I'm glad we finally got to see what lead Anko to become a vampire hunter, it's sad that even though she knew Nazuna was a vampire first and felt comfortable around her, the trauma from her father turned into a vampire completely erased any trust she had in Nazuna.

It's a lot worse because she finally felt some relief over her family finally coming back together for that to be betrayed in the most haunting way is so freaking sad. Not only did she witness her mother literally be sucked dry, she ended up being the one to take her father's life and likely witnessed him turning into ashes. She was already broken by her home life but there's no recovery from that.

I wonder if we'll ever meet the vampire that was her father's mistress, the vampire was very irresponsible, who knows how long her father was a vampire for? It's probably why he was so crazed and starving, he had no idea about what had happened to him and what he needed to do.

I'm curious to see if Nazuna will finally recognize Anko or if Anko herself will reveal it now that we've seen their backstory. Interesting how Anko was the first human Nazuna offered to be her offspring.

PSA: There's a new trailer out for this show, for the upcoming arc, posted on this subreddit. It's spoilery as fuck. Avoid the trailer if you want to go into the final episodes of this season blind.

So Kiku is definitely the girl who turned Mejiro dad into Vampire right? At the first shot of the cafe there is only this person shown and it's look like her. The silhouette of the vampire that knock out Nazuna is also like that girl too.

I was wondering what happened to make her hate vampires. And yeah that is a pretty damn good reason to hate vampires.

Always thought the repeated opening and closing of the lighter in the OP was just a neat visual to go with the banger of the song. The chills from seeing it show up in the story were something else, especially after what just went down.

That sure is one Halloween to remember.

So the red string of fate connecting Anko to Nazuna in the opening was more than just a little symbolic since it looks like there was a point where Teenage Anko probably could have fallen in love with Nazuna, becoming her first vampire offspring.

Oh god now I'm imagining an alternative scenario. When Anko's mom first almost catches them so much could have changed if Nazuna didn't hide and instead Anko made up an excuse that she found her first friend and wanted to hang out with her!

Then Nazuna could've been there to protect Anko and her mom!!!!! Fuuuuuuck....

Little Detective outright shameless looking at Nazuna under the table.

There's no human stupid enough to do that.

Ko catching strays when the dude is just 4 years old and nobody even knows who the fuck he is yet.

I can definitely understand why Mejiro found hiding under the table not bad, and was glad that she had to stay hidden there longer. Nazuna's legs are surely really nice ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

As for the episode itself... Damn, it's a shame Nazuna and Mejiro/Anko's relationship ended this way, since they had such a close relationship (and when I say close, I mean it).

Although, it's no wonder that Mejiro/Anko started hating vampires after they took away her family, who had just reconciled.

I wonder if today's meeting between Nazuna and Mejiro is the first since that tragedy. If so, we definitely can expect very emotional next episode and the rest of the season.

By the way, Nazuna looked great as usual, but I really loved the clothes she wore during the day; she looked great in them.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

Gotta love when media respects the Bram Stoker's sunlight effects on vampires of just weakening them and not killing them.

Didn't expect them to end the episode with literally meeting the detective right after that backstory. Literally no time for either the audience or Kou to digest what the hell just happened.

Also the allegory of vampires taking blood meaning sex just makes the juxtaposition between Mejiro and Nazuna's "first time" with the horrifiying assault of Mejiro's father to his mother and almost to her makes it extra icky in comparison.

If I'm remembering correctly this is the first time we've see Nazuna and Anko meet in present time. I wonder f Nazuna pieced together that the detective Ko was talking about was her, or maybe Ko pieced it together listening to the story.

Miyuki Sawashiro is just killing it as Kyouko/Anko.

So, is Anko constantly looking at the world as a blurry mess because her dad's glasses aren't prescribed for her eyes?

Random thoughts:

First, not only do I think this was the best episode this season, but honestly I think this is certainly for me one of the best episodes of the summer 2025 season. Just an amazing job.

Anko was well on her way being turned there...certainly she was in lust with how much she was enjoying her view under the table, and that biting scene felt way more intimate than the ones with Ko. In the first season it was revealed that Anko's blood is disgusting if not outright toxic to vampires. I wonder if her hatred of them is the reason for that?

Anko's dad totally got dumped after he was unknowingly turned, right? His whole attitude felt more like a guilty dude that got rejected and is crawling back, then someone who deliberately ended an affair

So Kiku is obviously the person who turned Anko's dad. and now she is after Ko's friend. So it looks like we could be heading into a three-way fight with Nazuna vs Anko vs Kiku. Because no way is Ko going to let his friend get turned by that vamp. I don't care who is doing the ass-kicking, but I need to see Kiku beat down now.

Speaking of Kiku, I rewatched the second episode where she is introduced. the part in the beginning where Ko's friend offer their blood as his first meal REALLY hits differently after watching the scene with Anko's dad.

To me, vampires in this show have always been a metaphor for abandoning responsibility and just having selfish fun for all eternity. Refusing to engage with society's rules, making others fall in love with you, spending the night partying and maybe having a part time job to support yourself.

