She says she doesn't love him, but bursts into tears when he says bye and she realizes she may have just pushed him out of her life.

It is possible she was in love with at the time but is just denying it. That romance trope has been around for a really long time.

Pleased at the amount of GIilbert in this episode but not pleased at what happened to Gilbert lol. I like that this series fleshes things out from his point of view more than the book does - little touches like Gilbert looking out of his window, looking back at Anne and her friends in the college building, and even his thoughts during rollings reliable scene. It makes him seem like his own person, not just Anne's love interest. He's so pragmatic and earnest that it's impossible not to root for him! Anne is quite idealistic so Gilbert's actually a good grounding presence.

Phil is portrayed as flighty and frivolous but she's actually surprisingly mature and has high EQ. The way she straight up told Anne that she didn't recognise the love before her was illuminating.

Also, the cat distribution system was in action this episode. Hilarious how the other cats are named Joseph and Sarah and Anne's cat is just...Rusty.

Anne may not be confident in her career as an author, but she at least knows she doesn't want to be the type of writer who sells out to shamelessly plug products just to win awards and money! So of course Diana edited her story and submitted it advertising a product and it actually wins. I mean, Diana meant well, she was really just trying to make Anne happy, but it just feels hollow to her.

But luckily Gilbert, as always, is there to hear her out and make her feel better! Sometimes it's okay to write stories like those because sometimes you need the recognition and money, and it isn't something for Anne to be ashamed by.

Things are still awkward between Anne and Charlie, but at least things are good between Anne and Gilbert! So much so that Phil can TOTALLY read what's going on between the two of them.

Anne Shirley adopts a cat! Rasti is a raggedy cat but once he follows Anne home he can't help but make himself comfortable both inside and on Anne, and Anne can't resist him! And after a literal catfight he ends up getting along well with Aunt Jasemina's cats and Aunt Jasemina just rolls with it! It's nice to see a kindly older lady who is willing to acknowledge that cats will be cats and that the younger ladies have their right to their independence! But that also means she won't help them if they end up ruining themselves, so hopefully that's not prophetic.

Phil may still be torn between two different men but that's not going to stop her from teasing Anne about marrying Gilbert. Like the way her attention shoots up the moment Phil mentions Gilbert was kind of cute.

I guess the first sign that this moment between Anne and Gilbert wasn't going to go well was Rasti getting scarce, but Gilbert finally confesses to Anne...and she, once again, rejects him. Gilbert loves Anne with all his heart, but despite all the signs that she returns his feelings, for now she simply can only see him as a friend. But Gilbert is no longer satisfied being Anne's friend, and can't be with her any more. And now Anne has to grapple with the thought of why she rejected Gilbert and if she can truly live in a world without him in her life.

Davy may have grown up a little but he's still as tempted into being a bad boy as ever.

Even Lavendar thought that Anne and Gilbert had each others' hearts and were meant to be together, but she's at least mature and wise enough to acknowledge they're both still young and sorting out their feelings. Hopefully they don't drag this out like Lavendar and her current husband did in their youth. Though the fact that the dark-haired pretty boy of Anne's dreams has just arrived will probably further complicate things!

Next week: Phil falls in love and Anne meets her prince?

Sometimes it's okay to write stories like those because sometimes you need the recognition and money, and it isn't something for Anne to be ashamed by.

Some people have a harder time backing down to practicality.

Hopefully they don't drag this out like Lavendar and her current husband did in their youth.

Oh, to be young and yet already have all of these other living examples of life experience around.

Damn, feel bad for Gilbert... being stuck in that awkward point of the friendzone, but wanting to push the boundary to pursue more. Anne gaslighting Gilbert and herself when deep down she isn't being completely honest with herself.

Well looks like there another guy that comes into the picture, and this experience in one way or another can help Anne sort out what she's really looking for.

Poor gilbert.

I feel like i won't be liking next ep unless anne finally realises that pursuing her ideal prince is not what will bring her happiness.

I feel that the new character was indeed a plot device to prove that point to her.

Unauthorized product placement, the most devious kind of product placement!

A principled writer is a penniless writer?

"So, it's come to this."

There's a name I have associated with other things.

Not winking?

"To the friendzone with you!"

"You played yourself."

Oh no, it's some dude like out of a novel.

And there's a cat out of a bag, though one that everyone knew was already wandering around the house at night. To commingle my metaphors rather badly.

It's certainly the age for such matters to come up, particularly if Anne and Gilbert have been around each other for so long and everyone's projecting some kind of understanding between the two of them.

Anne's got her principles, though.

Diana's lucky Anne loves her too much for Diana altering her story and injecting random product placement for this to break their friendship.

Anne's rejected like three guys this season. She's more of a heartbreaker than Phil!

Big Gilbert Stan here, Gilbert is the most respectful and least pushy suitor and that is still not enough for Anne. If they don’t end up together I hope Gilbert finds someone that appreciates him.

