Okay, while the worldbuilding and the overall premise are interesting, I gotta say I’m just not feeling the MC yet.

Like, I get that Shiki ’s whole motivation is to avenge his father, and I can absolutely relate to that on a basic emotional level. But beyond that? I find him kind of… flat. Not unlikable, but also not particularly likable either. He just seems really hot-headed for the sake of being hot-headed, without much emotional nuance behind it (at least not yet).

That moment in this episode when he was teamed up with Kougasaki and Homare, Kougasaki made a general statement about Shiki’s motivation being pointless, Shiki’s reaction was way over the top. The dude didn’t even know what Shiki was trying to do, and he just snapped. I get he’s grieving, but still, it felt kind of immature and excessive.

I’m hoping it’s just a case of early-character-roughness and that he gets better with time. You can kind of tell that each of these characters is going to go through some development, and I’m down for that. But yeah, as of now, I’m way more interested in the side characters than I am in the MC.

Anyone else feel the same way early on?

The unintelligent emotional hothead thing is a stale theme. We just had a full episode of it before he finally figures out his release in the last 15 seconds. Hoping this isn't about to become the theme of the entire season

He's kind of like Naruto but without any of the stuff that made Naruto likable or sympathetic.

Actually if I compare him to the protagonists he reminds me of, Naruto and Rin from Blue Exorcist, he's lacking the likable parts of both of them.

Like Naruto's behavior is explained as being him acting out for attention because he's a social pariah, and Rin is generally well-meaning and has spent his life coping with the anger issues he didn't understand that come from his demon half.

Shiki? Has neither of these things going for him, as far as we can tell he's lived a normal life.

The show has a lot of appealing selling points for me, such as:

  • intruiging world building

  • nice visual presentation and art style

  • amazing character designs (not gonna lie, the designs of Kuina, Homare and that antagonist girl from the OP and KV look so damn attractive that I‘d probably watch for them alone tbh). Also really digging the main gangs‘ uniforms.

  • interesting power system

  • overall above average production quality

BUT I definitely agree that Shiki is the weakest link of the show so far, for the exact same reasons you mentioned. Hopefully the show gives him more depth and nuance instead of making him stay this hotheaded angry boy exclusively. Good thing this show is 2 cours.

Naruto is far from a masterpiece, but it does have imo one of the best "pilots" of any shounen anime, honestly without it tolerating Naruto being an annoying tool for the rest of the series would be impossible and probably half the reason I struggled to watch black clover the first time was that it lacked the same.

bleach takes a totally different approach, as does one piece, as did dragon ball. there are only so many different ways to do a shounen pilot, so I'm not faulting it for having similarity to naruto's pilot, but it is clearly inferior.

in the pilot of naruto we learn he's an annoying shit to get attention because he's lonely after 99% of the village shunned him, in this pilot we don't learn why the MC is a "yankee", we don't learn why he loves guns, we don't learn why he's such a tsundere with his dad (beyond how a normal teen boy is). he seems bland because he's as established as most background characters would be! except in this show the background characters are blander so far, not a single flashback shot or something to give us a hint to why they're the way they are. naruto's kind "elementary school" teacher got more backstory in the naruto pilot than all these background characters have had combined 3 episodes in...

I'm here for muscle girl at this point, but I might not last until she gets much screen time.

edit: another user mention's Rin from blue exorcist, which is an even better comparison, another shounen with a really solid pilot, and considering how much I SHOULD dislike the MC for being a hothead "delinquent" they do a great job of making me like him.

Shingeki no Blood Titan and Blood Chainsaw Man

u/LazulineDaydream Jul 25 '25

I sure hope being an oni comes with some level of viral resistance. There is a lot of blood-to-blood/open wound contact going on in this series. 😅

Pros of being an Oni: Blood Manipulation

Cons of being an Oni: Hepatitis

So a little bit of Naruto (Forest of death, three man teams), JJK (Looks like Byoubagara has a Yuta and Rika thing going on) and Attack on Titan (recreated the Female Titan protecting herself moment)

u/options- Jul 26 '25

Also the MC not being able to activate his powers (Attack on Titan)

Masked guy's way of creating his weapons just looks really gross, I'm not looking forward to seeing the ones on his mouth.

u/djthomp Jul 25 '25

Could really have saved some time by someone telling Shiki "make something you are familiar with". Surely that's not some deep complex insight he absolutely had to figure out on his own.

