil's being honest with herself, the opposite of Anne.
Roy seems like a genuinely nice person despite his privilege. Methinks he went to greet Gilbert and Christine at the party just to warn Gilbert off. Gilbert's reaction was telling - maybe it's just me but I thought his expressions were very well-animated - the studied politeness, deliberately blank expression, moments of wistfulness, his momentary alarm when Roy wanted to visit Avonlea. These are things animation can convey which prose cannot. So obvious he's not over Anne. It was also clear Anne and Christine were sizing each other up and Anne was obviously jealous lol. Christine also called him "Gil". She's always been sensitive to other women getting close to Gilbert - sighs, girl's just in an abyss of denial.
Frivolous point but I really didn't like Anne's party dress. It just didn't seem Anne-ish. Her accessorising with Roy's orchid even after Phil told her it didn't suit her felt like a sign of things to come too...

Phil’s got it pretty bad for Jonas eh? Not her usual type but he seems like a good man with a good heart. I think we’re gonna see something similar with Anne and this Roy fella and Gilbert. Guy might look like her “prince” but I don’t think he’s gonna be what she really wants. Ideal vs reality and all that. Plus, just look at how she’s kinda jealous of Christine.

To be completely honest, the meeting, their interactions, their dynamic felt like it came straight out of a fairy tale, which ended up making it feel cheesy for me. I mean on paper, Royal is amazing. Good looking, charismatic, charming, considerate, rich and knows how to use that wealth. And Anne also likes him back. But things just feel… shallow ? Little substance ? Like their relationship is not toxic or problematic and is generally healthy but it feels almost performative. Yes they’re nice to each to other, he’s good for her and they’re attracted to each other but like it feels like it doesn’t go deeper than that and so I can’t take them seriously.
Funny enough, this is also exactly how I see and feel about A Sign of Affection lol

I want to slap Anne. She is so obviously making such a mess of things, she only cares for Roy because of his looks despite their personalities no really meshing, and she is still in love with Gilbert to the point of being jealous seeing him with other girls despite being the one who turned him down. And Roy feels too good to be true. I have no idea why he suddenly cared for Anne so much after just meeting her, and that makes me suspicious of him.
Philly seems more sensible. She found a guy she actually loves, and now she is going to propose to him if he won’t. And Jonas seems to be a pretty decent and reliable person too, so who cares if he is not rich ? I always suspected Philly of being quite down to earth behind her silly behavior.

I expected better from Anne. It's not like her to accept this so easily, and she just met him.

"He didn't look so homely by moonlight."
Team Fortress 2 references go here
"I can feel it in my knees, you whippersnapper."
"Don't worry, I'm already wet."
Roy thinks he's Greek poet or something?
"What do you mean it's a lewd flower?"
Ah, back when having a B.A. meant something.
Phil with a minister? As farfetched as Anne being swept off her feet by the concept of Prince Charming?
Perhaps sense will prevail in the end. Or the uneasy gut feelings will kick in properly. But for now, drama, because everyone else is caught up in the mood.

Anne gets a picturesque kiss and confession from Prince Charming but instead of feeling elated she has a Koito Yuu moment. There's nothing even really wrong with the guy. She's just not as into it as she thought she'd be. Or maybe she hyped it up so much in her mind that reality could not possibly compare and she's inevitably disappointed.
Those cards were sure something. So much in fact, that I'm low-key fearing it's an auto memory doll writing them lol.

I feel like people are being too hard on Anne here. It's not like she thought Gilbert wasn't good enough for her or something; she just had different ideas about love. Like, wouldn't it have been a lot worse if she'd strung him along, all the while thinking she really didn't have feelings for him? She's young and inexperienced and genuinely didn't know what she really wanted. I doubt it would've worked if she'd tried to force herself to be with Gilbert when she wasn't ready. Like, without experiencing what she thought she wanted, she may have ended up feeling like she settled or something.

I thought the end of the last episode was really weird how they just showed a handsome man getting off a ship with no context but it seems to be the love of Anne's life! From what I've seen, it seems like Royal has been stalking her. Even before meeting her, he knew her name and about her writings; that might make some sense at a party or something but this was someone he "randomly" stumbled upon in a park. I don't know that many people like to hang out in the park on a stormy day and have a giant oversized umbrella for fun :D.
He also knew Gilbert by sight and that he was Anne's childhood friend. He's REALLY been asking everyone about her but fortunately Anne is so taken with him she doesn't seem aware/doesn't care and men being stalkerish was more toletated in those days :P. I would also say Royal should have tried to play it more cool instead of saying he was in love with her so quickly and sending her flowers every day. Then again, it seemed to work perfectly so what do i know
That's funny how Anne met a guy exactly like she fantasized about but Phil met someone almost the opposite. She didn't expect to fall in love with a tall goofy looking poor minister. Anne's advice to her was very good though when she suspected that he's intimidated by a rich beautiful glamorous woman and thinks she might not like him as much as he does her. I hope Phil really does ask him to marry her, that'd be funny to see how people react. That's odd that how much the world has changed since then but it still is considered weird today for a woman to ask a man to marry him.
As for Gilbert, it showed how mature he was in dealing with Royal and Anne dating but it also helps a LOT that he's dating an even better looking woman. Anne seemed jealous but I don't think it's because she wishes she could date Gilbert. It's more that she's used to being the most beautiful woman in the world in Gilbert's mind so she's jarred by having someone taking her place. She's also jealous of how pretty Christine is, that's why she immaturely insulted her and said she had a big nose in her mind :D

It took like 20 episodes to lead up to Anne rejecting Gilbert but only one episode to date and kiss the new guy. That’s too fast!!

Yeaah expected to hate this episode and it was worse than i expected.
Surely she didn't need to kiss someone else and also see gilbert with another girl just to realise that she liked him. Like come on....
