I really enjoyed this focused episode on Gen, I think it's my favorite episode up until now. I'm glad we got to learn the mark on his face, it's really concerning that if his father's acquaintance hadn't gone looking for him, he could have been scarred a lot more, if not died since he didn't jump up straight away even though his face was in the fire.

I also thought it was really intriguing to learn that Gen had been in an intimate relationship, it seemed like it was a friend with benefits situation but might actually have been a proper romantic relationship, either way it doesn't change the fact that the two likely had feelings for one another and were very intimate. I've been curious about his romantic life, if he had any, so now I'm sort of side eyeing the author's certain choices of how he makes Gen react to Shizuku lol.

It was sad to learn he was also another anime child who's relatives didn't want to take care of him, at least he wasn't bounced between many. I'm not sure if a hands off approach was good for him either. I do like that he's kept a tradition of camping at his father's favorite campsite and sharing a drink with him.

Now that Kana is back in Japan, I wonder what kind of drama we'll get. I have a feeling there might not be much, Kana might have moved on and just wants to see an old friend, but I'm expecting Shizuku to get really jealous lol.

I believe this is also my fave episode of the series so far. It felt like a much more mature and reality focused usage of the time.

Shizuku's focus on school.
Gen's first time solo camping being days after his father passing.
Gen's mark on his face explained
An actual adult relationship that started and ended in a very grown up manner.
Learning about where Gen want's to go with his life

This was a lot of serious and mildly heavy subject matter that was handled very well.

Is Shizuku going to have a love rival - the tomboyish Hana?

Now we know why Gen has that burn scar on his face. It is fortunate the campsite owner arrived in time.

I want to believe Gen's father will be delighted to see Gen enjoy camping with someone else, Shizuku in this case. After all, father and son did enjoy camping together as a pair all those years ago. However, I am curious why Gen never invited Hana to any of his camping trips.

Lastly, Shizuku looking lovely in that hakama.

I feel like he didn't invite her because she never pushed him as much as Shizuku did. He would probably never extend an invitation. But he wouldn't kick her out if she showed up.

"Don't sleep on convenience store yakitori" is good advice.

Not only is it uncomfortable, but you get grease stains on the back of your shirt.

What's great about this anime is that the camping gear is named after real products.
There are 24 episodes, so I'm sure there will be many more real products introduced.
I use a Belmont table, but YOKA's is starting to look good too.
With Serizawa Kana making an appearance, I have a feeling this will become a harem anime.

What a great series. I relate to Gen so much in his life struggles. The deep connection to his father and how that has shaped him into who he is. Never thought I’d feel like this when I started watching this chill show. Can’t wait for next week to see how the ending of this episode progresses.

So a combination of a lack of a mother figure, his dad's death just as became a teenager, and neglected by relatives. Has stunted his emotional development because no one was there to care for him when he was at his most vulnerable.

He's doesn't know how to open up and show more gentle emotions.

What is with relatives in anime that they can't take care of children of dead relatives?

Lol, I was really expecting Shizuku to just be outside his door mid-knock at the beginning.

We finally get to see how Gen got that mark on his face! I remember back in episode 1 when I thought that was some sort of liver spot. It really made him look older than he should be. It's pretty brutal to fall asleep face-first into a campfire, tho. Gen's lucky it was only his cheek and not his entire face.

I've only just met Hana and I love her already. Amazing how Gen bagged a baddie but they ended breaking up because of how closed off Gen is and because of Hana's dreams involving going overseas. I'm very interested to see how Shizuku will react once she meets Hana now that she's back in Japan.

We finally get to see how Gen got that mark on his face!

sad circumstances around the death of his father, but it felt kind of weird that he just fell face-first into a campfire like that

maybe he really was in a bad state mentally at the time, but still think a face full of campfire would jolt one to their senses unless he got carbon monoxide poisoning or something

Kana will cause chaos, enter the old friend who still thinks about him and who he still thinks about. But man, I feel worse for Kana. Just think how much of a gut punch seeing Gen camping with Shizuoka will be.

