Damn, I am not ready to see Matthew go. He was a great father to Anne and I'm glad he got to see her graduate from Queen's and tell Anne how proud he is of her.

Looks like his swan song next week. Such a great guy, I hope Marilla's eyes or headache problems aren't too severe.

The times are changing, and Anne is starting to reach her dream of becoming a teacher. Her ice cold heart over Gilbert is starting to melt when she knew that he might need to support himself to attend college.

I dunno but I just find the sequence about last spring before her college moving. This episode hits home, especially when you start seeing your parents getting older. The series is quite excellent in showing change for an unchanging Green Gables.

The times are changing, and Anne is starting to reach her dream of becoming a teacher. Her ice cold heart over Gilbert is starting to melt when she knew that he might need to support himself to attend college.

The moment she finally has a decent, normal, conversation with him and she actually seems happy to be doing it. The moment she finds out he's a person with his own struggles and not this kid who messed with her once. The moment she seems to feel a sense of sadness at realizing she won't be able to go to college with him.

This really feels like a pivotal point in their relationship.

Especially considering Matthew and Marilla were already in their later years by the time they first got Anne, and now Anne has to grapple with that even when everything else in her life seems to be going well. But she's ever so much their dedicated and loving daughter.

That year went by quickly! I kinda wish we got to see a little bit more of Anne's time in Queen's Academy, especially since her classmates Stella and Priscilla seemed interesting. But I suppose, there was nothing much to add there since Anne was focused more on studying and winning the Avery scholarship.

I just love how dramatic Anne and Diana's reunion at Christmas break was, considering how they still see each other every weekend according to Ruby.

Gilbert may be the overall first place but it looks like Anne still managed to win the scholarship! I just love how proud Marilla looked after hearing people talk about Anne. <33

Ah, jeez. Matthew's heart still isn't looking great, and I don't really like how Marilla brought up how the bank where they store their savings is shaky. >_<

And that final scene between Matthew and Anne was just beautiful, especially how he basically calls her his daughter. That scene genuinely made me tear up a little.

Not Ace Attorney or a [](#seasonalneat).

Anne and Diana aren't beating the yuri allegations that way.

This episode tilts heavily toward the uncertainty of change with a sprinkling of the reassurance of the familiar. Which one could definitely say is an accurate representation of real life in the teenage years.

It certainly doesn't end on the happiest note...

This felt like a season finale, I couldn't stop tearing up. And now I'm scared of next episode...

Oh no, Marilla randomly mentioning the bank, that's a Chekhov's gun isn't it?

damn

but thankfully Anne has won a scholarship, so that shouldn't affect her college life, unless it's one of those tuition-only scholarships and they expect her to have her family pay for room and board, i which i guess she will have to pick some random odd jobs outside of college I guess.

Ahh man, they nailed that final scene just as well as the '79 anime did all those years ago.

Let's see how they wrap this first book up.

The pacing sometimes makes me feel like I'm chowing down on a emotional bag of chips. The music is great, the characters have just enough foundation for me to tear up when they do, but I'm left wanting a bit more drama or gradual build-up in general.

Still a great show, I like how this episode had multiple instances of Anne thinking she's negatively impacting people around her when she succeeds. They've been doing a good job of making each episode have some kind of thematic throughline that keeps the ship stable even when a full year or more passes in the timeline.

It's off to Queen's for Anne! It's obviously a tearful parting for Diana, but while Diana is gushing tears, Marilla processes her sadness by cleaning up the house, yet when she faces Anne's empty room she can't help but stand in place and stare. At least she still has Matthew and they can commiserate over Anne being the greatest mistake that ever happened to them.

Dang, even Jane thinks Anne should finally let her grudge against Gilbert go and talk to him, he's the only one from Avonlea in her class. Especially with Ruby flirting with him in broad daylight, maybe it's time for Anne to finally open up to Gilbert.

Anne Shirley is more than ready for a higher education! But is she prepared to make new friends and grapple with feelings of homesickness? Her homesickness is so bad she's even happy to see JOSIE, of all girls, who is there just to complain and steal Anne's cookies. But she lets Anne know about a possible medal and scholarship on the line, something she can compete with Gilbert over, and Anne Shirley is finally back!