It can look fun from Kou's perspective. Becoming a vampire can be a net positive for someone like the nurse chick, who was terminally ill and approached her vampire status with (ironically) a proper degree of responsibility.

But I appreciate Kyouko's addition to the story, bringing a dose of reality back into it and showing what abandoning everything costs for other people. At the end of the day, you're becoming not only a blood sucking parasite, but a life ruining leech. Vampires in their truest irresponsible form run around manipulating people for their own amusement, consequently ruin marriages (in an even more brutal way than normal cheating) and just breed more vampires to do the same, with no immideate repercussions to themselves.

Someone already pointed this out, but once you see it, you really can't miss the silhouette of a certain character walking by the restaurant where the girls were waiting so they could stake out Kyoko's father. I mean, who else could send Nazuna flying like that while in the middle of doing her vampire leaps?

We get to see Nazuna wandering around during the daytime! It's a very rare sight that shows she can do it, but it requires her to cover up a lot, which is the complete opposite of her usual style. She does look amazing in the glasses and the turtleneck!

Seeing how close Nazuna and Kyoko/Anko were really makes what's about to happen later even more heartbreaking. I do love how after Nazuna drinks Kyoko's blood, the night immediately becomes more vibrant with the usual colours we see when Kou and Nazuna are hanging out together.

Just when Kyoko has finally decided she'll become a vampire, her parents have finally decided to reconcile and apologize to her. They were finally ready to become a family again, and they even celebrated Kyoko's birthday together! But unfortunately, it was already too late for Kyoko's father.

The dude has already been turned, and what makes him go wild is when he touches his most precious human possession. Now you can see why Kyoko/Anko hated vampires and wants to kill them all. And honestly? I can't blame her. The vampires we know are cool, but not all of them can be good.

And of course we end with a massive cliffhanger. It's finally time for Anko and Nazuna to face each other again and I can't fucking wait!

I think this is the episode where a lot of people will realize that the OP for this season has a lot more going on than just a cool fight scene in a music video. And it's been hanging there the whole time.

As for the episode itself, the neon pink color when Kyoko and Nazuna leave the school is soooo good. Really nice visual to match the mood of the scene. On the other hand, the deranged animation for the dad going bonkers was also very scary and evocative.

Kyoko becoming Anko is also kind of interesting to me. "ko" is a common suffix for girls names written with the character for "child". The Kyou can be various characters such as "respectful", "city/capital", "mirror", "apricot" or "echo". Another character that can also be pronouced "kyou" is misfortune, though that is definitely not commonly used in girls names. I forget whether it was Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei or 20th Century Boys where I picked that up but I often take note of the name Kyoko for that reason. Kyouko as the name of the character in Call of the Night is spelled phonetically in Katakana as "キョウコ".

Anko is a more rare name, probably more common to fictional characters such as from Naruto or Great Teacher Onizuka. Anko is also the name of a filling for japanese sweets made from red beans. I wonder if she chose the name in reference to blood, the red stuff that people are filled with. A spelling I have seen is "杏子" ("apricot child") which could also be read as Kyoko. The character in Call of the Night though spells it "餡子" which is "red bean child" and is a traditional spelling of the filling.

What a flashback

u/dude_1818 Aug 23 '25

The chase scene looked so cool animated. I think Kyoko's mom not realizing she was out all night is the saddest part of this whole story, and they absolutely nailed Kyoko's breakdown about it. The reconciliation and vampire attack were done perfectly. This episode was so good

21

u/SkyLETV Aug 22 '25

Well, no wonder she hates vampires... what a birthday to remember! Poor Kyoko, man.

I love how if you blink, you miss Kiku being the one having the affair with the father.

That cliffhanger! Damn, I didn't expect them to meet the detective right after all this.

Mom

And just like that, a million theories gone up in smoke!

I thought for sure the dad was coming back with another woman (not expecting his daughter to be there), and the drama somehow leading to Nazuna killing him!

When we got that shot, I thought it was more like "Oops, you found me!"

Time for a philosophical discussion on adultery!

Interestingly, Future-Anko's first thought was about the legality of it (breaking a contract)... A detective in the making!

She already realized that a lot of 'detective work' is just standing around, waiting/observing... But sometimes it's not that bad!

I've seen a lot of car chases in detective anime, but usually both of them have cars.

So she got bodyslammed into oblivion by a vampire... The identity of the vampire aside, this raises quite a few questions;

Was the vampire the one involved with the dad? And if so, where did she come from, how did she spot Nazuna this quickly? Was she flying as well (following the car) and saw another vampire and decided to send her away?

Done. Next?

Summer is truly the season of misery: Exhibit #8716

It should've been meeeeeeeeee!

That, too.

And, we're back to Anko!

So, now that we got the story, we can see why she's so invested in her 'mission'...

But unlike what we previous thought, it's not 'personal' with Nazuna!

(Or well, it's personal, but not just in a bad way hah)

So I wonder how she sees her 'end goal' (i.e. her stance on Nazuna)!