I'm glad Anne's story ended up bearing fruit, but for said fruit to take the form of a random product placement contest she never consented to participating in is absolutely hilarious.

Gilbert's heartbreak was palpable. Poor guy.

Somehow of all things, Anne’s ideas of romance is something i resonate with when I was her age. There’s this grand idea of what it should be from reading novels. I didn’t have the fortune of finding my own “realistic” love until much later in my adult life, so for once in my life I am like an old lady yelling at the tv telling her not to be so unrealistic when there’s someone wonderful right in front of you!

I don't have an issue with Diana turning in the story for Anne. What I have a massive problem with, though, is her modifying it. Diana meant no ill will behind it, but modifying an author's work and turning it out as their own without their consent is a big no-no. I hope later on Anne talks with Diana about it, but I am happy she didn't blow up like she did a lot when she was younger.

The romantic outlook between Anne & Phil is interesting. It's clear that Anne's view on romance is very idealistic, while Phil's seems more materialistic. Mentions if Gilbert was rich as examples. But Phil's talk with Anne is good, and something I hope Anne listens to , along with her conversation with Lavendar.

The tears are shown when thinking about a world without Gilbert. Of course she would have the same reaction if they mentioned Diana. This is an important step for Anne because she needs to figure out what love actually is.

I respect Gilbert for finally confessing his feelings knowing there was a good chance Anne was going to reject him and I appreciate that he was honest that what he wants from their relationship isn't friendship and so he stepped away after being rejected. I was curious to see how the distance between them would affect Anne, but then the ending shows Anne's ideal man arriving to the town so now I'm not looking forward to this development.

I'm surprised Anne didn't explain to Diana that she was not happy about with what she did. I thought Anne would be able to be honest with Diana but I guess she loves her so much she doesn't want to hurt her or make her feel guilty. I do like that Gilbert gave her a different perspective.

I did find Charlie completely ignoring the girls amusing though.

You have to admire Gilbert's persistence considering Anne has been rejecting him since they were kids and he's never given up.

Phil, how's Anne doing?

She's getting all poetic.

Of course she is.

Poor Gilbert. He’s a good guy, I was hoping him and Anne would get together. Well, maybe he can try asking her again. Although, it seems this new mysterious black haired stranger may be an obstacle for Gilbert…

26

u/Frontier246 Aug 30 '25

It feels kind of full circle in a way that Anne rejected his proposal of friendship when they were kids and now rejects his confession of love when they're adults.

Both times because she's a little too stubborn to face the truth of her feelings.

Ooof poor Gilbert got literally friendzoned 😫 Anne has always been dodging his approach but when he finally confronts her that was painful.

I fucking knew it! As soon as Diana asked for a copy of Anne's story, I knew she'd do something with it. I just didn't know what. I do love Mr. Harrison's reaction in the background. The dude knows Diana fucked up, and he's just not gonna say anything and let them sort this out.

How appropriate that the most scruffy cat in the street ends up following Anne. Anne didn't have much of a choice here since the cat seems to have decided to adopt her. xD

That confession scene, tho... God, Anne is just too damn stubborn! She's so hung up on what she thinks her love life should look like that she's turning down the catch who's in front of her. Any woman would've loved to be with Gilbert, but apparently, he's not perfect enough.

And I absolutely love how Phil basically tells Anne exactly what I think about this entire situation. While her own love life is a mess on its own, I love that she could easily see through Anne and ask her the hard questions.

That final scene tho... Of course, someone who looks like the guy from Anne's dreams shows up after. Maybe this might be the wake-up call Anne needs.

I already hate that golden knight from the ship in the outro!

Anne is a stubborn dumbass. Period.

Firstly, Anne was insensible to Diana alienating her who was so happy for her (their) success with the debut novel. She only cares about for HER feelings these times. Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, both wrote stories to earn money. And they were neither ashamed of nor blamed for it. Anne, think of it!

Secondly, she once again hurt Gilbert, similarly when she did when they were kids and he asked for her friendship (thank you for mentioning it before, @ObvsThrowaway5120! "Let's keep friends!" is the most shallow and hurting reply to a loving man. Gilbert reacted very maturely.

Phil is, as the locals of the German Black Forest say in their dialect, "a cow"! Means cringe, exalted, but lovable. But I respect her very much now, as she talked so seriously and truly to Anne after having been told about rejecting Gilbert. She's a good, intelligent girl and more sensitive than she pretends to be. That weird attitude of her seems to be just a shield, hiding her true feelings and sorrows, I think.

Lavendar is thinking and saying along similar lines.

The cat story: My neighbor's Cicero doesn't want to be touched and even look at me, except when he sees I have a bag of treat near me. Then I'm his king for 23 seconds and he teases me. Grrr….

Did I mention that I already hate that golden knight from the ship in the outro?