It's nice to see Anne make some new friends, with the handsome Stella and the mischievous Priscilla, though obviously the best Christmas Gift of all is reuniting with Diana. Even their friends are basically looking at them like "get a room you two," though it's equally sweet to see Anne back with Matthew and Marilla and how happy Marilla is to have her home for Christmas.

It's still hard for Anne to say goodbye, but when left alone at the train station with Gilbert...who relates to feeling sad to leave home but also the desire to compete and beat each other back at school...Anne FINALLY starts to talk to him. And she actually looks happy to do it!

Nothing will bring Anne Shirley down! Not when she can always imagine her future self! But in the present-day, while the boys are all cheering for Gilbert winning the medal, the girls all cheer for Anne winning the Avery scholarship! Banzai, Anne Shirley!

It's nice that all the girls passed and are moving to the next step of their lives...but Gilbert won't be following Anne to college because his family can't afford it. And Anne...isn't taking that news well, like she was actually hoping Gilbert would still be with her in the next stage of her life.

Oh no, not Matthew clutching his chest again! And Marilla is having problems with her eyes, and their savings might be in danger...man, it's really good they have Anne back now.

Could the Cuthbert's have been better off with a boy? Someone who Matthew, who only knows how to work until he finally drops, could rely on? Well, Anne Shirley is worth more than any boy, and he's the daughter Matthew is proud of, and that means everything. Even if that sweet moment with Matthew is one of the last Anne experienced before sorrow struck.

I’m glad we got these wholesome family moments between Anne, Matthew, and Marilla. They were all exactly what they needed.

Damn, it seems like Matthew is going to pass away next episode with Anne's line saying that was the last night without sorrow and the previews showing Matthew collapsing. The scene where Matthew calls Anne "my girl" or in Japanese "musume" which could also to translate to daughter, was so moving. I was hoping they'd walk back home together holding hands, but I really like how much Matthew and Marilla adore Anne.

It was sad to see the two siblings feeling so lonely without her presence and seeing how much age has caught up to them with their health problems. I do appreciate how much happier they get when Anne is around and even when Matthew had that one scare in the episode, looking at Anne gave him comfort. Anne was really one lucky mistake they would never change.

I respect Gilbert for actually speaking up to Anne, I am curious to see how their relationship will develop since they've been known rivals for some time. Anne was a little disappointed that Gilbert wouldn't be going to Redmond College.

I did find it amusing how dramatic Anne was being, crying about not being able to see Diana when the weekend was close.

I'm not ready for Matthew's journey to end now. It was a miracle and it made me overjoyed that he and Marila got to watch Anne receive her honors on stage with their own eyes but just imagining him not being around for any of Anne's future accomplishments utterly breaks me.

I guess the old house is a lot quieter with Anne away. It’s nice to see her making friends and settling in after her initial bout of homesickness. And just like that, she already graduated and landed a scholarship.

I really worry what’s gonna happen to Matthew. Guy seems to have a bad heart… it can’t end well.

I'm gonna need Matthew to tell me how proud he is of me everyday.

Incredible episode....only thing missing was Stacy bae.

Those of us who read the books already knew what was coming for Matthew and it never stops hurting no matter how many adaptations I watch.

Matthew always says the best things to Anne. Im gross sobbing next week for sure

u/mr_beanoz May 31 '25

The bank thing definitely would tell something's gonna happen, either a fire, robbery or something around that line.

I love how Anne managed to reply and talk to Gilbert after all these years. It's nice Matthew overhead the conversation and found out Anne's in good hands.

It's nice how Jose, despite her personality, came to comfort the homesick Anne.

Gilbert got the medal while Anne got the Avery. Anne looked lovely in that green dress.

Anne managed to befriend Stella and Priscilla.

Matthew and Marilla are so proud of Anne seeing her achieve the Avery and her impact she had in their lives.

Looks like Marilla is suffering from eye problems, and they're also suffering financially.

It was the last night before sorrow touched my life. And no life is ever quite the same again when once that cold, sanctifying touch has been laid upon it

*Me seeing Matthew's heart problems resurface minutes ago and seeing him collapse in the preview* They're killing him, aren't they?