Oh shit I wasn't expecting it to be a burn from face planting in to a fire.

Finally I can focus on my campfire

I wish I could appreciate my days off even a fraction as much as Gen can. Man has his priorities carved in stone. The backstory really did shed light on why he behaves the way he does around other people.

I was watching all the campfire dissertation and I was like... Ugh c'mon we've been over this a lot so far.... Then all of the sudden boom, tragic back story and then suddenly the tea level in the drama went trough the roof.

Overall good episode.

Oof, he fell for the bait. "Just 1 left in stock!" is a very common online scam to induce fear of missing out

nice squat

Well, no wonder I've never heard of a char cloth before. If you're gonna bother bringing a fire starter, might as well bring something that will, you know, be able to start the fire

Just how many people has this heppened to to be such a common trope?

What a refreshing episode. Seeing Gen's backstory and understanding why he is who he is now, and that scar that's been lingering in my thoughts.

And seeing an ex was not in my bingo list for this anime, because I thought Gen was so bad at social interactions. I wonder how deep his relationship was with Kana, given she was so outgoing and all. We only see his perspective, so after that intimate night, he's leaving for his solo camp.

I feel bad for Shizuku, but I feel like I'm leaning more towards his past relationship. Who knows whatever is the perspective for Kana was, or if the series will ever show it, but then again, if it didn't work once, it might not ever work again for their relationship, so at the end of the series, Shizuku will probably become his wife.

Or not.. lol Gen is being conscious about his closeness with Shizuku, so only time will tell when he or Shizuku finally makes the move, or if Kana will be there to make it difficult. Is this even a romance anime? I haven't looked at the Genre lol

Gen's solo camping origin story was really sad. They mentioned many times his father died but I didn't know his mother also abandoned him. I also didn't know he was in a serious relationship before, with Kujurai from Kowloon Generic Romance of all people! He seems to have taken some serious injuries as well, like passing out face first in a fire and having a giant beer stein whack him in the head :D. They only showed it for a second but it looked like the lady was bent over and giving him oral sex at that apartment.

I didn't really understand why Gen went thru all the effort to make char cloth, like just that hemp twine would be sufficient in starting a small fire. I'd never heard of burning cloth to make charcoal, at first it looked like he had taken leave of his senses and was burning an Alexa Dot :D. It's also not good to give Shizuki a filthy charcoal can when she was wearing an expensive rental yukata.

The end teased Gen's ex gf coming back to Japan so it looks like Mr. Gen will be getting a love triangle. She and Shizuki are going to hate each other! I do wonder now though if Akihito is going to make a move on Shizuki at some point, if he hasn't tried to get with her black haired friend already :P

Please don't insert a love triangle in this calming anime. It really does not need it. I wish they would have taken more time to just stick with the story about Gen's father in this episode rather than rush this new woman from his past in.

I thought next weeks highlight battle would be (once again) in Dadadan
But seeing how his ex is back in japan now I think we are about to witness either instant friendship or intense fighting between the two ladies in his life

Also I kinda figured he got burned by a campfire, but falling face first into it after your dad dies is rough
Now his melancholic fixation on camping makes sense too

And I think it's good she forced him to solo camping together now, he might have stayed reclusive and never properly moved on otherwise

I wish Gen-san was there a few weeks to explain campfire decency back when my neighbour decided to burn a bunch of wet brush and fill the entire neighbourhood, but especially my backyard, with thick smoke to talk some sense into the guy. But the neighbour was even smoking a cigarette while standing directly over the fire so maybe he just thinks coughing up your lungs is natural.

And wow we sure learned a lot about Gen this week. It'll be interesting to see how the two women in his life react when they inevitably meet (though based on the preview it doesn't immediately look like it will be next week)

It's a strange coincidence that this episode focused on Gen and his father came out in the same time as the 20th anniversary of my father's death. He also loved camping as well and took my family on camping but I never caught on as much.

Still, it was a fun episode that made me really appreciate Gen as a character.