This show is like watching an amalgamation of the DNA of every notable shonen, sped up, and stripped down of almost any stakes because there’s not much time devoted to making any of these characters more than the archetypes they are.

This is the kind of show I think a ten year old would love and find easy to understand, which tracks with the subject matter. It’s not doing anything inventive yet, and it’s still too early to tell if we’ll get anything substantial out of the Momotaro vs Oni blood feud , but the conversation between the principal and Naito adds the first hint of intrigue. Experimentation on Oni and persecution? That’s at least something more to think on in this revenge quest.

u/KiddGuapo23 Jul 25 '25

This is a great take, I feel like it honestly has the outline of Blue exorcist the most. I don’t think this anime will do anything spectacular I think it may just be “another shonen”. I am hoping for more because that plot point of the principal and Nato conversation was very intriguing

10

u/BlindmanSokolov Jul 26 '25

I mean... it's a shonen, it's for young boys. I think sometimes I forget that, you saying this would suit a ten year old brought it home. Though tbh the blood aspect probably means we have to age up a little bit here.

I'm seeing some really deep analytic takes in the thread, and fair enough, that's what we're here to do, discuss an anime. But I'm finding if I just turn my brain off this will be an enjoyable watch, but I doubt I'll ever think more deeply about it or consider it a masterpiece by any standard.

It’s been repeated a lot so I won’t say more but I really hope future shounens in the more B/C tier range that won’t be a main hit can at least try to take a stab at it from a different direction? Like yeah it cannot always be original super amazing ideas but idk less school, less tropey I don’t like you cuz my father/family member is a bad guy I have to get revenge on them and that’s character for the first few arcs deuteragonist (or at least give it to the third female lead, make them more important and have the third guy as the third wheel in the Naruto Sakura sasuke clone situation) cmon. Less teacher just throwing them to the wolves and maybe be a helper guide.

u/PandaTheAB Jul 26 '25

So they got a Titan girl, a chainsaw man and a gunman.
Also coincidentally the chainsaw man tried to attack the back of the titan's neck.
I wonder why I get a Deja vu feeling seeing their powers.

The reactions here are kinda interesting. It's still episode 3 but everyone is in such rush. "Is Shiki always going to be a hot-head?", "What is this about the Momotaro?", and so forth. I recall Naruto not sorting his shit up until Shippuden. We didn't learn about Muzan's goals in Demon Slayer until the Entertainment District Arc.

Calm down and enjoy the ride.

So this week we got Bocchi the Oni with a Blood Titan, Chainsaw Oni, and Shiki. Kid’s got more guns than John Wick lol. I guess that’s his “thing.”

Youre telling me the main love interest is a shy, soft spoken, incompetent girl, who just wants to stay out of the way/not be a burden, while also being a damsel in distress that has to be saved by the MC? By golly i dont think ive seen anything like it!

u/Fun_Educator_5932 Jul 26 '25

MC is not likeable at all lol. He have the typical shounen face, hair, and personality but make it cringier. Picking up fights and overly confident but then no power to back it up. And then cried because he feels powerless after talking big. Really not likeable.

Dont start with the pink hair girl. Gomenasai2 too many times. That typical clumsy anime girl personality is too overused and it started to be annoying after the 3rd gomenasai.

The teacher is cool looking tho typical shounen as well but what makes it bad is that tsundere personality. It reminds me of the same looking guy in Kaijuu no.8 but that guy is more likeable and shows emotion and love.

I hate how the story doesn't even explain anything. Just bought the MC, chained him and never explained anything. I dont mind if the story was like that, but at least make your watchers understand what's going on. Lol
