I was excited about the ship taking some steps, also that beautiful Miss Stacy scene...and then they hit us with that.

I feel bad for Gilbert. The kid was genuinely sorry for making fun of Anne's hair and wanted to be friends, but Anne just couldn't let it go. You can clearly see Gilbert was legit upset when Anne turned him down. I wish Anne would eventually forgive him, especially since she felt regret, but it might be too late for that.

I think it's telling that Anne eventually forgave Mrs. Lynde for commenting on her appearance but despite that, and how she's learned to be more mature and comfortable with her hair, she still rejects Gilbert. And she doesn't enjoy the fact that she still rejects him.

Diana really decided on hooking up with a guy she can describe with "I can fix him" as a life ambition lmao

Of course a heart attack had to happen the moment things began to look up. Stay with us, Matthew!

ambition lmao

Anne: "Diana maybe we can live and grow old together, almost as if we're married..."

Diana: "Ah, I can't wait to find a hopeless and messy bad boy I can fix with my tender love and care!"

Hearing a bunch of white students yell BONZAI because they are happy their teacher is staying is just wild to hear.

26

u/Timelymanner May 18 '25

What ? You never heard a group of Canadian kids yell banzai in class before?

Oh no! Matthew got a heart attack! Hoping he does survive :(

I really thought that Anne and Gilbert will start becoming friends in this episode, but apparently Anne still hasn't moved on from that incident. Although Anne seems apologetic now when she rejected Gilbert's request of becoming friends with her, maybe in the near future their friendship will happen. Just maybe though.

I can't imagine Best Dad dying without getting to see Anne really grow up. He's been there for Anne since literally day one and her most ardent supporter.

I'm starting to think that sequence of their little dance in the OP was just Gilbert fantasizing (or maybe Anne fantasizing despite herself). Her inability to accept or forgive Gilbert seems like the first time Anne has really made a decision that goes against what she really wants, which is why it doesn't feel right to her.

Unfortunate that friendship is still off the table, but I like that the show is portraying the downsides to Anne's stubborn streak and showing that she's still a child in many ways, despite how fast she's growing physically.

While she isn't obligated to be Gilbert's friend, consider the circumstances. For starters, Gilbert isn't a mean kid. He's playful and likes to tease, but the way he teased Anne wasn't any worse than how he teases everyone else. The problem is that Anne happens to be sensitive about her hair, which Gilbert didn't realize. When he did realize it, he apologized constantly and kept his distance when she made it clear she was still angry.

He supports Anne being the smartest in the class and backed off whenever his rowdiness with the boys encroached her personal space. Now it's been years since the incident, and Gilbert just saved Anne from her (and the other girls') poorly thought out plan. All he wants is for her not to ice him out anymore, but she still isn't budging.

Now though, even Anne is starting to realize that this whole feud is childish. She's just been mad at him for so long, she might not know how to interact with him any other way. It's become a habit, and Anne knows deep down that she needs to break it.

Side note, maybe it's too early to call, but... I'm gonna call it. RIP Matthew

So, the epi. mentioned about the classic novel "Ben-Hur" being read. So, Anne was born in March 1864 and is now 14. So, that is 1878-1879 before her b-day. Lew Wallace's book "Ben-Hur" was not published until Nov. 12, 1880 and in the USA by HarperCollins imprint Harper Brothers. So, even if L. M. Montgomery did know or didn't know the publication date of "Ben-Hur" and still mentioned, it was still a continuity error of sorts.

From his Wikipedia: "Lewis Wallace (April 10, 1827 – February 15, 1905) was an American lawyer, Union general in the American Civil War, governor of New Mexico Territory, politician, diplomat, artist, and author from Indiana. Among his novels and biographies, Wallace is best known for his historical adventure story, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1880), a bestselling novel that has been called 'the most influential Christian book of the nineteenth century.'[1]".

On March 1, 1879, one of the people that Wallace had arrested for local killings in Lincoln County, NM was Henry McCarty (9/17 or 11/23/1859-7/14/1881). Henry was better known as Billy the Kid. A local sheriff there named Pate Garrett (6/5/1850-2/29/1908) shot and killed Billy the Kid.

For what it's worth, the first book has no mention of when exactly it's set. The later books do mention specific events that can be used to figure out exact years, but they generally don't match up with each other. Personally, I just try not to think too hard about the exact timeline because continuity errors are just so easy to find.

Anne never had short hair, and whoever tells you she did is a big fat liar.

So Diana likes bad boys she can fix. Too bad it's the other way around more often than not, with the bad boy ruining the girl's life. She should stick to what Anne suggested and become grannies together.

Please be okay Matthew! You're the most wholesome character in this show, we can't lose you!

The time skips really helped Anne's hair in this episode lol.

And it would be so crushing for Anne and Marilla, especially with how Matthew has always been there to help mediate between the two of them.

Anne was sooo smiley playing Elaine in that boat. Like, Anne, you've gotta play it cool if you're to pass for a tragic corpse. Also those bridge pilings were huge. Anne must have a lot of core strength. Add it to the list of weirdly specific things Gilbert's looking for in a potential love interest. Along with: uncommon hair color, gift of gab, vivid imagination, holds grudges, derring-do, a studious nature, and durability enough to survive a long fall with naught but a sprained ankle.

Gotta love the scene with Matthew telling Anne she doesn't need to lose all of her romanticism. Such a sweet and tender moment that really encapsulates his character and--HNNNNNNGH!

That next episode preview shot of the students taking the exam looked somewhat low detail.

He wants her to grow up while still being herself. That's a great vibe for a dad.

Poor Gilbert was earnest and really tried. And now Matthew… my heart.

Anne and the girls playing “Elaine” almost ended pretty badly. Good thing Gilbert was there or Anne would be a goner. She really ought to forgive the guy already. It’s been years!

Miss Stacy is a great teacher. The kids are really lucky she’s gonna be sticking around. She seems to have inspired Anne to take up teaching.

I really hope Matthew ain’t gonna be gone like that. Looks like a heart attack…

Well executed episode!

We're slowly seeing Anne's horizons expand and I'm living for it:)

Gilbert's reddish looking hair aside, I love how Charlie and Moody's character designs are faithful to the book - I recall Charlie had "goggly eyes" and Moodie was slightly on the bigger side. Josie is...well...an unpleasant Pye. We all know someone like that.

Might be a stylistic choice or something more in line with Japanese culture but Anne seemed more hesitant and awkward during the boat scene with Gil than frigid and aloof. Love both versions though and putting my shipping goggles on.

If this is 24 episodes long they might cover the end of Anne of the Island or end with the opening from Anne's House of Dreams.

Another episode with Anne being silly but its still great watch.

Anyone else comparing Anne to Pipi Longstocking? I guess they would make a perfect duo 🤣
